The govt shouldn't be this harsh with new policies like 10 year ban and 15 year ban. Look at USA. The average age of car is 14. Here it's just 4! Supporting environment with more lithium mining and destroying perfect cars because they are old. Sounds fantastic
They have to benefit auto company who give money to party funds ,for a developing country like india 15 yr and 10 yr rule is irresponsible govt sign ,there could be strict fitness norms,on the contrary there are vehicles who even have registered running on the road two stoke engines
Actually the Indian government has always been quite hostile to the auto industry. High taxes, rarely any benefits and the whole BS6 fiasco. Our government doesn’t not like the car companies at all. 😂😂
I have driven many diesel cars. S-Cross 1.3 diesel, Xcent 1.1 diesel, Verna 1.6 diesel, Etios 1.4 diesel, Beat 954cc diesel, Duster and Fluence 1.5 diesel. Very impressive diesel engines. Really loved the kick in the mid range as it cross 2000 rpm, and then there is no one stopping. That's what diesel were.
It's simply coz of Gadkari arm twisting Suzuki on pushing for petrol,,, So that ethanol blend can take over. And ethanol comes from the sugar mills... Just connect the dots😊
Maruti never produced any diesel engines, maruti sourced diesel engines from FIAT. Due to BS6 norms FIAT stopped developing MJD diesels engines as a result Maruti has to stop selling Diesel cars.
There sits a Suzuki Swift Dzire VDI Diesel 2009 model car at my home which's still in use & we haven't given up yet just because of its mileage, comfort in long rides, and strong body compared to present Maruti Suzuki cars. It still gives us an average of 27-28 kms/litre.
I have two diesel cars TUCSON and SCORPIO N models...i am a true fan of DIESELS ENGINES plz make a podcast on DIESELS ENGINES future especially in luxury segment...
Tata actually has small capacity diesel engine like in Nexon. They should introduce the same in Tiago and tigor this vl boost sales of both the low selling models since Taxi Fleets would be interested for the same
Since BS6 norms a lot of companies have stopped the diesel. Do you feel that DPF is also a major issue ? I have faced a huge problem with the Sonet Diesel DPF !! Request you to have a discussion on this topic as well.
Swift dzire 2012 diseal ,212000 km just going strong excellent engine. Not even one breakdown. Wanted to buy new Swift diesel but disappointed as Maruti stopped diseal.
Sorabjee Sir I am watching this show since long time and numerous occasions I have overviewed magazines which had its big big articles articulated by you Sir your experience in the Indian automobile market is vast and you have catered from one sequential to another story which has been hot topic and added toppins on it Sir I am a big fan of your editing and narrations ❤️🌹
Even when Esteem diesel was officially not available, fleet owners would shoehorn diesels into the Esteems and older Maruti 1000s and run them for millions of kilometres.
Honda idtec was a gem but for its noise, mine brv diesel style edition vx 2018 driven 90000kms without any major haul with minimal turbo lag and great city drive. Love they had continued with idtec
NO, it didn't. Jimny is an enthusiasts vehicle & it should have been launched as a 3 door and not marketed as a practical SUV. After initial hype its mostly enthusiasts that are buying one. Globally Jimny keeps getting some special editions, India too should have gotten those too so as to keep it fresh in consumers mind.
I am convinced that strong hybrids like in the lexus is the way to go. Can you imagine its fuel consumption to be 5,5 litre per 100km with its heavy weight, extremely nice acceleration and rear wheel drive. That is riding on diesel territory with a heavy car, good performing ice with hybrid and rear wheel driven. Thank you Toyota. The electrical or battery cars are not ready yet, too many issues from fires, charging infrastructure, reliability, doubtful winter range, bad heating in cold climate etc.
What an in-depth deep dive insight! No wonder why Maruti isn't pulling sales chart as before as Tata Punch clearly takes the top honor in the past couple of months!
Loved the conversation!! It was really enriching and enlightening for true petrol heads!! Just amazed by the breadth of Knowledge Hormazd possess!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!
Hormazd sir and autocar india team , Please keep recording these videos as an archive. Insights like these make us love cars even more. I personally enjoy hearing the stories of how some cars came to be made.
I have a ciaz 1.5 ddis, have driven it close to 80k. It is an absolute power n silent engine with a 6 speed gearbox, giving me a great mileage of 20-22kmph
The diesel engine exhaust gases being lean in nature do not tend to have high temperatures. The exhaust temperatures of about 800 deg. C is typical of petrol engine exhausts. The exhaust from diesel engines is between 300 to 500 deg. C.
Thank for the detailed and insightful review of the Maruti diesel cars. My six year old s cross shvs still gives me 16.5 kmpl. Will you recommend their petrol shvs now ? Or there are other good diesel cars? No one seems to make a sub 1.5 litre diesel car ? Maruti discontinued their celero diesel shortly after launching it
