Not only the engine but now the aero concept is proving to be superior. Everyone copied and went down the Red Bull path of a high rake car while Mercedes kept its level design and now they are all out to lunch and are wondering why.
Since they had the best engine they could go for a better over-all concept, while Red Bull aimed to make up the difference with more radical aero, and now they've created a really unstable car that doesn't seem to have more downforce either. Pretty much everyone tripped over themselves, and the only ones having any progress are Racing Point who were clever enough to not try to be clever at all...
Ian Mrozewski the rake difference goes back to the V8’s. Merc has always had very good mechanical grip which is why they ate tires for so long. Newey is going with aero over mechanical grip and all the other teams followed because it is a Newey design they think will strike gold.
When the #1 driver almost laps everyone except for the 2 other podiums, you know it isn't a competition anymore Let's just hope Liberty keeps their cameras on the interesting midfield battles instead of showing a driver doing laps alone around a track

Finally been saying it for years it's shit to watch and a boring sport! Glad fans have finally started to voice there opinions. 90% of comments on here is about how boring and uncompetitive the sport is. It's supposed to called RACING and I havent seen wheel to wheel battles at the front for years. Yes well done merc. But it's not a sport when Hamilton sits in the cockpit does little steering correction whilst max same lap time is doing 1000 adjustments a lap. Yes well done merc but where's the sport challenge? The car drives itself. Even martin brundle has driven the mercs and he says it virtually drives itself. That's not sport / racing that's just building the best car and winning without much racing?
I do wish Bottas was a little better and more consistent and it could of been a good title fight between the 2 but it looks like he doesn't have it to challenge Lewis's auto-pilot.
It just struck me that Mercedes key senior personnel are really well known to the public, and regularly speak about their area of work with joy and passion, be it in RUclips videos or in skysport pre-race features! From Ferrari side we see just one person: Mattia. Such a difference in culture. Toto Wolf really has this band of geniuses around him + the best driver. Does anyone recall a similar setup not so long ago? Byrne, Brawn, Domenicali, Chris Dyer, Kees van der Grint, Baldesseri, JT, MS.. Seems like post Jean Todt Ferrari went from a racing team back to a political party
I agree about the public outreach. The few times last year that both Ferrari and Renault tried RUclips features, they always struck me as too much corporate-staged P.R., like something you'd see in a TV commercial.

The Ferrari side of the fuel pump is a pathway to many abilities other teams consider to be against the sporting regulations. His car became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was loosing that power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught Mercedes' engine department everything he knew, then Mercedes improved and got Ferrari's engine banned in the off-season. It's ironic, he could give others a win, but not himself.
Yeah and it's not so great for the sport. Now there's gonna be one less world champ on the grid to challenge merc. And replaced by someone no offence sainz who hasn't won a race and leclerc who only has 2 wins. Shocking 🤯 team decisions.

It is not only the engine! - Recognize what Hamilton says about the chassi. The technic is determined by the technicians, and this is the point where the advantage dwells!
Does anyone else remember a couple of years ago when Mercedes announced that they had broken the 50% threshold for efficiency? Their F1 engine actually used more fuel to propel their car than was wasted, through heat primarily. That was an amazing accomplishment for automotive engineering.
yes and they started research for this hibrid era in 2007. no wonder they are ahead, not to mention their ultimatum for this engine type, otherwise they wouldn't join..

This is why Mercedes is the best team. Instead of simply waiting and hoping their competitors get downgraded, they work hard to continue improving their already great car. This way regardless of the decision (if their competitor is legal or not) they will continue ahead of them.
Alex Tapisevic Never said they don’t have a huge budget, just saying that they don’t get complacent, despite already having the best car they continue to push and better themselves. And clearly not every team can do the same given Ferrari’s results.
Yeah... Mercedes has corrupted FIA to the maximum extent. Nobody ever though it's possible to bribe FIA this much, without facing the rage of fans. But somehow, with the help of media, Mercedes got away with their crime for 7 years.
Long story short: working with heads down, minding your own business makes difference. While others try to copy others designs, mercedes innovate and it makes major difference. Others after copying design have not where to go further, but designer of original idea always have ideas how to improve it.

