+Phloid82 Nah. What I saw was someone who knew that she wasn't being told the whole truth. She never bought into his lie, unlike the less educated and more gullible people on the show.
Though, despite it being a show, what he said about children is true. Not that all of them are geniuses, but their thought process is much more original than an adult's. And then, at school, we teach them how to think by forcing them to do things one way and one way only and not use their brain to think.

I have a granddaughter the same age as this little girl and she got called up on stage at a holiday show last week and we have a video of it. The guy was a sort of magician and made balloon animals...that kind of thing for the kids. He ask her to name any animal and he'd make it for her. He was probably expecting her to say "dog" or "cat", You should see his reaction when she said, "spider monkey". The entire place went crazy.
There are indeed four apples on the card. When he shows the mom the card, and asks her "what number would you say", he signals with his hand towards her, briefly but very obviously putting one finger up as he asks the question. This is a very simplistic way of manipulating people's thoughts, but apparently it works. I used to do something similar as a kid; using a specific word in the question that sounded a lot like the number I was 'predicting', and using seemingly insignificant pauses, with the right timing and tone, I found out that most people would fall for it. They'd 'think' of a random number, but in most instances they thought of the number that I briefly but very clearly highlighted in the question. The mom says one because he shows her one finger. It's not a random number as such, she's just very easy to manipulate. When it's the daughter's turn, he doesn't do the hand-gesture, but instead holds the card up with four fingers facing her. The thumb is on the back of the card. It's a weird way of holding a card. Normally, you'd make like a fist and hold the card between thumb and index in the center of the bottom; the way a soccer ref holds up a red card. But he very obviously places four fingers right on the front of the card, so that they're very clearly visible to her. She says four, I think.. wasn't too clear to me what she uttered. The calculation trick seems quite difficult to pull off, and I'm not entirely sure how it's done. The mom is staring at the problem, trying to make sense of it, and her focussing on the symbols and numbers is kind of the point, I believe. The answer she gives is irrelevant, even though there was a small chance that she would've said 12 by mere coincidence. When he shows the daughter the card, the girl isn't considering the calculation. She doesn't know these symbols, but she's probably old enough to know that 15 - 3 = 12. She recognizes the minus symbol, while ignoring all other unfamiliar symbols, and because what she sees on the top of the card is 15 = - 3, it's probable that she extracts those numbers and symbols and gets 12 as a result. The mom is trying to interpret the problem, because she does recognize all of those other symbols, whereas the child does not, so what the child sees (i.e. notices) and what the mom sees is different. I find this quite interesting. The final trick is probably just him getting them to focus on the big colorful object while he quickly grabs a hidden rubix cube that matches the big one. All in all, it's pretty obvious what's happening here, and I wouldn't have fallen for it, but I think he did great. Nice, natural presentation. Some of the things he said were very nonsensical. Children are born knowing? Lol. They're not. We come into the world devoid of knowledge. And intuition (or gut feeling, or instinct) is rejected as a source of knowledge because it's not objectively verifiable. If I was being told that, it would immediately cause me to pay extra close attention to what this guy is saying and doing.
And its even easier because it's a television show; so they tried the trick on 100 people and the only one that worked perfectly was aired (after editing out anything that would tip off the audience). Just saying; I've worked in television. Never trust it.
The cards one he probably just hides the answer with his hand when showing to the mom and when he shows it to the kid he changes his hand position. When I worked with kids party we used this trick. Most kids get along with the act pretty quick, specially when they understand that they're tricking adults, they become instant sidekicks to the performance. And you probably would be fooled too because people like him are professionals in getting your attention, no matter how smart you are. That's why they choose these public places where people let their guard down instead of openly saying they are magicians and start raising suspicions. We know it's a trick so we start paying attention to other details, but when we are in a conversation with a cashier we tend to focus on other things.
this is better explanation than what other people were saying i’ve been looking because watching the video i said 4 and 12 too and it freaked me out cuz idk how i did but most people watching didn’t do that i’ve only seen two other people comment they got it right too that’s crazy
I've got a far easier explanation. This is all actually faked. The equation one is a dead giveaway because you cannot solve it analytically, it requires a numeric approximation to obtain the result 12, which means that this problem was either solved correctly by pure guess and they just tried this on multiple kids till they got one that replied what they wanted, or they are clearly just acting.
Yes, 12 is the right answer, BUT, if you watch the video carefully, you see they inserted a clip when he is showing the math problem to them. The card is probably not the one that was originally showed to them, but one that corresponds the the answer 12. If you look at the placement of Michael's right hand, the thumb is about at the point where the space is between the top and the bottom parts of the question mark. Then when they go back to the original footage, his hand is in a different position on the card. Later in the video, they use the equation that is shown in that added clip.
@Gaius Arroyo More important than whether you were originally right or wrong is that you had the integrity and intellectual honesty to recognize, acknowledge and admit that you were wrong. BTW, I didn't have a clue as to how to go about figuring out the answer.
@Lance Penguin exactly, the majority of them just had a good memory and remembered the answers for their tests or they plagiarize from existing books when writing a theses. Anybody can read a book and spout off what they've read but knowing what you're talking about is different. Just because someone "is" a psychologist doesn't necessarily mean they "ought" to know what they're talking about.
Imagine how many parents would have bought into what he was saying, and then purchased these items. He could be a very wealthy man. Until they took it home and could not reproduce the same results.
I love how the mother is immediately VERY skeptical. She knows there's something fishy. She's the smart one here. She has a physics brain which would literally cause her to go insane trying to understand this. LOL

The gentleman actually does make a point in that kids are much smarter before they learn the processes of solving problems in many cases. Our curiosity and Imagination are discouraged by society's developed teaching methods.

Though, despite it being a show, what he said about children is true. Not that all of them are geniuses, but their thought process is much more original than an adult's. And then, at school, we teach them how to think by forcing them to do things one way and one way only and not use their brain to think.

But the math equation was right and we saw it
It never shows the math card and the girl at the same time. Pay attention to the editing.

Firstname Lastname The answer is twelve though.
My Happy Place Is it really?
The little is so cute. She does not care about all that has happened.that is cutest thing
=D
If I was being told that, it would immediately cause me to pay extra close attention to what this guy is saying and doing.
....you're right, I remember reading a while back about, “ suggestive hand gestures“ Magicians were also included in the article too.
The girl is me when I guess a question and get it right
Than the pranks, love the chap talking , that confident !!!!! LMAO
love the screaming kid in thee background. -_-
12 is actually the right answer
According to many people on this string, 12 is not the right answer.
