Thanks for the video. I got my Generals and Zero Hour going on Win 7 Pro 64-Bit.
A couple things to add that may help others who are struggling...
    1) When you create the NEW TEXT FILE, don't immediately save it as "options.ini". Leave it with the generic name. Then, when you have pasted in the content, go to "File>Save As..." change it to "File Type>All Files and name it "options.ini". Win 7 Pro wouldn't change it from standard text file to .ini file even when you told it to overwrite.
    2) I caught myself typing "option.ini" without the "s" and obviously didn't work. Be careful when you type it in.
This should be a fairly simple process but it was really easy to make stupid little mistakes along the way.
    Great Video! Thanks again!

Hi guys, after many attempts, I have finally fixed this error. I have tried before all those fixes (such as options.ini, making it run as admin, and compatibility for XP etc...) The truth is these are crucial (thank you Zevex Zybex) but if you still have this problem then you need to do two additional steps:
1- Install the software "CFF explorer", its a safe program so dont worry. This will allow your computer to increase the RAM space for the game. If you need a step by step on how to do this using CFF explorer then I would be happy to tell you.
2- I m not sure if this is an important step but it certainly worked for me: I have installed the "shockwave" addon for the game and using CFF explorer also increased the RAM for it. Make sure to download the version that is compatible for Windows 7/8. Like I said, this could be not important for you and the CFF step may be sufficient to fix it for good.
I have struggled for ages to fix this game, now it works well with the amazing shockwave addon :) Goodluck!

Super great insight!!! Thank you so much, Zevex!!!! I had to include instructions from other suggestions to get my final working solution.
5 things, in this order, need to happen as of December 2015 when installing CnC generals from the original two disc set onto Win7 64:
****This assumes all CNC files have been removed and uninstalled completely****
    1. Uninstall windows update KB3086255. This prevents old game CDs from booting
    2. install from the CnC Generals original two disc set.
    3. Adjust the compatibility settings to run under WinXPSP2
    4. Start the program to find the error pop up. This creates the necessary folder for .ini file to be placed in next.
    5. Create and place the options.ini file to the location as provided and instructed in this video tutorial.
You might consider installing the 1.08 patch after you have successfully worked this solution to a bootable level.

For Windows 7 users, Microsoft released an update called KB3086255. It disabled the ability to play a lot of older PC games, not just C&C Generals/Zero Hour. You can uninstall the update, but at your own security risk. Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program > View installed updates > and search for the above mentioned update. Again, do it at your own risk.

OK EVERYONE ! LISTEN UP! for windows 10 fix is very similar, if you get the technical error message, just put the Option.ini file where he described:
    \Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data
    and
\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data
both of them need to have it,
also right click on the shortcut and select properties, then from top tab go to compatebility tab and check windows xp sp2 and run as admin
    Enjoy!

Windows 10: C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer(tm) Generals Compatibility mode was set to Win 7, 640 rez, Run as admin. Sent this icon to desktop. Made sure the icon on the desktop had the same compatibility settings (Win7, 640x480, Run as admin). Also follow the directions for the ini file. I just copied/pasted when he has listed.

Please read this note for windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users after Sept 8, 2015.
If you have a legit copy of the original CD-based game (or zero hour) and it doesn't do anything at start (no error msg, no process in taskmgr), you may need to google kb3086255, which is a Windows Update that silently disables the secdrv digital rights management service. An alternative to following the steps described in the first Google result is to use a No CD crack, but it may violate the DMCA. Either of these fixes may expose your computer to additional risk of viral infection. (Source: MS15-097, Microsoft Support)
Also, if you aren't getting a menu animation, run generals.exe in compatibility mode for XP SP3. (Source: JouMxyzptlk)
Both (not NoCD though) tested working on W7 Home Premium x64.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

A common issue is that people put the options.ini file is the wrong spot or that people spell it option.ini which wouldn't work in either case. Make sure you have a legal copy of the game and that you are starting from a clean install. try repeating the the steps and also make sure you are using the disk. i would also try running the game offline. sometimes older games have issues with internet self checks after the company stops supporting them.

I have had this problem when installing Generals/ZeroHour on other computers in my house recently. Try all the steps again in my video except this time have you screen resolution set to a smaller non-wide screen setting (Like 800x600) or something like that. Hope this helps :D

I Need Help! When i install the game onto my computer, the game does not install any game folders (Maps, Maps Preview, General Data...ect[seen on min 3:15]) into the Documents folder where you would would normally place that new "options" folder. After I install the game, all i see in the "C:\Users\\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data" is a file titled "ReleaseCrashInfo", THAT IS ALL. NO OTHER FOLDERS. I too have Windows 7 64 bit.

The "ReleaseCrashInfo" is the crash info you keep having. The problem is that for windows 7, Command and Conquer Generals and Zero hour do not create the "options.ini" File like it should. You must create that file by either copying it from my description or downloading the file directly from the download link ive provided.
"When i install the game onto my computer, the game does not install any game folders" This is how the game creates it after a clean install. It should have created the "Options.ini" file but it doesnt do that for windows 7 users.
      Hope this helps :D

Yes I understand that. But the issue I'm having is that the game is not installing correctly into the documents folders from the start. I install it but I only see the folders under the c:programfile foldet. Not the profile folders.

    • @xio2070
      @xio2070  9 лет назад

The game installs in two different places not just "C:\Users\MrZybez\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data"
It is suppose to install in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Command & Conquer The First Decade\Command & Conquer(tm) Generals"
      For windows 7 users.
It pulls the users save and profile information from "C:\Users\MrZybez\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data"
This is what causes the error. There is no options.ini file for windows 7 users. you must create the file yourself in order to fix the error.

OMG. I FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!! AFTER 3 WEEKS OF PAIN AND SUFFERING!!!! Thanks a lot bud. I found out that when you create that damn "options file" it didn't work until I saved it as an "all file" while i renamed and saved the file. Dude. Thanks a lot. Happy new year!

Hey, I managed to get my game to work but my cursor/mouse is invisible, and the sound doesn't work. I looked up this issue and couldn't find any solutions. Making the mouse work is my main concern here. Does anyone have a solution or any suggestions on what I should try?
Note: I tried running it in EVERY compatibility mode offered and the problem persisted. This problem is also in both C&C Generals and C&C Zero Hour
    Edit:
I tried playing the game without the mouse. The green square was visible when selecting multiple units, and I could control stuff that I clicked on. The waypoint circle that shows where the troops are going works. Still can't see the mouse.
I tried running it in windowed mode, and discovered that the mouse works outside of the game window, but as soon as I hover the cursor over the game windows it disappears.

Windows 10 requires "redist" files to run old games. I am using Windows 10 and I can play Generals, Zero Hour and even a mod like Rise of the Red.
