when i pull hemis i made a plate that bolts where the intake bolts and then drilled the plate where one of those holley square bore engine plates bolt to it i set it where the middle hole gives the engine a little slant to connect easily to the trans. i also have installed a harbor freight 2500lb winch on my cherry picker where all i do is set the hoist to a high position and then use the remote control so i can be close to the engine and not have to be pumping jack or releasing can hold motor and position it with one hand and use the other hand to mast buttons on remote to lower or raise the engine makes it so much easier. if you want to see how i mounted and set it up i have one video on it on you tube at Dependable auto truck i am going to to a better video on it step by step later on
Seems like if the head bolts dont go in smooth and easy, it could be because they're stretched. Could run a nut down each of them to see if they're stretched.
I built a new engine from the new block up. I know I watched this guys videos, but shit I guess I didn't really listen. I probably used cheap head gaskets, not the cheapest though, and for various reasons I went through 4 sets of head bolts. Now, two years later, I'm pulling the engine to replace a very small head gasket leak, valve cover leak, and a blown rear main seal. I've been upset because I'm a good mechanic and know the right way of doing all of this. I'd definitely say I'm a victim of cheap parts. I was on a budget at the time and did what I had to do. I'm so damn glad I watched this video again for all the small tips.
Excellent videos, Sky! Good to see someone who's a great teacher with a lot of knowledge and attention to detail sharing their wisdom. Keep up the good work!
Any time you do an angle turn for final turn is torque to yield stretched. Never reuse. That's is what I was taught. I had to redo the head gasket cuz of cheap head gasket and reusing the stock bolts on my hemi. Spend the money for Mopar stock gaskets and bolts!
I'm not sure how you figure the first part of your comment. What exactly is the difference between turning the wrench to achieve a certain torque spec, and turning the wrench to achieve a specific angle? You're still tightening the fastener either way correct?
I feel the same way with the looks of the hemi, the other night I had the music playing, opened a beer and just admired the engine in my challenger, don’t judge me lol, great video 👍😁
I just finished installing new Cylinder Heads on my own 2005 Dodge Magnum. No dropped valve seat, but I overheated the engine multiple times previously, so I want to change them for peace of mind. Your videos were incredibly helpful and they made doing this with my limited mechanical experience a much better experience. Thank you so much for doing these. My magnum has been running and driving perfectly since.
Great content , I have watched the 3 videos tied into this with the cam replacement multiple times , basing my cam and lifter replacement in my 5.7 hemi off these videos absolutely the most informative and detailed videos out there
I found when rebuilding LA engines I could source mopar rebuild kit from the dealer for under a hundred dollars at the time and got every gasket for the engine. To put in to perspective just head gaskets where the same price at the time. I think the actual oem gaskets are worth the cost and effort.
I swapped mine over to the new dual coil pack. Best cosmetic upgrade you can do imo. Also I always do my exhaust manifolds before putting on the heads if I’m doing the work in the engine bay.
Good video idea, using a flat sheet of glass to check for openings, cracks, scratches, etc on the block causing leaks, I worked on LS motors, always a headgasket leak
have you seen the taylor shorty wire set the just run a short wire from the old coil right down to the other plug besides the plug the coil is on they work great
When can we expect you to show us how to drop them eagle heads on the pre eagle block. Im in the middle of procuring a set of eagle heads so I'll be ready lol
What’s the difference between the two heads? I didn’t know there was one. As far as rocker arms and push rods go, I think all that is the same. What did they change for the Eagles?? I’ve only owned pre-eagle and I think it’ll stay that way after seeing all the camshaft and lifter failures. I had a lifter failure in my pre eagle 5.7 but it was 100% because of me idling the dog shit out of my car. It would be on, just to be on lol. Lifter doesnt get much oil at idle.
Great video took a thousand notes! 1 question I have always wondered is if you pull the engine for this but you have long tube headers can they be installed on the stand just like the exhaust manifolds?
@@coopdogg871 I will say though that there is potential if you install the headers onto the cylinder heads, then install the cylinder heads onto the short block already in the car. I haven't personally done it yet, but based on previous experience i think it's possible. 👍
Good evening, i just did the heads on my 09 challenger 5.7 and when i did the final torque step of 90° the torque value was from about 75ft lbs all the way up to 98ft lbs. Im worried about the 1 bolt on each side that are at 75ish... i recorded each value as i went. Its the top 12mm on the back of the heads towards the firewall.

