    I am a home bound handicapped grandma, therefore I understand that I have more things than a traditional minimalist, but I despise clutter so I keep the amount of 'stuff' down. Recently, I was forced to downsize my craft room, as I flipped through my old journals and scrapbooks, I realized that the pages even though the pages did bring back memories, they didn't increase my happiness or joy, so I deconstructed them all. I kept the actual artwork, donated reusable items to a foundation for disabled artists and tossed the rest. That was last month, I don't miss the huge tote full of journals and scrapbooks sitting in my closet, but it has changed the way I create the books now that I am aware of what actually was worth saving.

    As soon as Ryan spoke about the plants I could sense he did not want to keep them or maintain them. There is nothing wrong with giving plants away to someone who has a garden and who would love to receive them. Heirloom vegetables are a treasure to an avid gardener. :-)

    I’ve had the extra food come in handy multiple times so that’s one things I’ll never be minimalist. However, we do practice zero food waste which saves even more money and forces us to stay organized and on top of things.

    Ella is gently preparing you for the teenage years! As a parent, I was willing to hold a space for my college kid to periodically return to during the 4 years of university. But once they graduated, all their stuff left my house.

    Touching on the idea of detoxing - I visited Holland and Barrett (possibly just a British store) and luckily there is a woman in my local store who is super knowledgable.
    She recommends detoxing twice a year for 2-4weeks Max.
    I took her advise - I ate clean for 4 weeks. The first 2 weeks I took charcoal capsules and drank yogi detox tea, once a day, the next two weeks I took milk thistle and still drank the tea. My skin was glowing! It completely cleared up and I felt so much cleaner internally. - just a thought, if anyone is struggling with skin but they’re turning to skincare - try healing from the inside out. It’s so easy to get stuck in a beauty industry loop! I got so caught up in consumerism/that Instagram selling the woman spoke about in this episode that I forgot I can heal from my gut ❤️

    You should ask "how much space do the scrapbooks take up?" One box? half the basement? Are the parents going to downsize soon? Is it REALLY just scrapbooks or ALL your toys, clothing, awards, CDs for the past twelve years?

    Big big fan of the minimalist and you changed my life for good! The 1 in and 10 out works the best for me. I go on hunting things I dont need, I reduce and only then buy something else, if I have to!

    "Bacteria, though, is that vegan?" "Probiotics, they are little, living microorganisms."
    Plants are living organisms too, guys. (As I chuckle in the podcast intro's kid giggling voice). We house tons of bacteria in our bodies as they play a major role in our survival. The definition of 'living' doesnt involve 'suffering' which is what veganism is concerned with.

    It's harder to get rid of things during Covid because you have to make an appointment (sometimes the next available time slot is weeks away) with our local donation center; whereas, before if I had a bag or two of stuff I could just drop it off. I'm not going to make an appointment to just drop off a few items, so I wait until I have a medium UHaul box full.

    Hey Mins,
    you kept talking about veganism in a way that made me think: Did you ever do really intense research about the topic? Like the reasons people go vegan, be it for compassions sake, for the environment, their health and what not. The whole thing of being compassionate to all beings, not just human, but also all non-human animals, could really ring well with your intention to be a compassionate human being. Also, you could say it rings with minimalism in a way that you minimize your impact on the planet, exploitation and exploitation.
    I've gone vegan for all those reasons and (at least for me) it really rings in harmony with the minimalist intention and compassion towards not all living beings. A great resource is "Earthling Ed" on RUclips, who makes a lot of informative videos on a plethora of different reasons people go vegan.

      Thank you for your comment and point you bring up about "veganism". Whether someone is "V" or not, they are no harm in reducing one consumption of a meal, because it really does have an environmental impact.

      Veganism is a form of a fast. It is not healthy long term, particularly if you are going to have children. Check out the very good articles in the Weston Price Foundation.
      You might try Vegetarianism, in which you do eat eggs, honey, and dairy. Or Pescatarianism where it's those, plus sustainably caught fish.
      One of the most important things you can do for the environment is to eat and use only organic products. These avoid glyphosate, pesticides, and artificial chemical food additives like neurotransmitters, antibiotics and hormones, and genetically modified plants and animals. This is for your family's health, but also the families of farmers and harvesters, and those working in factories to manufacture, handle, and transport, the toxic chemicals. Many of these chemicals are sensitizers, which can cause cancer in both humans, animals, and plants.

