- Most Pokemon regions have new fossil Pokemon introduced alongside them. But Johto, the 2nd Pokemon region, introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver, does NOT! This is terrible because Fossil Pokemon are SO COOL! So let's design some of our own I guess.

Thats why it's so difficult to study early bat and pterosaur evolution.
They/their early ancestors are/were very small and had fragile bones.

My only problem with these fossil Pokémon is that they seem far too complex to be from gen 2. They would fit right in with gen 9 Pokémon, but gen 2 Pokémon are generally more simpler than they are.
I get this. Gen 2 has some of my favourite Pokemon but the average design was way more simple. I could see these appearing in a modern Johto game though. They're very interesting, deep and cute!
I think the diictodont line fits in pretty well (God knows there’s a lot of brown in Johto) but the insects are probably too complex
I feel the 1st stages might work, but yeah they are a bit too complex, especially the final evolutions. Mantium, the ant one if I got the name wrong, feels like it could work at its earliest in maybe Gen III just because that's when we got Spinda, a Pokémon who also has the cubic butt load of (custom) forms.
Eh, think of it more like if there was a new hypothetical remake of gen 2 with some new additions
I mean if lets go johto / legends celebi adds new pokemon, these would fit in perfectly as gen 9/10 additions to the roster
Love how the first set could also be related to bulbasaur because it having the seeds in its back realized it can get energy from it so it starts by putting seeds on its children to lesson its food consumption and after so long we get what is the bulbasaur line

I wish we just had more than just 3 fossil mon at most per region, technically 4 for galar. There's alot of concepts you can make from prehistoric Pokémon within the main timeline, excluding the paradox mons.

@@user-pv2fz6wm2g My problem with the Scarlet Paradox Pokémon is how most of them aren't really based on any ancient fauna but are really just modern Pokémon with a ''primitive''' look. The only exceptions are Walking Wake resembling a feathered theropod and Great Tusk sorta resembling ancient proboscideans like mammoths.
If you have a DS or 3DS you can play a game series that is very similar to pokemon, but is entirely fossils, and also the fossils are of real animals that lived on Earth (except a few made specifically for the games). Fossil Fighters, Fossil Fighters Champions, and Fossil Fighters Frontier. I dont recommend using an emulator for playing them as you lose access to one of the most important mechanics of the series, using the mic to blow dust off the fossils as you remove them from the rocks. I honestly wish they'd bring it back, but change how blowing the dust off works

Japan does have a couple of dinosaur fossils. There was Fukuiraptor, a Megaraptorid, Kamuysaurus, a Hadrosaur, Fukuititan, a sauropod, and more others than one would think
I love the concept of ancient pokemon. Imagine a Legends game where you see all these fossil pokemon and other ancient forms of existing pokemon. Imagine more dinosaur like Meganium, Tropius, Torterra, or Charizard. Maybe a sabertooth Luxray. Mons like Yanmega, Slaking, and mamoswine can exist as they are like the Meganura dragonfly, the megatherium sloth, and the wooly mammoth
Really any pokemon whose inspiration has a well known ancient ancestor or hell any pokemon that can learn ancient power since every single fossil mon can learn it naturally
Maybe giant Relicanth inspired by Mawsonia and Megalocoelacanthus.
So we play as a cave person who hunts these ancient pokemon by chucking rocks and bashing skulls with clubs.

Swaysosore has to have a signature ability that's a grass equivalent of steelworker (farmer or fieldworker)
Fun Fact: there's a species of Dicynodont (those beaked, two tusked therapsid synapsids) named Bulbasaurus phylloxyron, which the species name phylloxyron translates roughly to leaf razor from ancient Greek. It's noted that it's describers stated its name "may not be entirely coincidental."

Frankly, I wished a game had a sidestory quest thing that was basically jurassic Park, dealing with a criminal group abusing the research facility that revives the pokemon, maybe its even how you learn and gain access to fossil revival

I have loved the Diictodon ever since I saw the ones in " Walking with Monsters" troll the Gorgonopsid so of course I love Euhdont.

