- In today’s feature we’ll talk about the perception that Joey Badass has fallen off. As you know Joey Badass Is a rapper that blew up around 2012 behind a nostalgic sound in the perfect time where hip hop was looking for new blood after acts like Jay, Lil Wayne, Eminem and others that dominated the early 2000 were at the end of their run. Joey Badass seemed like the perfect guy. He was supposed to be NEXT in line. What Happened?

Can Joey be a star in this era? What does he need to do?
No, people slept on him during his mixtapes and debut album solo including with beastcoast. Which led to the album flopping and less people supporting it. The final nail on the coffin is the pro era artist leaving the group which stunted his growth as a artist.
Hopefully he will reconciled past members of pro era, so they can create and release another album with guest production from griselda records. Then he'll get his respect back as a artist/person.
Are you ever gonna do Vic Mensa or Spaceghostpurrp
Like you said, he never had that "it factor". If he didn't have it then, he certainly won't have it now. He might've been a dope rapper (as many hyped up back then, saying he was) but, that doesn't cut it. He doesn't have any charisma or personality to be a star. He's just an underground rapper.
Drag-on please!
DO REDMAN AKA EMINEM STOLE HIS WHOLE STYLE FROM!
I remember that first album was sooooo perfect to me at the time. I absolutely loved how they make classic hip hop so fresh and new. And they were super young
Yeah man the 1999 tape was just somethin else
His first was dope! Sadly he got into that mainstream hanging with ASAP Rocky and more
@@91Definite Agree! I noticed the shift with him once he got more mainstream and that's when I stopped listening to him. I had a good run with him and I'll always appreciate his earlier body of works. If this is his dream, I'm glad that he's living it, but it's not my style.
Joey got big in the underground and was a leader of the boom bap resurgence at one point but he completely abandoned it because he was afraid of being labeled one dimensional. I understand his reason but I was really disappointed because he should’ve had more classics like 1999 by now.
Word, if he would of just stuck to boom bap and incorporated it in New sounds it would of been great
Yup I just explained this same shit in another comment bro it was really a shame. I was never trying to box him but you can’t blame me if you literally market yourself a certain way.
I went to one of his concerts during his World Domination tour in 2015 or 16 to shop some beats and make connects, but that was rightttt around the time he started going in a different direction. Didn’t know whether to be disappointed in myself for being too late or him for just abandoning that community
Ok. Interesting. Makes sense.
I thought he was just trying to broaden his audience. Cause the ones that still loved his boom bap sound....we are still there...so idk if that was what did it. But idk 🤔
AABA >1999
I think that losing Steez took some of his passion for the game. They came in the rap game together and then to see his homie leave whilst they were beginning to take off can be heartbreaking. He found passion elsewhere and doesn't feel the pressures of the industry like other rappers do .
I don't think Steez and Joey had the relationship most think imo. At the time Steez died I think Joey and maybe the whole pro era were distancing themselves from Steez. He got on some deep shit and niggas got big headed. My thought. Joey always seen Steez as competition.
@@stuntedgrowthmusic false
@@brothashizztv258 fr, STEEZ and Joey were close. STEEZ towards the end of his life just kinda was somewhere else, he wasnt existing in reality. Joey even said in interviews STEEZ would say shit and they wouldn't get what hes saying, and you could see that if you saw STEEZ Twitter posts around the time he died too. Joey maybe distanced himself but it wouldn't be out of spite, that's his homie, maybe the stuff dude was saying freaked him out or made him uncomfortable.
@@stuntedgrowthmusic not true
As someone who grew up rapping with his friends, I can look at joey and Steez and tell they fed off the passion and talent of each other. Friends/ Rivals. The best kind of friendships.
I was a huge fan of Joey and Pro Era back in 2012... Here's my thoughts on what happen to Joey:
1. He was someone who crafted his style around East Coast 90's style of rhyming and beats. After he released 1999 and Summer Knights, the popular landscape of hip hop shifted drastically towards a more Southern trap sound where catchy melodies and triplet flows were more sexy and bars were secondary... This was never Joey's forte' as a rapper. Someone like Tyler The Creator (even though he wasn't a conventional boom bap artist, he did start off more heavily rap focused), Tyler could adapt his style because he was an eccentric artist with a creative mind and a talent for self-producing. Joey didn't have any of those things in his bag. Dude was just a traditional New York emcee. He tried venturing into some other styles like trap and dance club music occasionally, but there were just many artists that did it better and more authentic than him at the end of the day...
