    Hunter, Gather, Parent is my absolute favorite parenting book. It’s so eye opening because it’s counterculture to what we do in the US yet these approaches have been tested for many generations and proven to be effective. Love all these recommendations and this video is reminding me I need to finish Simplicity Parenting 😂❤

    I've read many of the same parenting books as you. I read simplicity parenting when my oldest who is now 9 was a baby and it changed my trajectory as a parent. I often keep the principles in it in the back of my mind.

    This is irrelevant to the actual video but I just want to take a moment to appreciate how cool your hair looks. The silver sheen legitimately looks so great against the brown color, like something you might see on a girl in an anime or something haha. Weird compliment but I just appreciate that you’re not hiding your gray and you also totally pulling it off.

    Excellent. I added all of them to my Amazon cart. My mom tells a story about when I was little and I "helped" her clean the litter box by dragging litter and cat poo all over the house to the toilet to flush it away. She said she was mad, and then I had a meltdown because I said I was trying to help and didn't understand why she was mad. Which of course mad her feel lousy. I don't remember it, but I still take it as a learning experience into my own mothering. I'm pretty decent with the things you listed here, but some good reminders and tips are always beneficial. I taught high school for over a decade and had the misfortune to witness many unpleasant, and weird, things at parent/teacher conferences. As a result, I'm rather hyper aware of what to definitely not do. :/

    I loved Hunt, Gather, Parent as well. // Wanted to tell you that the idea of slowing down "to let our souls catch up to our bodies" comes from nomadic Australian aborigines. They wander, but every once in a while, they just stop. When an observer asked why, he was given that explanation. Peace, Melanie

    I havent ordered the books yet because im still very early into religion and trying to believe. Is HGP and HINTSAB okay to still read if im not super religious yet?

    • @papertownhome
      @papertownhome  6 дней назад +1

      Hey! HGP isn’t a book based on any religion. It’s about the author’s experience learning about how parenting is done by indigenous and hunter-gatherer tribes. HINTSAB is from a Biblical perspective. I certainly don’t think it’ll hurt to read it, but it is from the Christian worldview.

      You might find Abbie Halberstadt’s e-book, “The Gentleness Challenge” helpful. She’s the author of the third book I mentioned and her e-book is all about calling on The Holy Sprit to help shift or hearts and transform the anger.
      Also, Hunt, Gather, Parent is the best book I’ve read about learning to have less anger with my kids. Anger was an area that the author really struggled with.

  • @mary-elizabeth

    You might enjoy Jennifer Pepito's books as well as Jamie Ericksons books.
    Also I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly but you just have two young kids correct? That's all I've seen in your movies but didn't want to assume as some RUclipsrs I watch have older kids who don't want to be filmed. And I have two littles but also two teens so both sets of kids are separated by ten years.

    • @mary-elizabeth
      @mary-elizabeth Месяц назад

      @@papertownhome Oh gotcha, thanks for that. I read Simplicity parenting with my third and really liked it. I was surprised because I was already intuitively doing a lot of the things mentioned so it was gratifying that by me going rogue and trusting myself as a Mom and the Holy Spirit it was the right call.
      No all the books stand alone and are really about different areas of a Moms life, hospitality, homeschool, reading aloud.

    What about tantrums in public spaces?

    • @papertownhome
      @papertownhome  Месяц назад +1

      First, I’d recommend reading “Hunt, Gather, Parent”. Public tantrums were a huge issue for the author and she addresses it thoroughly. Best guidance on that subject that I’ve ever read.
      Second, de-escalating with stillness can work wonders (even in public), and there are examples in the book of how to adapt it, in those circumstances. But, I think it’s less effective if the parent is agitated from it being a public display. So, in that context I’d probably rely on another strategy from the book.

    So, it can be discouraging wheb you're still figuring things out and your oldest is an 11 yo boy! I've skimmed some good books, heard good ideas, but my implementation SUCKS! I've realized slowly 🐌 amd more so the padt 2 years that my own disappointment with myself stifles me and doesn't allow me to believe ANYTHING I DO could work. I tend to think, everything my children do wrong, is MY fault. I am the comman denominator of all things horrible - they just need a different mom! Well, I don't get far with this mindset.
    I've tried to be giving and understanding and calm but firm, i find it difficult, but i just try.
    I have found myself doing all the chores while the kids play or do their jobs, which they don't usually get done unless i do it with them - even the 11 and 9 yo!! So THAT needs to change.
    But one good thing - my 2 yo boy has a quick temper and he becomes MORE angry with reprimands, calling me, "you meanie, mama" (haha its horrible) but the other day he threw a huge tantrum at the library of all places and I took him to the bathroom (i wanted to spank his little leg) I sat him on a changing counter and he couldn't get off. I didn't say anything i just stared stoically and within 3-5 minutes, he was ready for me to pick him and have a conversation and move on! I was so surprised at this and then i listed to this... Oh, it's a thing you're supposed to do!!
