As a person owning Diesel cars since 2004, I prefer diesels for their drivability, and efficient operation. Petrols are a different character, and you tend to maintain higher speeds unknowingly probably due to the engine smoothness and tendency to increase revs with a constant throttle opening.

nice to hear. one of the 1st place which actually acknowledges average speed in important while calculating real world fuel efficiency. fyi my average speed in mumbai stop and go route during peak hours is 12 kmph.
CAFE regulations is a great learning as many like me were not aware and we understand why the car manufacturers are forced to focus on fuel economy and hence compromised fun.. Also, the need to have hybrids and EVs in their portfolio to comply with these norms
About fuel types E10/E20 and XP95(blended with 10% Ethanol) of Indian Oil - In my daily driving experience I have noticed that E20 gives lesser fuel efficiency that E10 for a BS6 car. XP95 is cleaner but giving same efficiency as E20 fuel. Also the pertol pumps operators don't have enough knowlege that if you have a BS4 car the go to fuel recommended shoud be E10 but when you reach there you have a long queue of 2 wheelers on that machine. Hence in a BS4 car if you fill E20 fuel it can't give the required efficiency. As indian automotive customers we are not getting the right fuel efficiency as the fuel filled is not upto the mark as it includes ethanol plus some adulterations.
The biggest loophole in the cafe system is that it doesn’t account for CO2 generated as part of production. This gives the illusion of EVs being more efficient, whereas the amount of CO2 generated in the production of the battery is completely ignored.

I think your driving style is commendable and so is the vehicle. I won't suggest at all anything that you wished folks would, as can't afFord to lose a nice driving machine that's a Ford!
@autocarindia1 turbo Petrol's are also majorly affected by ambient temps which are generally pretty high in India. IAT is the gremlin which turns the experience sour. VW has great tech like Water jacket etc, BMW have water spray injection to cool down charge temps but there will always be limits when ambients are as high as 50 degrees outside!
09:51 But 1-2 psi lower than recommended tyre pressure is always preferable It result in drastic fall in tyre noise coming into cabin Very comfy ride If you fill the recommended amount of pressure in that case as you drive tyres heat up and the actual pressure increases 2-3 psi resulting in irritating tyre noise and bumpy ride, which eventually result in fatigue.
Just to make it clear, VW 2.0 group cars's (1.0 & 1.5) mandated fuel is 95 octane. Same for XUV3XO TGDI. This is something many are unware of. 91 octane is effectively killing these engine by knocking.
I think best is to have a plug - in hybrid with battery capacity/ efficiency for range of 60 to 100 kms on full charge. It will fulfill requirements of daily commutation for office goers in cities. Rest the ICE engine to take on when driving beyond 50 kms of range in a day or as per choice of driver. Here the overall fuel efficiency of a vehicle will definitely improve.
Boot space will suffer so ultimately it will be worse for road trips whereas the initial goal itself was to use EV in city but ice on highway The real question is a cost benefit analysis between building infra (long term vision, generates active revenue) vs subsidies for PHEV (short term vision, doesn’t generate revenues from same money pool

Love your podcast. My dad has been a subscriber of your magazine since its inception, (It used to be Auto India before Autocar India) so I have grown up reading the magazine. One thing have noticed over the years is that the number of cars that you have tested for efficiency has gone down significantly. Most of the times the data contains only the figure for Indian driving cycle. I understand it's a tedious and time consuming process. But it would be great extremely helpful if you expand your range (no pun intended) on this front, including the EVs as well.
Good topic. You are correct about the turbo charged petrol but in some cases Virtus GT plus MT gives a good mileage. I am a sedan or a hatchback lover since in my budget these cars fits and they are good to drive . SUVs like Creta, Taigun are not real SUVs. Some craze is driving the sales. I own a Virtus GT plus MT since I don’t like automatics. In a speed range from 72 to 89 the mileage I receive is around 17 to 22 kmpl . Previously I used to drive a Ford Figo 1.5 titanium plus diesel.
Why do there is absence of diesel hybrids or range extenders with it. Diesel range extender/hybrids wd be way better than petrol ones for efficiency sake and emissions too can be controlled better as range extender requires it to operate at optimum level!!
