I love these ‘catch-all’ videos, where Laura is just showing a regular day around the garden. One suggestion about tomato cuttings: I had a really great success rooting the suckers in water. Pretty much 100% success and planted them once they had strong and extensive roots. That’s how I overwinter the best producing plants on my window sill.

The really great thing about growing more Tomatoes now is, the simple fact you will have suckers on those Tomatoes and so on, time it right and you can start next season with plants rather than seeds. It is in my experience the best way if your climate can support it, sucker plants grow so much stronger and quicker and fruit sooner and lower down on the main stem. IT really is the best way if your climate can support them...Steve...🙂

Hi Laura and Aaron! Love your videos. We built our 6a garden from scratch in 2020. Our area in southern British Columbia is semi arid and we have similar high temps and minimal rainfall. We've done all the irrigation ourselves and I'm learning many tricks from you. My question is, when running 1/4" drip, what fitting do you use at the dead end? Is that the same fitting that you use in a pot? Or do you run those in a complete circle? Keep up the great work, you inspire so many of us to try things we know nothing about!

Seeing the mundane things has been so helpful - including with changing out the drip lines. For a year, I struggled with ineffectively pushing the barbs onto the lines by sheer force which bent the drip line until I noticed Laura working them back-and-forth as she did in this video. What a difference that makes! Thanks for the little things 🙂

I struggled at first too with inserting the fittings (who thought irrigation was a good project for March?? 🤦🏼‍♀️😏🤷🏼‍♀️) - if it’s too cold for them to be pliable I also found taking a coffee thermos out with hot water and dipping the tubing ends in before trying to work with them to be helpful.

The gardens at Monticello are amazing. If you've never been, there's one for your bucket list. Jefferson spent a lot of time in France and was an avid gardener, so am not surprised to see the "French" carrot seeds. He and his neighbor in the next county over (where I live), James Madison, used to compare gardening and farm notes. James and Dolley Madison had a French gardener couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bizet, who took care of their gardens.

A little off topic, but I was noticing as you were in the raised bed garden that several arbs are looking a bit toasted. Is that normal/expected given the heat, etc. you've had this year? I ask because I have an arb that is about 2 years old that has a similar look and trying to decide if I need to pull it...Also, "demi-longue" = half long as well :) Thanks as always!

What pots did you use for the tomato cuttings? 🪴🪴🪴 They look sturdy to get multiple years of use...
Also, have you considered putting a water softener on just the Hartley and maybe your greenhouse? That would really cut down on the hard water stains on your plants, pots, and your new stone floor! 💦💦💦

Perfect timing, i have a friend with a new little greenhouse that wants to try some tomatoes this winter inside, going to go see if i can start some of her favorites from garden, they were included in your list. Questions: which is your favorite yellow tomato, bellini or patio sunshine? I have grown patio sunshine for two years, HUGE PRODUCER. And when you say put an order in, you referring to your parents garden center? I go through tons of potting soil (both regular and cactus, yep, you created a love for succulents for me) and seed starting soil. I like to get my seed supplies together early. Basil, do you start your Amazel Basil from seed? I could not find this year, and started Pesto Besto, which was good, but not the huge producer the Amazel was. OK, heading out to take clippings now.

Good morning lovelies! I was planning on working outside today but my husband scared a skunk earlier when he left for work! I’ve been worried about this happening since we started seeing them on our homestead the last couple of weeks. I want to bring it to your attention because I have been using the Espoma products like Laura does and critters have been digging up my plants to eat the “yummy” organic fertilizer! Pretty sure the skunks are the major culprit! So be forewarned gardening peeps, critters are attracted to organic fertilizers. I feel like I’m going to have to put barriers around newly planted items so I can still use them.

If there is blood meal or bone meal in it, that will definitely attract certain animals. You can't use it to top dress your gardens; it needs to be deep and well spread out. If you mulch on top, that will really help hide the scent.

Also, after pulling a crop or plant that has spider mites, do you have to wait a certain amount of time before planting again to make sure they aren’t hanging out in the soil and ready to devour the next plants? Or do they die off fairly quickly without plant material to feed off of?

Good morning Laura. I live in Richmond Va and Monticello is not far. The grounds and gardens are magical (despite it’s past) and I’ve grown fruits/veggies from their seeds with quite good success!!!

I’m so glad you showed us that change in your water supply system in raised beds. I’ve been having some issues in my long raised beds not getting enough water. This will for sure be a change I will do after my raspberry are done this season. Thanks from Michigan zone 6a

Good morning Laura! So much for planting fewer tomatoes😂😂😂Before any dager of frost trasplant your peppers and bring them in the green house you will have a head startnext year maybe they will produce too. The same with eggplants and okra. They are perennial in the right zone.🤗💜🤗

Love your channel and have been watching for years. Question... Is it okay to propogate proven winners tomatoes? I know you've said before that you can't propogate their flowers. I was just curious. Thank you and Aaron for sharing your talents and your beautiful family. Your garden is inspiring! 🌹💕

I removed suckers from my tomatoes and now they are about a foot tall. My Dad always planted suckers for our fall crop.

Have you ever thought of making some permanent raised beds in your greenhouse? Thank you so much for being such a ray of sunshine. You have given me a safe place to come and be encouraged. May God Bless you and your family.

DRIP IRRIGATION: I have learned that having a closed loop works best for distribution. It also helps eliminate popping off at the ends. Eager to see how your method compares.

LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! I don't know why I never thought of planting my tomato suckers. Probably a space issue with me but I'm going to watch how you do this and I'll be trying it for sure! Thank you for this great video!

I noticed your Amazel Basil is flowering at the tips. My PW Pesto Besto basil is doing the same but still growing beautifully. Are these varieties good to eat still, after flowering?

Laura, can't you just poke more holes into the drip line that's clogged from the hard water? Just an idea.

Thanks for showing your drip system details! I had been wondering about your system since I am also using the quarter inch inline emitters. My guess is you will be happy with your change. Please keep us posted. I may have raised beds in the future so I am curious how this will work out for you. Your original way seemed much simpler but I was curious about the long run of line. Also seeing your emitters plugged made me feel better. I was super disappointed when these plugged for me. I had hoped they would last much longer than the quarter inch soaker. Guess its normal.

How about replacing the boxwoods in the four terracotta pots with some small little fruit trees? To keep with the food theme in the vegetable garden. Just an idea.

Little 1/4 inch spray nozzles are also a possibility for running the system for a shorter period. They are especially good for seed starting as they keep the area wet, switching over to drip nozzles later on as the plants grow a canopy may be needed. Is that something you would consider?
