What kind of crazy video is this? No Music , No jabbering, No Stuttering, No Umms, Errrs, Uhhs? Clear concise, to the point, NO BULLSHIT, and possibly the most understandable mechanical disassembly/assembly video I've ever seen... Subbed, Rang the Bell, and looking forward to anything else you care to share... BRAVO!
Absolutely fantastic video. I have an old twin cam with a ton of miles so I have done this a bunch by now. Your video is the best I have seen to date, and you explain the engine timing procedure very well, something that most of them skip on. Thank you so much for this!
What an excellent presentation -- I feel like I now have a thorough understanding of camchain tensioner removal and replacement. I have a 2003 Dyna Low Rider and at 32,000 miles my inner shoe was completely worn out and broken. I caught it in time and based on your Part 1 and Part 2 videos I have completed tensioner replacements. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
@@delorean1 I have a question. When I remove camplate it will be marked as it comes out with locking tool in place, I'm leaving oil pump in situ, when I reinstall do I still need to do the aligning process, or will it be in line still as I have removed it?. Thanks.
Absolutely THE BEST how to on this project. Thank you so much for the time you put into this. I just picked up a 2000 Road King with 15k miles. This will be the first thing I do when I get it back to my shop tomorrow. Again...... THANK YOU!!

Good instructional video. I have a 2000 FLSTC and during COVID lockdown I did the teardown, but replaced the stock camplate with hydraulic chain tensioner, new cam bearings, cams, oil pump and lifters. On the top end replaced the oil breather sponge, flapper valves and o-rings. Also installed rocker lockers which did quiet down the top end. Thanks again for the great video.
Excellent video. You covered all the technical issues and made certain the video was clear so the average guy could see and would know what he was up against. I never priced this job at a dealer, it would probably run into the $400 neighborhood. 75% of it labor. Many thanks. I will be doing mine this week. This video gives me an extra degree of confidence.
Great Video!! Although I am still afraid, I will get everything apart okay, But, when it comes to putting everything back together, Oh boy!! My Shovelhead I had back in the mid 80's was the last time I attempted to work on my Harley. I also had a great friend that rode and worked on Harleys forever. He had a garage at his house and every tool imaginable. A great friend that helped me anytime I needed it. Then in 2000 I bought an 883 Sportster that was brand new and only needed maintenance which Harley would do, because I moved away from my buddy. A few years later after selling the too small 883, I bought a low rider which Harley Dealership also did the work on, this was back in 2004. Since then, I haven't ridden until last month when I went and bought a 2001 Dyna. I have hardly any tools and no friends that can help me, also no money since I became disabled and can't make the money I used to make!! So, I HAVE to learn to do this myself or sell the bike I just bought. Which selling it is out of the question since I'm way older and disabled, if I sold it I'd probably never ride again!! So, this video really helped! So far, I haven't checked for wear on the tensioners, since I don't ride much at the moment. Now it's time to buy some tools a bit at a time so I can at least check the tensioners before I ride again. I need sockets, wrenches and the gaskets to check them. Get that done hopefully this month, and just keep watching these two vids over and over again, so if I need to replace them, I'll have a better understanding of what is involved and hopefully get the sucker put back together correctly!! Rding makes my old, broke, disabled butt feel a heck of a lot better!! No way would I even attempt this job if I had not seen this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
And, never underestimate the psychological power in the words "I ride a Harley-Davidson." Uttered to one-self quietly, and to others in full voice. From California ~ Ride Forever! 🦅
@@delorean1 It did. I actually needed tensioners. I caught it literally just in time. There was a big chunk missing sitting in the bottom of the cam chest. Better oil pump. And since repairing I put about 1200 miles on it. If I had started that bike one more time it would’ve been a boat anchor!! Thank you God!!!
Another great project. I have been waiting (and needing) to do this, and after watching these two videos, I am ready to do this. Thank you for sharing this.
Your video is amazing! Walked through step by step, you make this look easy!! I will be replacing my cam tensioners on my Twin Cam eventually and I am sure this video will be an excellent guide for that job. Thanks!
It can be done, but it is a little easier, and less expensive if you do it more than once, to have adjustable push rods. He did remove the rocker boxes. What I didn't see him do was replace bearings or clean out screen sock.

