Lyrics:
I'm a dead man walking here
That's the least of all my fears
Ooh, underneath the water
It's not Alabama clay
Gives my trembling hands away
Ooh, please forgive me, father
Ain't going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me 'ever I go
Won't do me no good, washing in the river
Can't no preacher man save my soul
To this day I have yet to hear another pair of human beings sing so PERFECTLY together. It's tragic on so many levels that this duo isn't together anymore......
I took this break up majorly to heart !!
They were amazing but I think Dallas and Pink are the ultimate duo.
Try Caleb and Kelsey.

I am leaving this comment here so that whenever someone likes this, I can come here to listen to this masterpiece song))✨✨✨
Do you know how Hard it was to find this song from four years ago that I didn't remember the lyrics of, nor the name of the band, nor the song name, or year?!
My desperate nostalgic-driven panic to find this song with only the fact that they were a duo from the 2010s with a country-ish folk aesthetic in a black and white slight-apocalyptic vibe of a music video and vocals that induce shivers has left me with such a pitiful search history; and I'm about to cry. Because in the end, all I literally had to search was duo singers 2010s.
The search took me 2 hours and a journey through songs I had forgotten about but am still crazy about like Jar of Hearts. In my sleep deprived procrastination I have yet to decide if my struggle was worth it.
Roxy believe me it's worth it
Roxy this is the creepiest thing because I had the same exact thing happen to me and I just now found it on accident. I was searching the hunger games sound track and I was listening to Taylor Swift and they were in the song and then I got excited because I remembered the band name after seeing it woooow
This is really creepy the more I read cus I had the same experience I kept searching country bands from 2010-2015 and I couldn’t find nothing
Npr? Lol.
🤣🤣 i kept searching 'the white stripes' and damn near convinced myself that I imagined this song before searching 'girl with red balloon' and I felt like an absolute moron when The Civil Wars popped up 🤣🤣
SERIOUSLY? THIS song only has THAT many views? That is just SAD! I mean really, this song deserves WWWAAAAAAY more recognition, the harmonies and the melody are just BAD-ASS!
True!
There are many other postings of it with lots of views!
Yeah the song came out in 2011, but this was posted less than a year ago. They must have only recently acquired a vevo channel to upload it to.
their actual channel has more views
6 years later, even 4.1 million is a low video count!
When I was younger (maybe 4-5), I lived in Illinois. My parents were long time fans of the civil wars, and the music would play in the car often. One particular thing I remember was my father singing Barton Hollow to my brother and I, as he played the guitar.
About a year ago, my parents gave me what seemed to be a very cracked Iphone 3 or 4. It used to be my dad's so it had a lot of music on it.
I remember listening to all of their songs (save for the Barton Hollow album, the one that still gives me a heavy dose of nostalgia) till I was sick of them, even listening to them as I fell asleep. Now, as a very imaginative kid, I'd come up with PMVs and MAPs in my mind for almost every song, seeing the characters move, interact, and fight in my mind.
But, one night, as we were driving home from some sort of event (I believe it was after my brother and I had gone to see The Wizard of Oz) The Violet Hour came on. Since then, I've gotten a pretty nice android phone, and it has almost all of the Civil Wars's music on it. I cannot express how much every song means to me, especially 20 years. Each one reminds me of a place I've never been, a golden farm on a quiet summer night. a breeze calmly comes to me, and I close my eyes. The feeling of these songs is truly spectacular, and I don't really know who i'd be without the Infulence of the Civil Wars. So, to Joy and John Paul, thank you.
Thank you for everything.
It's a shame they don't still make music together. They meshed so well. It's not common at all for two people to be able to harmonize so seamlessly like that.
so much of a Bonnie and Clyde feel it's insane!!!
YES!!!!
Such a fantastic song, and these two had an undeniable chemistry. Too bad they had to go their separate ways.
@@custerranch 😂😂😂
Who's here in 2022.... Still a great song!
I love how they move together when they sing. Like they're one with each other.
Every aspect of this song AND the way they fit together is excellent. Seriously, vocals, instrumentation, even tempo. Everything .
Dec 2021 and I'm hearing this for the first time....BLOWN AWAY!
I'm a dead man walking here
But that's the least of all my fears

Ain't going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me e'er I go
Won't do me no good washing in the river
Can't no preacher man save my soul
Did that full moon force my hand?
Or that un marked hundred grand?
Ooh, underneath the water
Please forgive me father
Miles and miles in my bare feet
Still can't lay me down to sleep
If I die before I wake
I know the Lord my soul won't take
I'm a dead man walking
I'm a dead man walking
Keep walking and running and running for miles
Keep walking and running and running for miles
Keep walking and running and running for miles

Stephanie K Haha yeah, juxtaposition is fun. :)

This song is sheer genius, with such extraordinary music and lyrics. Thanks for this masterpiece
Just discovered Civil Wars recently, such an awesome duo!
Wish they were still together to make beautiful music!

