You bought this ages ago, I think. I may be misremembering, but didn't you build or review this on camera, already?
Epic review
The prison door frame was originally for Fabuland only.
Woohoo! Thanks for another great review.
It is physically impossible for Jang to make a mediocre review
Thank you brothers
Thank you.
This was one of the last Lego sets I got before I stopped collecting as a teenager. It was for Christmas I was 12 and my mom got me this, the Barracuda, the Imperial Clipper and the Pirates hideout Island. Only looking back now and realise she must have spent a small fortune getting all those sets.
I always wanted the Barracuda as a kid, but it was too expensive. I did get it later though: a dream come true. I did have the Imperial Clipper and Pirates hideout island too. Those were wonderful sets too, I played a lot with them.
All four for single christmas? :O
Same here. My brother and I got the entire initial run of the pirate theme. Soon afterwards I was heading into middle school and lost interest in Lego until many years later. Missed out on the western theme unfortunately.
I only had the toys r us maybe Sears Xmas catalog to circle and dream of these sets...trying to purchase this set as an adult
Crazy to think that we're getting a remake of this now.
When LEGO understood that having lots of figs meant you could ply with a friend(each controlling a small army)
One person would only get two pirates here so I don't think that really applies here.
@Darth sidious yeah we got that
@@claires1063 He's right, though. Let's be fair
Right? The 3-in-1 Medieval Castle is a good example of this. A $100 set, but only two knight figures, 1 villager, and a dragon. Should have had a couple more knights, or maybe a 2nd dragon.
They still understand that, that's why they charge more money than ever for the privilege
I miss those 3D baseplates. They were a cool foundation to build on, although I was only ever able to get one of them myself, I remember I got pretty creative with it with just what I could build as a kid. Ah... good times.
YES, I love them too! This one shape came with about 5 different prints! I also liked the big 3D baseplates with a river printed down the middle... and they can hold water!
Yes! I wasn’t that great at building my own stuff but this baseplate somehow made it easier for me to imagine what to build on top and it’s what I used most of the time when I built from my own head as a kid. For me this baseplate was magical.
Retro reviews are always weird for me because I see pieces I'm really familiar with from back in the day, only to suddenly realize "hey, I haven't seen one of those in a new set in years."
having been born in 03 and growing up in the early 2000s, it's always really weird seeing pieces i had as a kid being used so early on, i never realized that the musket and sabre pieces i had as a kid from lego star wars or pirates were so old
Yes, for a very, very long time. I don't think there were pirate or French navy based sets for at least 10 years. Maybe even longer.
The Architecture is soo good! Wish LEGO would make more Sets like this
Totally agreed, this set looks so amazing.
How did you get a top comment? Fun fact the prison door frame was originally for Fabuland only.
@@legobrickabrac wow! Nice to see you here
Sa arrive le 4 juillet 2023 coming soon
Hi Jang, I checked the cannon. The one you have isthe bb0039. This type of cannon is the disabled version of the shooting cannon, special made for the North American market. The original cannon belonging to this is x110c01. Don't see them being sold in the USA on bricklink though.
The part that springs back is grey on mine so it should be easy to tell them apart.
Interesting!
I believe the cannons in this version was a temporary substitute without a spring till the non-functional cannons with the two spear insignia was made for the US market.
Holy bricks, Jang. You posted this right in the middle of me building my 'Pirates of barracuda bay' set! I think stuff like this is just meant to be.
The prison door is originally a fabuland piece, there was a normal house door that fits that frame as well.
This was the only set from this wave that I didn't have as a kid...
Memories of dreams of this set still haunt me.
"I've been looking forward to this."
Such a lovely, classic set. That little crane feature is pretty smart. BTW I cannot unsee the large jail door as being a Fabuland piece.
Shame that nowadays pirates doesn't seem to interest the general audience as much, judging by the flop of the 2016 wave.
Well, lego did make a Pirate Island hotel in Legoland, approved the amazing Barracuda Bay, and made the creator set. But even then, all of that stuff it’s just one and done, and the hotel is likely there for the hotel experience, rather than pirate sets experience.
There is demand for pirates, especially by Afols. Lego needs to give us a supply
That 2016 pirates flop was because that wave was too childish. First wave, 1989, was more realistic
The 2016 theme was really just a less good repeat of the 2009 theme, which was decent but didn't really scratch the itch. I think if Lego wants pirates to succeed in today's market they need to reemphasize engineering-based play, like string rigging for sails and cranes, articulated gun emplacements, etc. And of course, don't juniorize any of the decorative elements. The bizarre, minifigure-esque skull icon of the 2009 pirates really took away from the aesthetic.
