- Hey Everyone,
In this video, I share my experience of green laning in Derbyshire with my partner Mike. We both rode a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411, a versatile bike that can handle any terrain.
I'm not a natural offroader as you know, but I wanted to challenge myself and see the beautiful scenery of Derbyshire.
Mike was my guide and he showed me some of the toughest green lanes in the area. It was a struggle, but also a lot of fun!
Watch the video to see how we did and what I learned along the way. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more videos like this!
I hope you enjoy this vlog!

Brilliant Kate, I’m really impressed with you going on those lanes. I wouldn’t even attempt some of them!
Mike is great at talking you through them, he’s so calm
Well done, you should be proud of yourself
Always love your content Kate - I like you share the difficulties as well as the easy rides, good job!
Just watched a 2nd time, my thoughts...! The faster you ride, the less time the wheels are on any one spot thus, you're less likely to slip on wet roots, greasy mud or get the wheel caught on twigs usw. It needs courage to do so, but ultimately improves your "uprightness" lol.
I started in my early teens with Motocross and sometimes miss it, but age and age-related problems put a stop to it in my 40s!
Only requirements for green laning are; courage and concentration just like on the road and track..., but a higher level of fitness is required for green laning. Oh, a lot of practice is also nessassary!! Good luck.
I vividly remember getting started riding off road and doing and feeling exactly as you did up the rocky lane. Your road skills are fabulous and I'll bet you'll be flying up that lane like it was paved in no time.
Thanks 😊
I bought an older KLR650 to get into off-road riding, since I've been a street rider with the occasional gravel road ridden when I had to. I decided it wasn't for me, but I tried it! It made me love and appreciate road riding more. There are lots of ways to enjoy motorcycling riding!
Well done Kate, you did damn good. The more you do, the more you will relax and it becomes easy. Nice one.👍
I've seen so many of your videos in a relatively short space of time, and they're all great so far. Good stuff!
Kate, that was amazing... Look at Mike, even he has his feet down... climbing rocky ascents like this is really tough. The RE Himy has an awesome engine for hill climbs, is a great bike for them... but they are still hard, even on a great bike, we can see how steep that was.
My hugest tip for you from watching this (am only half way in so far) is to lose the face mask under the helmet... you'll get more oxygen so will be able to breath better... and if this is a side of biking you want to do more of... get an ADV helmet or even better an MX helmet.... if you can breath, you can make your body do tremendous things!
Righty, on with the rest of the vid...
Regarding the TRF being secretive, I do get what folk say but my local group are always offering rides to new members and wanna be members. The Green Road Map is well worth the membership fee alone. All the people I have met through the TRF have been super friendly and open to share routes etc.... but I think a lot of folk don't realise the fun that can be had making your own routes and finding new lanes to ride... Since joining the TRF, I've learnt how to plan routes, and even lead them... have met so many new bikers by getting involved too.
FANFOOKINTASTIC Kate... Am just gonna go watch part 2. If you don't mind, I'll probs share this video series on my FB page... are you making a playlist of the day?
Doing better than last time. Proud of you Kate 👍🏻
Very well done Kate and Mike. I bet you was worn out when you got home. 👏👏
You did really well there Kate, better than I think I would do. Well done.
Well done Kate 👍🏼. Proper tires would have helped tremendously. If you loosen the grip on the bars, you’ll conserve a lot of energy. Looking forward to the next video.
Aww well done for facing your fears and giving it a go !
It's not easy and very tiring off road riding.
Great support and advice from Mike.
Look forward to Pt.2
Good job Kate! Not an easy bike to take off-road - you did well x
Thanks Jade 🤣🥰
Well done for showing the difficulties that you faced on the ride, not just showing the easy parts. Good to show the full realities of the rides not just highlights
A fantast day with fantastic weather and some good lanes to start on, before the "real" fun starts. All in the capable hands of Mighty Mike. Good on ya for having a go... bet you slept well that evening.
You will get there Kate. You will be great once you're past the panic breathing, which interferes with clear thinking. I went through it in the 80s.
That lane with all the rocks was a nightmare i'm not surprised you dropped it !! fair play for pushing on through with it.
BREATHE, relax, momentum is your friend - peaks is my back yard, wonderful riding
Hi Kate, You did great! Next time try a lighter bike, with nobblies and remember momentum is your friend! I am based in Australian and my little 250 KTM weighs 104 kgs. Anything heavier is hard work to take bush. Love the channel.
‘ I think it’s more blindly following and hope for the best….’ 😂👍
At least I'm honest 🤣🤣🤣
Fair play for putting yourself out your comfort zone and pushing yourself! Very admirable. Lucky to have Mike with you for some free guidance too! Keep practicing, you will learn to love it....I think lol.
