- At just 23 years of age and without a Test century to his name, Brian Lara strode onto the SCG. By the time he'd left it, he was a legend after scoring 277 off 372 balls.

every shot is like a carefully choreographed dance move.
Lol
Brian lara have foot movement very quickly
Very right he is a dancing cricketer
Yes. No lies
Artist
LoL.Brian Lara had 244 career runs upto this test. And he scored 277 in 1 inning alone.
Karun Nair.
He would have had more haf Viv not kept him out of tbe team in favor of carlisle best, keith atherton etc
@@natalkumar6132 are you comparing with Brian lara
@@juanestadian8471 Well said.
I actually think this was the best Brian Lara ever batted , he might have gone on and broken the record there and then had it not been for that run out . Brian Lara’s first 3 test hundreds are as follows 277 , 167 and 375 that’s ridiculous
I've been watching cricket for around 40 years and this is this greatest innings i ever saw, btw I'm an Aussie!!
Was 11 when I watched this it gave me goose bumps then and still dose now also aussie 👍
The Truth Hurts Mate yes I’m with you because in Australia no one has done so far. I’m 51 and watching cricket since I was 12-13 years old but this inning was a unique one. No one has ever played and no one will get his first hundred that way in Aussie wickets.
When lara was just 18 years of age he hit 98 runs for Trinidad &Tobago vs Barbados against west indies great fast bowlers joel garner and malcolm Marshall
Do SCG Still have the Old pavallion where batting teams used to Sit as we can see in this Video too??
Have to agree. Remember this vividly and he never looked like going out. Been other great knocks in pressure situations but this is probably my favourite as well
"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" applied to batsmanship.
Europeon. Football League
Float. Just saying.
Take one lesson from Lara... A young guy, with a previous best score of 64, has made 277, but is he happy? Is he satisfied? No, he was disappointed.. Not a single smile on the face.. Because he missed his triple.. This hunger helped him make his 400 & 375 later on... This hunger converts an achiever into a legend...
This hunger converts a leg spinner into Steve Smith, a chubby kid into Virat Kohli, a poor guy into Barack Obama... BE HUNGRY... NEVER SETTLE... NO LIMITS... YOU AND THE SKY... GO, WORK, GET IT...
@Spartacus Singh Sorry for that... Thanks for correcting...
Thanks for describing beautifully the definition of a legend..
Well said..Adil...thnx man for describing the term "legend" ...becoz I was watching it for the legend Brian Lara...
He made 500 also in fc cricket
He smiled when got his 100?
The most astethically pleasing inngs I've ever watched. Pure poetry
Kallis and Dravid weren't far behind when it came to aesthetically pleasing batting though.
@@hereticsign Dravid.....certainly. Kallis was a robot.....consistent, yes and very much needed after cronje did the nonsense he did and the team was vulnerable, but pretty to watch, not really. Laxman was beautiful to watch however
juan estadian Oh cmon ! Every shot kallis played , the motion looked so smooth like he is not in hurry or something . But I agree with u about his role after cronje incident. The role was so vital , even now the SA team hasn’t been able to fill the void kallis left behind.
@@hereticsign kallis was robotic
Pillar of the team has to be robotic.
When he square cuts, it sounds like a shotgun going off! As an Englishman, I just adored the Windies team of the 70s and 80s, ans into the Lara era. It is my fond hope that they make a comeback.
Wow ! Lara's maiden hundred score was 277, that too in Australia.
And He was run out🙄 could have scored a Triple Hundred.
Whatta a player!
Yeh, the run was his call but he was sent back by a lazy and selfish partner. Even if it was a bad call his partner should have sacrificed himself. Lara could have made a triple century haing jus scored his maiden test .... who does that!!??
@@abbyallen7848 yeah feel bad for him , could have been only player to score three Triple hundreds
Of course Sehwag was closest He was out on 293 on verge of third Triple Hundred
@@abbyallen7848 karun nair
Absolute legend
I think that runout on 277 might be the inspiration and hunger that kept him alive to score 375 and 400 later. Karun Nair also scored 300 as his maiden 100 but later he never even got to a 50...
Brian lara is easily the most entertaining batsman of all time
brian lara he is a all time great player I am Indian but my childhood only for Lara Lara and great great Brian Lara legend Tru legend
Hmmmmmm... He was awesome but id take sir viv just
@@chadjanz5036 De Villiers matches Viv for entertainment, so does Ponting on his day. Agreed the bats are bigger and grounds are smaller and pitches flatter and gyms better. But there hasn't been a batsman as entertaining, dominating and consistent, all at the same time as Lara. Gilchrist in his peak years was probably very close, albeit not statistically.
