I learned one trick from this video--flipping the valve cover and pounding out the spark plug tube seal from the top. I pried them out from the bottom with a seal puller, but it wasn't easy! However, the author only did the first one from the top, I believe. Too, I wouldn't do this job without an inch-pound torque wrench. There is a shop manual-recommended pattern for tightening the cover bolts, which should be followed, as well.
Used 53 ft/lb because I missed the conversion. Bolt sheared. Was told that new replacement bolts were rated for 15ft/lbs. So if it is 53in/lb or 4.41ft/lbs then hand tight should be plenty
I found the hardest thing about the driver's side is loosening the dipstick bolt (just because it's hard to get the socket angle right---the main reason I didn't completely remove it). Other than that, and the one fuel-injector electrical connection you have to remove, it's just a repeat of what you already did. You'll breeze through it, Chris. All the best to you!
been watching hundreds of videos on my 2uzfe and this is one of the best for how to. kudos. Music was pretty chill too....besides the bludgeoning of the spark plug gaskets it doesnt look too finicky
Holy ish, this is one of the best repair videos I have ever seen. Great production value, smart editing choices, level of detail, just enough explanation without the typical pontification. A++ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks so much.. I usually don’t watch videos that don’t talk when they are teaching me what to do but I really followed u step by step and my 4Runner is not leaking anymore! Thanks I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed!
Thanks Alyssa, and that's great to hear! ... Yeah, some of my videos I ramble on too much and some I don't talk at all. Depends on my mood I guess. Thanks for the comment. That's great feedback!
Had oil burning smell each time I parked, checked to find oil along both valve covers with it dripping down along heat shields but not a drop on my driveway, so it was a slow leak. Purchased valve cover gaskets and got ready to replace them. When I went to remove the bolts, I found the first one to be very very loose, like almost completely backed out. I checked the others and found a majority of them to be crazy loose. I ended up tightening them all down just to see if that helped and sure enough no more leak. I kept the gaskets in case of further repairs, but that was around 2015 and still no leaks, just a bolt check with every oil change or anytime I pop the hood. 2000 Tundra Limited V8
Knocking this out tomorrow so I thought I might watch a tutorial as a refresher. As soon as I saw you pull into ToG, I knew you were local to Gville! Thanks for the video! 🤛
Video was great and will definitely help when I need to do this. If I may say though, as you found out, never use a power tool to put a bolt back in, and use a torque wrench and specs to tighten bolts down, then check them weekly for a month to make sure they stay properly torqued. have a great day!
Everything went great, also noted, some of these 4.7l DIY's have guys cutting off the drivers side HP fuel line going to the rail, per yours, unnecesary and correctly so, thanks again!@@FamilyFriendlyDIY
very cool to have watched this.. I was always interested in this ,,my 2001 tundra is going in the shop and just hoe they have the same skills involved .. this will be the first time for my original owned 2001.. just going to make sure I use a leaf blower and air nozzle pressure to clean any seeds etc before taking it to the garage shop for such repairs recommended locally..ty for sharing ..great instructional
This was a great vid. Loved the editing skills tbh. Kept me engaged, and focused along through some of the suspense. As for the gaskets, what is the best practice when applying the FIPG? Should you let it sit for 5 minutes then place the cover back on, let it sit longer, place cover on the engine then wait 20 minute, then tighten down? What’s the proper procedure. We all start somewhere. When I got married our truck broke down and I couldn't afford a mechanic ... so I bought a repair manual and muddled through it.
I’m blown away by this video, I have been dreading the valve cover gasket’s on my sequoia and can’t seem to find a mechanic that I can trust to do it right like this. Are you by any chance in Pennsylvania 😂 I will pay you to do this job
A lot of videos, including this one, speed the video too fast to catch important moments, even when slowed down to the lowest setting. Case in point, specifically, what kind of rig did you use to remove the hard-to- access oil dipstick retainer (bracket) bolt? It looked like a swivel was involved somehow with a deep socket but didn't look like a universal joint. A lot of us are on a budget and need to plan out our parts, tools, and supply purchases carefully in advance before starting projects, especially those with just one vehicle that just can't easily run to the store for purchases mid-stride. Otherwise, I thought your video was superb. Thank you!
Great video. Most informative I've seen - direct and easy to follow. One Question - that tube of toyota goop is only used on the half-moons and those four corner areas as pointed out. It is not used over or in conjunction w/ the valve cover gasket? Just making sure!?
Thanks. Good question John. I've only seen pictures of the 5.7, but it looks like it might be a slightly more complicated process. Maybe someone else will see this comment and give a more definitive answer.
How essential are those valve cover bolt grommets? The dealer isn’t open today and I don’t feel like waiting. I’m probably good just to make sure they’re torque spec, right?
RIDGID R8224K www.ridgid.com/us/en/12v-palm-impact-screwdriver ... It's a little slow and not very strong compared to most other impacts (won't sink deck screws), but it's definitely faster than wrenching everything.
It has about 230k miles on it. I bought it right when it turned over 200k. The original owner said he was running Mobil 1. I’ve continued with the same oil at 5 to 7k mile intervals. I’m probably going to switch it over to Kirkland full synthetic at the next change though, and to supertech filter. I personally believe it is as good as Mobil 1. Thanks for the comments, James!
7 ft-lbs for the valve covers -- if that doesn't work, the gasket might be pinched or defective, or the little half-moons might not be seated properly.
Can anyone tell me how to get the spark plug seals to seat correctly? When I bolt down the cover, the first few seat pretty well, but the second two keep snagging. I'm worried I'll have to set this truck on fire in a screaming rage.
Update: I had, hilariously, installed the seals upside down. If you get the autozone brand (blue) make sure the cone-shaped side is facing you; the sides of the rings with the channel needs to be the side pushed into the holes. Test fit the rings on the spark plug tubes if what I'm telling you is unclear. I only ruined 2 rings and was able to put them in bare-handed. They came out relatively intact with a gentle pry from a flat-blade screwdriver.
You can, and it might work just as well, Matthew. It's just the Toyota and Honda brand sealants seem to have an ironclad reputation, so I'd trust them more for the long-term. Hope this helps.
Excellent and detailed video, I just subscribed. I do have one question though because it went by pretty fast and your hand was blocked by a hose. What was the area or part you put the sealant on after the 2 half moon pieces? It was around the 12:53-13:05 mark?
Thanks! ... those were the corners near the front of the engine. Gaskets have a hard time sealing sharp corners, so a little dab of sealant in those two spots on each side.
I want to say they were around $200 US, Hunter. But to be honest, the Haynes or Chilton's manuals are much easier to use. Unless I was fully restoring a vehicle, or ran across something I just couldn't find in the other manuals, I don't think I'd buy the official shop manual again.

