Venezuela is a warning to all. You get a populist egomaniac destroyer like Chavez and even a relatively stable rich country can descend into poverty and dictatorship. I suppose we feel that most OECD countries have institutions stronger than what Venezuela had at the turn of the millennium but I fear that a disaster like this could happen anywhere. What is there to be aware about? national extremists take over, make a dog's breakfast of things, double down against criticism and suppress all attempts at reform or regime change, gump happens. As a Malaysian I've seen this story repeat itself all across the world. Only this time, many of us are fearful that the West is NOT immune to this sort of nationalist claptrap and nonsense punishing the weak and the powerless. And Venezuela's not alone. We have Cuba and Nicaragua, and to some extent Ecuador as well .... or as a Portuguese speaker I prefer to say Equa-dor.
Yes, I think the suffering of Venezuelans is well known. Why in your view does the global left and to a far greater extent the US left back Maduro so much in this election fiasco? Which countries have publicly said that Venezuela's elections were won by Maduro?
