What are your thoughts on sub-4m rule relaxed to sub-4.2m? It will make cars even more safer by allowing carmakers to have longer front and rear overhangs without compromising or squeezing cabin. Plus it will allow some more space in vehicle to package hybrid powertrain and still have decent boot space and engine compartment. Also, another perspective I can think of is that it will increase the desirability of cars in lower end and keeping the buyers in sub-4.2 meter segment rather than jumping to SUVs with bigger engines (less pollution eventually).

Sub 4 metre is the main reason India is full of ugly looking cars compared to other markets. If they wanted a unique regulation, it could have been based on efficiency instead of sub 4 metre
I think sub 4 metre is good rule for market like India where the roads cannot accommodate the full size cars and at the same time the ultra small cars sold in Japan won't be very practical here hence it's good to have 4 metre rule
I am currently working with Hyundai india and I recently met someone who use to work with mahindra long time ago and he told the story behind "O" endings.. So basically Anand Mahindra is a spiritual guy and he believes in naming his cars as per the astrology and numberology, that's why he has Mahindra's own pandit who helps in naming cars. Excellent podcast, we could learn many new things. We truly appreciate your initiative to address the questions that the public has. I have a small question regarding Renault, thought it is one of the car which ignited the suv trend in a sportier way, even though it is a huge success initially why is the company not serious on upgrading it when the competitors are continuously grabbing the market, if they r not serious why to do business in india which will build a bad reputation going further
35:07 This perception of 'safety' then becomes an arms race until you end up with every middle aged mother driving a 5.5m Pickup Truck just because everyone else is driving a Military Grade tank. At least, India hasn't gone full crazy, most our cars are pseudo-SUVs, but it's headed down the wrong path. Not only is it bad for efficiency and environment, as you mentioned, it's also terribly dangerous for pedestrians and their space utilization on roads is even worse than a normal car. A question for the next time you do these, What can we do to reverse the SUV trend, especially at the regulatory level? My solution would be to scrap the segments by length and engine capacity (which is nonsensical), and replace it with segments by curb weight and fuel efficiency, which could help disincentivize SUVs. Also, this would not disincentivize higher ground clearance, which is why some people buy SUVs.
Can you please clear my doubts about 4x4 and AWD systems? So in Car Like Endeavour (2016 Model) 4x4 is always active, even if car is driving over 80kmph? In Cars like BMW/Mercedes, the cars like X3 or Q5 they drive all 4W all the time or at certain speed they become only 2W drive. If this happens then their rear wheel will drive or front wheel? I believe in cars like Compass, Kodiaq or XUV7OO where either you get FWD or AWD options, if we drive AWD, after a certain speed the cars will drive only FWs? Also these cars the AWD is engaged say in normal condition also or it only gets activated when we stuck in some sand or loose traction of slippery road. Also AWD of Maruti Grand Vitara is similar to XUV/Compass or its lower grade. In Cars like Thar Roxx where normally it'd RWD, but for 4x4 we have to engage manually. So if I drive say hilly section (say Khandala Ghar) is it okay to drive in 4H or what is the right usage of 4H?

Why is center of gravity higher in case of ladder frame compared to a monocoque with similar gc. if most of the weight is in ladder that is down, center of gravity should be further down, right?
That's an interesting question, yes the ladder frame weight is lower down however with everything mounted onto it, it generally raises the positioning of components like the engine, gearbox, seats and of course body too. Thus in general a ladder frame vehicle will have a higher CG.

Though Diesel engines are more efficient, they are being discontinued due to emission problems. Can anything be done to improve emissions in Diesel vehicles?
This is ridiculous as to why the perceived value of a sedan is more than the hatch back because if you look at it closely the hatch back is the more practical of the two. Push those two last row of seats down and your hatch back becomes a van to load things, even longer articles. The rear view of a hatchback is far better than that of a sedan and reversing the car is so much easier. This must be an Indian thing that the sedan is perceived to be a status symbol. After all a worldwide popular SUV is a hatchback on steroids!
It’s how most in our country think where vehicle is bought to get noticed or false pride. Hatchbacks are an absolute boon in cities and even otherwise. I had the polo GT tsi & drove it for 1 lakh kms in 4 years. Was a treat.
Hi Hormazd ... why is it that we don't see small EVs in India except Tiago ev , every manufacturer is launching its EV in 20 lacs ballpark ? Can Electrification save the small car segment in India like once tata did nano ev for ola or an Alto ev.
Is Suzuki considering three door Jimny for India? They should have released Three Door version rather than ugly five door one. Suzuki meddled with the good looking original design which has absolutely no issues.
Why does any other company launch a competitor to the eartiga/xl6 or Ecco type of MPV in last 6 years with reference of vfm type vehicle. Kia only has carens with mix of mpv/suv type vehicle. When we see van type culture in India.?
Instead of 4 meter regulation there should be a kei car like sub 3.5m EV category which gets the least taxes. Hope that replaces the unsafe & ugly autos in our cities.
