    I am a believer in water flow right from the start. The breeding boxes with an air driven water supply give continuous water changes. I have also been deliberately using very established dirty algae covered breeding boxes with a ton of old leaf litter old rocks and shrimp etc and getting very acceptable hatch rates . I have not tried a sterile container at the same time as a cross reference .

    • @DanielKeepingFish

      Sounds like a solid method to me bud. I have the Marina hang on breeder box that I love. I was thinking about casual hobbyists who wouldn't have those kind of things around and found they have eggs when I put this together.
      Saying that, as with so many things in our hobby there are often many ways of doing things and it is super interesting to experiment with each and see what works best or that we like best.

    My albino pair ( and now a bronze male who came with a new tank ) are resulting in eggs every seven days! But I’m buggered if I can keep them alive past four weeks after hatching...get a few weeks in then they just start dying 😞

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +3

      Oh I'm sorry to hear that.
      Just in terms of suggestions to try to help make sure your water is kept clean and they are eating enough. Small often feedings is better for fry so small amounts of your chosen fry food four times a day is ideal if that's possible and removing any uneaten food after a while if you can. You can syphon out uneaten food with a piece of air tube so you can be careful what you are removing.
      Also I find giving them plenty of moss helps. They can graze on micro organisms from within it and use it for cover. It helps maintain the water quality too.
      I hope that is some help to you.

    • @DanielKeepingFish

      Generally in a community tank most eggs will get picked off either through predation or curiosity although some may scrape through. Best to remove them to another tank/breeder box or net/takeaway container/etc until they hatch and put on a bit of size if you're wanting to guarantee success.

      Dear Daniel:
      I’ve been struggling to keep white cloud fry alive for some time. I recently purchased vinegar eels. Last Thursday, I noticed a free-swimming white cloud fry in my, 10-gallon bedroom tank (where I currently have 7 adults). I transferred the fry to the 10-gallon, cherry shrimp tank I recently set up from substrate, décor, plants and water in my, 29-gallon tank (which sprang a leak and had to be trashed). Since then, I’ve offered vinegar eels to the single fry, each day. It was still doing fine, as of last night. I believe it finds other, minute organisms to consume.
      ruclips.net/video/Mtk5MESBYfM/видео.html
      Perhaps I’ll give microworms a go, at some point. I hear that they are smaller and more nutritious than vinegar eels (though more trouble to culture).
      Thank you for your, continued correspondence and encouragement.
      Sincerely,
      Brinegar

    I found a great way to water change the fry tub.
    Get a length of air line.
    Put an airstone on one end.
    Put the airstone in the tub and start a syphon into a jug.
    Keeps the fry completely safe and the water doesn't drain out too fast.
    Then put a sponge in the tub and poor the fresh water onto the sponge. That way, there's no current.
    Since I've been doing this, I'm getting hundreds of fry survive, including Corys, bettas, plecos and rams. 👍

      Thanks very much.
      Breeding, no problem, keeping the eggs till they hatch... I have 100 Whiteclouds in that 6ft tank with other tank mates. The eggs don't last too long.
      I have bred them before. Cooler temp, good food and feathery plants or moss all helps. The males chase the females into the plants to scatter and fertilise the eggs. Sometimes they eat the eggs and fry, sometimes they don't. To increase the chances of survival getting them to scatter over stones or marbles helps as the fry can develop down in between them in safety.
      I may try to do a Whitecloud breeding video at some point. I'm working on one about breeding Peacock Gudgeon just now. I have some eggs about to hatch so hopefully I can raise them safely and get a video out about that.

    I see you got white clouds I feel like breeding and get a big big school going, but every video I see they behave differently....do you feel they directionally school more, or they just hang out together like guppies? maybe is something to do with number or water flow?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад

      No definitely not directional schoolers. More hang out in a cloud together.
      They like to spawn in feathery stem plants like Limnophila Sessiliflora or you could try a spawning mop. They prefer cooler temps. Feed them good food and the likes of live food like baby brine shrimp and that will help get them in the mood.

