Apparently the beret finds its origins with 17th century Basque.
I have a newsboy cap with a very wide crown and it can be worn like a beret, leaning the crown to the preferred side.

Hello My Canadian friend! Yes, it's origins are associated with Anglo-Basque culture, and also french military in late 1800s or so. I'm assuming from your comment that you don't own one yet ? Well, my friend, what are you waiting for? They have the Spring and Summer versions of bérets as well actually that are made out of cotton, linen, and polyester blends with tiny vented holes for breathability from heat. Let me know when you get you some BÉRETS, my friend.
Also, be sure to look up, check out, and join the hat group on Facebook "The Hatters Lounge By G The Hat Guy," and post your hat wearing and collection pictures on there. SALUTE, my friend!

@@gthehatguy I don't really care for the beret. I wore on often way back in my Che Guevara era.
Facebook and I came to a dating of the ways some time ago. I hurt Facebook's little feelings.
I am waiting for April when every one's summer/spring hats come out. My almost twenty year old straw hat, fedora style, finally cracked and must be replaced. I am having so much difficulty deciding between hat or cap I decided to get once go each to solve the dilemma I have never owned a linen hat or cap so one will be linen. Probably the cap. Sorry, I blither. 🎩

I see. Yeah, linen piece would be awesome for you my friend. You gotta get one, buddy. And yeah, Facebook can be something else sometimes. I just find them to be useful somewhat for building social groups and sharing interests amongst like-minds, otherwise, it can be a handful sometime. Enjoy your weekend, my friend. SALUTE ✌🏽👍🏽👉🏽💯

@@gthehatguy I've never had a linen hat and I want one as well as a linen flat cap. I have linen clothing but no such hats or caps.

A basque style beret is a Spanish beret, they're all round and a little larger in size. It is also the original style. Laulhere is the name of the last company in France that still makes French style berets. The original style beret has a leather sweat band, Sterkowski makes them, that company is in Poland.

Hey, what's happening! It's a popular style of Berét around Europe for sure, but the French are known for it. Don't know about the Spanish connection, etc, from my knowledge and research, but definitely popular in various parts of Europe as well. SALUTE 👉🏾👍🏾✌🏾💯

Sterkowski Berets are sewn berets, the French and Spanish berets are knitted and of superior quality.

I agree! Sterkowski makes their own version of several types of caps, etc, and I've seen their items on the marketplaces. They seem to have a sizing and fitting problem with some of their headwear from my experiences with them years back. But, as you've said about the sewn Sterkowski version versus the knitted ones with higher quality, I agree with you. SALUTE ✌🏾👉🏾👍🏾💯

@@gthehatguy true, plus like I said the Polish berets are of a two part construction. The Kangol berets are made in China, though at one time Kangol were made here in the UK, I own two of those. My own personal preference are the French and Spanish originals of which I own seven of various plate dimensions.
