I love that you posted this video today. My younger brother loved this movie and had the Grinch's mannerism down perfectly. All through this movie, I could hear his voice in the back of my head. He would have been 33 today. It's a perfect way to celebrate him. I love this reaction!
I’m so glad Jim was able to power through being in all those prosthetics because this is one of his best roles. He gave depth to a classic cartoon character and still gave a hilarious performance as well. Acting and comedy at its finest. Not a big Christmas movie fan but this is among the few I can’t help but rewatch every December. My go to movie is usually Elf, and also Rise of the Guardians ( not really a Christmas movie but holiday enough that I still enjoy watching it in December). Mostly though I just watch Christmas specials of all my favorite shows. I’m definitely adding the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas special ti my rewatches every year now.
The glass bottle prop he chewed on was actually a resin based one instead of sugar glass. Scott Prop and Roll made a video about it talking with the prop designer on the film.
Fun fact: knowing the girl who played Cindy Lou, Taylor Momsen, grew up to front The Pretty Reckless is pretty funny considering the whole ‘oh please stop singing’ joke LOL. (Not everyone’s cuppa tea, but they’ve been successful and her matured voice gives me a lil shudder) 😅
Any of you been inside a Hobby Lobby lately? EVERYTHING in there is Grinch this season. So incredibly whimsical and nostalgic. Grinch filled homes galore this Christmas! Haha
Gosh i haven't seen this movie in so long! I forgot how mad it is. I always remember one of my favourite moments is when Martha gets proposed to and you briefly see the Grinch looking at her kind of vulnerable and it's probably the most sort of "human" and natural he gets for the whole movie and it really gets the gut punch!
I love that even in the suit & with the make up they really highlighted Jim’s facial expressions so well like he can just go crazy and it works his body language & acting is always so fun to see. & the production team really did a hell of a job with this adapting it from the animated movie & it took me years to realize the narrator was Anthony Hopkins😂😂 like wtf lol I never read the actors listed. & it’s sad but the kid actor who played the kid version of the Grinch had a deformity that made him look like a child & he was only 17 or 20 when he passed
I always tought one thing...The Grinch only owns things that he can find in the garbage...well...i always tought that Max was a Christmas present for someone and they trew the puppy away
In the scene where Grinch (Jim Carrey) giving Max on acting instructions on how to portray one of Santa's deers, he was imitating Ron Howard, director. Ron Howard, former child actor to Richie Cunningham of TV's Happy Days wear baseball caps when he does his directing.
There is a theory for this version of the movie of Max. The theory goes that Max might have been one the Christmas presents that was abandoned on near the mountain. The Grinch found him and took him in.
This is very much a required movie to watch every year myself. And a lot of the scenes in it are similar or taken from scenes from the animated cartoon. Like it was pointed out, this movie put a lot of heart into it and Jim Carrey was the epitome of Grinch. They also did amazing with Max.
I think it’s only older people like older Gen X and gen boomers who don’t like this film? Or maybe Dr. Seuss fans who dislike this film and prefer the anotes film. My parents and entire family pretty much enjoy this film and so do I. I haven’t met anybody my age who doesn’t like it (I’m on my late 20’s).
@@kay-jay1581 I’m 36, my mom is in her 50’s, we all went to see this the day it came out and it’s still a family fave. We watch and quote it all the time. 😅
I remember when this movie came out, it was A BIG THING that year. This was the first, live-action Dr. Suess movie to such a beloved cartoon classic. The hype was real in 2000. Good marketing and advertising. Christmas blockbuster. 90's Jim Carrey. At his peak. Every family wanted to see this movie. So tickets were sold out two weeks in advance at almost every cinema, but we were pretty lucky and eventually did get to see it in theaters.
There are theories that the Horton hears a who and how the grinch stole Christmas universes are one, and that the grinch was meant to live on the flower spec instead of the snowflake. He looks a lot more like those characters with all their hair, and story starts with how windy and strange the weather was that night. I’ve never been able to look at it the same since 😂
Another underrated classic is Disney’s Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey. He plays Scrooge and many other characters. It’s also the adaptation that is closest to the book. The animation is fantastic for its time. You should add it to your holiday watch list.