Cost. Diesel engines are more expensive than petrols. And then you add another propulsion system on top of it. The same car will be 40% more expensive. Might as well get an electric car at that point. They are the best automatics anyway
Hybrid increases mileage no change in emissions Hybrid diesel would still make same amount of particulate when running on engine Further diesel is already 1-2L costlier than petrol And hybrid is 4-5L costlier than petrol itself Overall nexon EV which costs 15L and nexon diesel AMT which costs 13L will end up costing 20L for diesel hybrid You can buy 8L Tiago EV and 12L Brezza for cost of one nexon diesel hybrid
My observation is FE is more a marketing gimmick.. many owners don’t drive for getting max fuel efficiency nor they pay attention to calculate it.. only if FE drops by more than 5 kmpl , they really check what’s wrong with the car! 😢
Hybrids have engine thereby lower efficiency compared to full ev. And complex. In EU one study shows plugin hybrids are more polluting than ICE vehicles due consumer behaviour. Again hybrids have more complex so increase risk of fire (more than ICE and EV) and cost of maintenance.
I saw one ioc pump with both e20 and regular petrol. I asked the person who was filling petrol - he said he didn't know the difference and both are the same. Will old cars get damaged with e20 fuel?
Yeah so e20 is more corrosive than regular petrol. Your engine will be damaged unless and until it is specified by the manufacturer that it is safe to use
It's a bit of a scam I think. One HP petrol pump owner told me that petrol being sold at all HP pumps (Punjab he meant) is now E20. I asked him why they don't display it prominently. He said the company doesn't allow that yet.
EVs are good but in India where there is load shedding in most parts charging can be a challenge. In some places diesel generators are used during load shedding and if this is used for the charging of EVs the same should be factored in the calculation of CAFE. For India in my opinion Hybrid is a good choice.

@18:15 i wish you were right right here sir! but people are only willing to sacrifice fuel efficieny talks only when it comes to a heavier built 5 star rated car and not a better driving car! people who drive well are significantly lower in numbers than people who just drive on ok on weekends. otherwise good driving cars from ford chevorolet and now citroen wouldnt have struggled. people know nexons bad FE but still go for it just cuz of its 5 star safety ratings even tho its engine is so very unreliable. now that i have seen you talked about CAFE ratings, it is even more clearer to me
Another informative session. Thanks for this. A few thoughts. 1. Will Ola Electric become the carbon credits seller of India like Tesla of USA. 2. Does mild hybrid account for in CAFE norms? If yes, it will become a necessity in 2027. 3. If all cars have to have at least a mild hybrid system from 2027, then it’s not a good time to buy a new car until then.
I bought Creta Turbo Petrol and realized that the real world KMPL could be almost half of what they have quoted. It's certainly fun to drive and great while overtaking, but the fuel efficiency can be a great downside. I think I will take your advise and try 95 octain. As per API CK 4 (USA) and ACEA E8 (Europe) the allowable sulphated Ash in lube oil is nil. the phosphorus content is 1200 ppm and 800 ppm maximum respectively. The sulphur content is 4000 ppm and 3000 ppm maximum respectively. The purpose of this is to protect the catalytic converters and dpfs of euro 6 engines in automobiles. SAPS are meant to enhance the anti wear, detergent and dispersant properties of lube oils. Will these lower levels reduce the life of the engines and affect their long term durability and reliability. Request your informed opinion on the subject. Thank you very much.
Does reducing aircon temp result in better efficiency considering Cold Air ~ Hot Air temperature balance is maintained by introducing hot air from coolant pipe rather than reducing ac compressor load. Are modern cars finally using load reducing compressor? (inverter type as in homes) would request Autocar team to please confirm on this :)
Due to E20 petrol the plastic and rubber parts inside the engine will get melted and engine issues will occur. Before 2023 vehicles will be facing issues until some internal changes are made inside the engine. By god's grace my vehicle TVS Raider is E20 compatible engine
What a lovely podcast deep drive into every aspect. As i already make a request to Podcast on #HondaCarsIndia . ●Why HONDA sell strong hybride on #HondaCity despite that sedan segment is very niche now-a-days in India rather than #HondaElevate ? ●Why HONDA don't introduced turbo engines here in India ? ●Why HONDA do not lanuched sub 4m SUV. Breeza, Nexon segment ? ●What are their plans in India?
Indian government should opt for a smooth transition by incentivising Strong/plug-in hybrids, push for EVs all out right now is not the best choice to make since EV industry is at its infancy and still need a considerable amount of time to be a proper alternative to ICE vehicle. Majority of Indian car buyers purchase only 1 car which has to be an all rounder, EV just isn't a mass option for atleast next 10 years.