Still hoping we get a Stegosaurus Pokémon because I've seen some really cool designs, one of favorites so far was this design where the Pokémon was a Fire/Electric typing and the plates along it's back were Solar Panels
It’s kind of crazy that in three years there weren’t more fossil revival efforts that at least crossed the border to Johto
That Ant Pokemon would have been my favorite pokemon growing up!
I love their design and appearence, they're really well done, especially Mantium with the ancient energy veins it has, so cool.
But they don't feel like they come from gen 2. When I look at them I think gen 5, 6 or 7.
I mean, I could see Swaysosore maybe being a Gen 4 Pokemon as it feels like the physical Grass attacker that Carnivine was supposed to be.
But Mantium definitely feels like a Kalos Pokemon despite all the Chinese influence.

Toyeen feels pretty at home in Johto at least
Given that they're supposedly designed to fit within the Generation 2 Pokémon games' Johto Region, my biggest criticism would've been that their designs might've seemed a tad bit overly-complex compared to other Gen 2 designs, or even Gen 3 or 4 designs in one notable case.
For example, I'd suggest the following changes to make these designs seem more simplified, in order to better fit the rest of the Gen 2 designs:
- Euhdont could've stood to have maybe fewer spots or blotches on its body, but otherwise, it seemed to fit in nicely enough with the relatively simplistic Gen 2 design aesthetics.
- Swaysosore would've probably needed to have smoother, less-detailed dirt-fur on its back (though a few saplings could've stayed), and its camouflage-like patterns could've been removed in favor of a more simplistic tannish color design, as seen in Pokémon like Sandslash or Donphan.
- Toyeem's design seemed simple enough that I'd have had no issues with it being with the rest of the Gen 2 Pokémon lineup.
- Finally, for Mantium (whose design seemed VERY modern and complex, like from Gen 7 and onwards), I'd have removed most, if not all, of the glowing cracks throughout its body (perhaps leaving some small ones on the body, such as the top of the head or thorax, to preserve a bit of its porcelain-like design aesthetics), removed some, if not all, of the spots on its body (except for the abdomen, to preserve its resemblance to a domino), and redesigned the eyes so that they'd better resemble, say, a Venomoth's or Ariados's eyes, with a black iris.
Not sure how gamefreak will pull this off but I'd love to see a rock/ghost fossil pokemon
Maybe a fossil of some dinosaur that failed halfway through, killing a partially living pokemon, turning it into ghost type? A bit morbid, but Gamefreak has done worse ig.
I'd just love any Rock/Ghost Pokémon.
How about a ghost pokemon that goes in and out of its fossil, like a Yu-Gi-Oh! monster from ancient Egypt. And not only that, it also switches types if its in the fossil (rock/ghost) or out of it (pure ghost)
I would just make a haunted t-rex skeleton like in Night At The Museum but made to look more like a Pokémon.

I just hope that fossils in general come back, no matter what prehistoric creature. Gen 7 and gen 9 didn't had any and gen 8 had those abomination i wouldnt even consider fossils, not counting those, 10 years has passed since last true fossils (Tyrantrum Aurorus in gen 6)

The concepts are definitely awesome! Love the twists with how you chose the design ideas for the species you used for it. And the designs are super adorable! Mantium in particular has a really cute personality in how you showed it in the video.
This just makes me wish that Game Freak made signature moves a core part of pokemon from the start... imagine how cool it would be if the fossil mons and Legendary birds had signature moves (and Mewtwo didn't need to wait for 5 generations to finally get his lol)
I did not get excited about the idea of a fossil ant pokemon, but I absolutely adore Mantium. I don't know why. It's just such an adorable execution of a kinda crazy concept.
Being honest, Swaysosores don’t feel “fossily” as their focus in agriculture could be what inspired human civilization in the Pokemon World to get kicking

- Diictodons are so adorable (you can thank the show Primeval) so I like Euhdont while as for Swaysosore I love it’s design & hard working nature, but after seeing this I really want a Gorgonopsid fossil Pokémon which were are also found in China, has large fangs, & Late Permian period
- Toyeen I love that it’s a bug covered with amber & Mantium having a toy theme to them
I guess the theme for both of these fossil Pokémon is the saying "work hard, play hard".
I love the design origin and connection to the region. They also look very cool but for a Gen 2 Pokemon they maybe look a little bit to complex. Probably more like a Gen 5 or 7 Pokemon.

