It is going to be a success as Tata group has many subsidiaries to provide support to the airline like TCS ( TATA Consultancy Services which provide software support for Singapore airlines ), Taj SATS ( which provides Catering services for Vistara ), and Taj hotels ( Accommodation for staff during domestic layovers). Challenges they face are aging fleet which need cabin makeover. Which will cost a huge amount of money.

My first flight was with Air India in the late 1990s. OMG what a time those were. When I boarded the plane, I was given a welcome drink and a hot towel. The air hostess asked if it was my first flight, and she helped me put on my seat belts and explained all the facilities on board. All of this in economy class.
Following takeoff, we were served drinks (cold cans) and snacks, followed by a hot meal, tea/coffee, and later drinks/snacks and hot towels just before landing. A wonderful experience compared to the connecting British Airways flight. Although BA was okay, I was emotionally connected to AI.
Even in business class, that kind of service is rare today. I am sure TATA will return glory to AI, after all, it is their pride and passion.

About the free meal on Air India: while on an Air India 'red eyes' flight from Dubai to Mumbai (which route is almost treated by every airline as a domestic one), the air hostess woke me up from a really deep sleep to give me my dinner/breakfast 🤣
Funny thing is, when I refused to take it, she really got surprised to find a person refusing a meal. Please note that the route serves mostly poor laborers working in Gulf countries.
I used to travel between India ans Dubai very frequently those days. From that day, I made it a routine to give away my meals and liquor to any hungry soul on the plane who had skipped a few meals so they could buy something for their family on the way back home.

Hi Josh, great (as always) true reflection of AI. I have been left truly saddened of my personal flight experiences over the years having been an avid traveller to India with AI following the sad demise of Jet airways. AI was historically the best way of travel, courteous of staffs offering the experience of a welcomed guest, well looked after, eager to please and I always wanted to repeat the experience on each journey. However as you suggest it sure has deteriorated and if Tata can, am sure a noticeable difference and travel experience can be achieved, I hope so anyway as there for sure is a deterioration of esteem and pleasurable experience because of dirty, unkempt aircraft, food, service, broken or non functional entertainment systems, withdrawal of complementary toiletries, sleep wear and noise reduction headphones. I always travelled business class so can not comment on economy experience but over the past few years business class is definitely not value for money or the experience in comparison to other competing airlines. Let’s hope Tata does the needed and ensure AI continues to thrive and again be the best airline in india and make India proud! Keep up the good work Josh….

Thanks for uploading this video, Josh. I really wish the Tatas turn things around at Air India but given what they have done with their own airline, Vistara, I'm not so hopeful. Under the Tata and Singapore Airlines ownership Vistara should have been one of Asia's best airlines, but it isn't. The problem is with the Indian industry in general, and the aviation sector in particular. The focus is more on making profits and less on delivering a good product. There is a tendency to make money and control the market at all costs, even by undermining the competition using dirty tricks, if necessary. Indian companies tend to have a fair number of mischief makers and self-seeking disrupters, and principal agentism is rife everywhere. The only thing that would work in India is the whip approach, which is why most Indian managers are nasty beyond belief. You talked about people going on strike in Air India? It wouldn't be surprising if it was actually instigated by the chaps in IndiGo or SpiceJet, using their planted agents. To end I would say, all the best to the Tatas. There's hope even if there's nothing else.

This is not the pollution which is totally responsible for low visibility .India unfortunately lies in somewhat geographical region where the dust of Middle East countries come through Arabian sea and reach northern India .Second thing is that Soil is loosely binded so there is very low density of sand and they flow with wind unlikely in other countries .

Josh Cahill, feedback and criticism are the backbones of any developing industry. You can criticize food on any airline, but learn to respect food. The way you have described the food of Air India on your flight to Kolkatta is not good. You can criticize the food being served, but don't make sweeping comments like " it looked like someone vomited into my plate, and to be honest it tasted the way it looked like ". Do you think that the airlines in the west are absolutely wonderful? Now that the TATA's have Air India, its destiny will change.

Hope that the Tata Group bring better days to Air India. You flew from DEL to CCU. CCU, decades ago was a major stopover on the routes between Europe and Asia/Austalia.

    Some suggestions for Air India....
    1. Change the livery.! the present livery brings to the fore memories of a very painful service and standards in the past.
    2. Design the domestic economy product along the lines of low cost carriers like the British Airways. It will make the airline service leaner and cleaner.
    3. Chuck the entire long haul fleet and change to Airbus A 350 and an outstanding premium product like JRD Tata did in 1960's and 70's.
    4. Change the runny yellow dal (lentil) and runny gravy and rice, all in one rolled in a foil meal. People want premium restaurant service.... which means the best of tikkas and dal makhani served in signature cutlery and crockery with AI insignia.
    5. Safety demonstration video to be changed to the likes of VISTARA.
    6. India is better situated geographically in comparison to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha...We bost some of the best hotels and sites in the world some of which are again owned by TATAs...many touristy offers can be introduced for fliers flying through India..
    7. Lastly, the ground staff and the crew on board must put their best shoe forward...unpolished shoes, undone hair, goddy makeup and unpleasant manners must see the exit door....Charm, hospitality, politeness and wit is what makes a crew stand out and not a pretty face...I still can't forget some very charming crew members in the 80's and 90's who could make everyone feel at ease during the flight....Introduction of serving a preflight bottle of water alongwith signature Air India candies will be very welcome and will break the ice between the passengers and the crew like the earlier times...it also helps the crew do their safety check in a polite way.
    🙄😄👍🥂

The state of the airline unfortunately reflects the general government’s attitude in everything they do - “Chalta Hai” ! It also reflects on what the general public happily accepts which unfortunately or fortunately is a very practical approach for example, they dont care if the tray table is broken as long as it works, they don’t care if there is no inflight entertainment as long as they can get to their destination, etc. Think people traveling in those busses before the luxury busses like Volvos, Mercedes, etc made it to india. We as people have a long way to go to appreciate details, perfection, cleanliness, etc. However, i think only Kingfisher made it in true style in the modern era and I really hope to see the Maharaja of the Sky rule the skies again. Great video Josh.

Missing paint can be rather dangerous but first it causes more drag and increase fuel usage as it's not smooth air flow under or over the wing, it's all about aerodynamics also in lightning strikes its extremely dangerous as exposed metal can cause strikes to form in the wrong places which no one wants.😉 great video.

Hi Josh: Thanks for this review. I do think that the Tatas will eventually turn this around and make it a profitable airline but it's going to take a big effort. Tatas have the experience and the economic wherewithal for doing this job. I never had a chance to fly Air India when it was a great airline as i was a young kid in the 70s. However, I have flown with them on domestic as well as international flights in recent years and the service was underwhelming, at best. I sincerely hope that the new owners turn things around and make this carrier the pride of India and the World, again.
