Kyle's enthusiasm for cars is so infectious! Whether it's a top of the line Tesla Model S P100D or a quirky little i3, he's just so happy to get behind the wheel. It's fun to see and I love going for an EV ride with him.

Wow, small world! I grew up in the town near where Kyle first stopped to gas up the i3. I realized it when he drove past the church my family belonged to. I may be in another minority, because I starting watching this video for the i3 part. My wife has one, and I've decided it might be a fun challenge to road-trip in it.
Hi Kyle, I picked up my 2014 i3 Rex and drove it 970 miles on a combination of charging and gas. I used 15 gallons in total. Not too bad. One thing that I was surprised by was how comfortable the drive was. The seat are awesome.
The E-tron is such a nice car. Vastly superior to any Tesla when it comes to design and build (both interior and exterior) imo. Actually, the E-tron is the best selling car here in Norway so far in 2020. And currently EV's make out over 50% of all new car sales here. Thanks for sharing your roadtrip with us :)

It's hard for people to realize (was for me, too) that a continually-running 34hp generator filling a battery is MUCH different that just a 34hp engine in a 3000lb car. Analogy: Much like a quiet stream continually filling a hydroelectric reservoir, ready for a spike in usage, drivers RARELY need the i3's fully 170hp (unless you're racing up Pikes Peak at record speed). If you understand the rare limitations of this car, it is a brilliantly thought-out powertrain. I wish other carmakers would follow the path of 100mile EV paired with a simple & small range extender (micro-turbines anyone?)

What a great look at the two ends of the spectrum for EV. The i3 is painful (laugh) and they e-tron looks cool (always been an Audi fan). Neither can hold a candle to my Model 3 Performance in my opinion. The e-tron seems like its trying to hard to be cool (laugh). In any case, love your channel. You do a great job, but Alyssa is honestly my favorite thing. She doesn't hide her emotions well, can read her facial expressions when your geeking out about the tech. I hope she never play poker (laugh)! Keep up the good work and if you ever get back to Southern California love to do a meet up and talk EVs. Not sure you ever get that far south to San Diego, but you would love it down here.
Do you notice a smell when the range extender is used? We just bought a 2014 i3. Just to see how it works with the range extender, we let the battery run out and kept going. When I got to a charging station and got out of the car, I noticed an odor. Is that normal?
Is this just swapping cars for testing or is the BMW i3-REx gone? I had a 2017 Prius Prime and 2014 BMW i3-REx to trade-in for our Std Rng Plus Model 3. We kept the BMW, our backup.
Reminds me of a few road trips I took when I got my i3 in 2014. Not much charging infrastructure in yet, so most trips were on the range extender. I really liked the i3, it had some leading edge technology when it first came out. But it’s a bit dated now. I’ll be replacing my second i3 lease with a Model Y in a month or two.
John Edwards For one, it has limited range. My 2017 has a range of 110 miles, the 2020 has a range of 126 miles. Not much of an improvement. It doesn’t have autonomous driving, just adaptive cruise control. No lane keeping assist, no lane departure warning, no blind spot detection. The adaptive cruise operates on 1 camera that can have issues with fog, rain and low sun. In these conditions it kicks off the cruise control a lot. It does have self parking, I used it 1 time when I first got it. It was OK, but I can parallel park just fine on my own. The only difference between my i3 and a new one is 16 miles more range and Apple CarPlay, and both of those were added on the 2018 model year.
Cypress trees. Would the REV engine run out of gas or does it cut off when low fuel? Once EA sites are back up I'd like to see what the max average trip speed would be in an i3. Your SC to SC to maximize Tesla trips speed, but for an i3 (with software mods).
It just turns off when the fuel level is low enough - similar to running out of gas but without hurting a fuel pump. Pre software change, it would shut off when only 1.9 gallons were run though, now it'll let the near full tank size of 2.4 gallons go through. I would like to see this charger hopping as well!