Overrated drivers and bad engineers are all over the grid. FIA should look to make it easier for teams to enter F1 and get rid of dead woods that are killing it.
There's 20 drivers on the grid. They're not all racing for podium. F1 is very competitive in the midfield. But yeah, if you only care about race winners, you'll find this season to be very boring.

Finally people really starting to comment on the subject. The merc drives itself with little correction to a car like red bull for instance. Both teams neck and neck in a qualifying lap whilst ham sits and does little steering movement. And max is doing 1000 adjustments a lap. Lewis has it easy!
The lesson is: never ever lie to a german about an engineering breakthrough you had, the germans will make the lie a truth! I'd love that as well. A lot of modern F1 fandom seem to think Schumacher & Brawn deserved most of the credit, but Ferrari wouldn't have won titles without Todt (top 3 team the 2 years prior: their problem was never pace, it was reliability). Todt brought endurance racing experience & culture to Ferrari ( multiple Le Mans, World Rally Group B, Paris to Dakar wins with Peugeot). Of course Montezemolo deserves credit for hiring & empowering him to get the job done, but Todt was the real architect behind Ferrari's dominance.
i would love to see different engine sizes be allowed so teams could run v6, v8, v10 v12's just hearing all the different engine soudns would be amazing and seeign teh difference in performance too would be intereesting
Its obvious to me that ferrari was allowing the fuel flow to continue after the driver closed thethrottle. Building up additional fuel in the rail that was then injected with the direct injection pump in combination with a longer injector pulse width. Most likely it was some sort of accumulator device, and per the rules, it would of been legal. This is why there was a second fuel flow meter required. FIA wanted to know exactly how much Ferrari was exceeding the mandated fuel flow. This also explains why the agreement was secret. So no one has to answer for the loophole that only Ferrari found.
When Ferrari got a bit quick last year... someone said that there is some "tricks" in that car...now Mercs r a second quicker than everyone else and there is no suspicions/tricks on that🤔
That’s cause Ferrari played outside the rules. You can’t say someone is breaking the rules of you’re doing the same thing but better. The merc is almost the same as last years, they just optimized every part.
Ferrari had suspicious amount of straight line speed advantage. Mercedes doesn't have that much on a straight line, they just have an overall car that is a monster. It's like Ferrari in 2004. Their car was legal, but damn fast. Remember in Monza, Lewis couldn't get close to Ferrari with DRS and slip stream. Now get in Mercedes now, and let Honda follow them with DRS and slip stream, they will catch for sure. Ferraris top speed in monza without DRS was like 365 km/h while Mercedes behind had only like 330 or something. You don't see that big of a gap today, Mercedes is fastest may be on straights, bit the gap is no more than 5-10 km/h
So now you are blaming Ferrari for Mercedes dominance? If Ferrari is doing well, you blame it saying they are doing something cheeky. If they are doing slightly bad to their competitor, you blame Ferrari saying they are not doing enough and now if their competitor dominates for whatever reason, you still blame Ferrari for that too?
I think people forgot that Mercedes brought a redesigned engine last year and I believe it was geared towards reliablity, all of the merc teams last year were not particularly quick in a straight. So thus they've had a year to work on the power. They obviously have a lot more power than last year and Ferrari took a step back this year causing a massive performance gap between the two.
at this point I don't even care about mercedes anymore They are very far ahead and nobody will defeat them except themselves When I watch a race I watch every other team except mercedes, because there's no suspense at all, we already know who's going to win anyway, the suspense is what the podium will look like, not who's the first one
if Hamilton is in front on the next corner i already know who is going to win, so i do the same as you and concentrate on the rest of the field fighting for the podium
Rod Rebman Well in the interviews he has clearly said that he was hoping to be challenged, to keep it exciting for fans. But he’s obviously not gonna slow down on purpose
I hate that the FIA never cleared up what Ferrari were doing, it was probably pretty dodgy though given where they sit right now. The performance difference will only get worse in faster tracks.
One question though is why everybody suspected Ferrari when they showed extra speed and demanded investigations and so (rightfully though), but nobody is raising any questions when a car shows with over a second per lap advantage on all other cars? I wish they would’ve changed the engine specs also for the 2022 rule changes. The current hybrid turbo spec has been dominated by Mercedes since its introduction back in 2014, F1 should’ve changed these for the next car generation to flatten the dominance curve again
Because their gains aren't on the straights. They're killing everyone in the corners. There's nothing in the GPS data traces that show strange behavior from the Mercedes engine. Unlike Ferrari where both Mercedes and Redbull said they were doing things that are not possible under the regulations
I think they couldn’t just change the engine regs that quickly, because the big teams could just spent their way around engine development. Changing the engine on such short notice would result in more Mercedes domination
RD 12 then let’s hope the new regulations of the body design will be enough to mix it up again. I admire Mercedes and what have they done, and I know it’s up to the rest of the field to close the gap, but at the same time it’s getting boring
Don't know whether FIA is hand in glove with Mercedes. Ferrari twerks it's engine, starts getting podium positions, looks like Mercedes has an issue, FIA 'rule makers' request all details from Ferrari come to conclusion to stop. But how can Mercedes say, ' Oh we worked to burnout using Ferrari engine design tactics to our advantage', seem to be lapping much faster this season, while FIA 'rule makers' happily sleeping because Status quo is restored. Takes me back to Ferrari dominance was stopped due to Maclaren stealing vital information and docs to Ferrari and yet FIA punishment was not too severe. FIA here to promote British affiliations.
i am not sure mercedes engine improved so much, but quite sure the ferrari engine went down. The secret agreement they reached showed that they were clearly illegal last year
Possibly, but judging but the massive leap in performance from both williams and tracing point, I'd wager it's true. Williams has much better quali pace than race pace. Same with tracing point.
Well, Ferrari may be having their troubles on and off-track this season, and Red Bull too, to a lesser degree at least, but you can only beat what's in front of you. Kudos to Mercedes - I never thought they could improve this much on the PU side particularly, as the law of diminishing returns always hits the ones at the top end the most, but they have come back with an answer comprehensively. It's not their fault that the others have run into troubles one way or another this year.