Wow I never knew that was a Fabuland piece! No wonder it is so huge!
And yes apparently pirates are not so popular anymore. :(
man those old catalogue photos really captured my imagination back in the days...great stuff!
"It's good in its own way" is the best description. Such charm and nostalgia in this set. To me this is a perfect example of what LEGO use to be for me. A fantastic starting point to allow you to build more and encourage your own creativity. Nice review JANG. This is why I watch your channel for sure.
The crane system blew my mind away. So simple yet so yet effective. Truly amazing design
Still have this set!
LEGO Pirates was the last series I was into before my hiatus.
I had the Imperials and my friend collected the Pirates.
We had both original the ships and all the smaller sets.
Ahh the memories!
This set was in my older brother's collection when I was growing up. Got so many memories of playing with this along with the Imperial Flagship, Renegade Runner and the Lagoon lock-up. His sets inspired me to start a LEGO collection of my own and they've now been passed down to his son. The future is bright for LEGO-heads in this family!
it's coming full circle come July 7th! Eldorado Fortress remake here we go!
Thank you Jang and Beyond the Brick for review of this 1989, The Eldorado Fortress should be the next big Creator 3-in-1 set for 2022, follow up to the pirate ship and medieval castle!
I got this set when I was in Kindergarten in 1991. Great memories with this one. I still have it, complete, just not assembled. Mine had the actual shooting cannons and it was the only ones I had throughout the 90s.. I'm waiting for my kids to want to build it here at some point. Great video Jang, maybe this will make them want to put it together!
I had this set as a kid (in the US) and it had those same kind of cannons where you could just kind of push the "cannonball" out. I remember thinking it was pretty lame but otherwise I had so much fun playing with this set as a kid. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
How about Playmobil cannons? I had pirate cannons and US army (1860 era style) cannons that would shoot real shells, those were amazing fun, we would set up whole battlefields in a room and spend hours shooting down the other side. They would easily shoot 5 meters far. where they banned too?
In the early 90's that was one of my most favourite LEGO sets.
I'm so glad you had the opportunity to review this set :D It's no.1 on my Pirates theme wishlist, it's hard to find one in such good condition nowadays
This was one of my biggest childhood sets, and my first Pirate set. I promptly spent the next year collecting the entire first year line including the Barracuda. It was really amazing and I still occasionally keep it on display. The baseplate was used for many of my own builds over the years. Also, it's worth pointing out that these were the first figures with faceprinting other than the standard face, and also the first with non-standard legs and hands.
The good ol' days when lego gave plenty of figures.
Now we would get like 3
Nowadays, you'd get 1 pirate, 1 soldier officer, and 1 soldier.
That's why Chinese brick brand knock offs sell so well. Good Quolity and cost less then 1$ a peace for castle or Pirates.
@@DathanNaniel More like One skeleton, one princess? (Female officer maybe?) And one pirate with small useless legs
I had this one as a kid and I just loved it. Thanks for bringing back so good memories, Jang. I love the retro reviews!!
OMG yesss, I cannot wait for you to review more Pirates sets Jang!
I wasn't born in the 80s or 90s, so I didn't get these sets but my grandparents had a lot of these sets for there kids so by the time I got around to all the sets they were already destroyed, but I have lots of good memories playing with the raised baseplates and builidng pretty much whatever I wanted on them.
This is the most excited I ever got about a Christmas present when I got this years ago when it first came out.
I remember this set. The pirates, castle and old space sets were the best!
oh i still have this from when i were a child, i rebuilt it 3/4 years ago from my old Lego
My best friend had this as a kid and I just loved to play with it, and I thought it looked so majestic. Still a beauty.
I have always loved this set. Never had it. Wanted it. Built things to look like it out of what we had. This whole series was so iconically awesome and I would love them to bring it back.
I love this set! I picked up this and Inperial Trading Post as my first 2 sets after my reintroduction to LEGO as an adult...always wanted them as a kid
I never had Captain Roger (Redbeard) minifig, but that minifig was/is revolutionary! Peg leg, hook, facial print (beard, hair and eye patch),... all new in 1989.
You have 1990 catalog, that is why some sets were not marked as new (they were new in 1989).
