I used to watch The Spoons and tons of other great Canadian bands on Video Hits with Samantha Taylor - I am sure fellow Canadians growing up in the '80's remember her....and the show!
Canada and Toronto especially was a hotbed for New Wave bands. CFNY 102.1 THE BEST radio station back in the day. Not sure why but we really accepted new music. I miss those days!
I was in grade 8 when this song came out and I loved it instantly. I remember assuming they were British. I was into Joy Division, Bauhaus, Simple Minds, The Jam. I was blown away when I found out they were Canadian. It just made me love them more.
I love the 80s ideas of the future: lots of neon, glowing geometrical objects, and very long synthesizer chords. Who knew the actual future would be so lame?
A transplant to the Prairies from Hamilton, I miss listening to the Sunday retro show on 102.1 The Edge, also miss "The Ongoing History Of New Music" show too. I have always loved this song, it reminds me of so much during my pre-teen and teen years, great memories, CYO camp, summers at the Beach and Hutch's, Ice cream at Stoney Creek Dairy, Wild Water Works, Canada's Wonderland, Hamilton International Airshow, Festival of Friends, Your Festival, Prudhome's Landing, WOW, What great memories!
@Johnnywhamo: Amen Johnny! I grew up in Buffalo and it was great to know that when you got tired of the same dreary commercial gruel played on the American stations, you could always turn to CFNY for something good, new, and interesting. I remember hearing these guys, Strange Advance, the Payolas, a Scottish band called The Waterboys (and a weird Irish band called U2) first on CFNY. Thanks for the post - lots of great memories. Wish I could buy you one of those great Canadian beers. Cheers!
saw the year ...1981 !!!!! this songs one of the pioneers of new wave .way ahead of alot of groups back then ...gotta see them soon ...love the 80s music
Before I got access to youtube years ago, it was hard to watch this video because it was never played so the only way I could watch it is on those rare 80s specials. Misheard lyrics and all when I was a kid, I still love this song.
Met my loving wife of 26 years ejoying this tune. Our kids have since married and gratuated college. It has been a good run. The architects of the world will soon see their NWO come apart but we rest in the Nova Heart of Absalom Jesus. Thanks for sharing this song via the silver Spoons.
Boy - the guys take that Flock Of Seagulls dance to a whole new level. I bought this album in the .29 cent bin at Aron's in Hollywood years ago. One of the few good twenty-nine cent'rs. The opening instrumental track on the record is great. You could tell these guys (and girls) were really creative musicians trying to fit in the pop/new wave 80s.
Thanks for posting this obscure gem! I forgot about many songs/bands from my past and I'm really appreciative to find them by pure chance. If it weren't for kind uploaders who enjoy old school music, I'd be lost and miss out on great but forgotten music. Gotta go, 'Romantic Traffic' is next. :)
THE SPOONS was the first concert I saw during my h/s days in the 80s. That night, Sandy was the first one to ever make me consider marriage as a teenager. She's STILL beautifully timeless.
Couldn't agree with you more, "Sandy" was always cute, but ever more beautiful as a brunette. One of the favourites songs. They don't make great music like this anymore.80's music rock baby!
For those those that are interested, the Spoons just released a new album "Static In Transmisssion", it came out last week. They are also currently working on the video for the first single "You LIght Up" . The albums is fantasic and you can pic it up at most record stores.
I just LOVED this when it first came out. Back then there were no laptops, no midi, no cells. Looking at this now, well... if we need proof of time travel, then VOILA! :) Thanks for posting this.
Sandy was a sweetheart, she was an alright bass player too, I owned a Spector bass that used to be hers at one point, there weren't too many female musicians who got taken seriously but she did.
I spent years attempting finding the album this song (Nova heart) was a track on (arias and symphonies) during the eighties. Thank you so very much for taking the time to upload it here. Stephen Wayne Reno Monday, July 19, 2010
Oh yeah!!! I remember Video Hits too! Great show. I also remember watching another 1/2 hour show with a young Jeannie Becker. It was on late at night, around 11:00-ish. At the moment, I can't remember its name, though. I watched it right after SCTV.
oh but now you would be old like me and sentimental about your lost years when you hear songs like this and resentful towards little tarts wearing tights and bad accessories b/c they think it is ironic... sigh