To be honest I haven't seen a better mechanic explanation than this! Thanks so much✌🏼💯

I replaced the pcv and the rubber grommet disintegrated into pieces. Replace this too at the same time.

I can confirm that the Torque is 53 inch pounds, and a all around great video.

Also, I do have the vc bolt grommets!
Extremely well done. I wish all mechanic videos were this good!

As for the gaskets, what is the best practice when applying the FIPG? Should you let it sit for 5 minutes then place the cover back on, let it sit longer, place cover on the engine then wait 20 minute, then tighten down? What’s the proper procedure.
Your help is super appreciated as I am tackling this now!
Hope reply isn't too late. You want to put the cover on immediately. You don't want the FIPG to skin over.

I just used a 3 inch extension on the socket wrench. No swivels.
You can change the playback speed on the video to near slow motion if it’s too fast. Just go to settings and playback speed.
This guy is a legit mechanic! He used his ratchet as a hammer. 🤣😂 jk great video. Thanks!

Nice. Am I to understand that the 4.7 and 5.7 are basically the same regarding Valve covers? the 5.7 just having more displacement.

Did you give time for the silicone to cure before starting your vehicle?
Yes. I didn't start it until the next day.

Sounds like he might have left a coil-on-plug unplugged, or one (or it's wiring) was damaged. You might want to check all of the wiring connectors.
