You continue to demonstrate how nuanced and intricate Muay Thai is, rather than the violent and uncouth stereotype we so often see in games/movies, keep up the great work Laurence!
Dude that's awesome you covered this. I was just watching the 2009 fight a few months ago after Brendan Dorman brought up how much he loved nieky. I remember nieky's overall kickboxing and hands were more deadly than I remembered watching a few years ago when he fought bua. I realize now with a trained-eye how little punching bua used to do against really established Dutch fighters, even for a few that didn't make the final 4-8. Bua also seemed to show off that elusive defense off with his left shoulder, head tuck, and right arm cross face guarding. I remember Souwer (or maybe it was JWP) Saying how underrated and difficult bus's defense actually was. It was just crazy watching back and realizing how safe bua played this. My memory told me bua used to dominate, up to the final Max fights with the heaviest names where competition was much closer.
As usual a great breakdown. This breakdown touched (for me at least) on a few important concepts which I will make sure to use while sparring ;) Nieky is a great fighter (I'm a fan of his) but this video shows how much overreliance on your strenghts can quickly become your weakness. Thanks again AND I am eagerly looking forward to your book.
Every video I watch from you is like a week worth of sparring experience. Thanks for what you do. When I finally do fight, I would love to wear ur logo.
Some of the best videos on RUclips, you have, man. I really learn a lot from them. you sir, and others like you are a blessing to anyone willing to learn. I personally thank you--and Im sure that Im on behalf of many others as well. :)
That was an interesting video. Definitely not the most exciting way to fight but definitely keeps them out of range to stop them unloading combinations and conserves energy.
Where were the combinations?? I mostly saw single jabs or teeps or jeep teep. I thought a combination is like that at 1:13 (a 1 - 2 - 7 combi), or not?
Hey man, a thought: I you would voice over the videos instead of doing it with only text. I'd bet you would have a multiple of the viewers you have now. It's certainly worth a try!
Hi Lawrence! I love your breakdowns on muay thai, very detailed and full of relevant information! I was wondering if you could do a breakdown of Buakaw vs Enriko Kehl during the 2014 K-1 World Max Championships? I have watched it many times, but I would love to have your input on the amazing fight.
Having to fight again the same night and thus conserve energy is very evident here. Those familiar with Buakaw's work will note that he's fighting at no more than 60% of his capability here. Immensely professional achievement and easily overlooked.
I train muay thai and my gym there are a lot of K1 fighters so watching this is mind blowing to me. Dutch combinations are hard to deal with. It's no surprise why Thais emphasis teeps/knees so much
Great work, please keep it up. I have learned so much from you, its amazing. this is high level analysis! I truly appreciate all your effort. please consider doing an e book. thanks again!!!
I'm not sure that Thai warrior culture is 25 centuries old… "Prior to the arrival of the Thai people and culture into what is now Thailand, the region hosted a number of indigenous Austroasiatic-speaking and Malayo-Sumbawan-speaking civilisations. However, little is known about Thailand before the 13th century, as the literary and concrete sources are scarce and most of the knowledge about this period is gleaned from archaeological evidence."
The Spartan “super-warrior” culture consists almost entirely of propaganda and hyped mythology, with very little historical fact behind it. The athenians, amongst many other city-states, were just as skilled as the spartans/lacedaemonians on the field of battle. The movie ‘300’ is also largely fictional, as there were several thousand greek soldiers attending that battle from several city-states, thus completely dwarfing the lacedaemonian effort. Overall, lacedaemonian society was a failure, if compared to their contemporaries. (Especially if compared to Athens) edit: It should be noted, however, that the Spartans did have above-average military tacticians and military structure.
@@evilseedsgrownaturally1588 You are wrong. Athens was of course the most successful city state, financially, culturally and politically. Athenian military (and especially Athenian navy) was great. But I can give you a lot of historical sources which prove that for at least 3 centuries the Spartans had indeed the most successful military body in ancient Greece and they were rightfully feared by the rest of the Greeks. Forget the movie 300.They were much better than that, without the Hollywood crap. As a Greek, I dislike a lot of things about the notion that Spartans were a super cool society, because they were mostly cold killers, but I must admit they were extremely effective ones.
