Andy Roberts - the first West Indian of the modern era to bowl at 100 mph. Gooch recalled that Roberts was the fastest bowler he faced at the beginning of his career in 1974,but that he soon slowed down down after two years on the English County treadmill. By the time Roberts had toured Australia in late 1975,he had lost at least a yard of pace but still clocked 99.1 mph at Perth.
His stats were amazing, he got about two thirds of his Test wickets on away tours and unlike most fast bowlers he had a better away average than he did at home. And he actually got wickets in India and Pakistan which many other fast bowlers could not do.
Was a dynamic quick for a few years at test level until he slowed down in the late 70s. Then he used his wiles to outsmart the best..Leader of the pack and succeeded by Marshall.
Great, but it missed out Roberts's outstanding average in English county cricket when he played for Hampshire. His 244 first-class wickets in just 58 games came at a career average of 16.70, the lowest by any regular bowler in the county's history. A truly great fast bowler!
When you're as quick as Roberts was in 1974,the batsmen tend to adopt a policy of trying not to hang around too long, which is reflected in the bowler's average. In 74,Roberts was probably quicker than Jeff Thomson until the treadmill of county cricket slowed him down after just two years.
JUST IMAGIN HOW OUR GREAT LITTLE MASTER FACED SUCH MIGHTY BOWLERS WITHOUT HELMET & MADE TONS OF RUNS WHEN THERE WERE NO RESTRICTIONS ON NO OF BOUNCERS TO BE BOWLED. HENCE THE SUNNY GAVASKAR WILL REMAIN ALL TIME GREAT IN PAST , PRENENT & FUTURE OF WORLD CRICKET. 9:15
@@sanjeevmundle3392 he had a skull cap instead. It’s written in black and white that it’s one of the two myths we Indians frequently harp about, in cricket literature. There are enough pictures online which show the skull cap underneath the floppy hat that he wore. He preferred that to helmet as he had weak neck muscles and the helmets of those days were quite heavy. Secondly the bulk of his runs against them came in his debut series of 1971 when the West Indies had NO fast bowlers in its team and in 1978 when they toured with a B team as all of its regular players including the captain Clive Lloyd and his fast bowlers were away playing in the WSC (this was Malcolm Marshall’s debut series, as a barely 20 year old). The only time Gavaskar actually made runs against the frontline four pronged pace attack of the West Indies was at home in the 1983-84 series, in which he had a few high scores as well as some failures including one of his first ball ducks.
@sidb0206 HE USED SKULL CAP IN LATER PART . IN SPITE OF THAT SUNNY WAS CERTAINLY ALL TIME GREAT OPENNIG BATSEMAN, AT LEAST IN LONGER VERSION OF THE GAME.
@ sanjeevmundle3392 he used skull caps in the later part because they were not available before and his contemporaries at the time too had no head gear. He certainly was one of our greats. But saying he faced fast bowlers without any protection unlike his peers certainly isn’t true.
Btw, Gavaskar's supposed insane record against the fearsome foursome is a complete myth. I think he scored just one century in India against them. All of the other centuries were against the likes of Julien, Holder, etc
@@OompaLoompaPoopa he scored 2 in India in 1983-84 and another one in 1982-83. These were the only 3 against the full pace quartet of the West Indies of then. The remaining as you rightly said came when they had no pace bowlers as in 1971 when he made his debut and scored over 700 with an average of 200, when they had one genuine fast bowler Roberts/Holding in their team like in 1974-75 in India or 1975-76 in the West Indies and when they came with their B team in 1978 when all the main players had defected to the Kerry Packer World Series and the one that came here had a 20 year old Malcolm Marshall playing making his debut and Sylvester Clark who despite being fearsome never managed a regular place in their national team. In fact Clive Lloyd decided to do away with spinners in their team after we chased the then world record of 416 in the 4th innings to win a match in the 75-76 series.

I was in the oval back in the day...watching from the...school boy stand...when he nasty up that dude... because of kerry packer....most teams cut their front line players...who were part of the kerry packer series..WI were the only team which did not... Australia came with second line unit...and there was no mercy...
Rattling our batsmen with pace in that era was not that great achievement although Roberts was a great bowler. Given that out batsmen were bred on and fed with staple spin diet at home, any quick bowler would have been full of glee at having a go at them.
Yes, that is also my opinion. I saw them both in the West Indies - Australia 75-76 series. Although I wasn't a Test batsmen back then and never faced them, I'd put them at best and second best in the world and there wasn't too much in it. Roberts on average just a little quicker, but you had a sense that Lillee's best balls were more likely to take great batsmens' wickets that any other bowler back couldn't have taken (wind back the clock a few years and John Snow had that ability). Alltime Schoolboy first eleven attack? Marshall, Lillee, Akram! Alltime Schoolboy second eleven attack, first choice: Roberts!!
Superior?!! Superior in what ? Roberts was not only faster than Lillee, but also took his first 100 wickets in only his 19th Test Match. This was a record at the time. He was the most astute thinker of the art of high-speed bowling so that no batsmen could underestimate him because said batsman didn't know what trick he had up his sleeve next. With that point in mind, more batsmen were struck by Roberts than by any other fast bowler of his era. On flat pitches also,Roberts had a better average, per wicket taken ,than Lillee. In England,1975, Lillee took 21 wickets at 21.9. The following year,Roberts took 28 wickets at 19.17.
@@davifdavid4347 I'm including WSC so in that period Lillee played 35 matches took 187 wickets @24.52.Roberts played 39 matches took 184 wickets @25.57.Australia during WSC had a weak batting side with only Greg Chappell at his peak.Lillee had to contend with Viv Richards batting like Bradman in 1977/78 season when scored 862 runs at 86.20 and Barry Richards wasn't bad either.Roberts had a poor series against Pakistan in 1976/77.Roberts was faster but Lillee had more guile. You must admit West Indies batting was superior to Australia during WSC.
Sunny had accepted in his book 'My Ideals ' that amongall bowlers whom he faced,Roberts was best.He added ," The main thing is his bouncers' speed went on changing .when the ball was new his swingers were like fall of thunderbolt. Only one thing he was lacking ,that he didn't have yorkers of Thimson, Holding n Garner's level. If he had this weapon, his bowling sharpness would have increased more.
