I don’t think the IMT deserves the hatred it gets. I drive a Sonet IMT and for me it’s the perfect blend of having the clutch free comfort of an automatic and fun of gear slotting that comes for a petrol head.
In my experience, Torque converter is the best gearbox it doesn't have the rubber band effect of CVT(great on highways) and doesn't have the jerkiness of Dct on slower speeds. Also gives mechanical orgasm which the cvt doesn't have.
Very nice session, though I completely disagree with your views on IMT. I own a seltos diesel IMT model & am proud of my choice. Its ideal for Indians & the reasons are below 1) Smooth transmission & no jerks unlike a manual or AMT 2) Mileage is quite good even in Bangalore traffic 3) It's fun to drive on highways as overtakes are quick..no lags 4) Most importantly, your left leg will Thank you !!
e-CVT is actually a motor-generator combo. The engine is linked to a generator and the power generated is given to the motor via power electronics. Absolutely reliable combo.

This will set you and your reviews apart
CVT is definitely better than AMT as long as it is not made by Nissan, or Honda. Toyota's CVT is bomb sure, very reliable and well made. They use them in their lexus too. Between my wife's Toyota Auris cvt and my Mazda CX5 torque converter, I notice no difference while driving, they both are smooth and totally disappear in the background of driving.
What is the problem with Honda CVT ? I'm planning to buy next Honda Amaze (launching Jan 2025) with CVT, hence need your suggestion. My other option is Maruti Dzire AMT with latest z12 three cylinder engine (launching 4 Nov 2024). Thanks a lot!
Honda CVT is also good for 100,000 kms. Not many complaints. @@Raj-g4l8t. Haan. Nissan ones are worst made by Jatko. Even Maruti used these cvts in Baleno. These are good for 50k kms
This podcast was mostly 4-wheeler focused, and missed out some notable 2-wheeler milestones. 1. Scooters used to primarily be geared till the 90s. It was the Kinetic Honda and majorly the Activa that wiped out geared scooters from our market. It was the CVT transmission that played a major role there. 2. In 2009-10, TVS introduced the Jive bike with cluthless manual. Don't know why, but this model failed in the market. 3. Honda uses the DCT gearbox in Goldwing and Africa Twin, as well in other models like the NX750. 4. Most recently the Yamaha announced that the MT-09 would feature the AMT system.
Maruti 800 was indeed the first AT in India. My landlord had one in early nineties due to his disability. Daewoo introduced ATs in Cielo around the same time as Zen.

And the whole needing of a permit to buy an AT is also new to me. I remember back in 93-94, a lady in Madikeri used to drive a yellow AT Zen. I obviously didn't know head or tail about transmission back then. But I remember the gear stick was different than most car. iMT should be the default choice replacing all standard MTs & be incentivized by the Govt because of how affordable & incredibly convenient it is to the left foot. Change my mind!
AMT is an under appreciated gearbox. Its gets the job done. It feels closes to deriving an MT. The shift points can be a roll of the dice sometimes and shift times can be higher in lower gears. But it gives the feeling of fixed gear ratios with minimal slip, unlike a torque converter(newer ones are better) or CVT. There is a lot of fun to be had in an AMT when driven hard.

I love the manual transmission. It gives you much better feel and is far more engaging. I think ant auto enthusiasts would. But the current traffic conditions make it really difficult for onw to drive. More so if you have a big diesel engine you had it. The worst part is that the clutch progressively becomes harder as you log on kilometers in your odometer. What I would like to have is a power clutch. Could be similar to power brakes or power steering. Such that there is some boost to to your effort is available and the clutch remains as light as a new car. Someone need to work on this option too. 😊

