This is such a geat and straight forward video. Im looking to buy this lens and just havent made up my mind if the extra money is worth it for the L series lens or not. Also you made me really hunry with the cooking portion of video! Your photography work is amazing!
I've had one for years, and I love it. ( In fact I was using it yesterday on insects. ) When used with LIVE VIEW and a tripod, one can get razor sharp pix!
The old version is a bit capricious on old bodies, like 5d2. My copy misses often, and not in a consistent, predictable way, but rather randomly, so adjusting is mostly useless. On a mirrorless camera, it's a much more stable lens. And I find the R6's stabilization quite useful down to semi-macro distances. However, I have used this lens very often on 5D2 as a portrait lens, and against the sun too, I like this flare. And this combination made many photos in motion and static, suitable for uploading to the stock, despite all the shortcomings. But here we should thank not the camera and the lens, but my and the model's patience, because we did many takes to please the god of large numbers and somehow, rather purely by chance, get photos in focus. 😁 I didn't have 100 2.8 L, but from what I know, this is apparently a more stable lens. However, it's all the same with mirrorless cameras. If a DSLR accidentally hits an object in motion, a mirrorless camera accidentally misses. Last year I lived in a village where there were a lot of cats and taking a series of photos so focus is right in the eye of a moving cat, for the R6 and EF 100 2.8 USM macro is just another Tuesday.
Regarding the different focus points in the food photography video, it may be backfocusing. Had this issue with a lens I bought recently. You can correct for it in camera with new canon cameras.
Great video, I'm looking to upgrade to the L version from the old USM, this review was very helpful :) Looks like you need to do some AFMA adjustments with one of the lenses to take care of that problem with focusing - luckily the 6D Mk II has that feature built in!
Why u plan to upgrade? I'm having a 24-70 f2.8 n planning to have something with good Bokeh. So considering 85 1.8 as it fits d budget. But since it's not L series thinking to go for it or choose something else.. mainly for portriats
Thank you for your great work, getting the old one as I only need it for still photography on tripod/indoor use only, so can do without the weather seal and stabilization. : )

hi very good video. I wonder about the older version of the 100mm macro how will it work on a crop? Won't it be too long or unusable for a portrait? I thought I would buy a classic 85 1.8 or 100 2.0 but I was fascinated by this macro
salam Omar, great video man keep it up.. I want to ask about cameras, the 6D mark II is in the same price range of the Sony a7 III, which one you think is better in terms of overall image results ? thank you
I bought a little Sony a6500 to see if I like Sony line of camera, and quality wise I think they both are good but its about the features for me. I can record vids, pictures and web cam all in one. So see what is best bang for you buck. I don't know if ill go full Sony since I already invested in canon though.
Depends. There are a lot of good adapter from canon to Sony so even when you are heavily invested in canon lenses you can still use them, for me just look at the features and go from that. But for me I’d go Sony just so I could try mirrorless lenses as well.
Enjoyed your post, I have the old 100 macro as well as well as these vintage: EF-L 28-70mm 2.8; EF-L 17-35; EF 75-300 4-5.6 IS & EF-L 70-200 2.8 which one should I keep or shall I sell it & get the new ones Thank you.

Hey Villiam, As I tested both L and non L last year, I almost remember they hold the same image quality, while the non L is more sensitive to lens flare. If you're shooting macro on a tripod or have enough light, the non L is a good option though. If you're doing macro for fun, Save yourself some money and attach your extension tubes to a 50mm lens. Check this one ruclips.net/video/u-xWMPYPI7I/видео.html
I've watched this video ruclips.net/video/fT1fcwMu8jY/видео.html couple months ago, and bought Canon FD NEW 28mm f2.8 (40 years old lens) to try macro on macro like the video addressed. Unfortunately, the focus area is very narrow same as I'm using extension tubes.
A. Giordano there is no macro lens that can do all the food , video and vlogging. Im not expert in APSC canon cameras. But try to find a zoom lens starts from wide to medium or long telephoto

This is what I was looking for man!! Thanks a lot!!! I will be buying the old one today. Hopefully it works well with the A7III and Sigma 11. I will let you know how it goes :)
Thanks. I'm using the new version on a C100 mkII as I'm basically into video. Planning to get a second camera for B-roll which is why I was aking about the 600D. I'll probably jump for the 80D to keep the same crop factor as many of my lenses are EF-S.
