      No. Enstone was degrated after Genii didn't invest in the infrastructure at all. They basically bought back the same means they sold to Genii but with 200 people less and 6 years old while stuff like CFD licenses weren't even renewed and the windtunnel got outdated to the extent that it was cheaper to basically rebuild it. It took time to rebuild the infrastructure (hundreds of people, new windtunnel, technical means (the latter was probably the easiest).
      Internally, Renault struggled with the engine, because after the engine freeze, Briatore cut away a huge part of the development infrastructure. They had to rebuild that and for too long had to rely on the standard Magnetti Marelli version. Apparently they even brought in people from Nissan to get the development going.

    That 5 year plan wasn’t so much a failure as it was just over ambitious. They learned a lot over those 5 years, and if they can keep the momentum, Alpine/Renault could be a formidable force especially in the upcoming era. They haven’t done THAT badly this year, given that they have 114 points to McLaren’s 116 and RP’s 120. They are well within striking distance of them. Great detailed insights well done THE RACE team ! if i can add to your analytics, you may just have missed a key one : The whole trouble for Renault actually started with good old Flavio Briatore selling the whole bunch of Renault infras (wing tunnel, all aero facilities) 2012 if i am not wrong - just right before they have chosen to come back for good, and of course before the 2014 new aero sensitive package. Got that from a Cyril Abiteboul insider interview in 2019 plus Martin Brundle. So they play litterally catch up, a conscious one to "REBUILD" development capacity & capabilities with high investment since 2016. Long road and the keyword is, how to catch up before 2022. They already caught up very well. One has to appreciate the methodic and discipline of Cyril Abiteboul, who says what he does and does what he says, since 2016.

    Running an F1 team is like throwing money into a bottomless pit, anyone crazy enough to finance an F1 team must realise that bringing a team up to a race winning outfit, let alone a championship winning team, isn’t a sprint race, it’s a marathon race and no amount of money can change that, even the best drivers in F1 can’t make a poor car into a winning car. The cap on budgets that has/is been brought in should, in theory, narrow the gap between the biggest budget teams and the working on a shoestring budget ones, let’s, or at least in my opinion, hope that it does.
    Thanks for another great episode, very interesting and informative. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Getting that car to work on all circuits ahead of the 2021 season will put them in a good place to go forward. At this point its all about maximizing that car's performance through each successive upgrade package. No longer do they need to worry about equalization, now they just need to build.