I remember going to the Spoons concert in Toronto; what a great show; they all seemed a little nervous on stage for the 1st few songs what with beach balls flying around the audience. My buddies the next day said they saw it too; as City tv simualcast the visual along with CHUM-FM doing the audio for this concert. City`s Much-music finally brought out the DVD of the Toronto concert along with a Montreal show on the same disc and you can see the difference as the band matured over the years
This the first and only 80s song and video from Canada that I've seen that I've never seen here in the US. The only time I've seen it was when I had MuchMusic from the late 90s to the early 00s. This is the 2nd time I've ever seen this video and it makes me wonder what else did I miss out on in the 80s from Canada...other than Rush.
A long time ago I saw them live at the taping of Battle of the bands in the CBC studios in Vancouver, BC...I had a huge crush on Her. In talking with them during edits/retakes they struck me as really nice down to earth folks having a good time. I hope they are doing well. Thanx for the vid. :-)
@Johnnywhamo i think it's our british influence, and let's face it the Brits are the champs for music, punk, new wave, electronica......amazing house dj's.....maybe it's that we smoke a different strand of weed than Americans? maybe....
@kinglouie1968 You make a very good point. It seems like there was a certain optimism present in the 80's regarding the future that you just can't find anywhere today. From my point of view, as somewhat of a pessimist, the future for this world appears very bleak and dreadful. Let's face it, overpopulation may be the most threatening factor to our survival. And I agree with you 100% regarding the lameness of today. The present is very lame and I think the future holds more of the same.
Beg to differ, there's no way you could miss the very early 80's sound of this track. The drum machine and guitar tone (two words: chorus pedal) date this track. The guitar and bass playing are far better than the computer assisted work you hear on most of today's tracks. And finally, the actual songwriting is too good to pass for a "something new". Nobody remembers how to write good melodies and good hooks anymore. :(
Spoons did a few memeorable shows in Calgary in the year "Waterline" was released as a video. I'll never forget the shows! Post more Spoons if you're able!!
Dear RUclips friends -- I've got a song on my mind and can't remember the name or band. It was typically played on the CFNY/edge 102 retro sundays. The lyrics had something about "out of sight, out of mind' or 'don't walk on by'. I'm not sure if I'm mixing up two songs up but I'm sure this will ring a bell for someone out there. My bet, if you like The Spoons you know and like this song. Thanx.
Why would they do a " digital re-master"? The song sounds great the way it was recorded back then....don't mess with it!! I will never understand why people want to take original recordings and update them!?! These songs are part of a period in music history and should be left alone and heard the way the artist recorded them.
aww i used to know these guys. they rock. i know all this inside info about this video lol. like their nails and the keyboards have white out on them hehe.
Hands down, one of the greatest Canadian pop songs ever!
I was in grade 8 when this song came out and I loved it instantly. I remember assuming they were British. I was into Joy Division, Bauhaus, Simple Minds, The Jam. I was blown away when I found out they were Canadian. It just made me love them more.
This song is 26-27 years old and it still sounds FRESH as ever. A timeless classic!!
I am from Mexico and I was in Edmonton 30 years ago and I went to a Spoons concert. Since then I have this song in my mind. Thanks for this video...
Only 183,000 views? I don't get it, this is perfection. Songs like this one from the 80s really hit the heart.
I love the 80s ideas of the future: lots of neon, glowing geometrical objects, and very long synthesizer chords. Who knew the actual future would be so lame?
The 80's rock, I love this song and the feeling I get from the music, very soothing and takes me back to my youthful days
This song always reminds me of The Edge 102 Live to Air retro nights at Whiskey Saigon and then Velvet Underground!! RIP Martin Streek!!
thanks for the memories...truly one of the best canadian bands to come out of the early 80's disco dust...
@Johnnywhamo: Amen Johnny! Can't say enough about this song or band, a great Canadian talent.
102.1 the 80s, toronto,miss it.sucks getting old!
Hmmm, I am not sure about that show(?) - but I do remember "Good Rockin' Tonight" with Terry David Mulligan, that was great as well!
CFNY roadshows ... summers of 1982 ... Spoons at the Concert Hall !!! What times! What fun!
Gotta love the Canuck synthpop.....great era!!
saw the year ...1981 !!!!! this songs one of the pioneers of new wave .way ahead of alot of groups back then ...gotta see them soon ...love the 80s music