2. Feel like his voice got noticeably deeper and less smooth after 1999... Which makes sense, because in 1999 he was literally 16 yrs old recording those songs... Idk, i prefer his younger voice. He started doing deep raspy shit later on and it just didn't sound as good to the ear for me... He's not the only artist i had this problem with. Ski Mask The Slump God also experienced a noticeable change in his voice if we compared his songs from like 2015/2016 and post 2017... Compare his song Like a Soccer Mom and something that came out in the last couple of years... It's like a different person rapping.
3.Joey made it to the top and lost most of his hunger and passion at this point. And i can't blame him. Dude has made it in the rap game. He's one of the most recognized rappers in the last 10 years, he's financially set, he's staring in TV shows, he's got a podcast, he's a father right now... Compare that to when he was 16 living with his mom and going to school and nobody knew him. He's in a completely different situation in life.
Love these vids man. One thing that really did him in was that 2017 album All Amerikkka Badass not getting the love and sells it should gotten because fans have a one track mind. That same year Damn came out and it was almost like fans only knew how to support and except one conscious rapper at a time. You can tell Joey poured alot into that album. Its probably on of the most underrated albums in the last 5yrs
Yea it was a shame a lot of other great rap albulms dropped but the kendrick and drake wave took heat off of everyone
The album didn’t get the sells because it leaked before it dropped
Super Facts!
That super predator with ghost went so hard
He shouldn’t have dropped Devastated as the lead single Imo
He is a great addition to the " Kanan" cast. His role is perfect . I really enjoy the show.
I wish he had time to continue his role on the Wu Tang show as well
I remember when I first heard his debut mixtape I was so excited that I heard some hip hop. His biggest growth stunt was to me was losing his original sound and sounding more like everyone else. At least his acting career is trending up.
I was actually waiting for this episode. I feel like what happened with Joey Badass (Pro Era) is similar to what happened with Asap Rocky (Asap Mob). Even though there was still some productivity the absence of Capital Steez really hurt the momentum.
Rest in peace, Yams and Capital Steez.
for sure, Joey would've been going 10x harder if he was still here. Joey said that he felt like not wanting to rap anymore in 2013 but continued because he believed it was STEEZ would've wanted. Also, he always says STEEZ was competition to him, he always wanted to one up him on verses so theres that motivation aspect too.
Rip steez we miss you 😘
Joey has and will never need to go gigantic the man makes moves but maintains his stride gotta respect that
That man Steez ain’t kill himself fr. IYKYK
we talk about Joey in my music criticism class all the time. it has to be absolutely discouraging to have your most known and highly regarded project be something you dropped at 16. I couldn't imagine making music I thought was way better than that, only to have it constantly compared to something that I feel like I've outgrown. I love 1999 as much as anybody (I have a signed vinyl on my wall), but I understand Joey's dilemma, he didn't wanna make boom bap forever and he teased the same album for like 3 years, probably because he knows how resistant his fans can be to change. add on constant comparisons to Steez, his inability to drop King Capital (because he can't come to an agreement with Steez's estate), the fact that he's supposed to be the leader of Pro Era, etc etc. music becomes a lot more difficult to make when there's all this added pressure. I'll listen to anything Joey drops, so I hope he's making what he wants.
Even though he did not sign to a label his name is out there and he has work acting also. I'm willing to bet he has more money than most of these rappers signed to major labels. A major label deal is nothing more than a bad loan anyway
Joey was signed to Cinematic Music Group and it is under both Sony and Epic. What are you talking about when you say he did not sign to a label?
@@IllDawgable he’s talking about a Major Label…. And that’s very obvious
Cinematic Music Group is a label that is under both Sony and Epic. That "independent" position that artists claim is just a facade.
Independent label with major distribution. Cause most of the good Independent labels...and even Independent distribution companies...they've All got bought by these big companies recently...so it is what it is.
I'm starting to see that. True independent is controlling manufacturing and distribution otherwise you're a slave to the rhythm
@@MoneyPlethoraAlways Lol. People gonna keep moving the goal post on Independent bruh. IJS
@@jayc5756 It's no dif' when females say "Imma boss" and guys "I own my own business". I'm in tune with reality if I don't see official paperwork it's hogwash
Cinematic is independent. Having a distribution deal with a major is not the same as having a deal with a major. Only thing a major is doing is paying the upfront for your distro. If you dont have distro you gotta go pay for CDs. A lot of independent record labels had distro deals back in the 90s, like Cash Money and Rap A Lot. some of you dudes know nothing about the game. No wonder so many artists and producers get rvped.