Never have seasons been so long, cars used to sound better, cars used to look better, tracks used to have more variation. IceBloodKing “hurting the sport” is an interesting term... should Mercedes be punished for doing things right while the other teams flounder and are rewarded for dropping the ball? The obvious answer is no. Mercedes currently have the edge over the other teams, but no dominance lasts forever. Very simply put, enjoy the dominance and amazing engineering brought to F1 right now while it lasts. Teams fall off, people innovate. Just because Mercedes are so good right now doesn’t mean they always will be. And anyways... Ferrari used to dominate, Williams used to dominate, etc. The same things are said over and over again by people who are supporting teams who aren’t doing as well as the #1. It’s an endless cycle
I'm completely illiterate when it comes to car mechanics, but I wish F1 was more transparent over WHY Mercs and a lot of other teams past innovations are acceptable but whatever magic Ferrari were performing wasn't, since they seem to have needed to re-write some rules to make it properly illegal. Whatever Ferrari were doing was the first time in a long time that Merc have looked like they might have had some competition.
It's actually quite transparent. It's just they can't give too many details of the teams. There are some secret technologies that every team uses that can't be disclosed. FIA just have to make sure everything is legal. Im sure they know how Mercedes keeps dominating the field, they just can't disclose the details of their car that keeps them so quick. Im fine with that as long as Mercedes has a legal car.
No, they didn't have to rewrite any rules (at least I'm not aware of any change in the regulations regarding fuel this year). What they changed is the way how they measure that the engine is within regulations. It's a little like the diesel emission scandal: they tricked the measurement, not found a loophole in the regulations.
They didn't rewrite the rules, they clarified the rules already in place. Ferrari obviously thought they had a loophole but the clarification showed them in no uncertain terms their car was illegal so they had to change it. Innovation in F1 is about exploring the grey areas and loopholes in regulations. if it isn;t specifically banned, then it;s technically legal. Like DAS. It has been deemed legal within the regulations for this year so they rewrite the regulaitons to make sure it isn't legal next year,
No rules were re-written for Ferrari's engine. Teams very often send requests to the FIA, asking "would this be legal"? And the FIA answers. Merc did last year with DAS, and the FIA said yes. Incidentally, in this case they are re-writing the rules to make DAS illegal for next year. Ferrari never asked the FIA if their fuel flow system was legal. Red Bull, suspecting what Ferrari were doing, sent their own request to the FIA asking if they could use a fuel flow system similar to what they suspected Ferrari were doing. The FIA came back and said no, that's illegal. Ferrari knew what was coming next, their engine would be protested. Then FIA and Ferrari did some shady shit behind closed doors, they reached a "settlement" that no one knows about except Ferrari and the FIA. And obviously, the Ferrari engine is shit now. It's a tricky one, because the FIA can't go around telling the other teams all about the inner workings of Ferrari's engine. The thing that I, and the other teams, find infuriating about it though, is that Ferrari have been denying that they had to change their engine. However it's blatantly obvious that the engine has lost a lot of power. Why are they denying it? It's suspicious.
Mercedes has been perfecting their concepts since 2017. Their outfit is very stable. Ferrari has been chasing and trying to cut corners to get to the Mercedes performance faster, also is changing heads from season to season, creating the usual feeling of fear of failure. No wonder one is even more dominant then last year and the other is struggling to get to Q3. Ferrari needs to understand that have to restructure for the long term (basically pick the best for the jobs and then let them do it, without pressure or politics) plus they must give time for things to happen, but all I see is every year putting pressure asking for immediate results. Plus, they have to stop picking the best Italian for the top roles and instead pick the best they have for the role. What i see right now is a Ferrari that wants Italians on the leading roles, the whole "the most Italian Ferrari ever bla bla bla", every team I see this happening failed miserably. And when did Ferrari became dominant? When they had a Frenchman (Todt), an Englishman (Brawn), an Irish (Rory Byrne), around a German (Schumacher). Which when they failed they would protect each other in order to avoid changing any of them and have to start over with a new person. this created stability and confidence they could their job and well. Also made them have room to fail, which made them go further, instead of playing it safe. The results showed up some years later with great effect.
And they had Mr. Luca di Montezemolo looking for a good team. His own diagnosis, a few days ago, is remarkably similar to yours. I agree, Ferrari does not look to be a team since 2005+.

