As weird as this may sound, we actually look forward to charging on long trips. It creates a bit of a logistical challenge with routing, but it seems to make us feel more “chill” since we are not trying to burn the wind getting from place to place. Our driving behavior is identical to gas, and life is just good. Having a CCS tesla adapter also opens up a lot of options for routing.
Los Angeles to Las Vegas & back this week in our EV6. Over half the EV chargers we encountered were not working. Those that were we were lucky to get 30KW. The giant mega Electrify America station in Baker Ca only 3 outta 20 working. Tesla station 100% working.
Walmart should give $500 to Audi, Kia, Ford, etc for each CCS car they sell in the US considering how much cash we are all dropping while we charge and chill.
Hotels probably don't want to put in higher output chargers because it would most likely result in more locals stopping by for free juice. For 6-8kW it's not as worth it to do that.
Enjoyed vid. When I would roadtrip I always brought a bucket with cleaning materials--especially for the windshield! When charging there is always plenty of time for such things. (Yeah, ain't commenters wonderful.) Best wishes, from Florida.
Watching these road trips just makes me appreciate how good and care feel Tesla eco system is. Never have I got to a supercharger, plug in and feel I need to check if I’m charging before I go into a store, I just know it will be, it basically a guarantee
Sort of funny story, the very first time I supercharged it was a bad charger (downtown Sacramento parking garage). What are the odds? Ever since I never encountered a single issue. Amazing network.
We have the same year and trim E tron. We’ve done several road trips using EA stations. Doesn’t matter how hot it is the Audi will always max rate charge. It’s always the charger’s fault. EA is getting better, but you can count on one charger always offline.
That’s my experience too, on the other side of the Atlantic. It seems to taper off just a bit earlier on deep charges though.. I wonder if it’s more of an algorithm- than a temperature thing.
Love these very informative video"s, I just got my etron Sportback and the information you provide has given me confidence to do my drive from Canada to Florida this winter. I find the Audi dealers know so little about their electric vehicles. Thank you once again.
Great video. Very helpful. My longest cross-country journey was 900 miles in one day with a Tesla Model S 90D. Lusk, WY, to Marshfield, WI. 13 hours driving, 3 hours charging. The car can handle up to 110 kW. That's OK. We're working with a 7 year old car with over 100k miles.
Ive noted that several of your videos have shown problems with EA charging stations. Another thing I have observed is that unlike gas stations, the charging stations do not offer things like windshield cleaning materials and air for tires. Will charging stations improve in the future?
Sure would be helpful if both cars and chargers showed how many Kw's the car is requesting. It would stop the station shuffling trying to find out which is at fault. Thanks for the vids.
Funny moment at 15:23. Kyle: I’ve calculated out and to run the air conditioner and cool the battery is 6 kW Alyssa: rolls eyes with a look of and why should I care? I am so familiar with this scene :-)
Weird that through St Louis went 64 to 270 to 70 when could have gone 70 to St Charles once crossed the bridge from Illinois. I assume went to Walmart at 70 and Veterans Memorial. Fun to see roads you know. Love the Arch!
Yeah, and who knew there was such a thing as the water reviewer Kyle mentioned he follows? I don't know how it is in the US (heard the story of Flint, Michigan) but where I come from you can just drink perfectly good water from the tap!
Not sure when you guys filmed this video, but Audi has released a software update for the Etron that released some of the buffer and increased my 2021 eTron range by about 15 miles! Unfortunately Audi makes you take it into the dealer to get the update as they don’t do it over the air. Might be worth looking into though!
When you're at your remote charing stations, are there generators behind those walls/gates that are at every charging place you go to in order to create the battery charging for your Audi? Thanks, just learning all about electric cars and charging on roadtrips and how to plan those trips/stops etc. Thanks and enjoying the channel.
I just drove that same stretch of road. Enjoyed seeing the same locations. I even stayed at the Salina hotel. All the chargers were in use at the time so I had to go to Casey’s in my Ioniq 5. I don’t get “ripping it” when I have extra charge. Can someone explain why I should just save that charging time and the resources?
At the end, min. 52.21 you've gotten home and you say you're going to "calibrate the bottom end of the pack . . . " what to you mean by that? I just recently bought a pre-owned etron and I'm trying to learn all this stuff. I presume it's doing some sort of reset on the batteries to help extend battery life? Thanks for explaining. I really enjoy your posts.
9%-100% in 56 min. is pretty good. try that with another car with similar battery size, most are like, 1hour and 30 minutes. Even the newer teslas are a little over an hour. I wonder when the new upgraded etron comes out if it will be as good at charging, or if they screw it up. Range is suposed to be good from what Audi claims!
1:00 Not wrong about need for chargers at hotels upgraded. But it also shows the need for a more efficient vehicle that goes same distance with less batteries.
Why is it only Walmart are invested in charging infrastructure? Why not the fast food chains or the gas station snack shop parking where 20 minutes charging would make sense?
Thanks! I just did my first cross-country run in a 2015 Tesla that I will be trading for a 2023 Polestar soon and it's good to know it's possible to make the trip without Tesla's Supercharger network.

I don't understand your low efficiency (driving habits/wrong mode/old software?). In my 2021 on 20" wheels in warm weather, I'm seeing 2.8 mi/kWh at highway cruising speeds, up to 3.6 mi/kWh at slower speeds and in traffic.
Thanks for the video, Kyle. What do you think about regen settings on the e-tron? I usually keep it in auto for longer highway trips to provide better coasting, and manual for max regen when I'm driving in the city. Do you have a preferred setting to help efficiency?
Coasting is more efficient than regen which does not put 100% of the kinetic energy into the battery pack (one-pedal driving is a Tesla marketing invention to hide the inability to develop a blended braking system). The key to e-Tron efficiency is to maximize coasting because it has two induction motor and gobs of momentum thanks to that hefty weight. Drive with Dynamic suspension (lower ride height is worth about 10% efficiency on the highway) with motors in D. You can try Efficiency which drops the ride height even more above 35 mph but it's very soft and on bad US roads you will hit bump stops. I routinely see 3.3-3.6 mi/kWh in moderate traffic.