I got this set in the early 90's, and I still have it, soon my son will play with it
Oh my god. Nostalgia alarms just fired on all cylinders when I saw the thumbnail. This is such an awesome set
My friend had this - I had the smaller little island fort.
Threw a ship into the mix and had countless hours of fun with this theme of lego as a child.
Man I miss these baseplate sets. Look how much room there is for figures and playing!
This is the earliest large lego set i remember getting in 89. My mom had a party one night and one her drunk friends sat on it by accident and I lost a couple pieces forever. This is a nostalgia BOMB. Amazing set and I wish I had kept it over the years
I got this for my birthday when I was 6. Just watched your video, unpacked it and built it. Building the whole line now that it is out of storage. Thanks for the fond memories Jang!
As always Jang, great review of a classic set. Looking forward to picking up the 2023 set soon!
This is one of the first Lego sets I ever had, and one that still exists in my parents' home (albeit incomplete, as I have no idea where many of the pieces are). Oh the memories.
Just look at those glorious Soldiers.
I was lucky enough to get the Imperial Trading Post when i was a kid.
The original red beard is one my favorite minifigs of all time
Seeing these reviews of my childhood sets is always delightful!
The first wave of cannons sold in the US were functional with dark gray barrels and handles. Those were short-lived, replaced by these versions with the black handles to indicate their nonworking mechanism. The third version was a complete remold, with the added band at the hinge, touch hole, and raised insignia.
Aaaahhh so THAT'S how it went! I thought the launching cannons were NEVER in the U.S.! Good to know!
I LOVE it when you review "classic" stuff.
Also a big Thanks to your Patreons.
So many memories such an awesome set. Wouldn't make something like this today. Love the fact there was actually lots of Minifigures. Lots of space and play features so many places to battle and place Minifigures
Sadly you're right, the only way they'd make something even remotely like this today is if they could slap "Disney®'s Pirates of the Caribbean™ featuring Captain Jack Sparrow©" on the side of the box.
@@zackakai5173 and Dante from the Devil May Cry Series DX
One of my favorite classic themes love this set and its larger brother the imperial trading post
When I was a kid my folks would never get me a big set like that. But I always loves those terrain baseplates and the depth they added.
I miss playing with those special bases as a kid. I never owned them but would play with them in school
How did you have lego at school?
I bought this set in 1993 in Ireland.
I loved this set as a kid. Still have it in my attic. Mine had the spring loaded cannons.
Very cool to see this old set. I feel like I have a better understanding of Barracuda Bay now.
Lego’s violence guidelines have always been just… really confusing. The castle can’t be grey because kids could create weapons or tanks out of grey bricks, but hey, I guess gun emplacements are fine.
Lego's official position is that violence has a place in children's play and has been proven to be beneficial, but they don't want to tie it to modern day military stuff. As such, historic (eg. Pirates, Wild West, etc.) and fantastical (eg. Star Wars, Marvel, etc.) stuff's fine, but tanks aren't.
I mean, back then war was a bit more relevant (the yellow castle era)
it's strange isn't it? But these old imperial sets to me have always represented more history than violence. Getting to see the old weapons and technology of back then, represented in LEGO form.
I can see the difference between that and having modern warfare sets.
@@CartoonyAndor19 how was war "more relevant"?
They made Darth "I killed tons of people" a clown :D
I had this set 34 years ago. Still remember the food times playing with it
I miss builds exactly like this. those base plates were amazing especially the space set base plates
So awesome to see! I was very lucky as a child, my parents got me this and the Black Sea Baracuda. Amazing times!
As a player of Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed* (thanks for the correction!), this review was fascinating! I wish we could still get some of these old figs. And the giant 3D baseplate is used SO well here!
*Unboxed
@@FernandowoTM yeah. hey
I’m so glad you’ve done this video. It brings back so many fantastic memories of the pirates sets from my childhood. The only one I never got from the catalog you showed was the barracuda.
I had everything off that catalogue page except the Barracuda - a lot of it is in ordinary condition now (still have the majority) and I must have spent 1000+ hours with those sets as a kid. Was ecstatic when the pirates of barracuda bay came out and I could complete the set.
This was my favourite Lego set as a kid. So many memories.
Serious nostalgia.
18:51 rare prices catalog of that days.
I'm so surprised to see that here! It was one of my first large sets and I spent countless hours playing with it as a kid. I rebuilt it few times too. Incredible set.