Jim Carey as The Grinch is just perfect, love how this movie elevates the source material, cause the original is pretty much like an animated short and it doesnt really hit you too much, but this sticks with you and its super rewatchable :) honestly watching this movie when its snowing outside, covered in blanket, drinking hot chocolate, perfect time, such a cozy experience :D
23:33 My problem with the Whos in this movie is that they all just very soulless and greedy and only care about material stuff (in the book and the original TV special with Boris Karloff, the whos are supposed to be the complete opposite of the grinch, they’re nice, joyful, good hearted, and already know the true meaning of Christmas) I get it that is the point in the movie of them being soulless I get it, but that kind of goes against the point of the book itself. Jim Carrey was supposed to do the table cloth trick wrong, it was meant to go everywhere but he actually did perfectly and they thought it was funnier having him go back and mess it up x
The part where the Grinch pulled the table cloth away without anything falling on the floor was unscripted; that's why Jim Carrey stomped back on camera and pushed everything onto the floor. It's one of my favorite scenes.
The joy of this film is growing up and realizing you fuck heavy with The Grinch 😂 The scene where The Grinch is directing Max, Jim Carrey is doing an impression of their director, Ron Howard 🤣 One of my faves. Watch it every year. Also this came out in 2000 & the animatronic baby Grinch looks amazing! So someone please explain why Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt 2, which came out 12yrs later, couldn't achieve this? 😂
Being animators, if you haven't seen it, please check out the original TV special "How The Grinch Stole Christmas!" from 1966. Based on the Dr. Seuss book. Directed by the legendary Chuck Jones (of Looney Tunes/Bugs Bunny fame - he directed classics like "What's Opera, Doc?" and "One Froggy Evening" and "The Rabbit of Seville" and on and on...) Narrated by Boris Karloff. A classic of animation!
If y'all want another Christmas movie I highly recommend 2009's "a Christmas carol", it's a motion capture animated film produced by Disney staring Jim Carrey in 3 roles that tells the classic story in a bit of a darker way. I really think you would enjoy it.
I love that you guys reacted to this movie! This is my favorite version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I also love that y’all are doing more group reactions, and while this isn’t a Christmas movie I think that y’all should react to the live action version of Cat in the Hat, especially since James said that he hasn’t watched it
Another fantastic reaction! I love the chemistry between the four of you! I have a Christmas movie recommendation: 2015's "Krampus", starring Toni Collette and Adam Scott. It's a horror film, but it's more of a horror-comedy-fantasy film. And it is SO CHRISTMASSY and atmospheric. I feel like it often gets overlooked this time of year because of its "horror" label, but it has so much more heart and feeling than a lot of modern Christmas films. It easily makes my top 10. I think you guys would love it. Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see what else y'all will do!
My favorite christmas movie is We're No Angels starring Humfrey Bogart. It's this really sweet tongue in cheek film about a trio of prisoners who break out of jail and act as christmas angels to the family they are crashing with until they can skip town. Jim Carrey is a legend and this film is amaze
At the beginning when the streets were crazy for Christmas shopping they actually hired professional circus performers for the unicycle and bizarre instruments (to make it look cool but also because they were performers they were less likly to hurt themselves or others in the chaos)
I don't know if you caught this but the party that was going on when the Grinch descended in his little like cradle or whatever, was a swingers party, little bit of adult humour just sprinkled in subliminally :)
This movie and the, original, Santa Clause, are my Christmas go-to movies. The set design for this movie was unbelievable. It, faithfully, replicated the Dr. Seuss style so well, that you could take a still frame of the town and knowing nothing else, know this was a Dr. Seuss story. You mentioned that they went full in on the characters, and that is why this movie worked so well. If the actors didn't immerse themselves in the, intrinsic, silliness of their roles it would just fail. This isn't a movie where anyone can phone in their performance. It is one of the, very, few times where I believe a live action reimagining ended up better than the original. Honestly, one of Jim Carey's best works.
I remember when this came out. I was so sick after Thanksgiving, and when I got well, my parents took me to see this, and I laughed soooo hard! It's definitely my favorite Christmas movie
Thanks so much for reacting to this it's one of my favorite childhood Christmas movies. I don't care how many people say it's terrible. While they do have good points it will always have a special place in my heart
This was a great reaction, you guys! One thing I loved that they changed from the book/animation is that the Whos started out very materialistic. That way there's actual growth by the end.
Ask me if I can quote the mixing up the mail scene. I can. I do it a lot, actually. 🤣 Me and my bunch actually quote this movie a lot - the “WE’RE GONNA DIIIIIE! I’M GOING TO THROW UP - AND THEN WE’RE GONNA DIIIIIIIE!” is another frequently quoted line.