Good to see you using Waze for what’s it’s worth. Just having it on with no destination loaded will give you hazard and police warnings. 🚓 BMW or Mini EV? Similar range right?
Does Nick have a RUclips channel or social media? I'm interested in seeing how he copes with charging during a track day, plus I think we're both listed as participants on the same upcoming Road Atlanta track weekend!
RA, October 24-25! Are you a member of Chin? You can DM me on Twitter (@Genyosai) for track day charging strategy at RA, as they haven't any DCFC on premise. So you can trick the motor into charging the car while its not moving? Interesting. In the Volt, the engine is big enough to fully replace the battery, but it never charges per se. Of course it (and the tank - 9g, about 400 miles worth) takes up a lot more of the volume. How does the heat work in i3? In the Volt they were thinking "hybrid" when they designed it, so electric heat is an afterthought; resistance only, they didnt add the $12 reversing valve to the A/C to make it a heat pump, they stupidly figured you would run the engine for heat.
@@OutofSpecMotoring Disappointing, I would have expected Germans to go the extra 1.61 km and fit a heat pump. The Volt will connect the engine to the wheels once you are at speed because that's more efficient than converting torque to electricity and back again; its interesting to watch the power provision bars as it accelerates. OTOH I would assume the i3 always runs the engine at a single (most efficient) RPM. That could make for a REALLY quiet muffler.
Kyle or Alysa, I'm getting ready to order my Model Y and have questions to ask but don't know where to turn. If I use your information as a reference when I order, you get extra free milage? If so, would you be willing to help with the questions?
@@askeeter84 I plan to pull a small trailer, about 16'..... I will probably be travelling full time and know that when you have a trailer hooked up, FSD doesn't work. Will the basic autopilot work though? Another question, if in camp mode, will the motor battery keep the 12v battery charged so I can have a small inverter plugged in?? Last question, if I'm towing most of the time, would it still be best to buy the FSD for the possible resale value? I'm thinking of getting a Cybertruck when they come out. Might be easier to tow with. Thanks in advance!!
Kyle, so Nick uses his Model 3 performance at the track and it has the Martian MW03 wheels. Are they the 7.5 one's like you got for yours? Does Nick find that he gets better times with the Martian wheels than he did with the Tesla default wheels? What are those times? Once you promised you'd test those track times with the Martian wheels and let us know, but I haven't seen you post those time comparisons yet.
@@OutofSpecMotoring Kyle, you got the 7.5 Martians because they were best for the consumption test, but I guess you're saying that Nick has the wider Martians because they're better for the track times. Does Nick have the 8.0s? I'm wondering which size would be the best now, to get good track times but also good consumption results. I'm wondering what your track times are with your 7.5 Martians also.
@@OutofSpecMotoring Kyle, on the RUclips channel Dirty Tesla, he compared the Wh/Mile and Efficiency of the 8.5" Martians vs the Wh/Mile and Efficiency of the Aero wheels and tires which came with his non-performance dual motor AWD Model 3. See the results ruclips.net/video/V3J0Gir8reo/видео.html It's not clear whether the greater Wh/Mile and lower Efficiency of the 8.5" Martians is because he didn't have low rolling resistance tires, or if it was because his Martian wheels were 8.5". I'm wondering if perhaps the 8.0" Martians are the best way to go, rather than the 7.5" or the 8.5". What are your thoughts on all of this?
Ha! Yeah. We don't care for the summer fragrance. We think it smells like earth after a heavy rain on a hot day. Winter smells nice... More subtle, too.
This really puts the i3 in a bad light. Any i3 built in the last 5 years could make that trip with NO stops. When mine is fully charged in the summer it shows 170 miles on battery and 80 miles on the range extender. Total: 250 miles.
I would have a 5 gal Saftey can of gas strapped down and along. Lol. But that’s why I bought a Y ! There will be a day when petroleum station have EV charging. Those that jump on this early will help the mission!
Those trees at that lake were adapting to the water levels the crowns were several feet above they must be lots more water for a fair amount of time for them to have done this.
