the way i understand the topic marker is that it is stated since in korean we don't repeat the topic of the conversation like in english or spanish or other languages.
for example. I am hungry, i want food, but i don't want to eat at a restaurant.
In korean we don't repeat the "I" so many times, we would say something like:
I am hungry, want food, but not eat at restaurant.
This is because koreans usually omit the "i" reference because it is understood when we speak it. and every statement is always referred to the original topic, unless changed. It's a cultural thing that is why us "westerners" have a hard time with this at the beginning.
It's definitely something I had a hard time with in the beginning.
I've had the same thought. The syntax in Korean is often very different from English, Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Takes some getting used to.
It's better to say that it's not omission but "addition". I mean, Korean doesn't "omits" parts of a sentence but rather the "omitted" form is basic. Using subjects or objects are "additional". If the removing of subject or object is really omission, then not omitted forms must be most natural. However, it's not the case. You need to miss out many parts of the sentence so as to make it natural. So, I insist that the very basic Korean sentence doesn't have either a subject nor an object. Non-verbal conversation such as mumbling or gesturing is the very basic Korean, and verbal expressions are the next step. Adding a subject or object for clearer meaning is the next level, and finally putting a case marker.
Well the syntax of Korean and Hindi are same ,hehe
In Poland, we have the same thing. I mean we don't have exactly a topic marker like that but we say something like ' I ate pizza. I go to bed." But we don't' say ' I'. It's more like 'ate pizza. go to bed' ;) Without pronoun. But we conjugate the verbs so 'I eat', is Ja jem or Jem (only verb), you eat is Ty jesz or Jesz (also only verb).
It's really nice to finally meet another language where don't repeat pronouns in every sentence ;)

It's like playing UNO, if I want to play a yellow card, then I need to change the colour to yellow. If the colour is already yellow then there is no need to change colours.

Idk why people say they have a hard time with topic marker and subject marker, to me its pretty straight forward but what i struggled with was subject markers and object markers.

When using Duolingo, they don't really explain the rules much, So I first noticed (Chega and Chonen) and I was like what's the difference? Slowly I came to the conclusion that it meant As for me...and the fact that you confirmed it makes me even happier!
Next one I'm curious about is (Chega) and adding (so) to the end of nouns

I never actually thought about it this way. I mean, I always knew it was acceptable to imit the topic of a sentence in some instances, and my English brain always had trouble understanding why. But that might be because I was just making singular sentences for practice, and when I looked at it without the topic, I went "but then no one knows what I'm talking about". It makes so much more sense when placed in the context of an actual conversation. Or even a speech, I guess. You state the topic once, and then not again, unless changing the topic. That explanation and example made it much clearer. 감사합니다, 선생님!!

Marks what the topic is going to be about and doesn't have to repeat the topic again, if the topic hasn't changed

This is a pretty simple topic to grasp but I’m so confused on when to use topic markers and when to use subject markers.

we also dont repeat the i's in hindi as well just like hangul, so i find it really easy to put the topic marker wherever needed.
i’m really glad i know japanese because it makes translating easier 😭 i don’t have to relearn sentence order, i don’t need to learn particles, etc. i just think 는 = は 를 = が etc etc. the formalities are still confusing to me tho, japanese seems so intuitive to me, but probably because i’ve been speaking it for 7 years. hopefully one day i’ll see hangul as intuitive as well

You can start learning vocabulary whenever you'd like, but know that you'll need grammar in order to use and memorize that vocabulary more easily. So don't go overboard :)

Is there a general rule about words that aren't (at least conventionally) nouns that can use the topic marker? I believe I have seen things like "한국에서는" at the start of a sentence, or I feel like a common one is 오늘은 where I believe 은 is attaching to what normally functions as an adverb
This lesson just focuses on using it with nouns, but a later lesson will show how you can use it more with particles to add contrast. However, no matter how it's being used, its meaning is the same as I explain in this video.

Practicing is limited since you're not able to make many sentences beyond the words you know, but you can try to make sentences with these topics on your own after each lesson. Keep your sentences extremely simple, and I think they'll be helpful for getting the hang of things.

billy i have a confusion can you please teach me...that in the previous lecture we used 를 with object as saying pizza is an object in the sentence but now we are saying that we need to add 는 with noun... and again here its pizza...is it just for example or something else i didnt understand please teach me...

If someone were to say "저는" and change the topic to them, if I wanted to say something about them, would it be implied that I'm talking about them, or would I have to change the topic to their name?
It would depend on the exact situation, but if the topic was changed to them then yes you can continue talking about them, as long as it's clear you're not talking about yourself. But to be clear, you might also want to add their name again with the topic marker, for example.

There isn't a Topic Marker in that sentence. 좋은 is the adjective form of 좋다 ("to be good"). However your first sentence does use the Object Marker correctly (수박을 좋아해요).

ㄹ still confuses me that its is 'r' or 'l'.
Sometimes it is 'r' sometime it is 'l'😑😑

If ㄹ is at the end of a syllable, it’s an “L” sound, unless the following syllable starts with the silent ㅇ consonant.
If ㄹ is at the beginning of a syllable, it’s an R sound unless the previous syllable also ended with a ㄹ.
Ex1: 말 can mean horse. When by itself, it’s pronounced mal with an L. But If you try to say “horse is...” then you have 말이 which is pronounced “mari”.
Ex2: 라디오 is pronounced “ra di o” with an R since the ㄹ is at the beginning of the syllable.
Ex3: 멜론 is pronounced melon with an L because the ㄹ is there twice to make it a hard L

When I say the word 사랑, and I say it naturally, it always comes out as "salang" when I try to say it naturally. But every single Korean I've seen, they pronounce it as "sarang".

This is the same as Japanese while English demands its subject / topic. S V O. Japanese n korean sentences seem to be without subject. S O V but. >> O V So if I say “ Did homework “ even without saying who, it’s assumed it’s me ( I ) I guess by this that must happen in korean too.

Sorry. Typo. OFTEN seem. ( not always ) Also sometimes just a verb is a sentence on same principle. Eg. You ask about my homework. I don’t say I DID IT. I’d just say DID やりました、Yarimashita .
In my native language (Brazilian Portuguese), we also tend to omit the topic after already mentioning it, since we conjugate the verb differently to every pronoun. The repetition of the pronouns in English always made me a little annoyed lol
Confused like hell about where to use 애 and where to use 에 in a word...... any solution you have?
It's only spelling. Just like words that use "k" instead of "c" even though they can make the same sound. You only need to worry about 에 or 애 when spelling words.

@@akylas9184 I'm not sure what you mean. 에 and 애 are just syllables. They have no meaning unless you put them together into a word.

If you've never used discord, it may take a few minutes to get used to it (that was my experience and I learn new things about how to use discord every day). It's a really safe way to practice because everyone knows that we are all learning and growing so there are no judgments.
