We Drove 400 Miles for a Free KAWASAKI MULE... Will It Run? - Diagnosing NO START NO CRANK - Part 1

- Опубликовано: 21 сен 2020
- Well this was never meant to be a DOA... we got in our Jeep Grand Cherokee and drove 400 miles to our family farm to pickup a free 2002 Kawasaki Mule... of course when we got there it didn't run... now we have to diagnose a total no crank no start situation
Keep an eye out for part 2 where we will rebuild the carburetor and hopefully fire this thing up for the first time.

Get an adjustable sawhorse and lay a ~2’ wide piece of plywood from the sawhorse to the frame, with a 2x4 spacer. So you can lay over the tire and work down into the engine from the top. I’m old and can’t lean waaay over everything and it helped out a LOT!!!
Missed you guys! Im super pumped to see where this project goes haha
Yea bud. Scheduling has been a nightmare lately. I wont be back to 2 vids a week for another few weeks, but we will get there. I have about 10 videos all ready to shoot.... just need the time
Only 6:02 time mark and a truly amateur hour episode! LOL LOVE IT!
Yea bud.. there was a ton of amateur work being done on this one
Gonna need another sheet of plywood for the box on the mule... Nice grypmat! I love mine. I saw Mustie1 has one as well.
Yea but. This poor Mule hasn't been under cover at all for 18 years. Those Grypmats are awesome if not pricey.
You have spark , if you have compression then it has to be fuel delivery problem, like someone said shoot some starter fluid in. Gummed up carb I bet !
Man that thing sounds like it’ll be legit to keep around when you get it rollin! I need to keep an eye out for fun toys like that!
“Cool let’s go chase an electrical problem UGG”” dude I feel your pain😫😫😫😫
I had the same one years ago and I used it for a pickup. Drove it to town and everything
A lot of people drive their UTV's and ATV's around town where I live....not nearly as bad as some towns with people driving their golf carts all over the place.
I wish that was a thing in Jersey! I wouldn;t make it 1/4 mile before someone called the cops
@@DEInTheGarage Just remind the cops that your UTV is bigger than a "Smart" car so there's no reason you couldn't drive it on the road...here in Idaho they're not supposed to drive them on the highway or freeway....keyword "supposed", they do it anyhow, and the cops just let them do it....you can drive them on the roads like side streets and in town though legally, just has to be registered and insured like a car. Hell some of these dang UTV's now go 80mph or faster anyways.
Where is the vin number on the mule 2500? Just bought an old one and i need to find parts & get it running!
After they set for awhile tap on fuel pump and put B12 in fuel tank often to cut trash out
Wow, that is incredible scenery. I have heard that Ithaca is Gorges!
Love the shirts, I'll have to take a look when I can. Did you try tossing a bit of fuel down the spark plug hole and then reinstalling the plug and see if it would chooch?
I have poked at this thing a bit more since filming this. I did a compression test and it is good, but the plugs get soak in fuel as soon as you try cranking on it. Carb is definitely all jammed up
It sounds just like mine but I noticed that when you were starting you didn't keep the choke handle out. If I don't it won't choke properly. Good luck 👍
I love farm things! This "on location" vibe was really cool. Did you use a different lens??? Such a fun vid. Love the DOAs 💪💪💪
Farm things for the win! We used our usual gear, but my mic broke, so I am dependent on the onboard GoPro and Sony FDR mics currently. It has been leading to some inconsistent audio
I’m digging the new shirt idea 👍
Hey bud, little behind on videos because I’m visiting my folks back in MO. Went to a junkyard earlier and saw some WJ tow hooks. Were you looking for a set or was that someone else I was thinking of?
That is a great looking new shirt.
Check the natural safety switch wire
It breaks off pretty regularly
I live right by Ithaca!! Came to the channel when you first started Lake Effect. Lol. Bring another Avalanche back!
We were basically down the road from you then! We are looking for another Avy for sure
We had one of these mules at work. It sounded the exact same when it was cranking.
I am actually really glad you mention that because even thought I have checked EVERYTHING.. the sound of it cranking has still haunted me a bit. haha
Yes our 4 mules sound just like it. Had them since New.
I want that shirt
617cc gas engine. Great motor. I've used Chinese fuel pump for $20 on Amazon.
Do the fuel pumps go out on these?
@@DEInTheGarage my original did 2x. Amazon ones are $20 and last 100 hours or so and take 10 min to swap. Kawasaki oem is $200. Great machines. Mines a 94' 2500.
Before ordering a carb kit I would have hit her up with some “Cosby in a can” (as peg from zip ties and bias plys would call it) and make sure she lit off. The carb could be fine and it be a fuel issue, or other.