Total bad assery. One of my favorite songs EVER.
They really know how to convey such a spooky sounding song with such beautiful vocal and instrumental harmonies. This song is a masterpiece!
Such an amazing band. In their short time in the spotlight they put out an amazing collection of real authentic Southern inspired songs dripping with real emotion. I miss them and wish they could make more amazing music. They were definitely a rare bright spot in popular music.
True harmony and full commitment to the music; holding nothing back. This is a great expressionistic dance song; the drama is irresistibly compelling.
The Edge Of Never
iknowright! :)
that's what brought me here too!😍
Me too ! :)
sammmmmme
They're the reason why I'm here
I love the book
Andrew e Camryn, música maravilhosa, livro maravilhoso ❤
Verdade! Camryn e Andrew❤

Siiiiim meu deus
Muitoooooo!
Gracas a deus não é só eu que conheci essa música pelo livro kkk Camryn e Andrew S2
Whatever personal issues they had are not our business but from a musical standard it's a tragic loss they had to part ways. The most undeniable chemistry I have maybe ever witnessed in a performing duo, just electric. Their collaboration produced tunes that reached deep into your soul and inflamed emotions you didn't know were there. Thankfully the music lives on forever
100% agreed!
why isn't this a 100 million views atleast i mean this isn't commercial shit this is actual REAL good music i don't understand
reading the edge of never for the 3rd time and each time I reach the part where Camryn is listening to the song, I come here to hear it again
They both have phenomenal voices, but im here for 1:58-2:20. There's just something about her voice.
How the hell did only 41k out of 4.6 million views like this song?
camryn and andrew ♡ love this song...their music taste is really good hehahe #bookworm #booklove
Andrew e Camryn me marcaram demais com essa música, fico imaginando eles cantando, esse livro precisa urgentemente virar filme!
Pensei a mesma coisa!!!!
Sou apaixonada por esse livro

