How to Deburr copper pipe

  • Deburring copper pipe or any metal pipe is important, as the burr can cause turbulence in the pipe, resulting in erosion of the pipe wall. External pipe burrs also need removing, especially if using push fit fittings, as the O rings can be damaged, if burrs are present.

As it got towards the end I was worrying about the copper falling into the pipe - your solution was ingenious. Brilliant video - thank you!

If you haven't got a brush like that there are other substitutes to catch the burrs. Simplest is toilet paper. Take several joined sheets from the roll and twist them as you push them in to the pipe, keep going for a few inches but don't force it solid - we are only trying to catch a few burrs! Push just below the end. Use a screw driver or anything else at hand (a pencil) to hook the end of the paper and pull slow back out. Worst that happens is it breaks off - you need a longer tool to fish the remains out. If a little bit is left in it wont matter, the paper will slowly dissolve and come out the taps or other termination.
Other (better?) alternatives are cotton wool, makeup remover pads or bit of sponge. Attach a bit of string if you're really worried about not being able to get back out. If you have the more common barrel type deburr tool then you can drop the string in the pipe too and grab it with needle noses after.

I always thought you had copper pipes in the states 😱

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL Год назад

      What are you talking about???
Copper pipes are in the USA and have been for decades.
For a very long time now, there's been legislation that makes it mandated potable water pipes contain less than 0.25% of lead, which makes copper the best choice.
I am aware that new builds are using less and less copper piping due to the insane cost of copper now and are using that "plastic" stuff.
On that, I totally do not agree! I would NEVER allow anything but copper in our home.
That being said, I'm aware that one of the other problems with copper that has helped in the reduction of its use, is the issue with pinholes developing.
I'm not sure how the plastic pipes stand up to decades of use, however.
I have in fact had pinhole leaks a couple of times here. Fortunately, they were in the basement (unfinished) and were on straight runs. So replacing them with the thicker (much more expensive) copper pipes was easy.
Next week, I'm also now going to install a sediment filter because there's a lot of sediment in the city lines in this area.
      Always something, isn't it. LOL

It was a bit of a short visit! My mate wanted to go in December, but the trains were on strike, this was the first chance we had to get there. My mate suggested the 17:25 train, so I got us two return, open tickets on my phone app. We went in a pub in Darwen, close to the railway station and had a couple of pints. At 17:10 I went to the loo and on my return, my mate had got another pint in 😱
Turns out he thought the train was 17:40, so we ended up going on the 18:25 train, we only went in one pub close to Clitheroe station, then had an Indian and missed the train, so had to get a Taxi home 😂
If he wants to go to Clitheroe again, I’m only going if we catch a much earlier train 😉

Does the burred edge have to be dead smooth? I’ve noticed that your tool by making a scraping noise is actually ‘skipping’ as it cuts. Are you removing the sharp flackie bits or are you completely removing that inner proud rim?

    • @ultimatehandyman

No, it does not need to be smooth, as long as the burr is removed it will be fine 👍

What, actual human beings staffing the check outs? B&M are great for the cheap silicones. The stuff that one uses to stick and seal bath perimeters to walls, before applying final, neat bead of sani-sil. Screwfix no nonsense was £2.50, 3 years ago. Now it's £5.50 per cartridge.

B&M are great, if there is a queue at the checkout, they open another till. They also have some real bargains. I remember when I was a kid, perhaps 40 years ago, when B&M had a store in Cleveleys, I bought my first cordless drill from there! It was a Black & Decker and something ridiculous like a 6V built in battery (it was pretty much useless) 😂
