So, an update on my earlier comment: I just completed the passenger side valve cover replacement along with the full valve train service. Thanks again for your tip on securing the valve cover gasket, worth a gold star! I put a couple of drops of crazy glue where the locating bumps on the gasket are in the back. My tip on a relative pain free job: Move things out of the way! Remove battery and tray, oil filler neck and the transmission control module with bracket. Then move the AC compressor, heater lines ( push these down!) and wiring harness to the ECM (middle and engine side plugs only) out of the way. Tie off lines and wiring with zip ties as far away from the valve cover as you can. Now you have enough room to get to all the bolts and to wiggle the valve cover out and back in. And yes, I also replaced the bolt grommets and oil filler neck gasket ( was all part of the Felpro kit). My magnesium covers are in good shape too, so lucked out there.
If you’re already there, it’s not too bad to install them, just a flat head or mini pry bar or even a small wrench just pops them out and the new ones click in
My 2002 WJ has the magnesium valve covers. I have just replaced my drivers side gasket along with a full valve train service ( new rocker arms, lash adjusters and valve stem seals). Will start the passenger side this upcoming week, wish me luck! Thanks for the tip on securing the gasket! Question: Would the later style wider valve cover gaskets fit on the magnesium covers? In other words, are the gasket grooves the same? Also, if you use a gasket kit, it should include the valve cover bolt grommets. These grommets need to be replaced as well, at least in the magnesium covers (plastic ones too?).
No the grooves are wider in the later valve covers for the wider gaskets. I normally don't replace the bolt grommets as they just hold the bolts in place if the OEM ones are in good shape.
My 2002 has the magnesium covers. I did all the valve adjusters and didn’t know I should change out the covers. I do have a leak I haven’t identified yet.
I've replaced mine twice. Once with Fel pro gaskets and the second time with OEM and they still pour oil down the back of my engine! This is well worth trying. Hope it works!
One thing I've found that works pretty well is Victor Reinzo sealing compound. In this case where they are known to leak I would recommend applying a very thin layer of Reinzo seal. Normally I wouldn't, but in the case of these Jeeps where the valve cover gaskets are known to be problematic I feel it's necessary.
If I had an 04 it probably wouldn't be worth the upgrade to a 05-07, the gaskets are a little bigger on the 05-07 vs. the 04 though. Thanks for the view!

The 4.7L I believe was the overland version!
Those headlights could use a good shine job. 👍
Yeah WJ's seem to be REALLY bad about the headlights!
Gotta put valve cover gaskets on my 04 4.7 with 191K. Trying to decide if I want to do the cam followers at the same time.

It is a good possibility that it is the valve covers, they seem to always want to leak!

I have had good luck with the Mahle brand gaskets
@@TylerPotter yes those are OE quality parts! I use those as well!
Was hoping to see you do the other side.
The passenger side is always such a pain!
My 4.7 1999 model is still running with original value cover no leaks or any problems so far😮😅😊
Nice! That is good to hear! You've got a rare one
Tyler is a 05 plastic cover better than a 04 plastic cover,Thanks

Mine just started to leak.
My passenger side just started.
The passenger side is no fun!
