  • After 5 years of plateau... the iPad Pro and iPad Air will finally be getting some substantial updates. Rumors talk about an iPad Pro M4 with a newish design, thinner chassis, new Apple Pencil and probably a new keyboard accessory. This is all exciting speculation, but in this video I talk more about why 2024 lines up as the year we can at the very least expect some big changes coming to the product line. Apple has had a lot to fix since 2018, and they've since did it with Apple Silicon Macs and phones since iPhone 11 Pro. On top of that, they just announced Vision Pro, which no doubt took R&D resources away from the iPad product category... which is why I'm saying - it's FINALLY the iPads time to shine!

I tend to grab my iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard first while my MacBook Air sits in my bag. The iPad Pro OS along with the keyboard is far faster and versatile in more ways. The MacBook Air or any laptop is a fine desktop replacement, but limits and unnecessarily lengthens what should be quick tasks. Because the iPad uses apps that are lightening fast, while being simpler to navigate, multitasking on the go is a breeze compared to navigating online desktop based applications. Pair that with the touchscreen, pencil, quick gestures of the Magic Keyboard and the super fast internal hardware, the iPad Pro is hard to beat. You only get boxed in by company software that is limited to online application and incompatible or unsupported at this time. Even those experiences are so few and far between. I'm looking forward to screen and internal advancements, but what I want to see more than anything is a battery that rivals the MacBook Air. The iPad Pro was lasting all day with pretty heavy usage for years and now it suddenly barely lasts 4 hours. Even when idle or off.

Everyone knows the iPad is limited by its operating system. Apple has made us waited for 7 long years and it still can't replace most people's computer.
In 2017, Apple came up with the "What's a computer" ad.
In 2019, Apple announced they were going to separate iPadOS from iOS.
In 2021, the M1 iPad Pro came out.
In 2022, people thought, with the power of the M1 chip, Apple must be cooking something new for the iPad.
In 2024, Apple decided to host an event in May solely for the iPad.
I really hope 2024 will be the year the iPad will not just be an iPad but a laptop replacement for most people.

Decent video but i have a few thoughts. First i wouldnt say they started experimenting with the 2018 model ipad pro rather the second gen 2017 when they introduced 120hz and the lightning port was faster. I also think a lot of RUclips tech reviewers want the iPad to have Mac OS and replace their MacBooks, which i just don't agree with. I do think apple is at fault for getting lost in the sauce trying to make the ipad a worse computer than a mac and instead leaning into the niche things iPads do better whether it be media consumption and book reading on the mini, and the larger ipads being more suitable for artists and notetaking/productivity. I see the ipad pros more akin to the expensive Chromebooks google made years ago that were like $1400. Luxury hardware that wasn't needed for chrome os. Also given that the cheapest ipad is the highest selling one i believe that reinforces my argument. I think they should consolidate the ipad line, make the air the new ipad "base" model, have the mini as the slightly cheaper option and have the two pro models. But those are my thoughts.

Trying out sunglasses 🕶️ through AR. Placing furniture in my room. And the 5G UC is amazing. And just got a VESA desk mount to drive an external keyboard and trackpad for my ergonomics. It’s still that good. Then I just take the tablet in my backpack weighing 1.4lb. Very light without the keyboard. Apple needs to fix audio for iPad Pro. It is a tablet, and as iPad Pros make up only about 15% of all iPads sold, it is a niche market. That compounds why developers of third-party software are interested in something other than pro apps. It also explains why Apple has said it will never put macOS on the iPad Pros. I am sure Apple will improve their software, but it is up to devs to make iPadOS software, not Apple.

As the iPad now uses the same chips as the Mac, I can’t see why software for Mac cannot be run on the iPad, even if only operable with keyboard and trackpad interface for which it was designed. A lot of Pro users use software in their work which is just not made for iPadOS, so we can’t travel with just one device if it is the iPad Pro. That limits it usefulness to just a subsidiary device. It does not matter, what Apple does to the iPad hardware if it is software limited. So for myself, the iPadOS will have to have this macOS capability for me to go to the expense and bother of updating from my 2021 M1 iPad Pro which is quite fast enough for iPadOS as it is now and I have no trouble with the display or design either. I have jumped off the upgrade escalator and will only now upgrade if the new device brings something useful to my life.

I am not expecting very much. I think the new iPad Pro hardware will be amazing, other than being too thin. But both the iPad Pro and Vision Pro have the same problem that turn them into Apples most pointless and overpriced products, iPad OS. iPad OS is the reason Vision Pro can't do very much, and iPad OS ensures the iPad Pro will never be a laptop replacement. iPad OS cripples the iPad Pro's amazing technical capabilities to be little more than an oversized iPhone in a wall garden of mostly mediocre smart apps. iPad OS 17 even made it more difficult to side load apps. And what is Apple's obsession with trying to make everything so thin? You think they would have learnt something from the butterfly keyboard saga. If Apple sell enough 13-inch iPad Pros, we may end up with buckle gate ... press too hard on the iPad Pros display with the Apple stylus and if the chassis is not supported by a folio cover to remove the camera bump height offset, you risk bending the chassis! I will be replacing my M1 2TB 12.9-inch iPad Pro and magic keyboard with a Windows 11 arm Tablet with Snapdragon X Elite processor. I have now been using Windows 11 arm daily for the past 15 months, and it feels like a real desktop class OS for grownups, unlike iPad OS. I totally agree with you that the iPad Mini 6 is an excellent device, where iPad OS is a good fit, and the next gen iPad Mini is the only iPad I would consider purchasing again.

They could use an M100 instead of an M4, but if they still use iPhone software on iPads, it's just a test of the customers' intelligence! Having the price and weight (with the pencil and Magic Keyboard) as well as the performance of a MacBook Pro laptop, while using iPhone software (incorrectly called "iPad OS"), is merely a test of intelligence for customers who don't think for themselves. Apple has a historic opportunity to save the iPad (Pro) by allowing MAC OS (or some version of it) on the iPad, and if they don't do it now, it will be a big disappointment and the downfall of the iPad!