Very well done you kept going thats the main thing.
Some tough bits there… well done!
Great job Kate! That looked seriously tough with the mud and rocks.
If in doubt gas it. Well jealous, looks like great fun. Next month wanna see you do same routes on the teneree. Fair play mate, love seeing u progress out of your comfort zone
BZ Kate, that was brilliant, little himmy's can handle most stuff and very friendly for beginners off roading
incredible , how the topographie change ...that matsch (much) 🤗
Gosh well done Kate, think you needed a trials bike for some of them sections lol, you certainly do push yourself 🥰
I remember when i first tried something like this, I was totally out of my comfort zone but i persevered and found i enjoyed it, well done Kate you have to something about you to even try this. Its the rutts that catch you out they can vere a different direction you want go and buggers up, all good fun thou.
Never mind the wine and chocolate! I'm surprised Mike isn't in the back bedroom after that ride 🤣. Seriously though Kate, well done for sticking it out and, let's face it you only had one tumble 🤔(up to now).
'Up to now' being the operative phrase 🤣
Good riding Kate! I laughed at those being called "green lanes" I think they should be called something more like "turkey trails" lol. I found myself getting into places of being out of my comfort zone last summer on a holiday I took last summer that was just over 8000Km. There was about 1000 km of it that was pushing my comfort zone with my heavily loaded Africa Twin. It was , wet, rough and "slippy". I will do that trip again in a couple years to actually reach the Arctic Ocean like originally planned, this past summer there was abnormally rainy when I was there so I fell short of my destination by about 420km.
Cliffhanger noooo 😮 Can't wait for NEXT EPISODE 👏👏 Brilliant.
Tuesday 10am - Not too long to wait! :)
Solid advise well put mike.
Iitchy boots has been at it for ages and still rides to slow on technical bits. Its a big mental block to get around. Faster being safer and easier.
Well done kate could see the improvements further you went.
Amazing job well done kate ,least you didn't hurt yourself this time. I was routing for u all the way 💓 big girl pants on
mike is very good
Look forward to next video
Well done Kate. Bloody hard work that.
I've just bought a 2nd hand Himmy and am also taking tentative steps off road.
Look forward to seeing how you progress. 👍
"With faster comes more pain when crash. Right?" Feeling your frustration. 😃
Great video Kate! I find it hard to deal with cramp when I'm driving a car, I bet it's much harder on a bike. Well done! Look forward to the next video.👊
Wow you did amazing Kate, and you rode past our house , I live at the top of greenshall lane ( the first really rocky one you rode up ) 😁 you went past our house,, if I’d know I’d have offered you a brew 😬😬
Great to see all my local greenlanes well done , and on those tyres as well 😁 👏
Good on ya Kate! 🙂
That rocky lane, was not easy, and you did really well.
Himalayan's are surprisingly capable, aren't they?
Mine runs, Mitas E-07 (50/50) tyres, and when I go off road,
I usually drop tyre pressures to 15 psi, makes a huge difference on grip.
Looking forward to the next episode 🙂👍
Nice one Kate. These blokes make it all look so bloody easy and its not !!!! I wobbled out if my drive on my new bike yesterday in front of the neighbour. I looked like i right newby.... why oh why do i do that 😂 then i practically cried and said to my hubs that im too old for this...continued on for 70 odd miles in the howling wind and rain. Couldnt see a damned thing. Made it home, loved it, no one died 😂 slept all afternoon 😂😂😂
Well done Kate, you did really well, it’s quite a work out I know, that stone hill not easiest and you did it. Well done.
I'm just happy to see very experienced riders making the same mistake as me noob. Forgetting about the blinker 😅
Hi Kate. It might be because I`m a soft southerner, but I can`t see any fun in that at all. Just confirms what a great invention tarmac was. I would be on my ear at the first rock ! Sunny days and twisty tarmac, that'll do.
Good effort crocodile. Issues were mostly confidence levels. You seemed to do a little better when not distracted by Mike's petit derrier 😂.
I'm only human 🤣
Well done Kate , I was with you there Iv,e got the same bike , and at 5 ft 7 know how it feels on the rough . Dangling legs syndrome.
Great video love it
A part of a fun day in the sun. What's for lunch in the unanswered question.
Slippery leaves and hidden obstacles will make the ride interesting but the RE H can handle it.
Epic riding; you both.
Another enjoyable video. Have you ridden the G310GS for a comparison?