I'm not a trained fighter tho had my share of fights and have been a fan of boxing and kickboxing all my life. So just wondering wth did Holzken not change his strategy after one minute of jabs and teeps landing at will? Not alone 2 fights of getting punished. Seems side movement would help some if done with speed and agility tho the leg kicks would then become easier for Buakaw. But man you have to adjust somehow when you repeatedly are getting hit with the same sequences of jab, teep, jab, teep. Also he didn't really try to catch the fairly predictable teep kicks. I would think that you could also try timing a quick inside-sidestep in anticipation of a teep and counter it with something like a spinning backfist. As I said I'm not trained and I am getting old so not as sharp as I used to be, so just throwing out a few ideas. Let me know how wrong I am. But I do know that you have to try something different when getting beaten like a rented mule. hehe I've become a big fan of the talents of Buakaw. When he is in top form he is almost unbeatable and a few of his loses were robbery by the judges.
daleschaan I was wondering the same thing but after watching these fights, fighting to his side and not square would open him to getting kicked in the back leg repeatively, but,,,it would minimize his chance of getting kicked in the gut. I observed the Dutch fighter try to return the favor but he was too slow with his kicks or didn't snap his leg back in fast enough, and was grabbed and thrown down (repeatively). I agree he and his corner fell hook line and sinker for the second time in a row, not cool (should've trained for that by second fight yeesh!).
Burning question for Lawrence or a knowledgeable viewer: what is "checking" the teep/front kick? Since parry is a block then is it a dodge/lean-away defense? I know that hand-checking is pulling down a guard to open for attack. Thanks for your time and these brilliant analyses. They've motivated me to train again after many years (not easy when you're 40+ and get tendonitis just standing!)
Crazy how Nieky just stands there and eats teep after teep without adjusting strategy or even moving laterally might've helped. If im missing something please do respond.
A lot of people don’t know how to train for them “teeps “ Some people call kicks. Not even knowing the technique, It’s a great way to keep distance from a aggressive fighter Stay in the kicking range and set up combinations I like to use it all the time. For sparring and in street fights. Works every time.
Buakaw would probably still win. He has only had one true loss since he fought Nieky, got screwed over badly against Souwer and Kehl, neither of those fights belonged in extra time.
I had never seen Holzken's Hip Hinging to lessen the blow from a front kick. Do you consider it a decent defense? Would it spell disaster in an MMA context?
Lawrence your videos are pure quality! Awesome job. I'd love if you could answer my question. I was doing Kickboxing for almost a year, then i stopped due to my training messing with my studies. Now since im in Uni im starting to assist Muay Thai, the thing is, some of my friends say its not as good and "versatile" as Kickboxing is and due to that is worst. Can you tell the major differences? Is it going to be hard for me? Did i make the right decision? Which is better? .-A loving fan. Hugo the Noob
+Hugo Daniel Cabrera García Better depends on context and goals. It also depends on who is teaching you. What do you want to achieve from training either kickboxing or muay thai?
Wow! Thanks for the reply! Well, he looks like a regular trainer. I'd like to achieve more explosive power and durability in a fight, in other terms more power than speed in my blows, and also sustainability in a battle, i believe the Muay Thai stance gives more security. (Sorry if i murdered english)
You will achieve that in both sports. Muay thai is more complete as it allows more grappling and more weapons though. Kickboxing generally has more punching.
Lawrence it would be great if you could kindly explain to some viewers for this vdo clip that what TEEP is? Some of the viewers had gave their comments which was rather negative that it was the BALL KICK Baukaw use to impost on Nicky his opponent but all Thai know that it is one of the tactics weapon that Muaythai boxers use to push away and to prevent any strike and to minimize the strenght from his opponent which launching straight to the stomach not to the ball and I believs that Nicky can feel it. thank you
how would this strategy be employed in southpaw vs orthodox matches? Getting slightly lead foot dominance and then using the rear leg teep? Or letting the opponent get lead foot dominance and then teeping with the front leg? Or is this tactic not useful in southpaw vs orthodox matches anyway?
Nieky could easily throw left jabs most of the time before the teeps, could slip over the head right hooks quite often. Inner thigh kick to the lead legs, and kicks to the rear legs were also possible.
The amount of pushkicks Nieky is able to absorb is incredible! But, why didn't he come up with a counter strategy? After all, that was the second time Buakaw used the same tactic
Just seen a video where Buakaw gets knocked out by the Japanese fighter Sato. I'm no expert but it looked suspicious to me. Lawrence will you do a breakdown? Opinions?
That stiff arm was checked by Masato by countering it with a jab/uppercut /overhand. I guess that left stiff arm can be countered like in boxing by bobbing to the right and punch a job followed by an upper cut or over hand under or above respectively on that stiff arm. That was what Masato did and won the fight against Buakaw.
Lacks the flexibility to adapt. If the same jab and teep is used over and over, he should find the rhythm and break it. I know, it's easy for anyone to say, I'm no fighter, just a fight fan.🙂
Lol, you can tell Buakaw just gives Nieky brief, cursory post fight respect because he sees Ramon Dekkers in the ring behind Nieky and is way more excited to see him
Both hurts and feels good to see Dekkers there. Fuck man. Great breakdown Lawrence. If Nieky and Buakaw would fight now, who do you think would win? Let's say under glory rules.
+FromPoetryToRap Buakaw is fighting with pretty bad injuries nowadays, and Nieky has improved so much, so Nieky definitely favorable. That's excluding the pretty significant size gap that Nieky put on.