19:47 was an accident, he was supposed to pull the table clothe and have everything fall down then, but it didnt so he ran back and tossed everything. Directors found it so funny they kept it. Edit: sorry i just saw others talk about it but it really is too funny not to share
Fun fact: there is a long-lost 4-hour cut of this movie buried in the vaults of Universal Pictures. There is an active petition to release the full cut. The closest experience to said cut is the extended TV edit, which does add an extra 15-20 minutes, running at 2 hours and 5 minutes. Regardless if it is the original 105 minute theatrical release from 2000, 125 minute TV cut that first aired in 2002, or the aforementioned long-lost 240 minute cut, they all received the same rating: "PG" for Some Crude Humor.
Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, helped James Horner write "Where Are You Christmas" and recorded the demo for it, but her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, blocked Carey's release of the song due to their ongoing legal battle. The song went to Faith Hill instead.
Jim almost quit on the first day because of how long he was in the make up chair, he couldn’t face going through it for weeks on end. The actor who plays the mayor’s assistant is Ron Howard’s brother. When he was directing max he was making fun of Ron Howard who is known for wearing a baseball cap.
He didn’t almost quit because of how long he was in the make up chair, he almost quit because of how torturous it was getting into the make up and costume
A few fun facts about this film: In the scene where The Grinch pulls the sheet off the table then afterwards knocks everything on the floor was an unscripted moment from Jim. He was supposed to pull the sheet off the table, and everything was supposed to fly all over the place, but he accidentally did it successfully so he improvised afterwards. While filming Jim has said he was highly allergic to the paints they used in his costume and he said he was miserable filming the entire time. Finally the scene at 26:32 where he is pretending to direct Max like a movie director he was actually doing a mock play of Ron Howard the director of this film who always wears a hat while directing.

19:41 Fun fact: The part where the grinch takes the cloth off the table it was supposed to knock all the silverware and plates off of it but instead All of it was still on the table so Jim Carrey improvised and went back and knocked all the stuff on the floor which I heard made the director of the movie laugh hysterically it wasn't a plan stunt but it worked You got to love Jim Carrey hes a master of Just look what he did in the mask he wasn't supposed to move his lips Because the prospectics he was wearing was too rough on his face so he practiced moving his lips wearing the mask guitar time even though it was uncomfortable he made it work.
"GRINCH?!?"
"Whaddya want? I mean...GRINCH?!? OH NO!!"
I love that you posted this video today. My younger brother loved this movie and had the Grinch's mannerism down perfectly. All through this movie, I could hear his voice in the back of my head. He would have been 33 today. It's a perfect way to celebrate him. I love this reaction!
My man grinch took a bite of an onion like it was an apple! Yoooo! Super beyond villain moment there. Lol
Oh yeah, they played in the UK once, me andvmy friends went and everyone sang 'where are you Christmas' until she got so mad she left. It was great.
You’ve made me want a Pretty Reckless cover of where are you Christmas now 😆
Singers gotta start somewhere.
@FunGamingAnticsWow, that's crazy.. not the Mason thing though, he'd totally do that. Love his music, don't love him.
@@tarotdiscombe5573 what did she get so mad about?
26:32
Fun fact: Jim Carey is actually impersonating the director of the film, Ron Howard, who was dying during this bit :P
Any of you been inside a Hobby Lobby lately? EVERYTHING in there is Grinch this season. So incredibly whimsical and nostalgic. Grinch filled homes galore this Christmas! Haha
DUDE....I LOVE HOBBY LOBBY. That is my "Happiest Place on Earth"
@@whitenoisereacts omg same! 😂 I’ve always called Hobby Lobby my “happy place”.
Hobby lobby?
@@brianamills6440 and @whitenoisereacts I love shopping there! I'm getting ready to make my wedding dress soon.
Hobby lobby is a craft store that also sells home decorations. Idk how wide spread they are though.@@Eric-W28
I am loving the group reactions. Feels just like watching a movie with friends.
“man’s Potpourri 😠”- Grinch
“Woofwoof? 🤨”- Max
“I don’t know, it’s some kind of soup 😒” - Grinch
The part is legend, it’s so funny!
Watch this every Christmas Eve, right after home alone. Such a classic... Jim Carrey is perfect for this role 😂
This is very much a required movie to watch every year myself. And a lot of the scenes in it are similar or taken from scenes from the animated cartoon. Like it was pointed out, this movie put a lot of heart into it and Jim Carrey was the epitome of Grinch. They also did amazing with Max.