Interesting to watch but I am afraid the current EV is not practical. I will be watching and get one if they get these things to where they are practical.
E-tron is nice nut the overall range has to improve...say to at LEAST around 300 to 350 miles. 200 miles range? Are you kidding me...In 2 to 3 years, we should most car makers coming out with EV's with 400 to 500 miles range. Probably should wait, if you can wait.

Nonsense, the i3 is a great car, plus you have the range extension so no issues
Do you notice a smell when the range extender is used? We just bought a 2014 i3. Just to see how it works with the range extender, we let the battery run out and kept going. When I got to a charging station and got out of the car, I noticed an odor. Is that normal?
Love the Clemson headrests. Is that stock? :)
I believe so
Is this just swapping cars for testing or is the BMW i3-REx gone?
I had a 2017 Prius Prime and 2014 BMW i3-REx to trade-in for our Std Rng Plus Model 3. We kept the BMW, our backup.
Go Tigers!!! Love Clemson Nick living in Columbia.
🐅🏈🏆
What would you say is your combined MPGe when you combine your REX with the battery?
Reminds me of a few road trips I took when I got my i3 in 2014. Not much charging infrastructure in yet, so most trips were on the range extender. I really liked the i3, it had some leading edge technology when it first came out. But it’s a bit dated now. I’ll be replacing my second i3 lease with a Model Y in a month or two.
Omg! Leaving a BMW for a Tesla? Are you sure????!
Giuliano Federico yes, I’m picking up my Model Y this weekend.
What a cool car. Is it built as nice as it looks.
Yes!
@@OutofSpecMotoring Oh yes, must try one soon.
MINI SE is the better buy when new, but i3 used
Hi love your roed trips can you do more in a i3 or i5 I love cars and roed trips ❤️👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🔌🔋
Does Nick have a RUclips channel or social media? I'm interested in seeing how he copes with charging during a track day, plus I think we're both listed as participants on the same upcoming Road Atlanta track weekend!
He does upload to his channel, not sure what it is but he’s @Genyosai on Twitter
RA, October 24-25!
Are you a member of Chin? You can DM me on Twitter (@Genyosai) for track day charging strategy at RA, as they haven't any DCFC on premise. You can also watch raw video (I'm no RUclipsr lol) of me on track. Just see this vid and grab the channel info from there : ruclips.net/video/XbycJKZUkIs/видео.html
I was young and did stuff some people would've called dumb with my car back in 2001 but why are squatted trucks a thing?
What would calculate your MPG is while using the REX?
Love my i3 for local and love the MYP for longer trips too.
Have always wanted an a3 etron, too bad they're still a little too expensive for me
So you can trick the motor into charging the car while its not moving? Interesting. In the Volt, the engine is big enough to fully replace the battery, but it never charges per se. Of course it (and the tank - 9g, about 400 miles worth) takes up a lot more of the volume.
How does the heat work in i3? In the Volt they were thinking "hybrid" when they designed it, so electric heat is an afterthought; resistance only, they didnt add the $12 reversing valve to the A/C to make it a heat pump, they stupidly figured you would run the engine for heat.
The motor isn’t connected to the wheels, just directly to the battery. Other than that it’s the normal i3 BEV - and yes, resistive heating
When you got the E-Tron home, how did you charge it? Is the I3 charger head the same as the E-Tron?
It’s J1772 and I plug into our free Tesla destination chargers at our house with an adapter
Why didn’t you keep the i3 below 70 mph??
Kyle you should a made it really sporty and used a 2012 Nissan Leaf with a couple bars missing .. LOL
Ha! That definitely would have been interesting
You could charge on a Tesla wall charger...
Kyle or Alysa, I'm getting ready to order my Model Y and have questions to ask but don't know where to turn. If I use your information as a reference when I order, you get extra free milage? If so, would you be willing to help with the questions?
You may want to also try hitting them up on Twitter. You will love the model Y! It’s super comfy
@@askeeter84 bummer.... not on twitter... I even gave up on Facebook...