I haven't! Need to try one 😊
That looks like hard work 😓 you did well to get through those lanes
Hi five indeed, Kate. 👍👍👍👍Give Mike a little kick from me for waiting that long. Just to teach him. 😁
Kate: “because I’m not very good”. Come off it. I’d have been in A&E 5 minutes in with a handlebar where you don’t want a handlebar!
Also, Mike says he’s not a motorbike enthusiast then makes an absolute mockery of my ability 😂
Leaving kenya next week, ive been on a honda ace cb125x, be in uk for a month, everything in me wants to buy a bike for my time there, im wet everyride in kenya because elnino.....dryseason lol😅. Love the content.
Well done Kate!! Can you both come over to France and give me some lessons??😊
User, that was a workout! 🫁
Sheeeesh it was!!
I think you were brill Sweetie, I used to love that sorta riding many many moons ago, I'm too old and disabled now, a gravel car gives me the collywobbles LOL
Well done Kate. I was getting stressed just watching it.
it takes a lot of upper body strength to ride those rocky lanes, especially on those big ol lump adventure bikes!
I was broken for 2 days after haha
Getting better at this Kate! Very nice lanes, can't wait for the next part. By the way, any chance you could link up to Tom's channel? Couldn't find it in the search :
youtube.com/@NorthWestEnduro?si=JTzVXWKThv_IG9oq enjoy!!! 😊
enjoyable watch.... makes me wish I had not sold my Himalayan...
Why do you put yourself through it Kate after your trials and tribulations up Rivi a few months back sticking to the black stuff seems so much wiser to me.
Well done awesome effort 😊👍
Thanks a lot 😊
Looks and sounds like hard work, i think a chiropractor would come in handy. It did look like fun though👍
The script of every other Usernamekate video: Kate roars into focus, puts the backside of her hand on her brow, saying something like : “I do declare! What a weak creature I am!” and the rest of us going: “YES PLEASE!” 😂
Need to put some workout graft in! haha
@@UsernameKate See my next entry. More a matter of tension then condition. Not that a bit of workout wouldn’t help. Even sis H. beats you to the top of a hill. 😁
@@UsernameKate New video series suggestion - 'Username Kate gets ripped' with you heaving kettle bells about while an ex army PTI yells at you, 1 video a week every week :-).
That might be the only way to hold my ass accountable and motivate me at this rate 🤣
@@fat_biker 🤣🤣🤣
Well done Kate 👏👏 you have a good teacher in Mike 🤗😉
Thanks Graham, and he is great :)
You did so well!
I think Mike owes you some wine and chocolate for taking you on that rocky path! 😂
That did make me giggle a bit you looked petrified, you gave it ago that's what counts 👍
Haha always trying!
Ok 👏🎉
Username mike likes to put you to the test! Shows how confidence inspiring the himmy is with tractor ability and low seat. And you had rubbish stock tyres. Perfect bike for you if green laning takes your fancy. Great way to keep fit i find. I use green lane association trailwise maps as you get reviews on each lane section and as its mainly used by 4x4, the lanes tend to be more accessible. Always up to date and exports straight to google maps.
Looked fun! But am biased have the same bike+colour. Not done this yet!
On a more serious note: 7:24 min. “ I am so cramped”. That’s the central problem, isn’t it. This has less to do with condition as it has with the fear of falling. One can actually hear from your breathing in the microphone that the muscular tension restricts your breathing. My tip: Wait for a nice day to go for a ride alone. Select a strip like the earlier ones you already started to find uncomfortable. Keep repeating the very same section until a sense of routine and comfort set in and then start to relax your muscles. By such repetition you start to program that more relaxed mindset into your routine. I know, more easily said then done and smacking more of hard work then fun but I am quite sure it can do miracles. Like I said before: You already have all the skills but would do even better with a bit more confidence in yourself.😘
But i get cramp when I'm not scared of falling 🤔 I think I actually just forget to breath properly and it builds up lactic acid in my muscles.
@@UsernameKate Exactly! I am sure that if you are actually hyperventilating at times. Take this video to your medical practitioner and he will most probably attest it. But all my respect for not ever giving up. Living the dangerous life seems to be a very big part of your personality. Hence my jokes about all of us loving it.
@@UsernameKate After rereading, just to make sure that you do not get me wrong: I am not suggesting you constantly hyperventilate but that moment you simply have to stop in this video at least comes very close to it. At other times (leg) cramps may be more related to posture, like constantly riding on the balls of your feet. 😘
Update: doing a room out in my front room now. Toe cramp central!!