Because it takes too much cost space and weight 1. Already GV/hyry boot loses 100L (350L vs 250L) between hybrid and ice. PHEV will be even smaller boot space, so the idea of using ICE on long trips is moot because boot cannot accommodate luggage for the trip in the first place. Same issue with FCEVs also, long range but no boot space to make use of the range on trips 2. That’s just the battery, you still need OBC, DCDC, BMS, motor, all of this junk is in the front in ev’s where engine was. You can’t put it in front anymore. Anywhere else and service will be a nightmare. Just look up Camry/lexus battery access, while rear seat has to be ripped open. 3. All this drastically increases weight, Nexon EV is 70kg more than ICE after removing engine and ancillaries. If you keep it, it will exceed harrier weight (1700kg) just for Nexon. Handling and suspension goes for a toss 4. Since PHEVs have smaller battery, and mostly no liquid cooling, the battery degradation will be worse than EV. A 250km range Nexon EV is cycled once per week in my 40km per day usage. A PHEV with 40km range will be fully exhausted everyday. I’ll be putting cycles 7x faster on a PHEV which means less longevity. 40x1500 cycles = 60000km. 250x1500 cycles = 375K km 5. PHEVs don’t have DCFC support, so most of the public charging infra is useless for PHEVs. And PHEVs sales do not improve infra for ev’s because ev’s benefit from fast charging - which PHEVs don’t have - and PHEVs can only slow charge - which is not viable for ev’s. You see the problem here? 6. Since PHEVs can’t fast charge, on long trips, you’ll have worse mileage than normal hybrid or even ICE. You can charge if you are staying at a hotel overnight but that’s about it. Even in city, there have been times when I’ve charged at fast charger just because I was already at a mall with charger and I can charge while shopping. With PHEV you can’t. You can slow chargers - but that takes 7-8h which you won’t be spending at any mall or parking other than at homes These are just the technical challenges, with the kind of discipline Indians have, they won’t even bother to charge the cars and run on ICE mode which is worse for emissions - same engine hauling 1700kg car vs 1300kg means less mileage and more emissions than ICE model of same car And it’s not we who lack discipline, even the westerners don’t bother to charge either - so imagining Indians doing it is impossible. www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-54170207.amp www.transportenvironment.org/discover/plug-hybrids-new-emissions-scandal-tests-show-higher-pollution-claimed/ It’s just not viable for the size, price and the weight of cars sold here. In west, you can downsize the engine from a I6/V8 to I4 (what Volvo did) to save space and weight But the same isn’t possible on Indian cars which are already I3/I4 Mazda put a rotary in the MX30 but that has even more emissions than normal ICE as we all know. Only reason it passed because the emissions of ICE mode aren’t considered in WLTP, only the combined mode emissions are.
We have very compact cars, strong hybrid kills 100L boot space (350L > 250L) I don’t think it is practical to make PHEV in form factor and size sold in India.
I drive the Nissan Magnite 1.0 Turbo CVT within city limits...at times it shows a mileage of 10-11 kmph and at times it hardly clocks 7-8 kmph under similar traffic conditions...what could be wrong and how do I extract better mileage ?
Thanks for bringing this topic for us Sirs!!, never knew there is so much happening behind the efficiency subjects of vehicles. eye opener indeed, .Look forward for more !! thank you Gentlemen!
Sir, can you please help me with my confusion? Is buying a new Audi A4 or any other car that only runs on e10 fuel risky at this point ? Considering the launch of e20 very soon ? Please advice
Please make podcast on ford ecosport. and it's engines . TDCi, ecoboost and NA. I know ford has exited the market. but that car is an emotion . In India FORD=Ecosport.
ICE cars are becoming way more inefficient with every passing year... Car manufacturers are compromising with the quality of the car body to make it lighter to improve fuel efficiency. Car safety and build is more important than fuel efficiency
They will have to sell more hybrids than a brand with EV will have to sell EV For example Tata may need to sell only 2500 EV per month in order to get same benefit as Toyota selling 3000 hybrids
Gov should sell premium fules at subsidies and less price than regular fules as its more efficient and saves earth. But in reality they sell it at premium
So hormaz and sergius- you don’t recommend a turbo DCT car ? I was planning to buy a seltos 1.5 turbo petrol dct and a Verna 1.5 turbo petrol dct. However we don’t drive more than 3-7 km everyday . But we don’t want a lazy car . Something that’s fun to drive but not a drag on maintenance costs / gear box failure . I am okay to live with a fuel efficiency of 9-10kmpl in city and 14-15 kmpl on highway
Turbo petrols with DCTs are actually more lazy than a 1.5 NA and CVT in stop and go traffic! and for you short run you want something that's smooth and easier to drive

Test drives of Hormad and Renuka are exceptional till now never seen anyone did, clear, concise to the core.