I definitely just suggested this one a few days ago. You are super quick, or you already had this in the works. 😅Either way I’m very excited. Been with you since the early stunted growth basketball days and happy to see your growth.
When I asked him to do Amerie and he did, I was hella hype (although it took awhile since his focus is usually rappers) I know this made you feel special - whether in the works or not 😊
Very well put. Some people who are good at something have a deeper passion for something else.
I don't think he fell off, I think he just wanted to do something different. Not a bad thing at all. Follow your heart bro.
exactly. Joey is better than 95% of the rap game lyrically, he dont really gotta prove himself too much, 1999 is arguably his biggest album and so alot of people can see that he was a spitter and respect it.
You failed to mention he fell back after he helped write post Malone rockstar that check is crazy gives him time to do what he wants
It was joey and t pain right?
@@thm8787 yup
I will always look back on those pro-era days with fond memories. Such a good time for hip hop
He made it created his opportunity, groomed his fanbase. Lived through a traumatic event and stayed with his head on his shoulders kept it true to himself and grew as an artist into a man. In my humble opinion he is everything he should be and his virality during adolescence shouldn't be what you measure and compare everything else he created to because thats just disrespectful. Hit the nail on its head. Great video !
He won an Oscar. He can do more than rap.

Joey is nice on the microphone, and he is killing it on Power 3.
Him switching his sound was what did it for me. Shit hurt me fr.
Facts! What this new angle on the revenge song? Sounds like every other rapper now.
The switch from the boom bap bro. I’m 26 and been a boom bap head since I was a child. And of course people thought it was weird I was into old shit. Then when Joey popped on the scene with what seemed like an authentic boom bap sound, shit was like a breath of fresh air. I’m all for growth but he literally marketed himself as that type of rapper only to completely abandon it. It’s fine though. Pro era spawned so much dope talent on SoundCloud during that era. We (SoundCloud beat makers and rappers) tried to make that wave permanent but a lot of it just ended up getting coined as Lo Fi.
Y’all should listen to the new song head high that he just dropped and you might be relieved
@@stuntedgrowthmusic bro fucking L why you ignore Head High ? plus teh AABA disrespect is nuts. you even heard it?
@@aldali724 he didn’t completely abandon that sound. Just listen to his most recent song “head high” or “shine” or even “let it breath”. He’s still rapping at a high level. Y’all don’t give artists any room to experiment with different sounds.
Will Smith Next!!! Multiple plantain album who wasn’t so bad lyrically and did we’ll commercially despite being called “corney”. His rap career is largely forgotten and deserves a second look.
That’s a good onw
S/o Nas for the Grammy tho
Once he went mainstream he lost the style that made him hot. I remember listening to one of his newer songs and not even recognizing him
Others touched on this but Joey had mentioned in interviews after 1999 blew up that he didn’t wanna b boxed in as a “backpack” rapper and as a young kid I’m sure he heard lil Wayne and the carter 3 mayb t-pain and got influenced to some extent and you could even hear on some of his tracks after 1999 like 95 til infinity him wanting to lean more into the melodic sing songy shit at the end of the day I look at this music shit as a creative outlet so I’ll never get mad at an artist for wanting to try new sounds or experiment with different types of beats or whatever but yeah I thought it was a bad move for Joey to distance himself from that boom nap sound
Lol he’s never been mainstream
@@johndavis9321 imo it wasn't a bad move. I already know if he kept making boom bap he would've been less respected cause he couldn't play with different sounds. Plus bro music is still amazing. His recent releases like The revenge was mediocre and Head High was cool but nothing amazing. The light pack was actually amazing tho. All his albums are great and where is this notion that he becomes this singy-rapper type artist. he ain't no damn young thug or anything bro just mainly sounds melodic on the hooks.... which is normal for today's rappers.
Joey badass and pro era in general arent talked about enough fr. I remember hearing xxxtentacion say somewhere that pro era and STEEZ were a big inspiration. They had a hugeee impact on the new generation. they seriously brought back boom bap for a good few years and completely shook up the game for a while. I still listen to their old music that whole wave of beast coast will never be replicated. LONGLIVESTEELO👑
Joey was never meant to be a star. He never had the IT factor he was a solid emcee who can make dope records but he seems like the guy who never really wanted to be famous.
But they chosen him over Capital Steez cause Joey appealed to the younger crowd and Steez didn’t 😔💯
Joey has "IT" he's becoming big in acting
Lol if he didn't want the fame then he wouldn't be acting, he had no problem when everyone was posting Joey Badass AND pro era
First I have to say I love this channel 💕.. and recommendations... PAUL WALL
I agree with everything you said and 95 til Infinity is my favorite as well it will forever remain in rotation.