      ​@@ideoformsun5806 From an environmental standpoint, eating animal foods in any form uses more land, water and food than a plant-based lifestyle and produces way more GHGs, as far as I know of.
      From a health standpoint, a plant-based lifestyle can absolutely be healthy as long as you take care of the macro- and micro-nutrients, which is as important in a plant-based lifestyle as any other.
      Ethically, I cannot logically say that I love animals on the one hand side and exploit, harm and slaughter them on the other, be it directly or indirectly. Modern agricultural species are far from what they were before humans bred them how they needed it, which (for example) you can also tell by the way we "need" to milk cows for they would otherwise suffer from mastitis.
      Of course, promoting a vegan lifestyle is connected to change, but farmers claiming they would lose everything because of those pesky vegans is a bold overstatement. There are organisations supporting farmers transitioning from animal farming to plant farming (I hope you get what I mean, foreign english).
      I do not claim veganism being easier than carnism, but taking a closer look at what you eat, your macro- and micro-nutrients, may have a positive impact on your health. I am very aware of the various claims against veganism, though I still promote it and for the sake of the environment, my body and the animals lives, I live this way consciously and am very content with it. I don't want to force anyone to anything they don't want but encourage to question what is "normal" and whether there might be an alternative.
      PS: Health and diet are broad topics, with results somethimes difficult to understand and interpret. They both are topics of conflict among many as many humans do not get the same information the same way, bubbles are created by the way we live, search and browse online. Looking past them onto another point of view is hard although it is important to get as many different opinions on a topic as possible.

My hope is that if anyone makes a claim that one would do there own do diligence to see for themself what's the truth. Thanks for your comment.       Vegan is not better for the planet. Don't believe everything you see on the internet. It's a smokescreen. The real harm to our planet is toxic factory farming, and using mining products to replace good stewardship of our soil.
      People could choose to eat less meat, but nobody is watching every bite you eat. You can listen to your body and your instincts and follow what generations of your family have considered good to eat.
      You can't force all people to eat zero meat. But you can focus on moderation, and quality, and reducing suffering. Celebrate your choices while we still have them.
      I was vegetarian for 15 years. Macrobiotic for a year after that, and vegan for a year after that. It is good for some things, but I didn't do well on a vegan diet. I had serious health problems from it, that are long lasting. And don't tell me I didn't do it right. I researched it for many months before switching over, and I had the money to do it right.
      I'm trying to tell people to be careful what dogma you follow. Nothing has to be absolute or forever. You might try eating meat only on weekends, or keep it to 3 ounces per day.

    Love the nutrition talk! It is so so important to look into the quality of the food we eat, not the quantity.
    The benefits of the gelatine or e.g. bone broth are that all the nutrition and collagen in it will help to rebuild your gut lining, which in turn will help with better absorption of the nutrients from the food you are eating, and healthy gut lining will decrease indigestion, food sensitivities and few other things.
    As for the yoghurt, especially homemade it is always a great thing! Fantastic that you are making your own 1 :)
    I would add that yoghurt normally would have about 2 strains of bacteria, where kefir has somewhere about 17 or 18 different ones. Fermented foods have a usually higher diversity of bacteria, not always that bacteria will repopulate your gut microbiome, but the amazing thing is that even when some of them don't stay in your gut, they will go through your digestive tracks and help to collect and eliminate toxins and add on to healing of your gut :)
    And 70% of our Immune System lives in our gut so it's super important to take good care of it, 90% of our serotonin is produced also in our gut - more serotonin = being happier :) xxx
    PS. We are or different, so different things work for different people. Always tune in and check what aligns and tune into your bio-individuality.

    I love you guys but I'm having second thoughts about all the supplement recommendations. Sounds anything but simple and wholesome to me. Aren't they highly processed? Wouldn't you get all the necessary micronutrients just by eating the 'right' foods? Would appreciate your thoughts on my thoughts :)

    “Switch the name and you change the neighborhood.” Lol Our city has tried that. There’s a part of town everyone calls "The War Zone,” and now it’s called the international district or something like that. But all of us really know it’s still The War Zone. Oh I’m in Albuquerque, one of the top ten most dangerous cities in the US. Thought I’d mention that because me writing The War Zone down made me realize how hard core it sounds lol.