@@UsernameKate I’d love to come and assist you in any way you’d find acceptable but alas you already have a perfect Mike for that. As far as the cause goes: I again think it’s psychological. You have already confessed zooming around is more your thing then doing maintenance. 😁
Great teamwork and amazing lanes. Our country really is incredible. I can't even pretend is try them. 😅
Shame about the levers on bikes still not being adjustable. I have a left hand injury (not bike related) and struggle with my cruiser levers. Can't find after market either. I have actually thought about getting one fabricated.
Ride safe, LJ
Great upload, you did really well!! Will you and Mike be at the ABR festival this year?
It was slippery walking some of those tracks that day, you looked a bit “done in “when I saw you at the gate.😊
haha I was frazzled!
# 홧팅입니다 🍒👍!!
That looked like hard work. Well done. 👍. Defo not for a wimp like me.
Great effort Kate.
I think as Mike said a bit more momentum might have helped. Also, did you try standing up on the pegs - can help control and balance?
Mike truly is a off road king.... But ive been wanting to say before anyone goes "Ooooarrrr I see that kate has taken to off roading, she cant do what my Ducati multistrada can do while i sit here in my ducati attire smoking 8 packets of cigars and praise the tory party", do note kate is doing pretty well off road for someone who doesnt like going off road very much, good on you kate, im going to search the comments to see if theres been any mike pye bait comments on bad commenters.
You managed it very well considering the bike basically had road tyres. My tip would be for you to lead with Mike following. Then you get to choose your own line, which will increase your confidence and Mike can see you 100% of the time and give advice before you get into difficulty. Plus if needed, he can get to you quicker if you need help.
Just watched this Kate . I've been greenlaning for years and I think you did OK. I see your other greenlaning video . One thing I would say before you go again. Get a smaller lighter bike .,you'll enjoy it more . I promise.
I’m with you. All that slippery muddy wetness nah. Lol.
I'm in the market for an adventure bike. I will take you and Mike on some more sensible routes once I do!
Well at least you enjoyed the view.
It's not easy, but speed is your friend believe me ,but you did a good job
It's not as easy as it looks. 10 out of 10 girl.
Get yourself an old XT225 Serow so you can get your feet down and paddle if necessary. And relax and breathe ! lol Good first attempt though !
As fast as possible and as slow as necessary 👍👍
"I can't get over that view........" Nor can we. Thanks for indicating where it approximately is (Derbyshire-On-Stoke Lower Hampstead East Anglia Newton Abbot Brown Betty.....)
I left a few road signs in for people haha!
Good Lord Kate! That was a nasty pitch! Do that a few times a week and you’ll be giving Itchy Boots a run for her money. I do think you should make Mike sleep in the driveway tonight though.
Well done, just a bit more practice and You can join in some rally event... Good luck...
Good effort....Not an off road rider (& my CB1000R not best suited ) .
I ride a cyclocross bike on muddy & mixed terrain.
Watching vid me thinks looser arms might help.
The rocky sections would intimidate me too. If getting into this I would practice on easier sections.
Not a helicopter in sight Kate 😉
Thanks 👍
if you keep up momentum (speed) and lean back a bit, there is less pressure at the front. Its easyer for the bike to find it's way. you become more of a passenger, only guiding the main direction with you weight. if you are trying to force it in a direction, it cost a lot of energie. but rocks are the hardest in my opinion, unless you have custom suspension for that.
Makes sense!
Go you good thing Kate! Great vids ^_^
Bit odd to do this on the old nail, though. RE don’t even make these anymore, there’s a new 450 that’s much better in pretty much every way.
It's not out yet in the UK, so you gotta ride the old to compare with the new 😊
@@UsernameKate fair enough :)
I really can't make out anything he's saying, that being said for the second time I know! But I don't feel so bad now seeing how much trouble you're having at your young age, you should have seen me the other day in the ice and snow testing out my new Nobbies on the CT 125. 67 years old pretending I'm 22 isn't working out the way I had hoped😅 ended up pulling a hamstring and getting banged up put the bikes okay !
I definitely want to go green laning one day, my speedmaster is not the bike for it, my previous bike, tiger 900 rally pro, would have been capable. However me being 5’6” and early 60s with no experience and out of shape (well round is a shape lol) it would have been too much for me, I need a new slightly lower crf300 or similar to gain some experience
Did you at any point feel you needed more power? Can't make my mind up to get the new one or get the current one for £2000 less.
Not for this stuff. If you wanna do big miles and are hell bent on motorways to cover miles, that might not be so joyful. But if you're happy to back lane, I found it fine 👍
I think you made hard work for yourself, your getting yourself worked up and anxiety creeping in. If you relax you can think ....
Why didn't I think of that 🤣
@@UsernameKate 😂
Ok. That was funny! Mike hates high fiving.
❤U hello miss Kate43. Peter u have great skills bro
