What a fine rendition of this song by a handful of the masters of several genres. Tony's voice had long gone but his picking remained legendary to the end.
Tony Rice seems otherworldly sometimes. So fluid and every second is packed with complex note structure. A true gift and a reference for all acoustic guitar players.
Listening to Shady Grove is like visiting an old friend. Tony Rice opens the door to this familiar house and welcomes you inside. Then the other musicians come and shake your hand warmly and the party begins. You start to move with the rhythm and the guitarists take turns dancing with you. The mandolin is giddy like a jolly drunken fool and gives you some of his moonshine to drink and now you’re in heaven, then the violin pulls you by the elbow and spins you around while leading you back to the guitarists and Tony Rice is there to bring you back to earth, slowing down the dance as he leads you out the door but not before giving you one last hug with his guitar. But you wish this party could go on forever.
The pure joy Tony gets out of hearing that fiddle solo from the 2:10 mark to 2:40 mark!!! He yells YEA MAN!! a few times throughout. That’s what music is all about, bringing joy. To think after all the times he has played that tune and with The Who’s who of players he’s played with, a great fiddle solo still gets him excited!! Love it
This may be the greatest bluegrass tune of all time, at least this rendition is, thanks to the mastery of these talented gentlemen. I never get tired of listening to it. Thank you so much for posting this incredible, incomparable masterpiece of a performance.
Tony's adaptation of traditional song structure opened a gate and created a path and that others still walk today. The audience "gets it" and respond in such a positive way that other musicians are afforded the luxury of experimentation in the acoustic world. Amazing.
There aren't enough thumbs-up to express how much I love this. The looks on Tony's face throughout the video are priceless. I've loved this arrangement of Shady Grove since the Quartet album was released, but for some reason I only discovered this video now. Thanks so much for posting.
I never tire of hearing this. I listen to it while I work in my high stress job, and this particular version of Shady Grove, so fluently played by these outstanding musicians, is so comforting and soothing, helps me keep my sanity.
Tony Rice must be the King of Bluegrass, the man is a total legend. Well done to Peter and Tim these guys should come to Ireland we would love to see them, Thanks Guys!
HA!!!!! I'd cheat another 9 "likes" for this one if I could :) lmao that's so well put!!! maybe........ sitar? he is one of the most incredible yet so understated musicians ever.
There's about 6 inches of Xmas tinsel hanging out of my cats butt. He could probably play that and make it sound better then most men being paid to play guitar these days!
I love Tony, he is an unquestionable master. But the real genius is Tim O'Brien. He is the whole package, he can make even a broomstick sing. Love this video, so entertaining and instructive. Thank you! Zs
I agree with you about Tim and Tony. And Peter Rowan is not too shabby. Though not flashy, he is always tasteful, and one of the greatest songwriters, and singers in Blue Grass.
Shady Grove my little love. Shady Grove i say. Shady grove my little love. I'm bound to go away. But not i hear these legends play this song. Play on boys.
I was only 5 - 10 miles away from this event when it took place... unbeknownst to me that it was underway. Without undue arrogance, I've always considered myself one of Tony's biggest fans but his venue slipped thru the cracks and I reckon I wanted to cry but it sure made me mad that I missed out on it. Tony -- if you ever chime in on any of this -- we sure miss you... Best wishes... Mike from Fredericksburg.
Thought for a second, "Sounds like the guitar player from the David Grisman Quintet. Oh shit, it IS the guitar player from the DGQ!" Such a distinctive style and tone.
Thanks for posting this unique and entertaining blues, folk, finger-picking, country medley. I searched to find the most recent example of Tony Rice's music endeavors. This is a fine display of his contribution to the music world.
Love Tony Rice and all he's done for bluegrass music. Ditto Tim O'Brien & Peter Rowan! Didn't recognize the mando player, but if he's good enough to be onstage with these guys then his name should be added to the video title. :-)
WOW...... first time hearing this, i had presumed until now this was the "shady grove my little miss, shady grove my darlin'......... we're goin' back to Harlin" song of yore.
Tony suffers from dysphonia (loss of voice), it's an unexplained case. He is very thin, but I don't believe he has cancer. I saw him perform a few weeks ago with Peter Rowan. They were great!
Peter Rowan is one of the best bluegrass vocalists, but I fail to understand why he even takes an instrument on stage. He is pathetic on the guitar. And lazy.
What a fine rendition of this song by a handful of the masters of several genres.
Tony's voice had long gone but his picking remained legendary to the end.
Was looking for Tim O'Brien on either Mandolin or Guitar - finally found him in the shadows on Fiddle. HE is a real wizard as well . . .
Same. Loaded with talent.
Tony Rice seems otherworldly sometimes. So fluid and every second is packed with complex note structure. A true gift and a reference for all acoustic guitar players.
mister emerson i don't think tonny was ever in "fail"
j luc from france !
Deep in my French countryside, I am so sad to learn of the death of Tony, so elegant in his playing and his attitude. RIP
@Johnny Mayson Yup, I have been using kaldroStream for months myself :)

This is definitely one of the BEST versions you will EVER hear. Love the sound of that old Martin and the one and only Tony Rice playing it!