Well, Gen 2 pokemon aren't that complex of a design! My main issue is with the Evolved Silverfish Pokémon. Perfect for Gen 8 and 9!... defintely unable to be rendered faithfully in a small pixel format though. The Eudont line I could imagine it, but not the evolved Insect. Which is a shame, because I'd love to have the Insect ones in my team! :'3
I'm impressed with how detailed and educational this was, very nice work and I will check out your other videos, I love Fossil Pokemon and now that I'm literally getting back into the games I plan on, sorry, catching them all.

I dont want to be that guy but looking back at early fossil pokemon they were really...simple in their design and concept and these feel almost too complicated to be from gen 2
I had honestly forgotten that Johto did not have Fossil types. I STILL, however, am tiiiicked that Alola doesn't give me a giant Mosasaurus pokemon and maybe a Megalodon-type pokemon. Yeah, yeah...I get why, but I ALSO want to be able to fix the utter body horror nightmares that they made the Gen 8 fossils into. We could have had a Stegosaurus one (I could finally complete my Dinobots team!), the big doofy tank fish with big teeth, and some kind of dragon type. It would have been awesome...so so much less "this is gross...like a cenobite Whismur played with dead flesh" than the pokemon we got.
Toyeen looks like a common ancestor of Trapinch (Because of Vibrava, looking at tail), Durant, Grubbin, and Sewaddle. There could be more Pokemon, but those stood out to me. Kind of how Tirtouga is an ancestor of all turtle/tortoise Pokemon. Looks good.
Ya know..... If the Johto version of Legends game add prehistoric Pokemon, I would bet Mandibuzz and Drednaw might be perfect for a reason

Always enjoy these Lockemon videos and the first three designs are really good! But with Mantium, I gotta say, you went a bit over the top design wise. A kintsuge ant with maybe the domino OR diabolo would have been enough actually.
I'd say go for the diabolo as the rock type move sounds really cool!
In Pokémon Gold and Silver Prototype data has a some unused fossil Pokémons like one that looks like a gargoyle but with no arms and another one that is some kind of armored fish creature and the other that kind of looks like Cranidos but with some gem formations and the last one is a skeletal dinosaur
Swaysosore looks like a friend and I must protect it at all costs.

Ceratomyrmex is a genus of "hell ant", an extinct clade of ants which all had strange jaws. PBS Eons did a video on them.
Great video. If you want to continue this series, a video about "What If Other Regions Had A Single-Stage Fossil Pokemon?" is certainly doable. So is a video featuring the Galar fossils' original true forms.
My pick for Unova would be a Rock/Ghost Coelophysis, because of the Ghost Ranch fossil bed.
And for Kalos, an ornithischian dinosaur of some kind for full representation of the three clades within Dinosauria: Theropoda, Sauropodamorpha, and Ornithischia.

Got to say as much as a love having an ancient mammal pokemon, the idea of an ancient advanced civilisation pokemon has got my creative juices pumping. I am going to have to steal that for my next ptu campaign
Correction: 睡 (Shui) is not sleepy, or tired - it's by far most common use is just to mean "Sleep", as in the verb. When we say "sleepy, weary, etc", we use 累 (Lei), or 疲倦 (PiJuan), or something like that.
I am in love with the second line! It would maybe even be my favorite Pokemon if it was official! So good!

