Why imply that this is not also possible and even now a reality in any of the 54 nations of Africa? People continue to characterize much of Africa with corruption. Yet, in spite of that, they are making tremendous progress.

Born and raised in DR Congo, I cannot see this project happening, mostly due to corruption, and lack of suitable infrastructure to support the construction phases alone. I also feel DR Congo is one place where the ecosystem is kept in tact, thankfully due to lack of year-round roads that would provide better access to lumber and other land-clearing resources. We need more untouched forests to absorb our carbon pollution.

Honestly, I dislike “greater good” arguments, but in this case, the potential for that kind of power generation to transform Africa makes it worth it. The earth is massive, and you really can’t balance the welfare of relatively small geographic area against the well-being of billions of Africans. The idea of displacing 30,000 people is distasteful, and I can’t speak to the areas cultural significance, but if their lives could be measurably improved by providing the, a proper townsite and stank infrastructure, then long term it’s potentially worth it. It’s impossible to do anything now a days without stepping on someone’s toes, but bringing Africa out of broad poverty should make sacrifices like this a fair calculation. Though the benefits may only be felt a few generations down the line. Tricky for sure.

If the project engineers and environmentalists can work on diverting less than 10 percent of the main flow for this new project and not causing major disruptions to wildlife then I’ll support it. I don’t particularly like the first wall of diversion to flood the Burundi Valley. Use diversion techniques similar to the Inga 1 & 2. Or renovate them. All in all your graphics and audio and information made it a great presentation 🎉.

$80 billion is a ridiculous price, especially in a country like Congo where labor is dirt cheap. What is that like 1/3rd of their GDP?. Corruption probably ate atleast 70% of that price. India builds massive dams for less than $1 billion.

I see a lot of issues, especially with country wide sharing of energy.
And it is such a tiny amount of energy.
It max sounds like much, but of they would make this electricity available for every citizen I can already see how their use is jumping.
And if you then include that they want to share this energy with severals countries with a population of over 400 million people there is bound to be conflict.
I mean it would be nice if this would go well and they lead by example, but there are just soooo many hurdles to take.
