This tune has what I think is one of the most beautiful lines ever written in the English language:" I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face, and the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind". If you have ever been thousands of miles from home, or just wandered the country, or knocked around with no roots, you'll understand.
This is such a great arrangement. Every solo was so melodic. The violinist is an absolute pro. I discovered Tim O’Brien last month and can’t get enough. Such amazing musicianship.
I never liked that song much,.....until now. The best arrangement that I've ever heard, for sure. But then, everything Tim O'Brien puts his hand to is great. Thanks for posting!
I have been to several Tim o Brien concerts in the UK and the one which I remember best is meeting the man at the Fiddle Fest in Baltimore in Cork, being O Brine on my mother's side we got talking where his people came from and mine and so on ,he came over so relaxed and easy going ,I can't say if he joined our session.went to see him perform at night in the main hall , and he spoke again to me awhile and to my friends ,I will always remember his unbelievable mandolin picking , guitar, fiddle and old time banjo , what a talented man JB
Happened onto this yesterday and it simply washed over me. The effortless musicianship is beyond words. This was a beautiful moment for me. As you listen to the breaks or fills during this "happening" the phrase that came to mind was, "less is more" it wasn't about cramming every note they could but placing the right note in the phrase at the right time. Powerful. Thank you Mr.Boris7910
I remember the very first time I read these lyrics. ripped my soul from my body, sent it into the void and yanked it back. wow.. I had to learn to write a story like that. love ya timbo!
You know I would love to see Tim live, but really this is the best seat in the house and I can repeat as often as I like. Definitely my favorite artist, I never get bored he's so eclectic and versatile.
I am Australian and proud of it, all parts, I am proud of everything Australian, especially our music. BUT DAMN, I WISH I WAS Tim O'Brien! Special, oh so special music!
Giants behind her instruments and a real giant song - thanks to John Hartford to get place in my heart forever with this unique melody! What kind of beautiful fiddle breaks....., ooooutsch!
Glen put that in you pipe and smoke it. That's the way it should have always been played.lol.... Just being silly. Just love this video so much. Play it all the time. Tim is simply a genius.
John hartford wrote and recorded this tune....sold it to Glen Campbell ,but retained the rights .....tim does the song proper! Hartford always preached " Play a song to suit yourself, then you are just like anyone else" Thanks O'brien for keeping this tune alive
Man, I do love this version. I have heard this done so many ways and like most of them. This arrangement has that hint of sadness that I like but I absolutely love Glen Campbell's version with hot guitar break.
Check the JH recordings here on yt, the one solo with banjo and shoe shuffle, and a later recording playing fiddle with a whole room of bluegrass greats
It's John Hartford who wrote the song. Glen and John joked about the number of people that thought it was Glen that wrote it. Never a point of contention since there was great respect between the two.
@@lawrencetaylor4101 Thank you for the clarification! I didn’t mean to misattribute. I’m going to tell my best friend and fellow Mando player. Thank you again!
Years ago John Hartford wrote a song that I have always had a soft spot for. Here is Tim O'Brien, Stuart Duncan, Bryan Sutton and others doing "Gentle On My Mind". A tip of the hat to these guys as I always Glen Campbell did the best job. Not now.
Timeless and redone ingeniously by the best in the business. I would add that Glenn and John would be the first to stand and clap to see it done so well! I remember watching them stand up in the middle of the audience playing the song on The Glen Campbell Show for the intro, and it was damn good then as well. I agree with comments below that Duncan is truly the hidden pearl here.
I love everything about Tim O’Brien’s musicianship… and Stuart Duncan is one of my favorite fiddlers for sure. Man I love that fiddle break.
This tune has what I think is one of the most beautiful lines ever written in the English language:" I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face, and the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind". I couldn't agree more. I use to sing this song to my wife and I would get choked up when I came to that line.. Beautiful song...
And the lines before that: "And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone" Just a beautiful, timeless song.
"Though the wheatfields and the clotheslines and the junkyards and the highways come between us..."
So mundane yet so evocative; beautiful lyrics.
Yep
Don’t let the wonderful musicianship make you overlook the beauty of John Hartford’s poetry.
Ear candy of the highest order. Bravo!
This is the best version ever but it's not on Spotify which is the biggest crime I've ever seen committed.
Tim O'Brien with Stuart Duncan and Bryan Sutton, doesn't get any better.
This is such a great arrangement. Every solo was so melodic. The violinist is an absolute pro. I discovered Tim O’Brien last month and can’t get enough. Such amazing musicianship.
Bryan Sutton never misses a lick. Spot on his solo.
The best of the best honoring an awesome John Hartford song!
Making the hairs on me neck stand up. Needed that, thanks Mr Tim and fellers, love you cats.
In my opinion, Tim O'Brien has the consummate Bluegrass voice. Sutton's playing a CANNON!
Bryan Sutton's tasty arrangement and smooth delivery constitutes some of the best flat picking this side of the asteroid belt.
People who put the thumb down on such a marvelous performance can only be complete ignoramuses and are not worthy of it.
Yah, I totally agree. Just impose a fine of 25 Quids on each one. Sooner they’ll learn to appreciate the music.
...and don't have a real life!
You guys are funny, I never even noticed even though I return here daily. They’re somewhere else now. We’re here again for real huh?
I never liked that song much,.....until now. The best arrangement that I've ever heard, for sure. But then, everything Tim O'Brien puts his hand to is great. Thanks for posting!
Tim O'brien has made me tingling happy from the first time I heard his beautiful music. Music should feel like this!! :)
Stuart's playing is amazing !
He's about as good as they come.
+stevesprinceofsteaks If God had a bluegrass band, Stuart would be the fiddler.
There are none better than him
Goosebumps galore
Excellent bluegrass roots version ,love it!
this song was meant to be played by anyone who takes the time to play it. Simply gorgeous.
I don't know, fellow citizens. I can't stop listening to this magic performance. One of the most intense musical experiences I have ever had.
Excellent musicianship all around; very pleasant listening!