Second only to Phil Tufnell.
@@chadjanz5036 Viv was great, but Brian Lara is the greatest period.
There was a left handed genius called Lara and there will be no other matching him in future truly amazing take a bow.
He plays 6th stump over pitched ball on backfoot through point region. Very few could do that. But Lara plays that shot at ease
Imagine how many people thought Lara would never have a better chance of 300.
There has never been a batsman like Lara. Pure genius.
.. and there never will be.
Absolutely
Correct. I prefer him the best talent ed Batsman ever in the last 40 years ...and iam an Indian
Brian Charles Lara became a household name in Australia after this knock. The world knew that a legend had arrived and within a few months from this knock he became extremely popular across the world with his name echoing everywhere.
What a great batsman he was!
I'm just loving the sound of bat. Every time be middles the ball... A sweet sound creates off the bat that just so soothing to the mind. I can watch him bat even with my eyes closed.
That will be the empty high stands mostly.
Lara was the most elegant and graceful batsman I had the privilege to watch. In a West Indies team that was terrible from the early 2000s, he did this so so often
That backlift, that driving. Absolutely brilliant player
Windies were terrible since 1997 actually
He is wizard ❤❤❤… Sachin had textbook shots Bt Lara had pretty much his own shots …I’m thankful to god I witnessed both Wizard nd Master
Agreed
Actually Sachin literally invented two shots of his own … that very fine paddle sweep and that late cut off the bouncer … Sachin had every shot in his book and he could toy around the same ball in at least 5 different directions - Mike Hussey says this
Lara had his unique style no doubt but he didn’t toy around and improvised … in fact he played true classical shots with extreme power and flawless timing.
The skill and class of Lara is that, even after having such a back lift, he never struggled against swing bowlers throughout his career... what a legend, hard to find such talent in todays cricket.
Absolutely ..when it comes to talent ..he is above everyone ...I mean everyone ... A artistic wizard Really 🎉
I remember watching this as a kid. West Indies were down in the series. After a big first innings by the host nation in the third test, Lara came to the crease with Windies down some early wickets and in big trouble. What happened over the next couple of days was probably the most beautiful batting performance I have ever seen. If not for the running blunder, I think he could've gone for 500+ runs by himself.
5:05 "Not only a fine batsman but also a very smart one" golden words
Because he raised his bat before umpire could give it bye or leg bye😂 smart one
We had said that I laughed so hard.
One of the greatest test innings you’ll ever see.
An absolute genius and one of the true greats of the game.
Australian fans are generous and acknowledge even when the opposition plays well. Something I've witnessed watching matches played in Australia on tv ☺
You are Sri lankan?
not only Australian, but all white people are generous, not only in cricket but in all walks of life they are generous. Thats why all of their enemies like us wish to migrate to their countries.

I can give my all rest time of life to see Brian Lara's batting.
One of the greatest knocks in the history of Test cricket by legendary Brian Lara!
At the age of 23
Every single Shot worth to watch
What a awesome player to watch
Pure class
Thanks Brian Lara
2:58 the way he picked that wrong'un 0_o
CallumBrady Yeah, that was incredible.
This type of artistry is truly amazing, Lara is a great player.
Sachin and Lara together would have been a dream .
The best right handed batsman and the best left handed batsman together raising mayhem .
Pleasure to have seen them play ❤️💙🙏
How I miss the days of quality test match battles that these two presented over their beautiful careers ❤️💙
One of the best innings ever!!!!
4:07 gave me goosebumps that 90° angle b/w bat face and surface of ground. Glorious.
Astounding shot
Greatest test innings I have witnessed. Completely flawless until the run out
The way LARA played spin bowling was PHENOMENAL... He had trained on Fast bowling attack like Walsh, Ambrose... But Facing Spin balls just like anything
Is it so..? I guess that's why he has an average of mere 35 on Indian soil...
@@patruzemann and thats why he averaged 80+ against Murali from 1993 to 2003 in tests??

Congratulations Mr Lara, you will always be my favorite bats man, your were superb evening until your retirement, I had never felt disappointed by your Character, you had been an inspiration to me throughout your cricketing career, I like your mannerisms , evening when you were giving out unfairly by an umpire you didn't retaliate, Yahshua Hamashiach blessings of good health and strength upon your life.
One of greatest batsman ever.
God adapted one great batsman on the earth and he was Great Brain charles Lara.
What a player. Fluency, poise and grace
Well I loved Lara's batting!!Such a talent!!Such a legend!!Never a dull moment when Lara used to bat!!For me the best test batsman I have seen in my lifetime till now!!