There should be a kit for converting existing diesels to hybrids. The fuel-efficiency of petrol hybrids is poor, as compared to even a conventional diesel.
What are your thoughts on sub-4m rule relaxed to sub-4.2m? It will make cars even more safer by allowing carmakers to have longer front and rear overhangs without compromising or squeezing cabin. I always why are EVs not using the advantage of may be a gearbox like CVT or whatever to extend the range.... Do understand EVs dont need gearbox due to torque upfront...but gearbox will help extwnd range with a higher ration gears right???
Toyota's Legendary Landcruiser which is a niche offering by the company and has been one of their best selling vehicles used in overlanding expeditions across the world...Can we expect to see more affordable versions based Ladder on frame competing with the likes of Thar..I know we Indians like typical soft raoders called SUVs which are feature packed but don't offer the capability of a true overlander/offroader
I want to know who can provide classic car insurance right now I have a HONDA CITY VTEC 2001 No insurance provider is ready to offer me comprehensive insurance
In NCR, I don't see the point of paying extra for hybrids for a meagre increment in mileage. Hybrids will be penalized and not allowed to run after 15 years. They won't be exempted from odd even if at it comes again in future. I own a CNG car. Although it got exemption during the odd even, I will forced to sell it next year when it completes 15 year. This 15 year rule is yet another stupid rule by governments which has been implemented without brains and just for profits in the name of preventing air pollution.
Sub4m rule should be immediately scrapped. It may be relevant in the past. With that rule we are forced to make non standard vehicles highly prone for accidents and discomfort. .
Hybrids are a fool's errand, if we run behind hybrids 20 years after the prius , think of where electrics will be in 20 years with what china is doing today!
Agreed, there's a lack of vision, both in the West and India. Chinese companies (or the govt. who owned and subsidized them) was willing to take huge losses on electric vehicles for years to stimulate the market. Meanwhile, in the US, the Fords and the GMs are already scaling back production after ONE year of bad sales. And India seems to have given up after just the slightest dip in demand, with hybrids now becoming a buzzword of sorts. A hybrid is inherently less efficient than an EV, even a plug-in hybrid still had to carry around that engine with it, space that could've been for more batteries or storage. It's a stop gap solution for the EV transition when the world leaders embraced it.
Hybrid is ok for those brands which already have hybrid tech No sense for Indian/korean mfgs to leave ev RnD and shift those investments to hybrid In any case ev is ultimate future. Hybrid still uses fuel and pollutes in cities. Still makes AQI worse.
In my area the municipality has dug out road months ago still incomplete, I have to park bike and car on road, how can I charge if I buy an ev next time ? 😂😂😂
Hi, what is VW strategy behind launching the VW Golf GTI in India for 40lakhs in August 2025? Should Mumbai Police also buy EV's to catch potential bank robbers?
What is stopping car makers to make an affordable two seater car like Renaut's Twizy types to come to the market. Even a 200cc-300cc bike engine will suffice for those models. EVs Not feasible as they will be expensive. Manufacturers can develop such cars especially for cities. Those are buying two wheelers can opt for these if priced around 2-2.5 lakhs. It will save them from Rains n all while being as less space taking as a scooter or a bike. I believe manufacturers know this but dont want this trend to start. Why is it that ?
Reason for buying SUV is they don't want loose car bumbers in bad roads with unexpected deep potholes and humps, due to bad aparture and departure angles of Sedan...😂😂😂😂😂
Please add this Why suzuki can't make a safe car for common man When they are selling over 1lac vehicle per month, Can't they just make a single safe platform
i think if this hybrid thing takes off then suzuki will make safe cars because the hybrid will take care of the mileage than the thin sheet metal they use for weight reduction to achieve the same. case in point, the new Dzire
Mahindra nomenclature is a khichdi! 😂 Build bad roads => consumers will get SUVs => more taxes for our modern-day kings/overlords/rulers (euphemism = Government)! 😂 Great tidbits to enhance one's automotive knowledge (e.g. monocoque; diesel hybrid; old Defender; Alto struggling in the current milieu etc.) as always.
Fun fact: Indians love diesel electric hybrid engines but rarely notice it. Its used by a company called Indian Railways to move lakhs of people around.
Is there a discussion to scrap the sub 4 meter rule in the Indian market. This is one of the worst policy decision babus made in Indian automotive history. Our cars can’t compete in global markets due to this stupid rule.

Hi Hormazd ...
why is it that we don't see small EVs in India except Tiago ev , every manufacturer is launching its EV in 20 lacs ballpark ?
Can Electrification save the small car segment in India like once tata did nano ev for ola or an Alto ev.
Battery density is not high enough YET.. battery needs space and weight
Is Suzuki considering three door Jimny for India? They should have released Three Door version rather than ugly five door one. Suzuki meddled with the good looking original design which has absolutely no issues.
Why is there a price hike in almost all automobile companies?
creta or syros why these models doesn't come in 4x4 or awd.....we dont get too many option in 4x4 sub4....
