KSI is a pressure measurement PSI (pounds per square inch) KSI( Killapounds aka 1,000 pounds per square inch) they are material properties just like the rockwell hardness scale, ksi is used for calculating deformation, deflection, column buckling, elongation etc normally this variable is noted as G and converted into PSI when calculating. Titanium is great for everything you are saying but doesn't make a good metal for blades, this is where what Tim was talking about with rockwell hardness, steel hardens better and will have better edge retention when you start looking into the martensites and crystalline structure of the steel itself. There is a lot there to go into.... Keep up the great podcasts!

I do the same for my arrows, I have victory rip tko in sports and elites, I spine them cut off the wonkiest end, and I'll spin test the points/broadheads with insert and turn them till they spin the straightest, recently got the rip as the tko in my area Australia have gone up $85 a doz, and they come with a much better insert got them in the sports as well, spin test and no issues shooting out to 110m

I totally nerd out on building my arrows, not because I think it will make a massive difference in MY accuracy, but because I’m an engineer…nuff said…
I’ve been doing a similar process as you described for years, also matching components with arrows to reduce my deviation in weight arrow to arrow. However, even with up to about a 5 grain weight difference, I don’t see any difference in accuracy until distances beyond 80 yards, and even then, not a huge difference.
Thank you for encouraging your audience to nerd out, build their own, and self-maintain their equipment! Better archery through better knowledge of the ENTIRE system.

  •  18 дней назад

I use the Iron Will single bevel 135 grain Snyder core (no insert), 15 grain Titanium collar, Black Eagle 300 spine X-Impact, 4 SK 2.0 vanes, and a Halo nock at 430 grains. Elk killer! This year I will shoot my Lift 33 at 30 inch draw and 66 pounds (maxed out 65# mods). Launches at 286 fps. Perfect combo for me.
BTW, went with 4 SK 2.0 for the extreme light weight (4 lighter than 3 vanes of almost anything out there) to ensure the lower profile tunes with broadheads, and they do to 80 yards with ease. Never thought I would shoot a 4-vane arrow, but keep an open mind…

    Podcast Topic Request:
I'm not a Lift owner, but I've been seeing PILES of people complain about split limbs. I don't know if they're just incorrectly shimming/tuning their bow, if it's a manuf. QC issue, or if it's a loud minority (statistically insignificant % of units), but I see it often, as well as a crapload of Lifts being put up for resale.
Curious about what you've seen in the shop, and/or what you've heard from others.

I learned how to make an arrow fly correct from my recurve. Draw weight, 3-4 Feathers, vanes, point weight, arrow length, spine & so on. The 35 years of instinctive recurve shooting at deer from 5 yards to groundhogs at 80 yards to rabbits at all yardages it taught me by feel what makes an arrow fly correctly. I got lucky once and killed a groundhog at 83 yards with a recurve and a 4 fletch 2219 with 200 grain Rothaar Snuffer. Wonder what that hold over was? 15’ft? But that 4 fletch 2219 with that set up flew perfectly. Problem is you could smoke a cigarette before it reached that groundhog at 83yds.

Tim, you made a comment about not hearing people shoot light arrows with fixed blade I think. I’ll see if I can test that this year. I’ve built my arrows to 409gr with 17% FOC (Black Eagle X-Impact, 26” C to C, 165gr up front) and will have both SEVR 2.0 and Iron Will SB w/bleeders in my quiver. Hoping to have similar flight. Long shot will use Iron Will, sub 50 will get SEVR.

do you worry about the 3 vanes and 3 blades on a broadhead being on the same plane? Also just wanted to give you guys a shout out. I learn something new almost every video or podcast. I have only had the opportunity to stop into Spokane Valley Archery just once. Being a left-handed shooter, I was so impressed with your inventory especially left-hand equipment. Wassup guys. Awesome conversation today. I've been shooting Stinger Buzzcut broadheads the last couple of years, but was thinking of switching to a single bevel this year. I'm torn between the Iron Will 125's or the VPA Omega's. I'm curious what your choice would be. I'm mainly a whitetail hunter from a tree stand, so I have shorter shots. I'm pulling 60lbs at a 29in draw with 27in Victory RIP arrows. Keep up with the awesome shows. They're always a must watch. Because I'm bound to learn a thing or 3.

Hi, I the founder of Nomad Broadheads. RockWell hardness is for heat treatment such as steel hardening (oven Cooking). The reason why so many broadheads try to not exceed 61 Rockwell, much like titanium, it may be strong, but brittle, show can chip and break on impact. A slightly softer Rockwell rate can absorb more impact and keep its edge retention. Any steel that is not heat treated would be raw and too soft, It would just fold on impact and the edge retention would not be optimal. Aluminum is soft is a soft and light metal. There is an incredible amount to consider to broadhead design and fit for purpose use. High carbon will also give the steel a better edge retention and strength over stainless steel, but sacrifice possible rusting. Your always juggling and balancing the pros and cons. There is also Steel toughness in play.
Your Rockwell Rating increased in sub zero temperatures, so you have to allow for colder climates.
You can 3D print in steel, anything 3D printed would be too brittle and explode on impact. you may be able to have a a thread screw into a larger head, but your going to have a brittle joint. But you can only do so much in the weight category of 100g, 125g, 150 etc.
In the last 4 yearsI have been designing one of the most accurate broadheads for long range. My background is in engineering design and i have been an active shooter for a decade. The broadheads unique design gives it a gyroscopic like flight stability.
Feel free to check out nomadbroadheads.com.
Happy to send you a sample to see what you think.

My only issue with Josh Bowmar is he said on the HUNTR podcast that you can’t tune a fixed BH well enough to shoot it accurately at long distances like you can with mechanicals IE sevr, swhackers, and their beast BH. It’s just not true, even my average shooting ass can get my TOTA XLs to group with my FIeld points at 60 yds (all I practice to since I’m in the northeast, and my avg shot on whitetail is less than 25 yds).