I had talked with a fiat employee He said that " tata where there is a need for a diesel engine but their sales was low and Maruti was very confident about no need of diesel engines but in talks with fiat to be continued ahead but they were delayed and they dismantled the whole process by that time " I think they should ciaz CNG It will be first in the segment and they don't need to do it in r/d expenditure.
This !! Is the much needed video for the clarification on maruti diesel. Alas! This was an anticipated Diesel engine in this Diesel less era. Thanks to Autocar for bringing such informative video
The new hybrid will be a diesel alternative, and I don't think itl be powerful but will be have great fuel efficiency. Tagged with swift and baleno would move that much volumes as I guess the price delta would be 1.5 lacs. But would work with the fronx as it is the turbo petrol doesn't do good sales number.
Was the 1500 diesel created by increasing the displacement of the 1.3 Multijet? If yes, it might look good on the (designing) board but not too great on the road, because doing that would be at the cost of sacrificing the tolerance levels that Fiat had built into the 1.3 Multijet. A total compromise at the cost of the user . They could have adapted the K9K from Renault.
Sorabjee sir ,very interesting and informative interview, thanks for sharing the reasons why maruti ended up their diesels. But as you said ,the integrated manifold is the main culprit then is there any way they just make a re-engineering and control coolent flow to stop cooling of exhaust gases. Just a thought.
Among the motive power in sizable automobile no any option available other than diesel and if we can intigrate some hybrid stuff m8lage figure would be unbeatable.
I don't see a major flaw for a manufacturer having masses like Suzuki. The Exhaust gases temprature should rise upto 300 deg C for effective regeneration in DPF . And electrical heating OR hot coolant can be pumped in downstream of exhaust system by adding a passage jacket . Though Dosing could be a expensive solution. MSIL should definitely rethink in it.
i remember in 2007 the original Grand Vitara debuted, it lacked diesel as an option but it was available in Europe and i was disappointed too and it didn't do well in our market because lack of an diesel engine otherwise it was a very Capable SUV.
Great discussion as always! Learnt the story about Suzuki and it's divorce with Diesel engines :) Would love to hear more about Diesel engines in general, how the BS6 norms are now being met? What's the role DEF liquid plays etc.
Let me tell you as per my experience, the Fiat 4-Cylinder, 1.3L Turbo Diesel (BS4) Engine is the best possible engineering at that time. Very refined, better mileage to Power ratio, Reliability.
They could have just blocked the specific water jackets going around the exhaust manifolds and keep the rest of them open. Or they could have reduced the size of the water jackets so that less water / coolant travels through the jackets and less heat gets exchanged through the manifolds. That would have made the exhaust gases retain the heat and it would have solved the problem. Not as expensive as redesigning the whole cylinder head, I imagine.
Suzuki stumbled with diesels because they never built diesel engines themselves, they outsourced them, except the 2 cylinder from the celerio and the e15a.......
Both of you, I would like you to talk about Bolero. It is an engineering marvel. Uttrakhand, Rajasthan, Shimla Ooty northeast, Kerala Andaman a very practical solution. .
Maruti should bring back their diesel engines even in this day and age. EVs are a long way away. The other option is hybrids and i want to check out their series hybrids
@autocarindia , a word on how Maruti acquired the licence for 1.6 Ddis for S cross when Fiat India had a option of using in Linea , and other Multijets like 2.0 in next podcast please 😊
Very informative one. Thanks for sharing these details. The extra premium that they are charging on hybrids are way too much!! A diesel would have been more better and cheaper options.
Main point missed was the price difference / gap between petrol and diesel has reduced significantly in the past 4-5 years. So there was no advantage for Maruti Suzuki in investing in Diesel engines with lastest BS6 and BS6.2 emission norms.
My friend owned a Datsun brand car 4 years ago, he had an option of going for Maruti. But I am wondering now, Why happened to Datsun. Indians dont know about the legacy of Datsun brand. Since you both are auto journalist, I am sure you can really make an informative podcast on Datsun. Both Maruti and Datsun are people carrier or is there any thing more to it ?? Maruti thought people will move away from diesels and get into petrol if they give efficient petrols..Thats why they introduced dualjet engine in 2019 that was bs 6 ready..But that engine lacks initial punch and is not rev friendly like old K series. It also lacks the torque rush of diesels. Now the dualjet is getting replaced by 3 cylinder Z series..So literally its 3 engines that bite the dust in Maruti during past 4 years due to emission and other norms..The E 15,k series, F series..
I think Maruti's strategy post 2020 is a bit confusing. Their brilliant petrol engines became lethargic especially the K15c due to efficiency reasons due to lack of diesels. Now the Z12e in the Swift which I personally feel is not a good change from the K12N. Also the pricing by Maruti these days is on the higher side a recent example being Jimny and new Swift 2 of the Suzuki global icons.