Why does any other company launch a competitor to the eartiga/xl6 or Ecco type of MPV in last 6 years with reference of vfm type vehicle. Kia only has carens with mix of mpv/suv type vehicle. When we see van type culture in India.?
Why no pure performance car under 4 meter?
Instead of 4 meter regulation there should be a kei car like sub 3.5m EV category which gets the least taxes. Hope that replaces the unsafe & ugly autos in our cities.
Why can't the OEM's have a gear box manufacturing facility in India?
There should be a kit for converting existing diesels to hybrids. The fuel-efficiency of petrol hybrids is poor, as compared to even a conventional diesel.
No space to put battery and electronics unless vehicle was designed as such
Good idea😅
Haha, would you like a personal locomotive 🚂
awesome
Why Maruti is not coming with dual CNG cylinder technology to maruti cars
Buyer's can't afford premium cars, buyers can easily avail loan to purchase premium cars
Sub 4m category was brought in to exclude most cars and "protect" Maruti.
When in 2025 are electronics fully be 5G Chip implemented
I always why are EVs not using the advantage of may be a gearbox like CVT or whatever to extend the range.... Do understand EVs dont need gearbox due to torque upfront...but gearbox will help extwnd range with a higher ration gears right???
Toyota's Legendary Landcruiser which is a niche offering by the company and has been one of their best selling vehicles used in overlanding expeditions across the world...Can
we expect to see more affordable versions based Ladder on frame competing with the likes of Thar..I know we Indians like typical soft raoders called SUVs which are feature packed but don't offer the capability of a true overlander/offroader
I want to know who can provide classic car insurance
right now I have a HONDA CITY VTEC 2001
No insurance provider is ready to offer me comprehensive insurance
Sir Toyota has Diesel Hybrid Technology in upcoming Fortuner
Dear Autocar, Is there any chance that maruti suzuki will bring back the DDIS engine....?
No, Suzuki is done with diesel
Peugeot bought the Ambassador name.
I would like to know as to what are they doing.
They bought the name for 80 crore.
Nothing. They are just sleeping.
Sub 4 meter rule should go now.
Why is ERTIGA not going Electric/Hybrid side when XL6 is very poor performer and vice-versa?
Hybrid is ok for those brands which already have hybrid tech
No sense for Indian/korean mfgs to leave ev RnD and shift those investments to hybrid
In any case ev is ultimate future. Hybrid still uses fuel and pollutes in cities. Still makes AQI worse.
It doesn't take a genius to make an EV, look at TATA for example. No matter what you buy Hybrid or EV China is getting richer
In my area the municipality has dug out road months ago still incomplete, I have to park bike and car on road, how can I charge if I buy an ev next time ? 😂😂😂
@@Yeti_111if you can park a car, you can charge it. Street charging will be possible in india soon enough just like other countries have
Hi, what is VW strategy behind launching the VW Golf GTI in India for 40lakhs in August 2025? Should Mumbai Police also buy EV's to catch potential bank robbers?
Why electric and cng car no possibility
its not customers getting rich, its just regulations, there are customers for 3lakh car, they are going to used car market now, no new car choice
I think Alto and K10 customers are going for Espresso or used Wagon R
Why MG TATA not launching hybrids??
Because they are betting on electric. Same case with Mahindra as well.
At the end of day everything boils down to Volumes... Cos are here to make money and not just showcase their products
Toyota is working on diesel hybrid in fortuner
Channels like auto are responsible for calling these jacked up hatches as SUV playing to manufacturer’s tune!
@11.12 if Brezza is allowed 1500 cc engine under sub four meters rule, why not Kylaq? No logic.
Reason for buying SUV is they don't want loose car bumbers in bad roads with unexpected deep potholes and humps, due to bad aparture and departure angles of Sedan...😂😂😂😂😂
I feel that these pressed steel monocoq are more rust prone than the ladder frame.
Used car market evolves and nimmi killed it with 18%gst😂😂😂😂
Only applicable for registered reseller
Hybrids and plug in hybrid are better than total electric
From my pov electric cars are worthless
Hilux vs vcross the review which nobody wants to do in India😂😂e😂😂
Please add this
Why suzuki can't make a safe car for common man
When they are selling over 1lac vehicle per month,
Can't they just make a single safe platform
i think if this hybrid thing takes off then suzuki will make safe cars because the hybrid will take care of the mileage than the thin sheet metal they use for weight reduction to achieve the same. case in point, the new Dzire
They already did it right?. Suzuki Dzire is 5 star rated in GNCAP.
Just in time
👍🏽
Mahindra nomenclature is a khichdi! 😂
Build bad roads => consumers will get SUVs => more taxes for our modern-day kings/overlords/rulers (euphemism = Government)! 😂
Great tidbits to enhance one's automotive knowledge (e.g. monocoque; diesel hybrid; old Defender; Alto struggling in the current milieu etc.) as always.
10-13 lakh on road ev in 2025 othet than tata motors? Not tata because of poor reliability and sevice