The AMT or automated manual transmission is one of the worst transmission with 100% failure rate. Give it 2 to 5 years and it always predictably failed. Our car was the Toyota Aygo a small city car with AMT. What failed was the hydraulic mechanism or actuators or solenoids that shifted the gear for you. It was cheap to produce, expensive to maintain and terrible in function with head nods, slipping gear mechanism, no creep function, lurchy behaviour and a guaranteed failure. After having changed the first actuator after 5 years of ownership and still under Toyota Guarantee, it again started playing up with gear being stuck in park, lurchy behaviour, 3 years after the renewed acctuator and we knew what was coming, so we got rid of the car. Never another AMT again! On the side issue AMT or AMT like automated manual transmission is used in many high end trucks like Volvo, Scannia etc wiyhout much problem. So why did it fail in cars?
Honda and Toyota and Nissan and Suzuki world over using CVT from close to two decades and smootness and driving comfort for normal car user in city or highway or hill drive.Out Of india Europe ,Middle east, african countries and even part of USA too.Only enthusiast who want to Rave the car 120 plus and want insane instant power requirement shoul go for manual only automatic is not for them.Toyota world no 1 car manufacturer from decades using CVT for whole world car buyers CVT in those market where manual transmission is not in use from 1. 5 decades.
What is u r take on DSG which are VW 2.0 still reliability is an issue If we compare with TATA DCA or HYNDAI DCT are they all imported gear box ? Or make in India
I like DSG as I haven't driven DCA or DCT but I can sure that DSG is little complex n expensive. But we should support our own brand (Indian brands) provided the after sales service should be better n taken care seriously by the brands TATA & MAHINDRA.
CVT the manufacturer says dont change the transmission fluid. Especially high mileage vehicles if you want to replace the oil they would ask you to sign a waiver that if "any issues after oil replace company not responsible"
@svkcars6582 Which manufacturer said that ? Whole world says the opposite, i.e. change the engine oil and tranmission fluid as soon the prescribed range is reached.
I think best automatic would be engine not connected to wheels at all. Have engine run at optimal constant speed to charge small battery and let motors drive the car taking power from battery. Basically strong hybrid is the best automatic
Tata DCA on Altroz has so much lag. Probably takes a second from the time acc is pressed and car starts moving.. AMT on Baleno is so refined and quick to respond
CVT in the newer honda cars is the best for big city start go traffic. DCTs not really the better option in such traffic and definitely no if they have turbo. Very few of us normal users get to race our engines 90% of the time. And it is this painful 90% part where these car enthusiasts don't have any experience on. Need to keep real-life user needs when giving advice on transmissions

I like DSG as I haven't driven DCA or DCT but I can sure that DSG is little complex n expensive. But we should support our own brand (Indian brands) provided the after sales service should be better n taken care seriously by the brands TATA & MAHINDRA.
They are imported, and if you take care, they may last. But, they are still unpredictable being a dry clutch DCT
much needed podcast
Excellent Podcast...😊
For me, there are only two gearboxes in this world. Manual transmission and the Automatic gearbox or Torque converter or Slushmatic.
Automatic is the way to go
I've driven it👌👌the 800 auto..it was a decent car
Good discussion, insights will be useful
Nicely explained about the clutch
Tata DCA on Altroz has so much lag. Probably takes a second from the time acc is pressed and car starts moving.. AMT on Baleno is so refined and quick to respond
Please do a video on How to properly drive automatic car in traffic. how to manage or what to do in such condition
are VW 2.0 cars like Virtus GT with DSG gearbox reliable ?
If you can take care of it and know the driving dynamics of DQ200 as it is a dry gearbox bumper to bumper traffic takes a toll on these gearboxes.
Is Creta DCT a dry clutch or a wet clutch??
Nothing beats the MT. ATs can't match MTs. Only advantage ATs have is convenience.
My 2011 AT corolla altis jerks from 1st gear to 2nd gear, toyota says change engine for 3lakh, 20. Depreciation alone has car valued at 4. 😅
Complete bullshit from Toyota. Just change the AT gear oil and it'll solve the problem of jerking.
2 years of life left. Continue using it and upgrade to an EV when it is absolute junk
"Honda" almost ignored in this discussion!!! 🤗😢 Supposed to be very good automatics...🤔
Kudos to mahindra for rolling out a petrol torque conversion car at 11.3 lakhs that's great pricing
