      I'm suddenly thinking about what would happen if SCP-134 (Stella, star eyed child) overheard it. Would the terminus in her eyes correspond with her thoughts or would it be a collective of thoughts from everyone focusing on the stars from the fifth world perspective since the constellations don't correspond to anything we can see from Earth. Since Stella's father was a physicist that dabbled in the occult and later was told he had a sparkle in his eyes before ultimately descending into madness (a parental sacrifice perhaps). After noticing Stella's eyes, her mother saw it as a bad omen and abandoned her, which is an interesting take on Japanese folklore and an interesting way to have the stars 'reflect' on themselves through her eyes.

    42:52 What? We can DEFINITELY see light from individual stars more than a hundred light-years away. Just this year the James Webb telescope detected a gravitationally-lensed star that's something like 28 billion light years from us, we see it as it existed roughly 12.8 billion years ago (it's more distant than 12.8 billion light years because of the expansion of the universe since that light was emitted).
    Unless you're specifically talking only about stars that are visible to the naked eye, instruments can almost certainly resolve light from short-lived giant stars that are currently expired.

    • @Fakemarcel
      @Fakemarcel 28 дней назад

      Was about to say this, we can definitely see stars that died millions of years ago through special instruments. Director Erlenmeyer's entire note strikes to me as a Sun Tzu's quote:
    "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles."
    He's a Top Brass that studies his enemies moves and tricks before actually doing any sort of offensive and won't stop to learn whatever it is that will make his enemies ticked
    The "A 🌟, A 🌟" could very be possibly an Sleeper code. He said that after he mentioned "Command said that the sleepers have been eradicated, but it is to my belief that the operation was not local" and "We rooted out the moles in England so hard that It will make your head spin".
    As far as I am concerned, No, He's not a Fifthist... Even if he is, He's an asset of the Foundation, not the Church of Fifthism. He just said something that would make a Fifthist tick
    In the world of warfare... Whether it's through the lens of battle or the lens of espionage, the enemy will not just agree that they lost... Until they're convinced they're lost... Demoralized.
    Erlenmeyer will only stop until every single Fifthist came to the Foundation, surrendered and said that they are surrendering themselves through their own mouth. He's the type that's ruthless to his enemies and will systematically use their own trick to do it...

      I don't think they meant the light was literally only a hundred years old, but instead that light we currently *see* is about one hundred years old, basically that our view of visible stars is only lagging by about a century, not as much as the book was implying

    • @pariahzero
      @pariahzero Месяц назад +1

      @@Zolanark There is no "lag by a century" - the further we look into space, the farther you look back in time.
      When you look at the sky at any random night, each star is a snapshot of a different time. Two stars that "appear" next to each other can be thousands of light-years apart, and as a result, the time the light from each star takes to reach your eyes can be tens of thousands of years apart.
      One particular star - Betelgeuse (in the constellation Orion) - is the only star aside from Sol (Our Sun) we've been able to take a picture of and have something other than a single dot. It's got the right combination of big enough and close enough.
      It's near the end of its life, and frankly, it may have already exploded. We won't know until we see the explosion, and only then will we be able to say "yeah, it exploded 642 years ago."

    43:15 the oldest light we get is way older than that.
    The CMBR is from recombination iirc, which is within spitting distance of "in the beginning." The furthest star ever detected has light that is 12.9bn years old.
    It does raise an interesting question- if you look at the sky, and somehow were able to pick out just the stars that would be visible with the naked eye- so no quasars, no galaxies, just the stars that have a +6 or better apparent magnitude (about the dimmest you can see with the naked eye), what would the sky look like?
    Regardless, there's a bunch of visible stars that are further than 100 light years away. Betelgeuse is 500 light years away, and it's visible with the naked eye.
    Not sure where they got the 100 years number. I'd say a majority of the light hitting earth from non-sun stars is probably from dead stars. Not that I would have any idea how to do that estimation.
    Pushing back a bit on what seems to be the general consensus in favour of extra credits, I do agree that it's helpful for contextualising stories, but if it's prone to individual errors, especially since the analysis can be wrong, it might be more trouble than it's worth. Like in this case, around 50:00 they point out that Class B amnestics are effective because they make you forget, but don't dwell on the fact that Class B specifically are used to "wipe back," so to speak. Class A would be useless here, because you would need to be able to prompt the memory you were trying to remove. That's the sort of thing I'd find useful to have pointed out- when people say "class B," they mean "we're going to nuke the last two weeks of your life."

