    Landing low-kicks against a trained fighter is not an easy task! This is a special follow up to "The Fight That Changed History." Duke Roufus tweeted, "Learn to turn weakness into a strength. At age 18 I saw my brother Rick get beat by low kicks by Changpuek. Fast forward broke 2 legs w/them." In Duke's retirement bout, he masterfully defeated his opponent with low-kicks.

    Much respect for Duke Roufus. He dissed Muay Thai in the beginning, But instead of hating it forever, he kept an open mind, went to Thailand and learned from it.
    That is what true martial arts is all about.

      Yeah a lot of people need to take what he said with Context. His undefeated brother was demolished with the low kick by an Unknown. Of course he is going to say some ignorant things about it. He was mad. But as you said he put that aside and opened up his arsenal and learned Muay Thai.

      Marshall Banana Actually, Duke said that when his brother got slaughtered with leg kicks. Then he becomes this.

    • @Phospion
      @Phospion 10 лет назад +18

      It is dumb, and I'm pretty sure Duke realizes it was a dumb thing to say by now. But, he's not completely wrong, I mean, it is harder to throw a picture perfect rolling thunder kick or something like that compared to a low kick. I think that Rick wasn't prepared to deal with low kicks (obvious statement), but his style of kickboxing wasn't the right to win that fight, even with all the restrictions to the Thai fighter. I really think that Rick COULD have won that fight (according to how it was going and the fact that he broke Changpuek jaw with the kick to leaping punch combination) if he wasn't so hard-headed and actually learned how to deal with those kicks, he knew they were coming, hence the restrictions to Kiatsongrit. His fault. American style kickboxing fault.

    • @Phospion
      @Phospion 10 лет назад +6

      Tell me about it, I have been training to throw leg kicks after punches Mr. Perfect Hoost style and it has added a lot to my stand-up arsenal. Its crazy how easy you can chop someone's legs with 4 or 5 well-timed, well-placed leg kicks. But in contrast to high level kickboxing, where you will get knocked the fuck out if you throw a leg kick without setting it up, in MMA you can actually get away with some "unset" kicks, even in the highest level (If you have good TDD). On other note, its pretty cool and helpful to have a good, let say, spinning side kick or spinning hook kick on top of your other go-to, chopping, KTFO right away if you conect kicks. Its good to have a varied arsenal of weapons on the stand-up but you have to make sure that you don't throw anything untrained of half-assed or you'll be sent to lala-land.

    • @Phospion
      @Phospion 10 лет назад

      You're a southpaw? Because I'm orthodox and I can't get the groove of that kick, I don't know if I should go Dan Henderson with it going no switch, just to set up a big punch or if I should go for a switch inside kick and fucking murder his leg with it.

    I've trained Muay Thai for probably 6 years in that time I've easily sparred over 200 some rounds. I've taught for a combined 2 or so years. But I watch this and realize, I don't know anything. Their are geniuses in many categories. Some with physics or hitsory, some with acting or writing. Duke Roufus is a genius. In this world, he is one of the smartest human beings alive. Which makes it even stranger that when I met him through a friend, despite him and his brother being essentially to Muay Thai and now MMA all he did was say, "Hi, I'm Duke, how are you doing today?"

    Even Duke's leg checks were badass. You rarely see folks recoil off a check like Eduardo did off his low kick attempt around 3:04. Duke's timing, positioning, and weight transfer into his left shin during that check were perfect, and that must have hurt Eduardo like a motherfucker. I'm fairly certain it that was me, I'd be doing the octopus dance on my right tibia there.

    Concerning striking martial arts it definitely is not merely how fast and hard you can throw a punch/kick, but also precisely when and where to throw it. No matter how hard or fast you can throw a strike timing will make or break you, and this guy is one of the many fighting talents who capitalizes on that knowledge.. Definitely deserving of his rep as a striking legend.
    Great Video!

    whats really depressing is spending 2 Years on your jumping spinning hook kick only to rarely land it. A guy with one week of low kick THAI training would more than not defeat the experienced karate practitioner.Some of those arts have the most beautiful kicks and it takes alot of hard work to master them but when it comes down to it you have to look favors effectiveness in a combat situation. Saenchai incorporates alot of fancy kicks but he is not the norm.

    • @ronki23
      @ronki23 9 лет назад +2

      1 week is a bit of a joke; more like a month. Karate/ ITF Taekwondo has good hand techniques. I do kickboxing (previously Western, but now I do K1) and sparred against an black belt karateka; they are quite defensive but once they get momentum they are tough. I tried to clinch him to stop him but he threw me to the ground. With Taekwondo they have good kicks and are fast.

      +Chris Capozzi
      Also, notice that the majority of Saenchai's "fancy kicks" misses. He doesn't generally use them seriously, but only perform them when he's playing around. Because, in reality, fancy kicks are not effective unless you're that much blindingly faster than your opponent, which requires a delusional mentality to think like that (e.g. TKD practitioners thinking they're "blindingly fast" relative to Thai fighters etc.).

    • @theorist-ue4ms
      @theorist-ue4ms 7 лет назад

      You're incorrect, ITF TKD is light years behind Muay Thai in all aspects, including boxing techniques. I'm always surprised at how they throw their punches and kicks, their stance and their lack of setups.

    I wonder if you could do a video on leading with leg kicks? Because I like to use mid-low kicks to keep distance but they leave me prone to getting rushed with punches. The only time I use kicks realistically is when I do head kicks after throwing a punch combination so would like to know how to use kicks for distancing, particularly low ones as i'm still on balance (if I use medium kicks i'm off balance!!)

    • @benjackson1506

      I think it is kenshin that had a video on using the teep. If you use the teep and low kicks together they make it very difficult for your opponent to either check the low kick it catch the teep because they both start our in a similar motion with raising your knee. You can also throw a low kick and change it into a teep, like the question mark kick but with a teep instead of a head kick.