Lighting my auto knowledge from paper form to digital now.
Amazing job Sorabji love you.
Great to watch these videos.. with technical insights.. very difficult to get these info for normal people ❤
Thank you !
@18:15 i wish you were right right here sir!
but people are only willing to sacrifice fuel efficieny talks only when it comes to a heavier built 5 star rated car and not a better driving car!
people who drive well are significantly lower in numbers than people who just drive on ok on weekends.
otherwise good driving cars from ford chevorolet and now citroen wouldnt have struggled.
people know nexons bad FE but still go for it just cuz of its 5 star safety ratings even tho its engine is so very unreliable.
now that i have seen you talked about CAFE ratings, it is even more clearer to me
Please improve the audio on the podcast. I feel like I need to push the volume higher than normal to hear Hormaz properly. Great episode.
CAFE is for manufacturers not buyers
I bought Creta Turbo Petrol and realized that the real world KMPL could be almost half of what they have quoted. It's certainly fun to drive and great while overtaking, but the fuel efficiency can be a great downside. I think I will take your advise and try 95 octain. Hope Hyundai will not have an issue with it. 😮
Great topic and an engaging discussion. Fuel efficiency will continue to remain the core of a car buying decision for millions.
Bhaiyo ek simple si baat ka jawaab chahiye ... agr apko driving ka maza hi nhi lena hai toh gadi ki jgha public transport lelo .... ussey environment achi trha bach skta hai. ... industrial waste se global warming nhi ho rhi hai but gadiyo ki wjha se ho rhi hai .. waow ..... hypocrisy ki b ek limit hoti hai
This Baretto guy is very knowledgeable . Alongwith Hormuz , absolutely enjoyable to hear
Publishing the fuel card on your website would be a good way to let us people know
I’m enjoying this pod cast and you both are more apt for a podcast and giving such deep information about industry and their business prospects etc this is awesome you, looking forward for more interesting topics
Treasure house of great auto world knowledge discussed in simple language which makes u long for the next Saturday..tons of thanks to Autocar India for this great initiative
Too good discussion on every week, to know automotive better. Thank you!
I have been following autocar magazine since 2010, @autocar .. off late I have seen you guys are not updating the figures for interior width, legroom, headroom etc .. also 0 to 100 timings etc .. in the tables at the end of the magazine .. Hope you update them in coming editions
Feedback noted :-)
Love to watch such a beautiful content every week..thanks a lot Sergius and Hormaz.
Thank you !
Sir did you check the efficiency of Tata Nexon for the BS6 engine...??? or can I get the RUclips review ....???
Does using 95 Octain help in Creta turbo petrol too, will Hyundai not have any issue with warranty 🤔
I don't see any impact of climate control on fuel efficiency. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?
No one cares here either gov or company everyone here to loot money 😂 gov why cant it reduce tax on hybrids they dont simply its time pass
Efficiency means less fuel burnt for a trip,, which equals less co2 produced
@@raziabdulrahim3042 👏
Cafe explanation clearly shows what would be the future strategy for manufacturers.
if the roads are bad no technology can give better fuel efficiency...
1L TSI on 95 octane gives 10-11 kmpl in city and 16-18kmpl on highway with a fe enthusiastic revvs in between
Sir, I am confused which car should I buy. Bolero Neo N10 or Grand Vitara Delta. Please help me with the best advice.
Buy 3xo
This podcast series is much better than so many RUclips dramas and other celeb podcasts.
They will pack up their bag soon from india
Indian government should opt for a smooth transition by incentivising Strong/plug-in hybrids, push for EVs all out right now is not the best choice to make since EV industry is at its infancy and still need a considerable amount of time to be a proper alternative to ICE vehicle. Majority of Indian car buyers purchase only 1 car which has to be an all rounder, EV just isn't a mass option for atleast next 10 years.