Between you me and a tree I did give her a few snorts, but no go. The video was getting too long so i had to cut a few little things
D&E In The Garage Buddy buck, if it didn’t pop it’s cherry with a little Cosby then there Maybe another issue, besides the carb. She should’ve at least popped off a little bit on the either. Could the timing be off on her ??
I just dont know bud. I am hoping to get the carb rebuilt so atleast I can eliminate that as an issue
Well done jimmy jamming that footage in! I approve!!
You take RUclips continuity to a whole new level bud!
@@DEInTheGarage nah.. I kinda botched it in my wiper hunt vid. When you get a chance lemme know if you can spot the discrepancy 🤦♂️
I got a old farm seed trailer like that
Did you hit it with any starter fluid while it was cranking to verify that it's a lack of fuel issue?
I did off camera. The issue is that the carb is just dump fuel into the cylinders so the plugs foul immediately
Yeah that starter did sound kind of weird but I think after a carburetor rebuild or a new carburetor you'll be in business
Me too bud. That is the plan
nuetral position switch...look on crankcase diagram. 13151-1080
This may seem like a dumb question but what do call the plate that sets on top of the center console with the markings for the gears and the transfer case ? Mine disintegrated and I need one
That is going to be you "shift bezel".. weird name. lots of people need that part
That must be a weak part on these wj jeeps. I found a new old stock one on eBay but it was 38 dollars. Steep but I went ahead and got it
How did you bypass to directly wire the starter? I have the same issue right now with the same model.
It's the only small wire going to starter
Full disclosure, I don’t have the time to watch a lot of RUclips. So I stopped it 3 secs. I’m a small engine mechanic and I work on these when they come into the shop. And boy, I’ll tell you, the mules that my friends own at their farm... we send those things to the moon. I’ve removed the governors in each of them and two have a performance intake, exhaust, and a bit more fuel going to them. They rip! One is currently busted... buddy crashed it into a tree and we’ve got some front end suspension and steering parts coming in the mail lol.
Last time I was this early, the avalanche ran into a wall
Nice one
We didnt run this one into a wall... yet
On the next episode 🤷♂️😂
Classic
That starter sounds normal, got 4 of these. Looked like it was cranking fast enough when you showed the rocker arms. But you should listen to these people that don't even own one !!!!
I love that mule it will be a good one
It takes 10.5 v rotry that is the dead point for starting ( h🎉🎉🎉igh amps. Good luck.
Thought you were selling the Explorer LOL...like driving it too much don't ya HAHA!!! As long as it doesn't have Firestone tires you're good ;).
Well it is technically for sale, but I am asking too much for it. That was I can tell myself "you did all you could do.. it is up for sale" but also get to keep driving it
@@DEInTheGarage HAHA, I understand. They're not as bad as the hype makes them out to be.
I once sent a shop runner to get me a left angle wrench lol need to get someone out of your hair for a few hours have them look for left angle wrenches.
When I was in the scount we would send the group of new recruits at a Jamboree around to every troop looking for a "left handed smoke shift". Gotta love that stuff.
I'm picking up two of these 500 bucks each tomorrow
Guns and cars?! You guys just made my top 5.
WOOHOO! What more could you want out of life?
@@DEInTheGarage I still owe you some hot sauce from your hot wings challenge! I'll send another email.
Sad thing is you could have checked that without taking the starter off
Ithica is a beautiful place
It really is!
Compression check !
Things sweet, do a compression test.
I did one off camera and will include it in part 2, but this is pushing 110 psi on both sides
Seems you’ll had gun fun time and trip, AllWAYS carrry a compressor or air tank out of town
Nice shirt, I need a WJ and a 2 door XJ for mine.
PS did I mention I bought a 2 door XJ? 😎
Did you really?? That is awesome! How is it?
@@DEInTheGarage It's a manual, I figured the youngest needed to learn to drive a stick shift. 😎. Body is in good shape except for some minor damage in the front corner on the passenger side, but nothing that a monkey with a toolbox and a u pull yard nearby can't fix 😎. Just a 2WD (so the previous guy who owned it for 20 years stored it in the garage over the winters), but I see some upgrades in it's future.
@@fleetofwjs1893 Sounds like a damn good pickup!
@@DEInTheGarage pictures sent.
Forgot to mention, the center console latch looks to be original... and it's not broken. I had to check it three times to make sure I wasn't mistaken LOL. 😎
Just hold it wot and get it to fire over
Your jump start will not boost not try if it zs below a set volt value
Read boosterannual. Good luck
Should of got a Polaris
For free jaja yeah i have one too