This song still gives me goosebumps after all these years
Soulmates come in all forms. Sometimes we're blessed enough to have experienced them. Beautiful, perfection.
I miss them they need to get back together for more amazing music
What I love about this song, just singing and guitar. No band, no auto tune, just that. Beautiful song!
I'm late. I just discovered this wonderful pair. Love!
Same here. Can’t believe I just found out this song yesterday
This is grossly underrated for a excellent song from the last fifteen years
Can't no preacher man save my soul. That's god damn right.
ahepperl why the vulgarity?
Very underrated song.
The edge of never brought me here! Love the song
I'll forever love this group. ❤️ They show so much passion with their music.
The Edge of Never brought me here too:)I love this song
Hey me too! I am currently reading it,and i'm on the part where Andrew brought Camryn to meet his Mom. And I am kind of dreading what's gonna happen next.
I think it’s the absolute chemistry and passion they have towards one another as well that makes them so amazing!
It’s easy to overlook the foundation, the roots, of a song when it’s highly produced. On “Barton Hollow,” producer Charlie Peacock wisely toned down any instrumentation that didn’t add rhythmic drive to the two voices. He recorded the vocals in such a manner that the words were easy to understand, though maybe not always to comprehend, which usually led to happily listening to them again. Even the “ooo ooos” in the song made sense as part of the lyric, when sung with the urgency and moving notes as effective as any Beatles or Carter Family harmonies.
White begins the song (after the “ooo ooos”) by singing about some unexplained act that may threaten his salvation:
I’m a dead man walking here
But that’s the least of all my fears
Ooh, underneath the water
It’s not Alabama clay
That gives my trembling hands away
Please forgive me father
Ain’t going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me e’er I go
Won’t do me no good washing in the river
Can’t no preacher man save my soul
Williams later takes the lead:
Miles and miles in my bare feet
Still can’t lay me down to sleep
If I die before I wake
I know the Lord my soul won’t take
Exactly what were these people singing about anyway? Whatever it was, they sang with a desperation that totally supported the lyric, and they wisely left everything else up to the listener’s imagination.
“Barton Hollow” was a song about the fear of the consequences of sin that shared a great spiritual lyrical sensibility with Danny Orton’s masterful “Angel Boy,” from Tim McGraw’s Set This Circus Down album. The song also showed that Hollywood may have had its head on straighter than Nashville in terms of what country music was about, as the single won the Best Country Duo/Group Performance Award at the 54th Grammy Awards in 2012, despite the fact that the song wasn’t even sent to country radio.
The duo, unfortunately for us, broke up just as their star was rising, but they gave hope to a generation of singer-songwriters who felt like they were wasting their time playing for free at open mics. All that’s ancient history now. But “Barton Hollow” still gives goosebumps the way it did years ago, and the lyrics are still just as cool to dissect and ponder.
BUT THOSE HARMONIES THO
Andrew e Camryn me fez ouvir essa música 3
He is from where I live. Lawrenceburg, TN. Our town is very proud of him.
Not many songs can give me goosebumps when i listen to them but this song has so much passion and beauty to it it gives me the chills
This was her favorite band, it's kind of hard listening to them and not run through the memories of laughing and singing on the road trips we always took. ❤️uPeach
I still have no absolutely no idea what they’re singing about but they certainly make me crave the confusion. I never get tired of this performance. They’re positively electric!
After hearing this my hope for mankind was renewed.
why am I just hearing this masterpiece? their voices are amazing. 😍
Yep its 2022. Still listening. Destroyed that they didn't go further
A wonderful duo! I wish you two were still making music together.
The voice brought me here and i´m not ashamed of it.
Absolutely angelic harmony!
I absolutely love this😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍so beautiful
Camryn e Andrew 😊😊😊
I saw the Civil Wars open for Adele in 2011. Loved this song ever since then!
I hope the Genre of Dark Country continues. This is the first Country act I have like and felt was authentic, since the Late and Profoundly Great Johnny Cash. It is a shame that they broke up the music act but hopefully the Genre will stick around. Country is awful these days and this was the one bright spot. Hell, Give them time and I bet they go back on tour...just no new material.
Lucas Smith try "7horse" radio on Pandora
Lucas Smith hank 3 got me started on the different country and southern generes. good stuff
No new material? I'd bet both of them have songs written either to each other or about the whole situation, that they won't record or release. Maybe even very good songs, that require a male/female duet. Never hear them. ugh.
Check out Colter Wall
Brad Geltapfel Joy actually recorded a song called What A Good Woman Does and we all low-key think it's exactly about their story after the break up. Give it a listen if you haven't already ,(;
I reckon without a doubt one of the best if not the best duo in music. Their harms are awesome. Always politics that tears us apart tho. miss this duo
I cant get enough of their music
Saw on the Voice! had to hear the original....love it!
+Rachel Shaddix ...Same thing here
Me 2 !! High 5!!!
Alaska & Madi from The Voice 6 brought me here! Love their version and the original version though! :)
The edge of never
The edge of never 2020. This song definitely goes with the book & characters. Love it.
Turned on to this song by the book Edge of Never. For you Cam & Andrew fans, check out Edge of Always, book 2.
All of their music gives me goosebumps
honestly how do they not have more views? this song is amazing. just goes to show people don't know good music when they hear it nowadays. smh
Did you notice there are many other postings of this song?
I still come back for this song
Listening in may 2021 ❤️❤️❤️
my favorite duo/band right here.....
Nadie como Tú. (Camryn Bennet & Andrew Parrish)
Oh my god!! Where have these guys been all my life?!
They broke up last year :-(
Camryn and Andrew, Colton and Nell
My favorite song
Every song they sung was "strong" heart and soul strong
I adore them. Wish they could have stayed together... musically.
The Edge Of Never brought me hereee
Miss this group!
I know where that is. I swim at Mount Zion all the time, but the bridge is scary to walk across, and the church is old. Mount Zion is in southern Tennessee BTW
Yes, but Barton Hollow is in Cherokee, AL just past the Shoals. And John Paul lives in Florence. 😉. My cousin had his kids in daycare.
Damn shame they are no more.
One word.
Haunting.
differences they cannot get over on top of the fact they aren't communicating with each other at all. It sucks. They are a great duo and I love their music, I do hope they can get over everything and make amends.
This is too damn good to give up on.
I'm from Lima - Peru and i grew up listening to Salsa music. Yet i love this song not only because i understand it but because i haven't heard something like that before. Is unique.
Camryn ♡ Andrew
Oh my God I love it.

For some reason this song makes me feel like a badass.
the band is bad ass / music is , in my opinion , a little bit of Blue Grass , Southern Rock ,TRUE MUSIC FROM THE HEARTI ENJOYED IT
