- This is a story about Hong Kong's Aberdeen Harbor - once famous for its floating villages and boat dwellers - told through two generations of 'boat people'. Today, flashy yachts have edged out the old boat families, and a ban on trawler fishing later this year will only accelerate the drift to dry land. Together, Mr. Leung Siu-yung, a fisherman, and his son tell of their hardship, struggles, and hopes for the future.

I like the way the man expresses himself on the video. Things do change. Here in USA too. I wosh it was the same here in state of Oregon where we sisters grew uo. Slam Oregon. The Best to this fisherman. Than you. I like seeing the Chinese in HK. I worked years ago for 2 Chinese in their Restaurants in Cal. Also one family had me in their home in San Fransico, Caluf. Presidents Birthday February 1989. Stayed 2 days. Had a big dinner in a Resta. In SF. Then next day went to Madera Calif back to work.
I love watching these videos of the boat people in Hong Kong. I saw this one before. The family here does not seem as close as the boy in the 1977 and 1980 Video on the family fishing boat. The one in 77 showed the grandpa and grandma and the one in 1980 should alot of family. This man seems so lonely. Was is his wife not there?
The sons and father should see each other more though. I worked for 2 Chinese famines in 1987 and 1989 for 11 yrs. I was in the #1 home with their family in Feb in 1989. In San Francisco. The mans mother and father was there too. God Bless you all.🌍❤🙋
This is great! I grew up in Aberdeen and have met a lot of boat people while growing up. I respect their hardwork. Great job and thanks for sharing.

I was in Aberdeen few times during my trips to Hong Kong but i couldn't believe these fishermen are such tough people... only few days a year at home with his family! Nice place that you wanna come back to, i loved to take a boat from there to Lamma island and back as well.

For some reason that brought tears to my eyes, I remember Hong Kong and her people from having lived there as a child with such fondness, truly golden moments abide with me to this day.
Your father probably does not suspect how boring working in an office from 9 to 5 can be. Nor really appreciate what the sea has taught him and that which those who work in offices will probably never know.

Was this taken in ,2012? It is sad in away he could only come home ,3 ,,- 4 times a yr for a few days . And his older son maybe 19, said we don't have to verbally talk to love each other. I wish I cohld gave met this man and maybe his wife. I wonder how his sons are today, and if he is Alive. thanks
This is rather sad in that the father and his son are not close. Also, the father's absence had made his son rather effeminate.
Oh, young man... Talk to your father. As much as you can! About anything, doesn’t really matter! Because you are gonna regretfully miss it once your Dad forever sails away...😪

I really believe boys and girls should be close to their parents. At least call every 2 or 3 months . Or once a month. I dont think all Chinese kids are that way. The mans son seems rightly educated. He does not speak of his mother. Or siblings I guess. I wonder if his father is still around and maybe he talks to his son. More. I worked for a Chinese man and his wife 8n Madera Cal US in Sept 1988 till July 89. He had me to their house for a week end in San Francisco, Cal in Feb 1989. His folks lived there and 4 kids. I was 44 then. Then another Chinese man bought the restaurant. I worked for him 11 years.

I live in Aberdeen. My grandpa and my father were fisherman and lived there for a long time.
But I think many HongKongers forget where is Aberdeen, because of no MTR there?