R.I.P. Tony Rice.

Their talent are so good that I miss word.... Greetings from Sweden!!
the word is perfection!
RIP Tony Rice. Thank you.
Love this one on so many levels. The black and white quality is exceptional. Thanks.
four legends in their prime, many generations, same soul
Wondrous pickers and singers elaborating on a simple, beautiful tune. Been listening to most of these cats for 40 years or more.

I put one more!
Mystical song, I’m fascinated by it! Haven’t heard anyone play it this well.
oh this is so good, wish it would never end...legendary
An extraordinary, otherworldly talent.
A host of legends.
I never tire of hearing this. I listen to it while I work in my high stress job, and this particular version of Shady Grove, so fluently played by these outstanding musicians, is so comforting and soothing, helps me keep my sanity.
This is really cool. Putting it in black and white adds to the beauty and intensity of this piece.
Amazing play from Ireland 🇮🇪👏👏👏👏👏
Brilliant!
Tony Rice must be the King of Bluegrass, the man is a total legend. Well done to Peter and Tim these guys should come to Ireland we would love to see them,
Thanks Guys!
Man, i missed that concert.
Wow. They're all amazing but the fiddle player is exceptional.
That's Tim O'Brien. Check him out!
Had to listen to this again, and again. Absolutely brilliant. Now I know where Chris Thile came from, and why... Superb musicianship.
Amazing
Superb.
Hell yeah this is some sweet sweet musique fellas
Just plain wonderful music
Truly elegant!
I miss Tony being able to perform!
Is there a stringed instrument that Tim O'Brien can't play like an a genius?
HA!!!!! I'd cheat another 9 "likes" for this one if I could :)

Absolutely. All these guys are amazing and a huge source of joy and inspiration.

Love the nod between tony and the mando who nodded to peter that it was go time. Spot-on, baller-status communication.
It says that’s Billy Bright but I think it’s Josh Williams, who I know played with Tony and Peter towards the end.
Take it back ….it is Billy.
I love this! And imagine the body of work that Tony Rice has been on.
Shady Grove my little love. Shady Grove i say. Shady grove my little love. I'm bound to go away. But not i hear these legends play this song. Play on boys.
Bluegrass never sounded sweeter than this.
They absolutely stop time.....and expand the dimension

Very good

Look at Mr Tony’s reactions to shadowy Tim O’s breaks!
Thanks for posting this unique and entertaining blues, folk, finger-picking, country medley. I searched to find the most recent example of Tony Rice's music endeavors. This is a fine display of his contribution to the music world.
Marvellous!
Those drawn out growling sounds fiddle players get. So good.
Thanks! That good to hear!
This version totally cooks...
Is there ANYTHING Tim O'Brien CAN'T play????
Great video, Mike... thanks for sharing

Tony, oh Tony RIP
Awesomeness at it's best!!!
WOW...... first time hearing this, i had presumed until now this was the "shady grove my little miss, shady grove my darlin'......... we're goin' back to Harlin" song of yore.
It is that song, just instrumental. Same melody, same name. "Harlan," btw.
It's that song, but bouncing back and forth between two keys
Nice video capture Mike.
ブルーグラス、acoustic jazz、ジャズグラス、Dawgmusic 等呼び方はいろいろあった気がするけど、みなさん基本のビル・モンロー式ブルーグラスをしっかりやったからこその演奏なんでしょうね😉
Sound quality not good, but as soon as they started, I knew I was listening to the masters.
Tony got a quick mention in the Ken Burns doc. I was pissed
i want to see these guys at the hardly strictly oct 3, 4 , 5 sf !!!! PLZ!
rip tony rice
Rice intimate with Music herself

Someday someone needs to tell me where Peter Rowan buys his clothes
Men of Dreaddnaught. Day-um.
Who is that on mando?
That mandolin hardly knew her skirts were lifted.
stupendi.....
Shame the lyrics were not more prominent.
Flat Picking Legend
Spider fingers.
People who listen to this have taste like real taste to had he is dead
wOW! They didn't have color video in 2010! dreadful