@@royallclark6331 oh man well if you have qquestions i can answer some if you need me to
@@askeeter84 I plan to pull a small trailer, about 16'.....
I would have kept a full 5 gallon fuel can in the back just in case, thats 2 fill ups!
I don’t have the wider martians what nick runs yet but one day soon
My bad. I see now there aren't any 8.0" Martians. They're either 7.5 or 8.5 or 9.5.
Smells like a JCPenny catalogue lol
Ha! Yeah. We don't care for the summer fragrance. We think it smells like earth after a heavy rain on a hot day. Winter smells nice... More subtle, too.
Why does he have a passenger seat in a “track only” car?
So the Audi didn’t have a native understanding of chargers on the route?
It did, but they’re all down.
Y don't you just took a reserve canister? That's right,...then it wouldn't be so exciting! I like it😂😂
You should test electric cars you can buy from alibaba. Some of them look somewhat alright
Why not do the trip planner in the audi gps, instead of having to use your phone?
It's really not that great at helping you map out a route on a map overlay. Plus I still trust plugshare to show every charger instead of the Audi MMI
I would love an s4 ev. Love audi. Just can’t get a gas car.
Perhaps the e-tron GT is for you!
Or a Taycan Sport Tourismo.
Audi needs to make an rs4 and rs6 electric
So do you make more stops on the same trip with the i3 as a full electric or less/more?
More or less the same - but takes less time filling up with fuel
This really puts the i3 in a bad light. Any i3 built in the last 5 years could make that trip with NO stops. When mine is fully charged in the summer it shows 170 miles on battery and 80 miles on the range extender. Total: 250 miles.
The i3 keeps being the car that I expect to like but ends up being a let-down for me.
Should've come back thru Charlotte so I could wave at you! Haha.
That would have been an interesting interaction - “we are now driving to Charlotte so we can see a viewer wave at us!” 🤣
But seriously, I’m in Charlotte all the time. Reach out if you see me there on Instagram / twitter
I'm pretty sure @Ecodweeb has used that or less as an excuse to make a trip!
I would have a 5 gal Saftey can of gas strapped down and along. Lol. But that’s why I bought a Y ! There will be a day when petroleum station have EV charging. Those that jump on this early will help the mission!
Yes, I used to carry a spare jug of fuel when I had my old i3s - not anymore as this is pretty much used inside our city
Those trees at that lake were adapting to the water levels the crowns were several feet above they must be lots more water for a fair amount of time for them to have done this.
Yeahhh go Australia
I guess putting a five gallon can of gasoline in the hatch would have made it too easy? :0)
Those chargers are *still* down?
Interesting to watch but I am afraid the current EV is not practical. I will be watching and get one if they get these things to where they are practical.
Its a city car purposely built for city driving. If you want an EV for long road trips, get a Tesla..
@@mamadouaziza2536 I will once they become practical.
@@JohnSmith-ug5ci
But is practically in your opinion?
What is the name of your fav Starbucks drink again?
Why don't you just get a 5 gallon gas can? I guess it would smell of fumes, but I'm sure you could figure out a solution for that.
Yes there’s room the front trunk for a fuel can - around 2.5 gal
@@OutofSpecMotoring Briggs and Stratton 2.5 gal spare can fits perfectly. Walmart sells them.
"I haven't seen what winter smells like yet"......that's....that's not a thing.
According to Audi, it is a thing
E-tron is nice nut the overall range has to improve...say to at LEAST around 300 to 350 miles. 200 miles range? Are you kidding me...In 2 to 3 years, we should most car makers coming out with EV's with 400 to 500 miles range. Probably should wait, if you can wait.
It’s not much less range than my Tesla
Oh bite your tongue! It has features not even the holy Tesla has!? Stop itttttt 😂😂 I've looked at this as a replacement to my Model 3. The quality is on a whole different level. Especially with the double pane glass
The no gas vanity plates are super lame.
Etron seems really thirsty.
Yes, it is!