Brian Lara not only a legend but also inspiration .
I watched the full highlights. I didn't find any fault shot in an innings. It's look like all from the text book of CRICKET. An underestimated cricketer DUE to media.
277 on a huge ground. Such a treat to watch!
look at score of Australia 500+, enormous pressure on batsmen of windies, Lara scored 277 and it was run out. simply it's one of the all time greatest knock. even Sachin can't score that much huge in pressure situations. hatsoff
chup be gandu
@@harshitpatnaik6381 Sachin was flopdulkar as match winner and failed under pressure situation. Lara deliver under pressure situation and come in top 10 match winner of the world. Sachin does not even come in top50 match winner of the world
Totally agree! Sachin when compared, is over rated...
Agreed sachin faltered under pressure
Janardhana Reddy if you compare Sachin with Lara then you need to compare the teams strength also...bcoz the then windies one of the best team in the world.either in batting or bowling....and India that time one of the worst..Sachin himself carried the pressure of whole Indian team...also the prayers of whole Indian fans...if Sachin was out that days we did not watch that matches...sorry kid you need to grow up...
As they says his batting has an encrypted poetry
Everytime the ball hit the ball... It said Wow!
That backlift. Pure beauty. What a player.
The most complete innings in the history of test cricket.
The most beautiful batsman I've ever seen.
The sound comes from his bat is amazing.
The stance made by Lara to deliver every shot was charismatic and pleasing to be watched.
wow, you can see the affect of modern bats and outfield. Lara absolutely smashes some of those deliveries, middle of the bat, yet the ball kind of plods along to the fence. Players from that era should have a few runs added to their average or something when you compare to a modern player
tosgem I agree strongly
The pitch and outfield was very very slow. That's what makes the innings remarkable, that he could play those shots on such a pitch. A comparable pitch to the MCG pitch just gone.
@@SDCLFC1 also the grounds were much bigger
Yeah players tend to butcher the ball instead of strokes...
Cricket has become boring now. It's skewed too much in batsmens favor now with the bigger bats smaller grounds Fielding restrictions. I absolutely loved those matches when there was a fair contest between bat and ball in the 90s balls whizzing past the batsmens ears so close they could smell the leather. and then guys like Lara and Sachin and Steve Waugh ponting inzi Saeed Anwar Ganguly and kallis fighting it out against hostile fast bowling. That is gone now.
On the evidence of this innings at the age of 23 against Australia down under, I dont think it would be unfair to rate Lara ahead of Sachin in Tests but only ahead slightly. Sachin did score a century at Perth while he was younger than 20 but longevity, sheer runs and avg aside, if I remember correctly, Sachin hasn't played many crucial 4th innings under pressure and carried over the team to victory even with the help of his team mates. Winning games for your country under pressure has to count more than anything and Lara is a genius at that. He has won many crucial matches under pressure with or without his teammates. But in ODIs Sachin was lightyears ahead of anyone.
They were both great players. I was lucky enough to be at Old Trafford in 1990 to see Sachin's first test century in England.
Well said👍
Well talking about 4th innings then obviously you haven’t watched many matches of Sachin and yes winning matches for you country matters more and in that regard Sachin’s winning rate is better than Lara …
Lara’s winning record as well was very low except for a 3-4 innings … just because of a bad team … watching a great inning and then getting carried away emotionally is understandable but it doesn’t undermine the facts backed by stats …. This is no way stating that Lara wasn’t a GOAT … he was
He was easily the best batsman of his generation and perhaps the best cricketer since the immortal Sir Garfiled Sobers!!!
In full flow, Lara was a sight to behold !!
I don't know if he was even the second best batsman of his generation. I will put pointing alongside Lara for the number 2 spot of his generation.
H Agarwal Good luck getting anyone other than an Indian fan to agree with you.
And most of them would rank Shah Rukh Khan above Lara, too.
Lol wisden ranked him below sachin didn't it? Lara struggled against Australia and India. And struggled in SA till 90's
@@firstal3799 Lara struggled against Australia? You should tell Ponting, Warne, McGrath, Gillespie, Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, Hayden, Langer, McGill and Healy. Oh and Damien Fleming too.
All of them rated Lara the best batsman of their era.
No need to believe me, read their autobiographies.
Why is youtube showing videos of Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kallis and Co. in my feed. Re-watching these greats play is such a treat to my eyes. Reliving my younger days when cricket was so competitive. Cricket of today's era will never stand up to that charm of old.
2:27 look at that WI playing XI... legendary.
Would just replace arthurton with Chanderpaul and Simmons with Gayle
Genius he is, born to bat. So flexible in the crease, not stiff as most batsman.