    Ricciardo played a HUGE role in how well they're doing, both from the cockpit and in his understanding of what the car is and is not doing, what it has and has not, in development.
    IF Alonso can continue with that, and IF the key players all set in place now stay, and of course, IF there is not interference from further up... Renault is partially owned by the Government of France, and that always means there's potential for powerful controlling interests to intercede and move things in another direction... either directly by stating they'd like Renault... and thus it's racing programes... to do X... or indirectly by changes in policy which State owned companies must align with.... well so long as the first two happen, and the latter does not, I feel Renault are well placed to continue their momentum.
    That said.... Zak Brown has shown he is capable to deliver on dragging McLaren out of the doldrums, they've made some key personnel signings in the last few seasons, including just earlier this year, and it seems to be paying off, and now they're getting Mercedes Benz engines for next season. Oh and of course they have signed Ricciardo.. one of the best, without question, on the grid, easily as good as Vettel, Verstappen, or even Hamilton on his day.
    THAT is a GARGANTUAN thorn that might get thrust in Renaults side right there.
    More, Lawrence Stroll is the kind of hero F1 needs. The guy has come in, with all he's earned in his career, and is dedicating himself to his passion now. Long before Lance was born, before he was a billionaire, before the F1 world knew him, he was a fanatic gear nut, a rev-head to his soul. I thought this was a rich guy buying baby boy a seat in to indulge his dreams, maybe live a little vicariously, when he first entered the scene, but I was wrong.
    The guy not only bought a team, he bought a MARQUE! He bought Aston Martin! He seems committed... he looks like he has a plan... and he never made his money by luck, so most of all it seems he's a guy who knows what he is doing. Already, we can SEE this at RP, and more, it has given his boy confidence, and passion, now he's found his equilibrium and we are seeing the results. Lance has done so well, he's been excellent. Now did they make a mistake letting Checo go? Maybe... but they're also signing Vettel... and mark my words, a sympathetic car he gets the feeling with, he can use, and happy Vettel out of the headspace he's in now... well that Vettel is still world class, still WDC material.
    Aston also get their Merc engines, they now have the personnel, they know how to make a car, and know how to run a team, and Lawrence Stroll seems to be anchor that can generate everything they need to continue THEIR push, and I would not be surprised if at all they do. If the Aston Martin's works team return to F1, is brilliant, and they actually manage to be four or five, and threaten the top three, in season one, and undo that black cloud of failure and humiliation that was their first entry in to the sport almost 60 years ago.
    Again, that is also a MASSIVE thorn in the side of Renault, potentially.
    Add to that, that the state of affairs at Ferrari is bad... BUT IS improving.... Le Clerc's races have shown me this is true.... even if slowly. However... they do not need to improve to perfection or fast... they just need to get even half what they lost back, and they're back top 3, or at least fighting for it with Aston Martin and McLaren..... Sainz is no #2 driver, and whilst that means there might be some headaches at the team next season.. it also means that he with Le Clerc, and an even 50% improved Ferrari are also going to be capable of being there.
    Renaults side could be mortally pieced by these massive thorns by now, because that's a third....
    ...and it might well be that that IS what happens... their progress and plans are killed... or at least maimed.... by the thorns flung in to them by an in form Aston Martin, and a resurgent Ferrari, and WC contending McLaren.
    Though hopefully the stars align to keep them in the fight.

They genuinely expected consistent 4th places and potentially podiums. Year 2 was suppose to be consistent podiums. Year 3 was suppose to be consistent wins and potentially a title challenge and year 4 & 5 was supposed to be a serious title challenge or defence. Oh how I laughed

  • @CGIPadawan
    @CGIPadawan 3 года назад

    You are a bit incorrect in how you count Renaults "5 year" time projection. 2016 to 2020 is only four years. 2021 is actually year No. 5 (ie: 2016 - 2017, 2017 - 2018, 2018 - 2019, 2019 - 2020 = 4 years on count only).

  • @seven4221
    @seven4221 3 года назад

    I dont think Renault have made any improvements in terms of their car before 2020.
    2016 wasn't their chassis, it was basically the 2015 Lotus, so that doesn't count.
    The improvement from 2017 to 2018 was just because they got rid of Jolyoff Palmer.
    When they made a "step back" in 2019, that was just because McLaren were having a great year.
    At the start of 2020 it was the same story, their car was just as good as before, but Racing Point were now stronger as well.
    To me it seems that the Renault car has always been consistently decent over the years, but the outside factors make it look like an "upwards trajectory" or a "step back".
    Only this year i can finally see some genuine progress.

Had they done so they might've had faster development over those first few years and maybe been able to avoid the calamity of 2019. While 2020 is definitely turning around for them I'm still yet to be convinced by their commitment, unlike McLaren who have made fantastic strides over the last couple years having finally figured out their internal problems and I predict will make another jump up next year. With both teams now having proven race winners for next year it'll be a good battle I think if Renault don't balls it up.

Let's not forget that if it wasn't for Bottas' retirement (and Albon massively underperforming) there would be no podium for Renault. Their pace is still not up to Mercedes' and Red Bull's. The car has yet to break through the top 3 due to raw performance. So I think they have at least 2-3 years ahead of them before they can compete for wins.

    In all sport improvement is easy when you're at the bottom. Just pluck the low hanging fruit, but as the gap closes towards the front runners every gain is harder and harder to achieve. Especially when the front runners themselves are improving. In essence you have to improve more than them. So unless they get really lucky in 2022 it's going to be very hard. The budget cap and the new regulations may make it easier.