Can you create a story on what happened to Toyota's 1.5L diesel?
Ford 1.5 Tdci was another underrated gem of a Diesel engine
The govt shouldn't be this harsh with new policies like 10 year ban and 15 year ban. Look at USA. The average age of car is 14. Here it's just 4! Supporting environment with more lithium mining and destroying perfect cars because they are old. Sounds fantastic

15year ban+scrapping industry- they just want to boost auto sales and collect more revenue at the cost of environment and our money.
Actually the Indian government has always been quite hostile to the auto industry. High taxes, rarely any benefits and the whole BS6 fiasco. Our government doesn’t not like the car companies at all. 😂😂
I saw Zen diesel 9 yrs back when I was in Berhampur Odisha, and later got to know it was sourced from Peugeot.
It was called TUD5 engine
Ritz 1.3 Diesel is a pocket rocket. I still drive my 2011 Ritz!
We own Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire VDI 2008 1.3 DDIS 2,40,150/- kms still going strong love diesel.
Top end is weak lol.
The 1.6 diesel from Hyundai was just something else.... Perhaps the best diesel ever offered for a car between 10-15 lakh
The Skoda Rapid Diesel (1.6 L) with 103 bhp power and 250 nm torque has been quite a good engine notwithstanding its fuel injector problems.
Wish I could drive a Diesel one day, I have only owned and driven petrol cars in my life.......
@@zacthegamer6145 Who sayd top end is weak. Mr idiot, there are diesels which can rev 5000rpm easily...
It's simply coz of Gadkari arm twisting Suzuki on pushing for petrol,,, So that ethanol blend can take over. And ethanol comes from the sugar mills... Just connect the dots😊
Then I should consider myself to be very lucky one to opt Scross 1.6 at right time in 2017. I am still enjoying the beast to fullest.
Maruti never produced any diesel engines, maruti sourced diesel engines from FIAT. Due to BS6 norms FIAT stopped developing MJD diesels engines as a result Maruti has to stop selling Diesel cars.

Luxury and utility it'll definitely stay for many more years atleast in India
I have 2018 Tucson petrol
Ritz Vdi(2009 to 2019) drove around 124587 kms to 2019 Brezza Vdi currently using love the DDIS refinement only lack is the 6th gear
Kindly do a podcast on Honda’s turbo IVTEC dilemma in India
Tata actually has small capacity diesel engine like in Nexon. They should introduce the same in Tiago and tigor this vl boost sales of both the low selling models since Taxi Fleets would be interested for the same
Diesel cars are fun to drive..the best diesel engine now available in c segment is creta and seltos .. ultimate silent beast
Since BS6 norms a lot of companies have stopped the diesel. Do you feel that DPF is also a major issue ? I have faced a huge problem with the Sonet Diesel DPF !! Request you to have a discussion on this topic as well.

Legends will appreciate 1.6 Scross
It flopped in India and Hyundai 1.6 and vw 1.5 are miles better.
Stop praising this failed product, there was a reason this failed
23:38 24:01 24:08 Excellent information
Even when Esteem diesel was officially not available, fleet owners would shoehorn diesels into the Esteems and older Maruti 1000s and run them for millions of kilometres.
Proud owner of. ertiga 2019 diesel, gem of an engine and feels better than petrol.
I like your videos for having unique way of presentation. No nonsense, no copy, no repetition. Useful videos.
Honda idtec was a gem but for its noise, mine brv diesel style edition vx 2018 driven 90000kms without any major haul with minimal turbo lag and great city drive. Love they had continued with idtec
I still uses 2014 swift dzure diesel, one of the last multijet models

Great Insight into Maruti & Diesel 👍 Hoping For A Episode on " Cost of Hybrid / Strong Hybrid " with a Petrol Engine & Maintaince for a Long Run
The reason.. i still kept my maruti 1.3L 4 cylinder turbo charged diesel.. ❤❤
I remember 2013 Swift DZire VDi which my father's friend used to have, still missing that legend 😢
Enjoying their DDIS engine still

Ritz ,swift, scross, brezza, ciaz these ddis engines were reliable fun to drive easy to maintain but sadly there is no more ddis 😢
DDiS was really masterpiece,
Kindly do a detail discussion on the ICE engines of the TATA Motors and there upcoming engines.
What an in-depth deep dive insight! No wonder why Maruti isn't pulling sales chart as before as Tata Punch clearly takes the top honor in the past couple of months!
DPF issues and AD Blue issues precisely too many complaints couldnt rectify as such hence need for re-engineering.
Loved the conversation!! It was really enriching and enlightening for true petrol heads!! Just amazed by the breadth of Knowledge Hormazd possess!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!