Ferrari dominates the grid...................Mercedes and Red Bull staff: "They are full of tricks...their fuel smells funny...FIA should check them". Mercedes gives more than 1 second to the grid on qualifying, and shows blue smoke.................Red Bull staff and FIA: "Ok...Seems legal to me".
The blue smoke is genuinely just because of it often being overfilled with oil. Mercedes don't need to break the rules either because they've just got fantastic people.
Any team can lodge a complaint at any time, or if they wish not to, they can go to the FIA and ask for a rule clarification around blue smoke (or whatever).
Ferrari was winning the 2018 F1WC until FIAT CEO Sergio Marchionne passed away. Engine has always been a stronghold of Ferrari and one key contributing component to the team wins, even when not credited as the most powerful because engineers chose to privilege reliability and weight distribution, while Illmor Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas powered cars ended many of their races good for roasting sausages by the side of the track.
I feel like i have to be a mercedes fan. Not just because anything is hopeless, but also because that team is so perfect in every single aspect, they deserve nothing less than complete domination and breaking records.
So Mercedes who have had a significant "legal" power advantage over the entire field for 7 years have somehow found another extra 30ish horsepower 100% within the legalities of rule book. Strange not one other brilliant mind from Honda, Renault, or Ferrari has come close to the Mercedes power unit.
I've said this before, I'll say it again: I don't get why the rest of the teams agreed to the freeze in development. They handed Merc two driver and two constructors titles. How can they not have realized this ...
they would've probably gone bankrupt due to the pandemic if they had to constantly upgrade to power unit to prevent themselves from being lapped 5 times every race At least all the small teams on the grid.
Hamilton's driving is so smooth around the last race compared to others fighting the wheel for better control. Merc has got the suspension and aero right to fit Hamilton's style. It has improved more than their engine IMHO. Their engine was always been best out of the others.

Ferrari exploited a loop hole. It was pretty obvious from the beginning of testing in 2019 that something fishy was going on at Ferrari. Huge amounts of smoke would come out of the Ferrari garage when they started the engines, that's not normal. They were burning oil on top of the fuel they are allowed to burn and that was giving them the massive speed boost when they needed it.
John Bennyhoff - Ferrari should have been working to develop big improvements to their engine performance instead of focusing on shifty evasions of the regulations that define the sport.