Takes me back to summer camp in '82 and dancing with cute preppy/new wave girls to this tune. Always loved this song. Thanks for the memories.
I watched this video five days in row, I can't get the song out of my head.
One Word.." CLASSIC"!!! This Song Is The Ipidemy Of The 80's!!!
Two words...Sandy Horn :)
Saw The Spoons and Strange Advance back in the 80's, what a killer show! Thanks for posting!!!
Met my loving wife of 26 years ejoying this tune. Our kids have since married and gratuated college. It has been a good run. The architects of the world will soon see their NWO come apart but we rest in the Nova Heart of Absalom Jesus. Thanks for sharing this song via the silver Spoons.
brings back many fond memories
Class! real Class!!
This tune is one of those precious ones
The song is excellent; and I dig the video concept. Abstract, yet beautiful!!!!

My ex wifes family lived next door to the drummer from this band, he gave me a set of drum sticks ..LOL...
Oh yeah!!! I remember Video Hits too! Great show. I also remember watching another 1/2 hour show with a young Jeannie Becker. It was on late at night, around 11:00-ish. At the moment, I can't remember its name, though. I watched it right after SCTV.
Awesome song! And of course Sandy is very beautiful.
I just remembered the name of the show - New Music. I also remember Good Rockin' Tonight with TDM. I liked him!
oh but now you would be old like me and sentimental about your lost years when you hear songs like this and resentful towards little tarts wearing tights and bad accessories b/c they think it is ironic... sigh
Brilliant underappreciated song.

A Canadian classic!

Fantastic song from a fantastic Canadian band!!!
Clearly, we're more than Bryan Adams and Celine Dion! (as good of musicians as they are!).
brilliant post

thats funny cause I say the same about the UK music (as a canadian) I grew up to alot of UK imports...and didn't realize it until I got older.
The number of views on this video after 1.5 years just goes to show how much of a lost classic this really is.
Beg to differ, there's no way you could miss the very early 80's sound of this track. The drum machine and guitar tone (two words: chorus pedal) date this track. I like the use of repeated, soft, glowing light and the girl is very pretty. They sound sort of like U2. Cool
@M0ntr34l ... esp. with some 80s sounds making a come back, I think you're absolutely right!
This is my FAVORITE 80's song !!!! I love the song, dont care at all for the video
Smoooooooth!!:)
I remember seeing them live at Burlington mall lol
after our little G20 thingy up here, this song has tremendous relevence!
Oh, also, Gordon Deppe was a cutie ;^)
Canadian!
@Johnnywhamo Toronto still does
Spoons did a few memeorable shows in Calgary in the year "Waterline" was released as a video. I'll never forget the shows! Post more Spoons if you're able!!
Bring back new wave! THats all I say.
Went and saw Tron legacy last night, and all I could think of was this song...
dam they look so young-just kids really. I think I still have my crush on her. What a dream girl
personally, I think Sandy looked better as a brunette; went blonde after this.
very underated canadian band; thax for posting.

@mapleavenue77 Blue Peter played at my high school when i was in grade 9...i viviidly remember 'dont walk on past' sooo loud!
Video is too hokey. Song is still strong. God I loved dancing to this...and "Doot Doot."
I feel a download coming on.
Why would they do a " digital re-master"? The song sounds great the way it was recorded back then....don't mess with it!!
