  • Find out how to install carplay and android auto filled PCM4 - forget additional boards, aftermarket head units.... yes this is the OEM one from the 718!
    📨 testdrivescotland@gmail.com for a personalised estimate for retrofit looms, remote support and troubleshooting.
    Previous video understanding if it could be done is here, part 1: • Can you retrofit PCM4 ...
    #carplay #gt4 #porsche991
    In 2016 Porsche upgraded the infotainment systems in their vehicles with a new PCM unit, aka PCM 4. From 2012 and Up to MY 2016 PCM 3.1 was fitted in Porsche vehicles, although well received at the outset, it is beginning to show its age.
    PCM 4 provides an improved user experience with a higher resolution screen and capacitive touchscreen just like the one on your Apple or Android smartphone, and these changes provided an excellent basis for smartphone integration via Apple Carplay.
    Up until now it wasn't entirely clear whether the PCM 4 units could be retrofitted, this video explores whether owners can say goodbye the pcm 3, forget all about Carplay add on circuit boards and retrofit the PCM4 for a fully OEM experience.
    Watch this video to find out if it is possible, what has to be done and what is required to add pcm 4 into your Porsche!
    Now it is the turn of the 981, I take you through the process and explain how I can support you in doing the same thing!
    Please note that if you have BOSE or Burmeister fitted, PCM 4 is not compatible out of the box and you will most likely need to commit to swapping your amplifier if you want to perform this retrofit.

    Thank you Daryl for your support during the installation of the PCM 4 in my 2016 GT4. Better screen resolution, better touch screen, Apple Car Play, Waze, Google Maps and better sound compared to the PCM 3.1. I'm also very happy that the OEM reversing camera functions as it should. It really has modernised the car interior. Cheers 👍

    Thanks for helping me with this install 👍🏼 I’d recommend this to anyone who has the older PCM. The PCM4 is just better in every way. I went from the most basic CDR3.1 to a fully loaded PCM4 with google maps/navigation & Apple CarPlay. Recently tested on a 2000 mile road trip around Europe and I have no complaints. Great work 👍🏼

    This is interesting and pleased to see the video after supporting the first one all that time ago! Great job and I applaud your drive to help the community. I guess the question for me is what it gains you over and above the JoyeAuto or similar system with PCM 3.1. DAB is certainly a very nice to have, and the screen is higher resolution, but ultimately I think that's it? I'm pretty happy with JoyeAuto + PCM 3.1. The quality through the Aux is bad, but I just use wireless carplay and then play music through the iPod USB connection. I'm guessing the total cost of PCM 4 will be 3-4 times the price of the £400 JoyeAuto kit (the PCM 4 alone is circa £1,200 on ebay). Have I missed something?

    • @TDS981
      @TDS981  10 месяцев назад +3

      Thanks for your comment and positive feedback.
      I've used both extensively so I'll start by saying the add on boards aren't bad solutions, the issue they all have is that they are held back by the pcm itself. The visuals are quite poor, the touch screen functionality doesn't support how the apps work now, and reliability often isn't up to OEM standard. ( I recall having to reboot very occasionally).
      However, the worst thing for me is that they all feel like add ons, it just doesn't feel like it belongs. Whether it be the sound quality, the way to switch between inputs, transfer of data to the cluster, it just never feels very smooth. Your workaround for example to get decent sound isn't ideal and the add on mic solutions aren't ideal either.
      Pcm4 on the other hand, the interface feels more like your modern smart phone, it has a bigger higher res screen so you can clearly see the data when you have split screen and it sounds the same on all inputs. It's fully integrated, fully reliable and feels like an OEM solution, using the existing microphone and without the need for a box or connection to the fuse board.
      I would say your perception of the price to do this is quite high, this is why I offer support, and remember PCM4 can add value to your car or be taken out when you are done and sold on as a kit. At some point the Pcm3 will stop working, the HDD has a shelf life and then it will need to be cloaned and converted to SD, that also costs money.

      @@TDS981I could probably with the lower resolution screen but not the inferior sound. Would an upgrade of the stock amplifier not sort this issue? Despite the Bose upgrade, which many say still isn’t great improvement over the base system, an amplifier from a third party should give a genuinely upgrade, shouldn’t it?

    • @TDS981
      @TDS981  10 месяцев назад

      The issue is the input on that particular board it's using the aux channel for sound. There are other options which use fibre optic now but once you've used one you'll know what I mean.

    I so need this PCM conversion. I’m going back from a 718 4.0 to a 981 this week and one of my biggest reservations is having a PCM 3.1 😢. I’m booked for an Apple CarPlay upgrade a week later but think it’s going to be a compromise. When are Porsche going to make an upgraded unit for the 981/991 as they’ve done for the 987/997 range? Hi Dan, So much want pcm4.0 in my 981, but I have Bose and reckon I’d sorely miss having the map & nav directions in the cluster. Ironic isn’t it, since pcm 4.0 main screen would bring CarPlay and Waze onto the main pcm screen better anyway!! Hmmm….
    I noticed you’ve updated your steering wheel too. I want to do the same but would go full multifunction (have the sport design currently so no m/f), would go heated (don’t have currently either), and would buy a s/w that has the mode dial - the latest module by Li Paul - gpsadapters will automatically give me m/f functionality now without any new coding apparently if I’ve read his info correctly, but I believe I will still need a new clock spring and coding to activate heating - do you know if this is correct? Appreciate your wheel upgrade was not the m/f version. I do not have a PIWIS or know anyone near me in Newcastle that has one (and is knowledgeable with using it).
    Just doing some chin rubbing/head scratching before seeking out a steering wheel. New airbag, clockspring, gpsadapter etc etc….

      Hi, directions still work in the cluster just not the map display but you would have no reason to use it anyway when you have waze on split screen on the pcm.
      I'm not a big believer in the mode dial on the MF wheel it doesn't offer anything particularly useful and it's also rather expensive.
      Yes you won't have the activation code for heating in your existing steering control module so you would need to make additional upgrades.

      @@TDS981 thanks for the info Daz - sorry for the typo on your name - didn’t check before I hit send. Is the steering control module a separate unit or is this what’s referred to as the clockspring? Good to know about the directions showing in the cluster - that nudges me further in the direction (no pun intended!) still the Nose thing to consider too.

      You'll need a clock spring I think, the wheel should come with the smaller module inside.

      If you do the pcm 4.0 and code the cluster the gpsadapter will not work. I did the conversion and had to add a new clockspring. I lost the ability to use the sport chrono knob on the steering wheel. It still lights up to match sport and sport plus but does not function to switch.

      @@TDS981 Excellent, I have been trying to source a head unit, think you mentioned something about replacing the Bose module what would be the cost of the wiring harness.

      On a different tack, does your 981 rattle much with the hood up? (Dash, interior trim, that sort of thing rather than mechanical, engine etc)

      Not really it's quite well put together, I recall in the past I had some plastic rubbing/creaking from the hoops when it was cold but I applied some felt tape it's been fine. Anything in particular on yours?

      @@TDS981 mainly it's those little flaps that stand upright next to the headrests when the roof is up (they lie flat when the roof is down)
      Plus a few assorted rattles that seem to come from the front of the passenger compartment/dashboard
      Although previous rattle-chasing in other cars has taught me that often the source of rattle is in the opposite direction in which the sound is coming from

      @@pugrallye23 My 981 Boxster GTS has these exact same rattles from the wings and passenger compartment. It's an 8 year old car, so I kind of get it, but would have expected more from a car that had an MSRP of >$100K new.