Because of Ferrari there paying the strictest rules and extra attention to what's burning in a engine with new fuel flow sensors
There’s definitely something with the Mercades car
So now you are blaming Ferrari for Mercedes dominance? If Ferrari is doing well, you blame it saying they are doing something cheeky. If they are doing slightly bad to their competitor, you blame Ferrari saying they are not doing enough and now if their competitor dominates for whatever reason, you still blame Ferrari for that too?
“Not only has Ferrari made themselves weaker, they have also made their fiercest competitor even stronger” How has Ferrari made Haas even stronger?
I think people forgot that Mercedes brought a redesigned engine last year and I believe it was geared towards reliablity, all of the merc teams last year were not particularly quick in a straight. So thus they've had a year to work on the power. They obviously have a lot more power than last year and Ferrari took a step back this year causing a massive performance gap between the two.
at this point I don't even care about mercedes anymore
They are very far ahead and nobody will defeat them except themselves
When I watch a race I watch every other team except mercedes, because there's no suspense at all, we already know who's going to win anyway, the suspense is what the podium will look like, not who's the first one
if Hamilton is in front on the next corner i already know who is going to win, so i do the same as you and concentrate on the rest of the field fighting for the podium
Me too.. I just pretend that Mercedes is doesn't exist. Just enjoy the race behind the merc.
@@augustooliveira5588 It's been like that for a while. If Hamilton leads after the first corner, he will win.
@Patrick Quinn - That pretense is the only thing that keeps them alive.
Ferrari be like "Pfft, prize money. Bitches we get paid for existing"
Ouch, it doesn’t rain it pours for Ferrari. Except for in Hungary when everyone said it was going to rain again and it didn’t 😂

Rod Rebman Well in the interviews he has clearly said that he was hoping to be challenged, to keep it exciting for fans. But he’s obviously not gonna slow down on purpose

- Mattia Binotto on Mercedes' engine advancements
One always looks better if one can wax poetic about one's failures.
Shadowboost fair enough
Omar Kishli if it solves the dirty air problem then we’ll at least get good racing, even if a team dominates
As much as I love F1 this Merc dominance for the last 7 years is destroying my love for the sport. I’m sorry but watching Hamilton or Mercedes win every race isn’t a sport anymore
Exactly the same as you, have barely missed a single race since 2013 but for the first time I am turning races off half way through
F1 should vote Hamilton out and the field will seem abit more leveled
@Patrick Quinn Doesn't work like that champ, if genuine fans are losing interest, that means less viewership, less race attendances, lower tv subscriptions, it's all $$$$
Patrick Quinn I’m a Mercedes fan, but I’m not going to spend another $1200 on a grandstand ticket to watch Mercedes win by 60 seconds for a 7th year in a row,
@Patrick Quinn Wouldn't change a thing, it'd be the same with Bottas or Russel or whoever.
Weather DAS is legal or not, from the Engineering stand point, Merc is just better and more determined than anyone else. They responded to the challenge that Ferrari raised last year. I want to see everyone else respond to this new DAS that Mercedes has and see what they come up with. F1 isn’t just a competition for driver skills but also, majority part of it, an Engineering competition, which is why I love it. U want to see pure driver skills, watch Karting or F2/3
Team doing well
Other teams: wait thats illegal
The sport is defined by the rigid regulations to which all competitors must adhere - ergo - Formula 1. If one team gains an unfair advantage by running askance of the regs, it would be unsporting and fraudulent for the other teams to not call it out.
incredible that ferraris quali time at the hungaroring this yr was faster than last yrs, but mercs has jumpe a second ahead even, just incredible really
Ferrari is a joke, I have zero confidence they will ever catch merc.

Gonna be a loooooong 2 seasons before there is even the slightest chance of someone competing with Merc...💤💤
@Patrick Quinn every team that isn't Mercedes or Racing Point.
@Patrick Quinn obviously a merc fan boy ay???? Where's the sport? Wheres the racing? I'm a fan of the sport and that means I'm interested in every team and open fight and not sucking mercs dick every season. Liberty and fia will be screwed when Lewis retires anyway and take his 20million plus fans with him. Then we'll be left max and rookies to repeat the cycle.
Incorrect.
Don’t forget, that they can also use the horsepower advantage to get extra downforce, especially on slow tracks. They can just set the wings higher, and even the lower top speed is just as fast as other cars.
Imagine if Mercedes continues its dominance beyond 2021. F1 would become a snoozefest and lose even more fans.
There's 20 drivers on the grid. They're not all racing for podium. F1 is very competitive in the midfield. But yeah, if you only care about race winners, you'll find this season to be very boring.
@@ShazenVideos F1 is about winning, not fighting for midfield. I, for one, would like my favorite driver or team to win races and championships. If they continue to lose races for, say 7-10 years, it would wear me out at some point.