Because it takes too much cost space and weight
1. Already GV/hyry boot loses 100L (350L vs 250L) between hybrid and ice. PHEV will be even smaller boot space, so the idea of using ICE on long trips is moot because boot cannot accommodate luggage for the trip in the first place. Same issue with FCEVs also, long range but no boot space to make use of the range on trips
Handling and suspension goes for a toss
4. 250x1500 cycles = 375K km
You can slow chargers - but that takes 7-8h which you won’t be spending at any mall or parking other than at homes
These are just the technical challenges, with the kind of discipline Indians have, they won’t even bother to charge the cars and run on ICE mode which is worse for emissions - same engine hauling 1700kg car vs 1300kg means less mileage and more emissions than ICE model of same car
And it’s not we who lack discipline, even the westerners don’t bother to charge either - so imagining Indians doing it is impossible. www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-54170207.amp
www.transportenvironment.org/discover/plug-hybrids-new-emissions-scandal-tests-show-higher-pollution-claimed/
It’s just not viable for the size, price and the weight of cars sold here. In west, you can downsize the engine from a I6/V8 to I4 (what Volvo did) to save space and weight
But the same isn’t possible on Indian cars which are already I3/I4
Mazda put a rotary in the MX30 but that has even more emissions than normal ICE as we all know. Only reason it passed because the emissions of ICE mode aren’t considered in WLTP, only the combined mode emissions are.
Thanks for highlighting facts we didn't know before. I would prefer plug-in hybrid cars over EVies or strong hybrids. But , no respite in India.
We have very compact cars, strong hybrid kills 100L boot space (350L > 250L)
I don’t think it is practical to make PHEV in form factor and size sold in India.
For ev, people will only be concerned about cost and range, not efficiency. Hope batteries dont get too cheap so that it's automatically factored in!
Can we have some podcast related to Mitsubishi, their vision for India to bring cars?
Very good podcast. So many new insights which i was not knowing.. cafe, turbo problems.. Keep it up
From what I’ve understood about E20, it gives lower mileage and power while being less polluting right?
That’s correct
0 to 60 on battary n fuel beyond 60kmph is the need of the hour. At affordable prices for mass usage.
Does Astor need Octane95 fuel due to its high compression engine although it is not a turbo?
golden content, please keep providing.... thank you
Best pod so far! Loved the technical insights. Won't mind if it gets even longer and in depth
@autocarindia1 Thank You for such amazing podcasts.
Today’s video is helpful and informative, specially the stuff related to the TSI Turbos
ICE cars are becoming way more inefficient with every passing year... Car manufacturers are compromising with the quality of the car body to make it lighter to improve fuel efficiency. Car safety and build is more important than fuel efficiency
I think the best solution for VW is to manufacture plugin hybrid in India.
Hormazd, you are a University. Respect 🫡🫡
Is hybrids only solution?. I mean if a car company has only hybrids and no EV can it meet cafe 3
They will have to sell more hybrids than a brand with EV will have to sell EV
For example
Tata may need to sell only 2500 EV per month in order to get same benefit as Toyota selling 3000 hybrids
Gov should sell premium fules at subsidies and less price than regular fules as its more efficient and saves earth. But in reality they sell it at premium
Can 95 octane petrol be used in NA engines?
I owned 2024 diesel seltos, with spirited driving iam getting 17-18 km/l cannot get in turbo petrol in seltos
Great discussion, if possible also do a podcast on hyundai planning to bring an ipo and what is in it for India or is it only one sided
Great podcast! Please make another one that delves deeper into 'energy efficiency' of EVs.
Wgat happebed to the Maruti series hybrids ?
Awesome awesome podcast. Coming from a Team-Bhpian... Loved it !!!
An Eye opener conversation ... looking forward for more such insightful information.
Hormaz is Gold
jimny is giving me efficiency of 10 in city and 14 on highway, with ac. thats decent
Love these podcasts! My new favourite thing ❤
Why there is no CNG EV hybrid.?
I think those who want high mileage only hybrid can give
You already lost 100L boot space in GV segment car, why do you want to completely eliminate boot space from cars by making cng hybrid?
Look forward to a podcast on lube oils used in modern automobiles (synthetic, semi synthetic, mineral oil based) as well as lube oil standards like api ck 4 (usa) and acea e8 (europe) including present and future standards for India
In Canada 91 octane is still the premium fuel and it's extremely rare that you would get anything better than that 😂
I hearby coin the equivalent for "Gas Guzzler" for EVs, "Watt Waster" 🤣
Thanks 👍 Long Run Engine Maintence by Using Ethanol Blended Petrol ⛽
Fuel efficient cars are less polluting... so Indian mindset was always enviromentally friendly....
Why not diesel hybrid??
