Sometimes when u have a lot wealth, and spend money on extravagate things, u get desensitized to everything around u, and become detached from reality. It's good that you realize that path isn't going to make u fulfilled in life, and that it's better to be grateful for the things that actually matter in life like relationships.

I commend your journey and your self-awareness! I am finding that the more we accumulate wealth, naturally the more access it provides. And it's that very access that some misinterpret as superiority, entitlement and toxic privilege. What I believe is that we are better off when we define our values from early on (authenticity, integrity, humanity etc) that will keep us grounded and anchored to keep making aligned decisions the more our wealth ascends.

Minimalism isn't only about spending less, having less or declutter. And isn't only about material things too.
It's about purpose. The meaning we give to things. To people. To experiences. To environments around us. It's about the way we perceive the world and what we allow to enter our world (physical, mental and emotional).

"we need more creators like you who are honest about minimalism" - No, we don't. Why? Because each to their own. For one person minimalism is one thing, but for the other it is something different, but it doesn't mean one of them is dishonest about it. Each person sees things in their own way and what is true to you may not be true to me (as for example the perspective on minimalism and honesty I am referring to here), so for you to say that "we need more honest creators" isn't accurate either, because you may deem them dishonest, but it doesn't mean they aren't honest about their minimalism.

“Minimalism” isn’t about “stuff” alone. This lifestyle is about the people in our lives and clearing out anyone who is unhealthy to us.
The food you eat and how you prepare it. The books, music and films you “consume”. These things “go into you” and are apart of you.
Consume what has meaning for you 🌼
Consume time with those you love and who love you🌼
    Consume experiences vs things🌼
Consume work that has depth for you🌼
Feeling free from any form of being trapped is minimalism at its best and the antithesis is
feeling trapped by being consumed by everything in your life (stuff/ people/ food/etc).
Living each day for small things that fill you with contentment 🪴is a minimalistic life.

I grew up in a privileged household. We weren't filthy rich or anything. However, we had a very nice house and wooded land on the river, skiing vacations in Colorado, etc. . . and we weren't abused. So it was better than growing up in a VERY wealthy household where there was abuse. I notice my siblings and myself have a tendency to think TOO highly of ourselves. I pray about this on a regular basis, because I want to be humble; because the Bible says that, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14:11

Money is a tool and it's a necessity in our world for sure. Keeping yourself grounded in reality is important, and reminding yourself daily to be grateful for what you have and what you've accomplished is important as well. You sound like an amazing person that would be fun to hang out with. Stay well and definitely use your money to expand your knowledge and see the world. Traveling with just a backpack means you will appeal to people from all walks of life as approachable. You will make lifelong friends from other countries. Congratulations! You're so much smarter than so many of the people you've been with. ❤️

This video got me thinking that aiming for financial freedom cannot just be about having the means to buy whatever you want and do whatever you want, without thinking the impact that can have to you/others/Earth at different levels. Looking through the lenses of minimalism can help filter out and assess how to have a balanced approach to your living standards in a way that best suit you personally.
    Thanks for the video.

Hello Nate, haven't you thought about the fact that a minimalist isn't a monk after all. The minimalist can enjoy life too. Flying private jets and eating lobster in Dubai is ok if you don't pay for it. You could say it's monteverest minimalism. After all, if a minimalist wins a trip, he does not have to give it up just because it is all inclusive in a five-star hotel. As I said, a minimalist is not a monk. If you use common sense, I don't see a contradiction in this.

I believe minimalism isn't so much a lifestyle as an exercise in identifying what is important vs stuff that is a distraction from the important. Therefore you can be a minimalist but still enjoy things that you're into. Maybe once a year or at a routine interval you need to consciously reviewing your choices and direction.

I believe it's about finding a healthy balance between being spiritual and living in this modern day society, there's some things we can't change about how our society has advanced over the years but it's up to us to keep ourselves grounded and connected with ourselves and not lose site of our natural state that's why it's good to be out in nature and enjoying the simple things in life .....there's nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy the finer things/ luxuries in life just keep yourself in check and be humble ... it's all up to the individual but we all need to find time to be more compassionate and to respect one another focus on a persons character and heart not what they have materialisticaly

I love your videos Nate and I love what you've been telling so far, but let me tell you that I don't like the title of this video at all because it reminds of the new trend of content creators about Minimalism who say now that Minimalism doesn't work on its own because they have run out of ideas to continue attracting people talking about that topic. That would be a deep disappointment.
Minimalism still works. Now and ALWAYS, but we must continue to apply this philosophy beyond the fact that Minimalism is no longer a trending topic and not send disappointing messages on the subject. That's what doesn't work.