+BroDoX Foxx you realize that was 7 years ago, during the prime of buakaw's career, and toward the beginning of Nieky's. If you really think nothing has changed in 7 years you're a fool.
+BroDoX Foxx ouch, that really hurt my feelings. The fact that all you can do is resort to name calling means you have no other support for your argument. Murthel Groenhart, Marco Pique, and Cosmo Alexandre aren't "noobs", and Holzken has beaten them all since his last fight with Buakaw. If you want to have a discussion based on facts, great. If you want to be all pissed off for no reason and spout hate speech, then I've already won.
Can anyone explain me The difference between their Standes? They Seem to be very similar to me :/ i Know what Lawrence means But in the Video stance doesnt Seem so different to me
Jonny Wille dutch stance is more loaded, thai stance is more upright, basically as tall as you can, Dutch KB throws alot of combinations so they load up more, Thais do clinch so they have to be always upright
As an complete amateur watching this video, I observe that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of movement? They always seem stay squared up to each other, throwing punches and kicks but never circling around or even trying to dodge a hit?
+Nicholas Lo I think that's how most muay thai fights are. 2 guys just taking hits and at the same trying to figure each other out, or maybe just go for raw power. Guys like Saenchai and Samart were pretty evasive in their style though
Nicholas Lo watch the original fighting stance of fighters not fighting square like boxers and karatekas who fought muay thai, they got destroyed by having their back legs exposed to lower leg kicks and we're easily thrown down.
Its ironic, I just watched the 2007, and 2009 fight back to back and especially in the 2007 match i was thinking, *this is a great Muay Thai break down example for Lawrence Kenshin lol...next in my suggest videos list? This video LOL... Nothing much changed at all since 2007, that was a title fight too. Buakaw just had more combinations and over all demolished the Dutchman. Nieky still had zero answer for one of the staple Muay Thai (Teep) moves. I was shocked he just kept that high guard waiting for Buakaw's cross that he never even needed to extend...
Buakaw is much tighter in muscle and rigidity later years, true strength of Muay thai...being a wall so to speak. There are principles I believe make the master martial artist; kicking, punching, grappling, acrobatics, defense. All the 5 can have many sub topics, like say here in the video, defense can have a sub topic of muscle conditioning and strength, as well many other sub topics within defense. The 5 foundations, and utilizing them all with great skill, tough stuff.
unfortunately K-1 rules don't allow for elbows. Its a totally different competition from normal muay thai rules that favours distance oriented fighting styles. And since Nieky's range and strategy was outmatched by Buakaw's teeps, he would have found it difficult to get in range of an uppercut
That guy miss the master class of grabbing the opponent's leg. Because it's reasonable to get countered by a teep or push kick but, man...he's eating every kick!
You continue to demonstrate how nuanced and intricate Muay Thai is, rather than the violent and uncouth stereotype we so often see in games/movies, keep up the great work Laurence!

This video LOL... Nothing much changed at all since 2007, that was a title fight too. Buakaw just had more combinations and over all demolished the Dutchman. Nieky still had zero answer for one of the staple Muay Thai (Teep) moves. I was shocked he just kept that high guard waiting for Buakaw's cross that he never even needed to extend...
how strong that punch, can't make buakaw down or KO... buakaw head like steel...
Buakaw Was Young!!
THANK YOU!...AGAIN :D
i love the critics in the video that cannot be seen from other's.
Buakaw...the best of the best!!!!!!
Cédric Dóumbe is the Best
why doesn't Nieky use an uppercut? Also we don't see many elbows here. However, Nieky's resume is impressive, Buakaw is legendary too
unfortunately K-1 rules don't allow for elbows. Its a totally different competition from normal muay thai rules that favours distance oriented fighting styles. And since Nieky's range and strategy was outmatched by Buakaw's teeps, he would have found it difficult to get in range of an uppercut
I remember the commentator say he was broke back mountain over buakaw lol that was classic i love buakaw
Damn, how come I never knew this fight happened
+Charles Baker they fought twice!
holzken was still young though, I wonder what would happen if they fought each other now
Did he kick him in the nuts area 1:32
BUAKAW IS THE LEGEND !!!
Buakaw has the best kicks, switch kicks, low kicks, and teeps in the world
Perfect against blitz punchers like masato or zambidis
That guy miss the master class of grabbing the opponent's leg. Because it's reasonable to get countered by a teep or push kick but, man...he's eating every kick!
It's because of his high guard. The weakness of the high guard is body shots in exchange for the ability to absorb and counter punches very well
True. Then change your guard in 2nd assault. These guys are enough pros to see what is not working.
Alejandro Carbonell Esteban True he was younger though and his habit was probably overloading his brain. Easy for us to see just watching the video.