Bro you're the best, I was wondering if you could put 6.4 hemi heads on a 5.7 with a drop in stroker kit???? I have a block and heads and I know the valves are going to contact the piston, wondering if the stroker kit would prevent it
Hey bud! Love your channel! Great info! Good vid too. Informative, thanks! A few questions for ya; I got an 06 300c. Do I have to raise the engine to change out the oil pan gasket or can I just drop the oil pump pickup tube with the pan? And secondly; do I have to pull the heads to change the cam (to a 6.4 cam) or can I spin the old cam which I’ve heard will raise the lifters up in their bores? And lastly; will I absolutely need springs for the 6.4 cam and will I need to tune it after? Thanks bud
I've got a 2012 dodge ram Laramie 4x4 I've got 67k miles on it no issue as of now how many miles do you think the engine will last. Was thinking about putting a lot of money in it for building a overlanding truck out of it. Awesome video
Thanks a bunch for the informative video. I struggle with whether to do the replacement head on my 2008 Magnum R/T. I did replace a lot of the coolant related parts last year. If you're still monitoring comments, I'd appreciate your opinion about what to upgrade on this motor if I want to add a supercharger. The motor just turned over 100k miles yesterday. I have read on dodge forums that the pistons on this motor are not strong enough for a SC, especially with a lot of miles on it. I'd love to just swap out the 5.7 for a 6.1, but they're near impossible to find. Thoughts?
I know you're no longer doing the Chanel, but can you suggest all videos I can use to finish installing my 6.1? Had a friend helping me and can no longer help. I'm stuck fishing on my own and this is my first Mopar. Any help to get me to the finish line Thx! I'm to the intake stage so I'm so close!
Hey man, great video. Today was doing struts and lower control arms on my 08 300c, noticed oil looked like it was leaking from the driver side header or head gasket kinda weird motor only has about 100k? I’m scared for it’s life 😆
Awesome video, I do have a question, though. I replaced Cam and lifters because of cylinder 6 mis, then after putting everything back together, I started the vehicle up and hesitant to start and won't stay running, showing cylinder 3 mis now. No comp on cylinder 3 so I pulled heads to try and find out why. Pulled lifters and all look good camera showed no damage to cam and checked 3 times to make sure it is in time, so I re installed everything and n9w cylinder 3 intake pushrod wont go down all of the way. When rocker arm assembly is installed finger tight, it starts to get pressure on intake valve on cylinder 3 and opens it while the rest are closed. Any help would be greatly appreciated
You have to remember that at any given point in an engine cycle at least two of the cylinders are probably in motion to start opening the intake valve, so it's completely normal to have that issue as you are tightening down the rocker arms. My suggestion would be to double check all of your pushrod installation, make sure they are all in the correct position on the backside of the lifter, and also, once the rocker arms are on go ahead and rotate the engine twice by hand to make sure all the rockers are actuating correctly and the pushrods are fully seated before reinstalling the valve covers. 👍
Do they have a full engine gasket kit from the factory? It would be way easier to just buy the kit instead of individual gaskets and finding out I forgot to get “that one “ forcing me to put the build on pause until I get it since I worked on it on a Sunday.
can you explain in further detail where you got those eagle cylinder heads and what pushrods and lifters your using on them? ive dropped a valve seat in my 2006 5.7 charger and need to find a set of reman heads. but when i search for eagle cylinder heads they have different valves on them and look different then the set you have.
Yep, you need to remove the rockers to access the head bolts, and also the pushrods go right through the heads so if you pulled the heads of without removing the pushrods they'd just fall on the ground. 👍
Is it normal for the head not to sit perfectly flush before head bolts snugged down? Seems a tiny bit hung up on the dowels. Had to tap it down with rubber mallet
@ReignitedAuto okay, machine shop accidently give me back my head studs so gotta wait till new ones come in. Seems not to be sitting perfectly, but it's custom thickness cometic head gaskets might be the reason too.