For me it is the best automotive podcast so far.
I have seltos diesel imt, on highway I get 23 to 24 kmpl ,but dpf is a headache
Kudos to the production team to arrange the Maruti Diesel Block on table
Lot of thanks for this video, team Autocar😍
I just booked XUV 3X0 diesel manual....it is safe to say i can drive it peacefully for next 12-15years without any trouble from government
I have a dzire 2017 diesel which is very efficient. Which we never get again in future.vitara diesel would have been blockbuster for maruti
To cover up an engineering bug, they spread a beautiful lie that Diesel cars are threat to lives starting from 2020 itself 😅 “Sales Team😵💫”
I spotted Ignis diesel the other day.. DDIS. Surprised they had Ignis diesel too. Interesting
Is Mahindra 3xo the reason for remembering the diesels again
Really loving des podcasts...
I have the S cross 1.6 ddis...
Do i need to say more
Can we all appreciate the mike place stand placed inside a valve head(of the 1.3l MJD I guess).
Please podcast of VW TDi..if it is coming back ?
Owing swift vdi 2014 clocked 1.2 L kilometres no issues in engine. DDIS
still a prowd owner of 1.5 ddis ertiga :)
Somebody remembers a Hundai Accent having a Peugeot 1.5 diesel TUD 5 before getting their first crdi.
Excellent analysis with real engine block. I really look forward to this pod cast to cover many more technical subjects..this is quality content.
Thank for the detailed and insightful review of the Maruti diesel cars. My six year old s cross shvs still gives me 16.5 kmpl. Will you recommend their petrol shvs now ? Emission norms make it extremely difficult to make smaller diesel engines
Minimum 1.5 l is needed
I had talked with a fiat employee
He said that " tata where there is a need for a diesel engine but their sales was low and Maruti was very confident about no need of diesel engines but in talks with fiat to be continued ahead but they were delayed and they dismantled the whole process by that time "
I think they should ciaz CNG
It will be first in the segment and they don't need to do it in r/d expenditure.
This !! Is the much needed video for the clarification on maruti diesel. Alas! This was an anticipated Diesel engine in this Diesel less era. Thanks to Autocar for bringing such informative video
I think Maruti made the decision too early to quit the diesels ,,,, because it's rivals Mahindra and Tata are still going for diesels,,,,,
The new hybrid will be a diesel alternative, and I don't think itl be powerful but will be have great fuel efficiency. Tagged with swift and baleno would move that much volumes as I guess the price delta would be 1.5 lacs. But would work with the fronx as it is the turbo petrol doesn't do good sales number.
Always wandered why?? Finally came to know the reason. Thanks a lot autocar

No, Maruti’s in-house diesel had no link with the Fiat engine
Great conversation and learning’s from this podcast.
very well explained. Thanks!
Insightful!
India needs great wall motors in india this will push indian automakers to work more and give better cars at better prices
Podcast on engines of Mahindra cars
Best wishes for another informative podcast cast. Wish you all the success.
Among the motive power in sizable automobile no any option available other than diesel and if we can intigrate some hybrid stuff m8lage figure would be unbeatable.
Anyone remember 1.6DDIS fiat in S cross 🫀🫀❤️
I don't see a major flaw for a manufacturer having masses like Suzuki. The Exhaust gases temprature should rise upto 300 deg C for effective regeneration in DPF . Love these podcasts!
I hope to get comback from ford with the 1.5 lt tdci unit. Just bought i20 nline and thrust is missing.😊
Watch their ford comeback podcast for more clarity...no major plans for ICE..
Old innovas engine ❤.... Please make a video on that

@autocarindia , a word on how Maruti acquired the licence for 1.6 Ddis for S cross when Fiat India had a option of using in Linea , and other Multijets like 2.0 in next podcast please 😊
When were Maruti making diesel engines? The last time I heard, these engines were Fiat sourced 1.3 Multi jets.
I still drive diesel swift from last 14 years . And will drive till my Last breath ❤
The power in BS6 diesels is also very poor, they have problem while accelerating compared to BS4s
This is so fascinating
Good One 👍 Can EV Battery Swapping is A Game Changing Pratical 💡 Idea ( Nio a Chinese Ev Company )
Looking forward for next podcast
Maruti thought people will move away from diesels and get into petrol if they give efficient petrols..Thats why they introduced dualjet engine in 2019 that was bs 6 ready..But that engine lacks initial punch and is not rev friendly like old K series. It also lacks the torque rush of diesels. 1.6 Diesel in the SCross 🥺 what went wrong there? Can you cover that also in some other podcast?
I think Maruti's strategy post 2020 is a bit confusing. Their brilliant petrol engines became lethargic especially the K15c due to efficiency reasons due to lack of diesels. Now the Z12e in the Swift which I personally feel is not a good change from the K12N. Also the pricing by Maruti these days is on the higher side a recent example being Jimny and new Swift 2 of the Suzuki global icons.
