The $5 Billion Mega Dam Creating Tension on the Nile

  • The world's eyes are on Ethiopia and the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Egypt could lose the water that's the lifeblood of the Nile. Sudan could end up flooded. And China could gain much from Ethiopia's construction loan. Just how big of a wave can a single dam really make?

The river comes from Ethiopia and so it is Ethiopia's right to use its water. Egypt has no place to threaten a sovereign country for using what's in its own territory.
This will be a test of the AU's legitimacy more than anything and will make it obsolete if it does anything other than side with Ethiopia.

Go ahead Ethiopia 🇪🇹. Your people cannot suffer just because someone downstream wants to gatekeep water. My country Kenya 🇰🇪, is one of the leading suppliers of water into Lake Victoria, and thus the Nile, yet we have little or no say on how water is used. However, the filling of the dam should be done reasonably to allow Sudan and Egypt to plan well for a reduced volume during the refill. Provide drinking water to your people, use water for irrigation and supply electricity to your people and neighbours. We are ready to expand our trade with you as you use the Port of Lamu! Peace 🇰🇪💙🇪🇹✌🏿 🕊️

Egypt drill gas and sale to the world, Egypt charges for Suez Canal, Egypt build Dam in river nile, do they actually consult Ethiopia or allow Ethiopia to investigate or share the wealth with Ethiopia..

  • @zelalemtekeletsadik6431

Egypt has 98% of its population with access to drinking water, while in Ethiopia, only 13% of the population has the same access. Additionally, 100% of Egypt's population has access to electricity, compared to only 52% in Ethiopia. If Egypt threatens to use military force rather than share the water from Ethiopia equitably, it is unwise. No Ethiopian will stand by and watch that happen.

Egypt doesn't bring anything to the table when it comes to the Nile river, but still like to act like they own all the water of this river. There are no lakes nor rivers in Egypt that contribute water to the Nile river, so Egyptians should humble themselves and let countries that actually contribute to this river use it to improve their lives.

The absurd thing is Egypt wants Ethiopia to sign a binding agreement that will ensure Egypt gains the same amount of water it has gained since the 1959 colonial agreement was signed between Egypt and Sudan. This means if drought was to happen, Ethiopia will be obliged to give the water that's accumulated in the GERD's reservoir to Egypt so that the amount of water Egypt used to get continues. Indirectly, this means Egypt is forcing Ethiopia to make the dam an insurance for Egyptian security in expense of Ethiopian national interest. Egypt can not coerce Ethiopia into doing that. Hence, it's supporting Eritrea and Somalia to create a proxy war.

Cooperation is recommended for everyone sake, but Egypt is insane for letting their population grow to 100 million plus without securing a better fresh water source or plan B. You can’t completely rely on a river that starts flowing from FAR outside your border and throw a fit when the major source country actually uses the river for their own development. Imagine The U.S threatening to go to war over a river that starts in Brazil and flows north 😂 (silly)

In regard to the Nile waters, talking about the 85% water from Ethiopia's lands and streams, it's under the full rights and obligations of the Ethiopian government to develop any resources of this bilical land in order to light the country and raise its people from poverty. Ethiopians are always ready to talk about WATER SHARE cooperations. However, the Ethiopian people and government are not treasury or banks of any foreign states to sign any binding agreement while developing our hydro dams without harming lower reparian countries. Zero harm but better management of fresh-water resources using the investment of the Ethiopian people. These are facts.

Interesting engineering not correct for saying 4 billion cubic water loss due to evaporation bcs of the dam, Ethiopia actually more green and a source of many rivers that's why Ethiopia called the water tower of Africa for that reason Egypt's dams losses more water than Ethiopia's GERD dam. GERD can hold more water and reduce evaporation bcs it holds the most water that could be lost in the Sahara desert inside Egypt.