This is the best arrangement of a song period
Fok! Gets me every time. Way to do it fellers.

What a beautiful version! The lyric delivery, the musicians. Almost brought me to tears.
Man these fellas can sure play . Spot on singing . Thanks

I feel that way about both this song and "In Tall Buildings" - both incredibly evocative songs
You know I would love to see Tim live, but really this is the best seat in the house and I can repeat as often as I like. Definitely my favorite artist, I never get bored he's so eclectic and versatile.
Tim was asked to sing this at John Hartford's funeral.
I can see why.
Old songs will think fondly.
I am Australian and proud of it, all parts, I am proud of everything Australian, especially our music. BUT DAMN, I WISH I WAS Tim O'Brien! Special, oh so special music!
Making West Virginia proud, Tim...........
liked this tune since i were a kid. great rendition.
That shirt is giving him so much fiddling power... its just incredible!
The best live guitar solo I’ve heard of this beautiful song.
bryan sutton is the greatest living person to touch six strings
Giants behind her instruments and a real giant song - thanks to John Hartford to get place in my heart forever with this unique melody! What kind of beautiful fiddle breaks....., ooooutsch!
Tim is my hero ..... That is all .
..........50 years of my life just coursed through my mind while I listened to this. My it passes so quickly. Excellent.
Hands down the very best version of this song
Great song! And these musicians are wonderful!
are you kidding me?..To say anything negative about his guitar playing is nuts...his playing is awesome..my god listen to him
Wow...the Masters perform. I wish I could watch the entire set.
Terrific musicianship made to look so easy
Second fiddle solo was badass
All these guys are so awesome and I believe, inspired by their love for the great departed John Hartford!
Glad someone caught this on video. It's the best version I've heard of this tune.
Molly Tuttle is as good!
@@josephthompson5398 she's world class, but brian sutton is other-worldly
Some mention of the composer, John Hartford, is in order I think?
That is a darn good rendition of a greatly written song.

Glad you like it so much Serge, when I put it up there, didn´t realize it´ll be so popular;-)
This is of course coming from a fan of bluegrass and folk music :-) . Love Brian Sutton to. Big fan of his too.
+Serge Comeau Great version, BUT why hate on the Camball version, it was a monster hit in its time
John hartford wrote and recorded this tune....sold it to Glen Campbell ,but retained the rights .....tim does the song proper!

Thanks O'brien for keeping this tune alive

I love Tim's look at Stuart during his tasty break about 3:05. He half smiles and says something to himself. I can guess....
Thanks to John Hartford for this tune 🙏🎶❤️😎👍RIP
I always thought Glen Campbell penned it ! Dang I’ll have to google that!
You’re right! Thanks!!!
Check the JH recordings here on yt, the one solo with banjo and shoe shuffle, and a later recording playing fiddle with a whole room of bluegrass greats
What a break at 3:00!! I thought this song was worn out in the early 70's, but this revival of it is better than the original ever was.
Lordy!! I didn't think I would like a version more than good ole Johny Hartford, but I am loving this one!!!!! Most excellent!!
These guys make every note so easy...
Makes me tear up every time. I love Tim’s alterations to Glen Campbell’s lyrics. I hope to find someone to play this song with someday. Thanks!
It's John Hartford who wrote the song. Glen and John joked about the number of people that thought it was Glen that wrote it. Never a point of contention since there was great respect between the two.

now that's some of the finest in that group.
Fantastic musical talent right here, what a fabulous rendition of a song that many have covered but few have mastered.
I hit the like button as soon as I heard the first note!
Masters before us.
So beautiful
So sweet...:-) Must to go out the door, can just hear it ONE more time..;-) Thank you Mr Boris, this can only end up being a good day.
Avery fine performance of a very fine piece of music.
Until I read a few posted comments, I had not "seen" Stuart's shirt., immaterial.
"Vraiment très fort" !!! - Quel trio !!!
The tears flowed.
Again!!
What a team!!
Love the intro
Lovely version. Great gypsy style fiddle solo.