      Hmm similar thing in Seattle. They tried to name the central district or CD the "Central Area" (mid-lightrail-gentrification a few years ago) and when I heard it on the radio I was just like, "whut." Trying to make it sounds nicer lol.

    Kids can be moody but I think they get more of an individual personality around 7. Something about brain development at that age, they learn to say no more, they become more skeptical of things. It's the big kid age. I remember gaining the ability to just question stuff a lot more around 6-7.
    Haha bacteria are vegan. There's no way to avoid bacteria and you wouldn't want to anyway.

    We had to move and had our packing party twice: once for our initial move in Dec, again in July. Even after we had thrown stuff away the first time, we still filled 4, yes 4 20' CoolBoxes!!! We'll be getting rid of most of our stuff as we had to downsize & there's 7 of us plus 2 dogs in a tiny 3/1! We facilitated Dave Ramsey courses for 7 yrs, we wish that you guys were part of it back then. Thanks for your insight help for people like us!

    I'm stuffocated by my son's belongings. He's 13 and collects everything. I can't even talk him into letting anything go. Frustrating and annoying.

      Maybe stop buying him stuff. My stepson was getting spoiled rotten between mom's house, dad's house, and grandparent's houses. We realized it one year when he was saying, "I want..., I want..., I want" before Christmas, and then on Christmas, "I got..., I got..., I got..." We decided we didn't want to add to that, so now he only gets one item and it's always useful, a book we can read together, clothes he absolutely needs, bedding for his room. He didn't like it at first, but now I think he respects us for not trying to buy his love. Not saying you're doing that, but don't contribute to his problem. ❤

      I am dealing with cleaning out a lifelong hoarder for the second time in 10 years. It's really bad. Hoarding is lifelong and progressive, and usually starts very young. If you wait too long to address why he is saving everything, it might become a worse issue, and is much harder to deal with once the habits become entrenched in his personality. If he has the tendency to hoard, learn a bit about how to handle hoarding, and maybe consider getting some help for him with dealing with anxiety, or ADD, or OCD, or depression. Sometimes just a Life Skills coach or class will be enough.
      If you just throw things away behind his back, or shame him or judge him for saving things, you can trigger actual hoarding, and make it much worse. In that case, you aren't really helping him to figure out how to handle his things, you are just doing it for him, and he could get even more anxious.

    How does one tell their girlfriend to stop with all the Amazon, Sephora, Costco, and Disney packages/bags that are cluttering up the house? I get that when we die we can’t take our money with us, but everywhere I look there’s a bag filled with groceries, an unopened box of toys for the kids, expired sports drinks, unused clothes, etc. She “stocks up” so much that the things she bought on the previous trip get forgotten. I don’t know what to do.

    I have been thoroughly enjoyi'g your podcast for several years now, and I find it brings a lot of value to my life in general (I have adopted a lot of minimalist principle and feel lighter in a lot of aspects). However, I feel this particular episode bordered pseudo science at some points (the parts about supplements in particular)... I just wanted to bring this criticism that I hope is constructive and I say in all respect towards you and your work that I feel this type of discourse is a little bit inappropriate for someone with such a large influence as you two... I still support your message and will continue to enjoy your podcasts though !

      @@almendramdch5382 Agreed. I love these videos but there were far too many mentions of "if you're vegan" and, "I'm a part of the 99.4% of the world who aren't vegan ". "If you're a vegan like .6% of the population." We get it, dude. Mention us less...your food choices have nothing to do with our values....and they're that...they're values...it's not a whim diet. It's a deeply held set of beliefs.
      I know it's unintentional but mentioning us while talking about eating raw brains ...is wildly unnecessary and kind of offensive.
      I'm 100% for them sharing their success stories about what helps them but that can be done outside of mentioning a minority population's belief system.
      We're used to being in a majority non-vegan world, we can hang or watch another video. The world around us already does and it's exhausting...I just want to declutter my garage, man.