    I like to think that the book itself actually isn’t that anomalous. instead is mostly just very good at indoctrinating the reader, and the reality bending comes from so many people believing the same thing simultaneously. No one individual has full reality bending powers but instead reality is being slightly bent in hundreds of thousands of ways or by the amalgamation of every readers subconscious into one reality breaking entity.
    I also totally think this was one of, if not the first, real uses of scp 2000

The wikipedia pages on the org, parent orgs, child orgs, both men, and various other followers read like real life SCP's. Would recommend. "A Star, A Star"
    For some reason this makes me think of Sagittarius A* (where the asterisk is meant to be pronounced as "Star")
    The supermassive black hole at the very center of our galaxy.
    Black holes, especially supermassive ones, are kinda the epitome of "dead stars". It fits with the "some stars in the sky are dead, but we still see their ancient image" as we can detect it even though we can't see it, etc. Idk, sounds like exactly the sort of thing this star based fifthist sect would be all about.

    Your correction makes only some sense to me, but I think you mean what we can see with the naked eye comes from very close? (according to google, most objects we can see are relatively hear however the value is all over the place seen between 1000ly and 10,000ly on just the first page of results). This still wouldn't prevent the effect of seeing "dead stars" as it were - tho the occurence rate is low enough that it could be very possible we don't see any with the naked eye - with various telescopes and specialized space-telescopes though, we can see much further, and that indeed means we can see stars that have already collapsed, changed form, gone supernova, and etc, because we are still seeing that light as it was when it was emitted, which functionally allows us to see back in time.
    We've actually learned quite a bit about the early universe this way. The further we look, the further back in time - I think Hank Green had a whole 3-part yts/tt responding to someone having an existential crisis about this that's real neat. The occurrence rate of, shall I call them "undead stars" is about 0.0028% - idrk what I'm talking about as this is just some cursory googling and what I remember picking up from various sources over the years as a pop science weakling. There are also a handful of objects we can sometimes see with the naked eye that are quite far away, like andromeda (although whether you could classify that as a singular object is its own discussion).
    anyway, the story does describe people seeing a star dying, so there is some discrepancy there I suppose.

    So, this was another amazing article, you're killing it Volgun!
    But I did want to suggest possibly indenting the Extra Credit to denote sections that are taking verbatim from the original text. For example around the 42:00 mark there's the statement "Access to the document is to be... ... or an O5 personnel." Or "Did you know that... and then become like the stars!"
    It's not a massive change, but it'd be helpful I think. The change in voice is an excellent touch for the purely auditory watchers, but I honestly get a tad impatient and read ahead occasionally.

    It’s always interesting actually coming across origin entries to some of these SCP entries. Never thought too much about the Fifthist but now have a big interest as it’s part of that memetic stuff I love about the SCP multiverses. I thought there was a parallel to Scientology but this definitely goes in a Memetic direction!
    As for the church it seems someone thought it was a good idea to publish this book only to realize its effects were cause a lot more trouble then planned. Hence why they helped with information suppression. This book is obviously designed to rewrite the mind into what the church desires, but hides it as a self help book. Often the case with any cult wanting new members. Would like to speculate more but I don’t know a lot of the fifthest church so definitely would love to hear more entries on this topic

    43:24 I hate to nitpick your nitpicking, but I don't see what's wrong with the back cover statement? There's no star besides the sun close enough to us that we can observe it in anything remotely close to real time. E.g. when we watched Sanduleak -69 202 go supernova in 1987, it didn't happen as we were watching it, SN 1987A occurred 168,000 years ago, but we only knew that SK -69 202 was dead in 1987. There are probably a handful more like it that we'll observe before the end of the year, but they've all been dead for millennia without us knowing.
    I'm guessing you mean with the naked eye though? Even then, we can see stars over 16,000 lightyears away, so doing the math with ~3 SNs occuring in our galaxy per century, as a ratio of galaxy to area around Earth up to a radius of 16,000 ly, you still get an expected value of 1-2 stars that have gone supernova in the past 16,000 years, visible to the naked eye, that we won't know about until some time in the next 16,000 years. Obviously this is lazy math, not taking into account that space isn't flat (or is it? 🤔) and the density function of BSGs in that radius. But still, given we're in a relatively dense part of the galaxy, that EV is probably higher, if anything.

    • @sheakennedy-ordway1156
      @sheakennedy-ordway1156 5 месяцев назад

      Just going to put this one out there, 'space' isn't flat. If it were, all math would cease to make sense. But, if you have the time, check out Mage the Ascension lore on the Virtual Adepts. Their whole thing is about breaking the laws of physics in a way that almost makes sense in that kind of model.