Great to see these old sets reviewed by Jang
Man. I played so much with this set when i was young. The comic that came with the pirate theme was also amazing👌
Oh man! Love the classic pirates sets. I have this very set built and on display in my Lego room. I have always loved it. Great choice to highlight.
This is possibly one of the most amazing sets Lego ever released. Amazing set. AMAZING doesn't even do it justice..
This is my all time favourite set! I own and love it to this day. And I'm happy to see you reviewing it Jang! More of the golden era Lego stuff please!
YES JANGBRICKS DOES PIRATES REVIEW YES
I got this set for Christmas 1989. My older brother got the Black Seas Barracuda. We waged war well into the new year.
I love this set. It's at my grandparents house and I get to see it a couple times a year. It is a really cool set and thanks for reviewing it!
I love it. I have long wanted some of these vintage Lego pirate reviews from you. I would love to see a review of my favorite Lego set of all time; 6277.
Man, I love these old pirate sets, wish I was born earlier.
Amazing set! Glad to see a review of this. Definitely a fun build!
Such a joy to have a review of a classic set. Thank you
*Lego needs to remake this set like the Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay set*
barracuda maker already did one and it passed. But it wasnt chosen.
I was always a big [and still am] a classic space fan, along with knights and town, but never pirates. However, that said, this set would have been amazing to have as a kid. I think the designer made great use of that 3D baseplate and really built up a lot for the small number of pieces in this set. Even though some areas just have 1 or 2 studs [knobs!] wide to display figures, there are lots and lots of places to do so. I could see kids playing with this for a long time, and also making modifications pretty easily to it. What an amazing set!
One of my favourite all time sets. So many memories of playing with this as a kid!
This is a very cool review retro Lego set from 1989, I was also not much into Pirates at that time, more Classic Space than anything, but I can see the appeal of the theme, boats, treasure chest and all that kind of stuff, really a cool look back, thanks for sharing, Jang! And thank you also to Beyond the Brick!
I love you reviewing classic sets!
Great review of one of my favorite sets as a kid! This brought back a lot of memories, so thanks!
Those 3d base plates were glorious! I think the last time Lego used one was Pharaoh's Quest, which was a great one.
I’m so glad you reviewed this! I have it in pieces with my Caribbean Cruiser and a few others! I love the yellow castles along with Knights & Pirates! Back then, all the mini figures were the same and I can really appreciate the animal figures that used to come with them like the shark, alligator, monkey, bird, etc.. Timeless!
I loved seeing this. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
Ahh an old fave
As a kid I always wanted this set, but could never afford it. Then I grew up.. and now as an adult I want it again 😄
I had a good friend who had this set and always wanted it. I'm a big fan of Pirates and hope LEGO releases more in the future.
Wow .Amazing! You are nowadays reviewing more amazing lego system sets! Nice and keep up the good work.
Love this set! Just so you know, the 1x1 modified plate that has the string tied to it is meant to be removed and pulled to raise or lower the crane. It was just a manual way of doing it. Not sure why they didn't include a winch with the set, as they had those for a long time before this.
I got this for Christmas when I was a kid. This was one of my favourite sets. I rebuilt it 1 million times over, so much fun. I wish we could still get sets like this
My favorite and long-desired set. I managed to buy it last year, but without a box, but in very good condition, almost like new, even the white parts are not yellowed. Lego lover 58 years old)))
This video just got recommended on my feed, and for a second I thought it was the new one 😂
I had this as a kid. So much nostalgia. Thanks Jang!
Love your reviews! Great as always! Miss this set. Sold to nephew!
I had a lot of the 1989 Pirate stuff, everything except for the 2 ships I think. I was all into Knights before, but I prefered these. Though Black Monarch is still my number one castle. From the pirate castles, I especially liked the Forbidden Island for some reason. I played with it a lot.
Someone's probably mentioned it but the springless cannons that still had the black plunger were used in the first wave (maybe first two waves?) of Pirates sets in 1989 as a stop-gap solution. The molds are all the same as the European-market firing cannons, the springs are just left out. In subsequent waves they introduced the single-mold cannon piece with the crossed-sword emblem molded onto it, that also didn't have the little rod down the barrel.
After 34 years, the printed wall elements, and even the same part in solid yellow are still exclusive to this set.
Best pirate castle my opinion, tank you very much for yor contribution and labor.
