I agree! Nothing like growing and eating your own produce. We have a friend who was born and raised in Chicago. A couple years ago I gave her one of my tomatoes. She was amazed at the flavor and texture. Now she anxiously awaits my harvests and devours my tomatoes. My husband says I have created a tomato monster! Ha! Ha! They compete for tomatoes and I have had to add a couple more plants to feed them! Makes my heart glad to know I can supply them with fresh tomatoes

Are you kidding me.... Wowwww. 😍 harvest-queen!!!!
Impressive haul. The food bank will rejoice. Such beautiful long beans too. I don't plant a garden because I am one person family. I can't use all the vegs or herbs. I need to find a seed bank where I can buy just a few seeds in varieties that I want.
Another beautiful visit with Garden Answer.😍

Does she do any and if not you should get her a small space to grow something. It would adorable to know how she felt watching something she planted can grow into food. Sorry for blubbering on i just got so emotional reading your daughters response.

57 degrees! How wonderful, we've not seem anything under 75 yet (even at night). I like to grow a few new things every year also.Great harvest! We plant big crops of veggies to have extra for winter, we store, can and dehydrate, as well as share. Some years We've planted as many as 200 tomato plants, and we normally plant 100 pounds of seed potatoes every year. We like San Marzano tomatoes for thick sauces/juices.A root cellar, congrats!

I heard Monty Don say one reason carrots grow malformed is when there has been manure added that was too fresh - in other words it wasn't fully composted. He says you'll get Rude Carrots that way every time!
But Laura I'm betting your guess of soil compaction is the culprit in this case. It seems like if it were a compost issue the "rudeness" would be more widespread !
    WIDESPREAD RUDENESS -
    OH NOOOOO!!!
    Sorry, I've composed myself now..
    I have a Nematoad question:
I know there are 2 kinds of Nematodes:
    Beneficial Nematoads,
    and
    NOT Beneficial Nematoads.
You mentioned this could be a reason for malformed carrots.
So I am wondering if BOTH of the kinds of Nematoads will do this to carrots, or just one kind?
I ask bcuz I use beneficial nematodes in my soil to help keep away lots of pests like, fleas, chiggers, weevils, and caterpillars (to name just a few) that are soil born.
They take care of a multitude of pests!
However, I have no idea of they eat our beloved carrots, and other underground veggies!
    Any ideas on this?

Roto-tilling can cause compaction even though the initial result is fluffy soil.