One of the things that makes me happy is to give to others. I think it’s kind of cringy when I see certain people with wealth beyond belief and they are completely selfish. It’s perfectly fine to spend money on yourself especially if you have earned it. I love nice cars and nice houses. It’s just when I see people on social media bragging about the 100th car they have bought or designer this or that. After a while I think, how empty.

This is what Elon Musk was talking about when he said being rich was not a bad thing but consuming too much is. That’s why shaming people for being rich makes no sense since being rich just means you receive a lot for producing a lot. Producing more than you consume should be the main goal and not living a lavish lifestyle just for the sake of it.

Very interesting video. I’m getting the sense that it’s not so much about minimalism not working, but you having to contend with the fact that spending time with the more affluent members of your network compels you to make choices that contradict the ideals of minimalism (the environmental aspect of it at least).
Maintaining connections with people who value vastly different kind of lifestyle to yours (for economical or ethical reasons) will be a challenge and by default introduce conflict. Also, there’s research on the link between wealth and levels of empathy, which confirms your personal experience of disconnect from the issues an average person faces in life. It’s interesting to know that this disconnect can happen if you previously led modest lifestyle or come from a working class background and rose to financial security later in life. We’re all prone to this I guess.

Nate, you should read Marcus Aurelius - Meditations (you probably already read it) It's interesting because he was the most powerful person on the planet, roman emperor, and all he wanted to do with that power is become wise :)) In a way, you are like that, you have the money you have everything, yet you choose the inner journey (which is the most important one, Rilke says)
you are a wonderful example for the young people who associate happiness with cars etc
Thank you for sharing this with us and may peace follow you on your inner journey. Sorry for my bad english and greetings from Romania!

I absolutely loved this video! I'm glad you got a taste of the "lifestyles of the rich and 'famous'". You were spiritually evolved enough to know when to quit, so to speak. However the experience of this showed you that over indulgence because you can is not fulfilling either, to some of us. But that's the beauty of contrast. It shows you the differences so you can make a better choice. I find myself now being a consumer of consumables (not necessarily expensive ones). When I go out or travel, I will find myself purchasing coffee, tea, candles, incense, body care products--anything that I can consume/use up so I'm not collecting something. At the same time, I'm helping a small business or artisan. That's what I love doing because I do businesses too.

When you are a good person, you are more deserving than other cheaters. Yes, having ego over money or bring wealthy is wrong. Ego is root of all evil. But knowing your value & self worth is important as hell tbh. You should know if you're better than others. Not in a narcissistic way. But in a way that's self reflective. Only if you are a good person thougj

I don't want to judge you because I don't know you. I can only say this in a broad way. Minimalism is not a decoration concept. It is not a consumption perception. It is not a "lifestyle". And much less a catalyst to introduce a new way of thinking or living that does not yet exist within you. In fact, minimalism when gained through experience, emotional maturity, and the occasional loss and failure (hardly experienced in youth) reveals and shapes minimalism at its purest. And then it ends up becoming constant and enduring. Obviously you don't have to "suffer" to understand what minimalism is, but real life is inevitably made up of these experiences. Minimalism is a consequence. The blossoming of an attained reality that manifests naturally wherever you exist. And contrary to what most people think, not just in your apartment. It is a consequence of the lack of control, possession, dominance and so little vanity.

Very well said Nate! What I’ve learned is that a degree of materialism is okay. There are certain items that ground a person and bring personal fulfillment. For example, I have a special necklace and painting from my great grandmother. But yes we need to be aware of our consumption of things that don’t bring personal fulfillment and don’t serve a real purpose. Again, awesome video 💙Look forward to more

I don't understand how minimalism is 'not working'? Seems like it is totally working. It's the conspicuous consumption that was bothering you, not the basics. Private planes and yachts and fancy cars are not minimalism. Please explain what you mean, because your title seems to undermine your valuable example of six years of living out your core belief.