Brilliant concise video manual. Carrying out procedure this winter on 04 tc88. Not wanting to upgrade performance , just reliability. No issues with bike so far , while apart what upgrades do you think i should consider.
If you don’t have the centering tools just slowly snug the the 4 bolts little by little after turning the motor through 3 rotations. So 3 rotations loose. Then run them in until they touch the plate. So finger right basically. 3 more rotations of the motor. Then snug them down some. The service manual says how tight. 3 more rotations. Then final torque. That’s how we were taught by Harley in school. Also. The chain and sprocket don’t have to remain EXACTLY as they come out. The only part that matters is you don’t flip the chain around which would cause it to spin opposite of the way it spun before it was taken out. That’s not good. But if it’s not on the same teeth of the sprocket that doesn’t matter. They don’t stay in the same spot while it’s spinning anyway
I would have thought the school would have used the centering tool. Its the same one I use for my shovel head tappet blocks where centering is crucial for cam alignment. I know the chain the sprocket alignment isnt crucial, but there is some old lore about quicker wear if you dont keep the sprocket on the same spot. Not sure given todays QC if its still applicable but a lot of folks still do it out of habit.
Best video I have ever seen. Your attention to detail is impeccable. At mileage was this repair done on this bike? Just getting and idea of how long before this would be before it was necessary to be replaced? Thank you again.

Great detailed video! Would you be willing to do another one on lifter and cam wear on the TC 88s? I have mine out and am not sure if they need replacing or not. Thank you so much!
Aside from clear and obvious damage, there are specific parameters for wear of both the cam lobes and lifters, this video shows the removal to get to both of them.
What is your recommendation on doing this when there are adjustable pushrods installed? Would it just be easier to take rockers off and leave the pushrods adjusted the way they are? Or do you have another video detailing pushrod adjustment when reinstalling? Great video btw!
Excellent content. What's not to like? Subscribed. A TC88 is for life, take the rough with the smooth. Had a 1340 fxdl for around 10 years, wasn't going to go with the TC but got a '99 FXDL as a full restore project. Best video I've seen but I would lock the inner tensioner from the outside to aid cam install, lower back down gently.
Factory workshop manual for '99 dyna had an error. Exhaust flange lower torque to 10 ft lbs first. It's 100% 10 in lbs (given in metric as 1 nm which is correct) then 60-80 in lbs for both. I made a tool from 2" aluminium bar to press the exhaust gaskets in, they are made of soft cheese. ¼" 20 tpi tap to chase out the old thread lock if the cover has been off a few times.

Very well made video. Thanks a thousand times

What is your recommendation on doing this when there are adjustable pushrods installed? Would it just be easier to take rockers off and leave the pushrods adjusted the way they are? Or do you have another video detailing pushrod adjustment when reinstalling? Great video btw!
Adjustable...... You can leave the top end on, and remove the pushrods.
Excellent video! Well done... Thank you!!
Glad you liked it!
Sensational, just done thanks for your terrific vid. PK West Australia.👍🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent job thanks.
Best video on this that I’ve seen so far. Any idea where to find a rear tensioner tool for a reasonable price?
They are hard to find right now.
Great video. To the point. If you don’t remove the oil pump do you still need to perform the pump centering procedure?
No need

A TC88 is for life, take the rough with the smooth. Had a 1340 fxdl for around 10 years, wasn't going to go with the TC but got a '99 FXDL as a full restore project. Best video I've seen but I would lock the inner tensioner from the outside to aid cam install, lower back down gently.
Wow what a great couple videos!
Thanks so much!
I am sure I can do this 💪.
Thank you , nice motorcycle!
Good luck.