Greatest betsman, I have ever seen...
What a wonderful to watch again n again..
Legendary lefthander...👌
Brian Lara, I would say was the most stylish and the most elegant batsman ever to play the game of cricket. Just wonderful to watch.
The beginning of the legend that is Lara
The pull shot at 3:10 sounds so sweet.
Imagine listening to that in the stadium...!
It seems like the bats were louder back in the day , but also the gary nicholsan bat is so swag with cricket , it made left handers look more stylish
No bowler could get him out.. true legend.. he would have scored tetraton way back if he wouldn't have got run out.. really treat for eyes to watch this man playing. What a player !!
I am wordless. Such a greatest player. Miss you from core of my heart 😓
He was the most stylish player lin the world and a gem to watch... Nobody can match him
What an incredible innings this was from the great left hander... Simply superb in all respects of the batting. The world record was certainly on the cards and playing that kind of gutsy innings in Australian ground with that pace was magnificent effort. He announced to the world he can play those big innings and as rightly said by the 'voice of MCG' none other than Bill Lawry it was tragic end to this epic innings, Hooper shuld have sacrificed his wicket.. Never the less it is always fun watching the highlights any time.
This guy forcibly caresses boundaries so swiftly, so much power in his cutting.
prime example of a player who can win match single handedly
In Caribbean grounds yes
One the greatest batsman the game of cricket has produce
I actually think this is one of Lara’s best innings. Maybe even top 3.
Given the circumstances I think this was his best. Series were already decided when he scored 375 and 400*. In this one his team was down 0-1 in the series and looked like they were going to get smashed in the third test when he came to the crease.
Lara batting style is so good.when he play each shoot look like he creat a beauty of cricket ❤️❤️❤️
Lara doesn't bat, he dances at the crease.
The most stylish batting, it's a pleasure to watch him.
I remember watching this live as a kid and just being amazed at how perfectly he was finding the gaps and hitting so many 4s.
And he did it with a bat that would pretty much be the opposite of what players and fans drool over now. One of the Cricketing GOATS!
If he had today's bat every bowler career was gonna destroyed
Brilliant driving on front n backfoot..... legend❤
I've been following cricket for 50 years and that was the best innings I've ever seen, never looked like getting out the whole time.
What a stroke play so pleasing to eyes a true legend
The sound of that bat after every shot. That echo!
What a stylish elegance shorts to watching.....

Only one word for this inning
Masterpiece
World class batsman, just love his presence on the wicket!!!! .. I expected so much from Darren bravo . ... But let's hope he gets us to see the carribean flavour!!
I can watch Lara bat all day long. 23 years old and looks as solid as a rock, and with all his characteristic flair! My absolute favourite batsman of all those I've seen. And one of the few who could play Warne!
Not a single shot in the air ! Amazing
5:07 Even the Australian kids are really appreciative 👏
Brian Lara the one-man-army
Yes
One thing I noticed from watching Brian Lara is his unusual top hand grip of the bat with the bat handle being obscured. Apart from Brian Lara, Graeme Pollock from South Africa was the other batter who I saw used the same grip. Both Lara and Tendulkar dominated the era from early 90s to mild-late 2000s and were the truly "Greats" of modern day cricket.
I cherished this era that produced some great young batsmen. Lara, Tendulkar, Mark Waugh and then Ponting. Good times.
There was a 300 plus there to be taken, judging by how well he was playing....he was in control. Aussies looked demoralized.
The special thing about this innings is how everything was along the ground. Runout was the only way he was going to get out.
B.C LARA personally ranked this innings higher than 400,375 and 501.. he loved the innings so much
The best batting Innings I ever saw live. Absolutely brilliant 👏
no one can see that this guy was 5 tests old with previous best of 64
It was no surprise he had scored 400.. it was like something he was always chasing when he batted.i mean he make 200 runs look like 50 with the rate he scores at and his timing and placement is another story by itself
My cousin brother told me that he watched this innings live and the baddest ball which Lara played was that one hand on drive after his 50. Was unfortunate to be a lone warrior in the team those days, undoubtedly the greatest and most stylish player that have ever played the game beside Sir Don Bradman.
Reminiscent of Sir Gary's 254 against Australia. Beautiful!
A TRUE LEGEND.
The most mind boggling thing is that in his first class debut in West Indies he scored 98 runs against Barbosa against the likes of Michael holding and joel garner just amazing stuff 🥵🥵🥵
not Holding ,Malcolm Marshall
The feather bat and that backlift. One of the all time greatest.
That suave smooth motion when he is at the crease, it's like a mastero playing a sonata.
