I didn't feel a desire to collect an entire wave of modern Lego in a long time but now it's here and while it's expensive, I'm looking forward to it.
I think it's partially caused by my fond memories of the five Mars Mission sets I had as I kid. I spent a lot of time playing with them and modifying them. It was a great time. I even bought two orange blankets with my limited pocket money to be able to have my own Mars terrain to go with the Lego sets.

I already intended to buy this set, I think it's one of Legos best flying machines ever, it's sleek; fairly sizable; has cool features and design, and looks great from every angle except the bottom.
Your modifications really elevate it though; it uses easily obtained parts, and the build techniques are fairly simple. It's appearance is so good, it wouldn't even be too out of place among other MOCs.
Now I think all get a couple and make a little squadron with them.
Thanks for showing off your techniques :3

This is what Lego is really all about. Some people get so carried away thinking they’re just display models you have to put together, but they’re so much more. You can customize them and build upon them and even take them apart completely and build something new. No other model kits allow you to really do that so easily.
When you’re willing to experiment and be creative there really are infinite possibilities with Lego, and not many other toys can really achieve that.

    • @ericlandreneau5855
      @ericlandreneau5855  9 месяцев назад +2

Spot on. I encourage everyone to knock their collectibles off the shelf (the individual pieces will survive because Lego is quality [except brittle gold, brown and dark red. Gotta be careful with those]) and invent new things.

  • @arghjayem

05:09 totally agree man! Having gotten back into LEGO as an AFOL, I initially only built sets. Then I moved on to building other people’s alternative builds of sets…then I started modifying sets myself and adapting them to what I wanted them to be! Good example is the Batman Mask set. I loved the idea but not the execution. So I modified it. First by adding a mouth so it’s not just a mask. Then I completely modded the set, turning it from a generic looking Batman with a mouth- a sort of disembodied head- to making it into a specific Batman look. I went for the Batman Beyond version, the Terry Mcginnis batman. So the added mouth became black and modified to look more like the Beyond Batman. As well as extending and slimming down the ears!
I’m now onto building original MOCs!

Nice landing gear mod. Also I might have to copy the bottom part of the main engine. :D I did add some space blasters on mine, because there are entirely too many dangerous 1990s aliens around here to be flying around unarmed. Plus, this set was designed with so many cool connection points for things to be added on... Also I totally agree: Lego is for creating. It's for taking what's been made, and making something new out of it.
Also also, when I saw this set, I thought "I must have one." When I got one and built it, I thought "I must have six."

Biggest yet simplest change I made was to remove the light blue piece from the top of the flight pack and attach it to the underside of the power pack. I also gave the pilot some minifig accessories and placed them in the cockpit with an extra cushion (the spare grey semi circle) I put the orange one on the nose for a stronger canopy connection and cool look...

As for people shying away from building, this is also partially because Lego also focuses heavily on releasing more collector's editions, like the Star Wars helmets and a lot more. I wanted to do that too, but couldn't figure out a good place for it. On or under a wing would look chunky and awkward, break the sleek style of the ship. You could remove the whole engine flaring mechanism to make a bay to stick it in, but that mechanism is fun! Removing it would be lame. Nowhere else on the fuselage to put it where it wouldn't look "stuck on".
Go the limo route: stretch the build, maybe 4 studs longer, to make a storage bay behind the cockpit. Like an astromech droid on an X-wing.

If you put the model down on a surface and press the button, it won't work if the lower part of the thruster is there; it'll hit whatever surface the toy is on. Sure, most kids will pick it up and swoosh it around, so no problem. But kids with one hand or other disabilities wouldn't be able to play with the toy. That's my theory.

@@ericlandreneau5855 I actually had planned to make the expandable engine upgrade you made. So after seeing yours, I did the landing gear and I wanted to do the thrusters as well. But I'm debating on making a forward landing gear or sensor package similar but different from yours. Still not sure yet. So we'll see what I decide in the future.

For a company whose motto is "Only the Best is Good Enough" selling a set with only the upper half of a spaceship.... they could have added at least 0.2 USD worth of tiles to smooth it out.

lego is a building system not a display system. these days every body rants at lego products. adults complain about stickers and other stuff.
first of all we are talking about toys for kids. kids like to craft new stuff they want a special piece and they can't use it because it's a printed tile.
of courese i don't like stickers but how about warhammer? you need to paint them. how about scale modelling? you need to paint them and put some waterslide decal paper stickers to it.
so tell me what is the problem?

Wow, you put a lot of work into that. I'm sure people will appreciate it.
The dark grey antenna is a screwdriver piece. Older design, not the current mold for screwdrivers.
I'm not sure what the goblet thing is you note in light grey. Part of the antennas under the wings? If so, those are telescopes, #64644