It's definitely one of those weird takes that was too strange at a glance for it's time, but glad to see it's become a cult classic in retrospect.
I remember loving it as a kid and being super confused why people didn't
Jim definitely “carrey’d” this movie 🤣 one of my all time favorite xmas movies 🫶🏽🎄
There are theories that the Horton hears a who and how the grinch stole Christmas universes are one, and that the grinch was meant to live on the flower spec instead of the snowflake. He looks a lot more like those characters with all their hair, and story starts with how windy and strange the weather was that night. I’ve never been able to look at it the same since 😂
Nobody but Jim Carrey could have brought the Grinch to life like this. Great choice guys. Love your channel and collaboration with the girls.
23:33 My problem with the Whos in this movie is that they all just very soulless and greedy and only care about material stuff (in the book and the original TV special with Boris Karloff, the whos are supposed to be the complete opposite of the grinch, they’re nice, joyful, good hearted, and already know the true meaning of Christmas)
I get it that is the point in the movie of them being soulless I get it, but that kind of goes against the point of the book itself. The grinch shouldn't have to be the one who spells the message out for them, *he's the one who's supposed to learn the lesson.*
The movie got it so backwards and you honestly side with the grinch in that scene after everything you saw in this film tell me you don't understand why he thinks christmas is so stupid, he's absolutely right.
There are so many jokes in this that are totally for the parents, like the part where there's a swingers party
Fun fact, the little girl that plays Cindy is Jennie from gossip girl. Also the lead singer in the band The Pretty Reckless.
“6:30: dinner with me.. I can’t cancel that again!”
What a mood! Lol
Grinch💚: If I can’t find a reindeer… I’ll make one instead 😈
Maxs🐾🐕: ( wimpers and runs away)
Grinch💚: Oh MaaaaaaaAAAAAAAX!!!
Jim Carrey was supposed to do the table cloth trick wrong, it was meant to go everywhere but he actually did perfectly and they thought it was funnier having him go back and mess it up x
Fun fact! The glass he "ate" was actually breakaway resin glass! He never actually ate it
The part where the Grinch pulled the table cloth away without anything falling on the floor was unscripted; that's why Jim Carrey stomped back on camera and pushed everything onto the floor. It's one of my favorite scenes.
The joy of this film is growing up and realizing you fuck heavy with The Grinch 😂
The scene where The Grinch is directing Max, Jim Carrey is doing an impression of their director, Ron Howard 🤣
One of my faves.
This is the one Christmas movie that I would watch year-round or multiple times a year.
LOVE THIS MOVIE!
My parents and I saw this in theaters and we cracked up laughing!
I love that you guys reacted to this movie! This is my favorite version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I also love that y’all are doing more group reactions, and while this isn’t a Christmas movie I think that y’all should react to the live action version of Cat in the Hat, especially since James said that he hasn’t watched it
Yeah maybe we will!
Yesss, Krampus 👌
My favourite line: "4.00 - wallow in self-pity, 4.30 - stare into the abyss...."
The 2009 "A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey is a great movie.
Fun fact: Taylor momsen is now the lead singer of one of today's best rock bands, The Pretty Reckless. They...well....ROCK🤟
Full, Not So Full, Going Going Gone. LOL 😂😂😂😂 That's why Max is laughing about this silly rhyme and the Grinch frowning for no reason. LOL. 😂😂😂😂
Cindy Lou Who: Santa, what's Christmas really about?
Santa Grinch: VENGEANCE!
Me: I knew it.
This was a great reaction, you guys! One thing I loved that they changed from the book/animation is that the Whos started out very materialistic. That way there's actual growth by the end.
My favorite movie growing up. It doesn’t matter if it’s Christmas or not, I’m ALWAYS watching this movie, Jim Carrey will always be my favorite ❤
i can hear your laughs already, this movie is such a classic. love jim carrey in this, what a legend!
Polar Express definitely needs to be on the list
You all are beautiful and now I'm crying cuz this reminds me of my childhood too a lot kids and people go thro this but ty all 4 of you for this
You guys ought to continue with Jim Carrey and watch ‘The Mask’
One of my all time favorites
He came so close to saying “Losers” like Ace Ventura at 18:52. 😆
LOVE the editing on this one. Perfect to take out some of the extra dialogue and shorten the movie and avoid copyright while still making sense.