I honestly love the idea of Fossilmon as an Paleontologist i really enjoy anything Dinosaur synapsid diapsid Placiderm etc related as we learn more and its recognized by Media. I also would love to see more Permian and Cenozoic inspired Pokemon like the Oligocene and Miocene have so many awesome and interesting mammals
Toyeem and Mantium have got to be my favorite of the two, it's a fun looking pokemon and looks like it would be pretty good for as bug type.

The "een" part of Toyeen's name is pretty similar to Irish. In that language the suffix "-ín" (sometimes anglicised as "-een") is added to words when referring to little or cute things. The name Róisín, for instance, means "little rose"

I still would love a pokemon game where we would go back into pre-historic time and fight and catch all pre-historic and the origional alive fossils and having their true origional typings.
Hell give some pokemon from our future their pre-historic ancestors.

If I remember correctly, Kansai is treated similarly to how we treat the country in the US. They have a dialect that is very easy to identify and is usually considered out of place among cityfolk.

I have an idea for a video if you're up for requests. All of the fossil Pokemon but their Galar's fossil Pokemon, by which I mean the parts and bits and pieces are mixed and match. So flying bastiodon or swimming Aerodactyls, stuff like that.
at 11:23 when you mentioned plate tectonics i thought it would be cool if you replaced the fur on swaysosore with and land plate. like avalugg or torterra. this would then bring more of that rock typing in that it has to have becuse fossils. it would also made make the shape more simple like how a lot of gen 2 shapes where.
I like that the ants look just a tiny bit like they could be related to the Paris line.👌
A funny thing I noticed about Mantium is that its yo-yo kind of resembles a mushroom, and many ants do farm fungi. So probably an unintended connection, but cool nonetheless.
Amazing video, Gnoggin. The Euhdont & Swaysosore Evolution Line is Interesting and feel sorry for The Swaysosore, and the Toyeen and Mantium Evolution Line is Amazing. What about The Ancient Pokemon for the Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, & Galar Regions, Gnoggin?
As someone who loves bug types, Mantium is all I could ever ask for. Such a cute design, with plenty of detail to boot!
Have you ever thought about putting your region and these pokemon ideas into a fan game? I mean the logistics of it would probably be a bit of a challenge, i don't know what's involved to start with but it would all be so insanely good! Fully reckon it would go down as the best fan game made, with the amount of lore and effort you have already put in let alone whatever plans you've got for video's going forward

My only "problem" with there kind of videos is that I fear that Pokémon Company will never make exactly those cool Pokémon as they are probably too proud to ask your artist for allowance.
But I really like the designs. You guys make the best fake-mons!
I think for Johto the theme could be the evolution of reproduction as breeding was the big new thing in Johto. The proto mammal could still work for the transition to live birth. Then you could have anything else from the timeline as the other one.
Since they’re ants, how about a tweak to that signature move where if there are 2 of them on one side, the yo-yo guarantees hitting more
Having a Lystrosaurus pokemon be a farmer works on an entire other level as well. Diictodons/Lystrosaurs were some of the very, very, very few animals to survive the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, which wiped out almost 90% of all species on Earth. Most of the reason that they were so common in the first place was because all their predators (and pretty much every other biological niche) were gone, so they were able to spread out massively. In-universe, their farming probably helped keep plants alive long enough for other plants to start bouncing back and thus, the rest of the ecosystem. No wonder they have to work so hard!
Given the lack of genuine plant and fungi Pokemon, it could also be fun to see some actual Fossil Pokemon that are based on ancient fungi and plants; go back far enough, there were actually giant fungi that grew up like trees and grew bigger than most modern trees.
There's an excellent documentary on Curiosity Stream called The Kingdom: How Fungi Made Our World; if it was not for fungi venturing on dry land before everything else, chances are plants and animals probably wouldn't have evolved past living coastal water when it came time to spread out over the planet; the documentary actually covers this and how it was possible for fungi to be the pioneers that they were, and probably still are.
The top breaking or falling off would be a great fainting animation.