@@ShazenVideos there's a lot of rookie drivers in that 20 and drivers without race wins or podiums.... Only midfield / backboys I'm interested in is Russell, norris, sainz, riccardio, perez. Stroll is OK. Rest of the grid no personalities, inconsistent or arrogant or in it for a hobbie / paycheck.
@@HarshitMathur1994 Well, maybe you chose the wrong sport. Look at the history of F1, there has always been a team dominating and others fighting for midfield points. I am sorry to tell you that it will stay that way. F1 is not about winning the race as whole, F1 is about winning against your rivals.
I really think Mercedes beat Ferrari at their own game. Ferrari thought they could takover the v6 turbo hybrid era but Mercedes put their heads down and did whatever it takes to win fair and square.
It's sucks for F1 fans but the Mercedes is just a beast. 1 second faster in qualifying... that's ridiculous. You can't close that gap in 1 season. All other teams should just switch resources to 2022 regulations and let Mercedes have this season and next.
As strange as it sounds, that may be the absolute best chance anyone else has- just hope the regulation changes stir the pot enough to make things even again.
I agree, although don't think it will help, since Mercedes can do the same, if not pulling out, such is their advantage.
That's why I was REALLY wanting to see the new cars, NEXT year... so that everyone would be able to see who does what with the new reg's and finally STFU and just watch. In reference to this generation of F1 fans (they seem to not know the history of F1, based on their comments)... IJS
@@BigMic69 When you say history of F1, assume you're talking about other teams having periods of dominance? Such as - since 1988 - McLaren Honda, Williams Renault, Ferrari, Red Bull etc. My problem with that argument, and maybe others, is that never has a team been as dominant for so long, never has money influenced team potential so much - discounting Ferrari (last time a true outsider came close to championship might have been 99, with Jordan?) Never have seasons been so long, cars used to sound better, cars used to look better, tracks used to have more variation. Season performance wasn't so telegraphed, yet we know Mercedes are going to crush it this year and next. Racing was closer, engineers pit wall advice much less. My feeling is that lots of little things, combined with unprecedented Mercedes domination, have made things much less bearable than previously for most people. Added for this season is a political element that people might, or might not, want.

I still don't understand why do people get angry at ferrari's engine change back in 2019, I mean no one questions the legality of Mercedes in any way shape or form, or is it just me?
Ferraris engine was clearly illegal, otherwise it wouldn't have suddenly got slower once the ules were clarified to show what was clearly not allowed. If anyone (including) Ferrari thought Merc engine was illegal they would protest
Mercedes dominance is hurting the sport
@@AuthenticWaves the biggest change Ferrari needs tbh is a whole restructuring of their management and removing Italian dominance on the top.

Mercedes gives more than 1 second to the grid on qualifying, and shows blue smoke.................Red Bull staff and FIA: "Ok...Seems legal to me".
I mean find a problem with it...Mercedes doesn’t break the rules because it doesn’t have the FIA in its back pocket
The blue smoke is genuinely just because of it often being overfilled with oil. Mercedes don't need to break the rules either because they've just got fantastic people.
because its legal. you ferrari fan boys. ferrari is fast as heck last year, and why they didnt win?
Any team can lodge a complaint at any time, or if they wish not to, they can go to the FIA and ask for a rule clarification around blue smoke (or whatever).
Ferrari was winning the 2018 F1WC until FIAT CEO Sergio Marchionne passed away. Engine has always been a stronghold of Ferrari and one key contributing component to the team wins, even when not credited as the most powerful because engineers chose to privilege reliability and weight distribution, while Illmor Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas powered cars ended many of their races good for roasting sausages by the side of the track.

I read comment somewhere, ' Ferrari is legend killer' i don't know how true it is but it sure defines their season
But it's not just the cars. It takes the drivers to know what to do with the rides and Team.
