    the keyboardist and founding member Neal Doughty just turned 76 today and still rocking that organ on tour this year with Styx and Loverboy. Kevin Cronin the lead singer wrote this song in 1976 when he rejoined the band after a short hiatus. He wrote the lyrics while driving from Chicago to L.A. on a paper sack. It is on the 1978 album You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish. Also from the same album check out Time For Me To Fly. The greatest breakup song of all time.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth 2 года назад

      Happy (belated) birthday to Neal! Pretty much the luckiest guy in music history: on his first day at the University of Illinois, he met Allen Gratzer, and thus began a band now in its *56th* year. Awesome.
      And yes, "Time for Me to Fly" is about Kevin dumping his first girlfriend (the girl from "Tough Guys") because he thought the relationship had gotten toxic. He wrote that one in 1973, when the band was on the trip to Denver that led to their getting stuck in the mountains (and inspiring Gary Richrath to write "Ridin' the Storm Out"). After that, Kevin became infatuated with the woman who would become his first wife (Denise), but by 1976 he was tired of their only being friends. So this is his "let's date, already!" song.
      (The marriage didn't work, but that's for later songs.)

    Yes, finally! Another reactor gets past the sappy 1980s stuff and reaches the TRUE Speedwagon, an extremely energetic live band that is only partly captured on LP. Check out some of their concerts on YT, or the live "You Get What You Play For" album. There's a reason the record company stuck with them, even after three changes in lead singer (Kevin Cronin, heard here, was brought in for the 2nd album, got fired during the recording of the 3rd, and had to be negotiated back in, at the label's insistence, for the 6th) and even though it took *eight* albums before they truly broke through.
    Gary Richrath (lead guitar) was fire and Allen Gratzer (drums) keeps the pace going, full-time; the energy never flags. (But they were both out of the band by 1989, so when I'm talking about the live shows, nothing more recent than that, please. JMO.)
    I usually throw out about a dozen suggestions here, but let's just keep to the top two: "Ridin' the Storm Out" (the show closer before this one, and usually still either the set closer or the last encore) and "Golden Country", which needs to be seen live to be truly appreciated. I recommend the Rockpalast (German TV) show from 1979, but it was power any time Gary got to cut loose.
    Thank you very much.

    Wife and I are going to see REO Speedwagon in September (2023)
    I’ve been listening to this song over and over for the past two weeks. I cannot wait to hear it performed live. 🥳🔥

    REO Speedwagon was one of the first concerts I went to. Their energy blew me away. Rick Neilson from Cheap Trick came out and did a guitar battle with Gary Richarth (the guitarist on this song). If I close my eyes, I can still feel the energy from that show.

    Saw REO at wheeling high school in 1973 I think sitting in their field house floor. Gary Richrath was a great guitar player and they rocked the place that night. They never made it big untill Kevin Cronin stepped in on vocals. Saw them last year at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphy’s Ca. They still rock!

    It was a great concert song! Lex is on the money once more. I've seen them do this song just that way. Even the studio version rocks like one. They closed with "Ridin' the Storm Out". Another song by REO that always sounds much better live! Nice reaction. Lex is so great and cute. You're a lucky man Brad.

    Good reaction guys as always ...was rocking to this in the navy in 78 can't tuna piano but you can tune a fish...the band took their name from a truck....The Reo Speedwagon was produced from 1915-1953, pausing for WWII...and a rugged truch she was ...

    I won an REO album, Live-You Get What You Play For, off a radio call in contest back in the '70's. I was probably 13 or 14 and my mom took me to pick it up. I didn't even really know who they were but it quickly became my favorite!! Saw them live in '81 and again in the '90's and hope to see them again! I see a lot of suggestions for Golden Country it's a must!!

    Lol lol. Lex ... it's so great when the backing vocals finally get you pulled into it and it's almost like it's praise music and then at some point you do this little double row to each side that I haven't hardly ever seen before but it makes perfect sense. And then there was another moment later I forget when it was oh I know it was when he started almost rapping or I guess the more precise word would be scatting to the repetitious background vocals after the guitar solo. Got to got to get get get get got to get rolling that kind of thing there's just this look of surprising joy that came over your face for a minute. Glad you guys covered this classic song.

    I saw them 9 times in my life more than any other band. They were from a town 30 miles from mine and I saw them for the first time before they hit the big time at the Jr. College in Danville, Illinois and the crowd size might’ve been 700-800 at best. Great band to see live. Their guitar player died many years ago. RIP Gary Ritchrath. (SP) He was exceptional!

    Back On the Road Again, or Golden Country (live version) probably my favorites. Once they started their power ballad stuff, I was done with them. You couldn't get away from it.