    Do you keep your cories on gravel only? They need sand to forage through. They filter the sand through their gills. They will damage their mouths when you keep them on gravel🙈 I love your explanation on the breeding though! I have the Venezuela Black too, most of the, are young still but i hope they will breed! I also have a group of Albino Cories. Awesome fish!

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад

      They really are great fish hey?
      I've kept lots and lots of them over the years. Sand is definitely best for them but gravel can be fine too as long as it's small, rounded, smooth gravel. The important thing is that there are no sharp edges or rough surfaces that they can damage their barbells on. That can lead to injury and infection but if the gravel is safe for them they can forage about in it without harm.
      Hope you get yours breeding too. Such a rewarding experience. Enjoy your Cories!

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  3 года назад

      I'm sure it could happen, they're pretty active so they could nudge into a egg and get it stuck to them I suppose.
      Just make sure it's not something more nasty like a fungal infection or ich.
      Hope not and it's just a random face egg!

  • @GLP_Aquatics

    This is a great, short and fully packed with the essentials vid, great upload. I had Sterbai’s spawn recently. I followed your guidance (apart from the meth blue or almond leaves). Out of about 20 eggs after 3 days I had 6 looking great for hatching but checking them for a morning water change. no movement in some of the eggs and 4/5 out or partially out and not moving at all, is that usual during hatching? I have a feeling that perhaps the air stone pump pressure was too high and upset the eggs too much or maybe it’s just Mother Nature. The danios would have eaten these in the community tank if I hadn’t intervened but still a tad disappointed that not even one seems to have made it... 😏. Any guidance greatly appreciated

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +1

      Yeah I wouldn't be expecting them too move too much at that stage or even when they first hatch. They'll be putting all the energy they can into developing and growing.
      I hope that's what you're seeing from your description I think it is. Hopefully you'll raise a few fry out of that batch then and it'll give you a bit more experience and confidence for the next round. So exciting raising them. Hope it's working out for you and the video was helpful.

    • @GLP_Aquatics
      @GLP_Aquatics 4 года назад +1

      Cheers, your video was super helpful and best I have found on the subject. Not sure how long to leave them in the tub after they have hatched before going to a breeder box or grow out tank.
      2 of the fry survived and they laid more eggs.
      Decided to move them (new eggs and the 2 surviving fry) to a half filled 30L with a well established boys SF100 small sponge filter and a little java moss.
      Second batch eggs stuck to the java moss and fungi grew on them... all goners, a rookie mistake I will stick to your idea for hatching (air stone only, water changes will probs help).
      I changed out the java moss in the grow out for 3 small moss balls. On a water change.
      3rd batch of eggs in the community (I have decided to take them out as soon as I notice as the Zebra danios (which are being removed from show tank after newer fish pass quarantine) eat them. I’d rather get 10 eggs than them lay 30 but I get none.
      On the 3rd batch egg hunt I found 2 mature eggs (from the second batch) so maybe they shall survive even though I massacred their compadres with a java moss attempt.
      Doing about a litre daily water changes on the grow out for the fry. And feeding baby brine and hikari first bites.
      Sorry for the long message, I nearly ordered some Venezuelan blacks but my sterbais starting T-ing (I got 5 really young, only 2 perfect specimens, one ok and 2 have deformities very small and fins aren’t fully formed) love the Sterbais.
      Thanks again for the help great content, Subbed and great content keep it up

    • @DanielKeepingFish

      Well they eat their own eggs which admittedly are smaller but I'm sure they'll nip at the Cory eggs to see what they taste like.
      Best thing you can do (apart from separating them) is to check for the eggs first thing in the morning when the Tetra will have been resting, before they really begin stirring and moving around.

    Don't EVER use a breeding net. The fry will get trapped and die. Stick with the hard-sided container while you set up a grow-out tank with seasoned filter and seasoned water. If you pay attention, (or put a breeding mop in the tank) you will be able to collect 30 - 100 eggs - not just ONE.