I really wish they didn’t make the decision to take down the aPROcalypse mixtape off of Spotify, I miss hearing Steez.
They took it down because they didn’t pay the producers or anyone who worked on the project itself before dropping on streaming platforms
@@Leekix thank you! I never knew that and I stand by their decision then
Man I look forward to these videos. You should do Project Pat next. He had hella buzz down here in the South with Mista Don’t Play. But then he had to serve time in prison for a gun charge.
Man that north Memphis track is a fuckin slap
All American badass is a classic album
Nah. First half of the album is too weak to be considered a classic. A very solid album though
A stunted growth on Slick Rick would be dope

Big Joey Badass fan and the Pro Era, hopefully can see one on King Capital Steez who was a lil ahead of his time
I feel like the whole beast coast movement lost momentum after 2018. It seem like everyone from PE to FBZ wanted to sound more “mainstream” especially with that Beast Coast album they dropped in 2019. That made a lot of OG fans from 2012-2015 era stop listening
That Acting & modeling bagg 💰💰💰 hit different ‼️ Ask LL Cool J,

Ice Cube still drops albums.
Unpopular opinion, I guess:
Joey Bada$$ improved with every album; I love 1999 alot, but B4DA$$ and All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ are some of my all-time favourite records. The man hasn't turned in a weak project, and it baffles me how people claim he never lived up to 1999, he's exceeded it
I disagree with the other 2 being better than 1999 but you're right that they are amazing projects. B4DASS is an amazing album with so many amazing song. I would argue it's a classic but that would be controversial. ALL-AMERIKKKAN definitely highlighted his strength as an artist which was beautiful and arguably one of the most underrated albums of the 2010s. I might think 1999 is his best but you're right they are definitely right up there with 1999.
Pro era…what a disappointing crew. Could’ve been something. Sadly, the whole Beast Coast movement fell apart. They had a solid run during the early to mid 2010s.
So the beast coast album doesn't exist or what lmao they're still goin hard, idk why everyone hates on that album
Also love his role in Raising Kanan
I thought he was ready to take off after that American badass album. It was so good!
Perfect bro this was well awaited !
I love the classic hop hop sound. Despite that though, how far would that sound really go in the modern day? Critically acclaimed but commercially cold.
In the still of Joey with the red suit and kinda high-top fade he kinda looked like Boosie hahaha. Anyways, this was a great video! I was always a fan of his, but didn't keep up enough to know his ins and outs. In my mind I had a bit of the same thought that this video portrayed and I like Joey for that! I like his career. Not sure if he is totally happy with it, but I'm glad he didn't become an industry artifact and remained JOEY BADASS!
You should definitely do Erykah Badu NEXT!!!💯
The legendary Erykah? I don't think you can cap the potential of an all time great artist.
He still dropping heat
you should do digable planets
One of my favorite new era rappers 🤘🏼💪🏼✊🏼❤️ I’m talking bout like same age as me and after the greatest of greatest 🎶
I remember when I first heard of Joey lol I was 23 walking down the block of his high school he wasn’t even a senior yet and some kid outside on the corner of the school on a skateboard kept shouting his “1999” mixtape out HEAVY I was intrigued by the cover and title alone went home looked it up on “datpiff” and I was SOLD! It was a time when they said New York rap was done and there came this 16 year old kid. He still hasn’t reached his peak his moment is still a block away
I think he still cold, he doing a helluva job on power book III:raising kanan As well
The Last Emperor should get one, or R.A the Rugged Man something underground
@Charlie Manson i wouldnt call joey underground...but i guess he is
Joey never fell off...he grew as an artist...sometimes lyricism gets compromised a lil bit when song writing becomes the focus...i think his 1st 2 albums are better than 1999 n summer Knights personally...he hasn't released a project that was worthy of the statement he fell off tho...
You should do one on Murder Inc. Not the label, but the supergroup consistsing of Jay-Z, DMX and Ja Rule. They was somewhat Jay-Z's answer to Nas's The Firm but without a female emcee. That would also be a good Stunted growth episode if you haven't done it already.
Jay is insecure dmx was too real. The rest well
Joey is very fire I was in highschool playin the whole pro era . He became a tv star now so he don’t have to do as much musically but his music still good
Yeah. You're right bro
he became a good ghost writer lol 🤣💯
Whatever happened to The Era? U should do a stunted growth on PE. There was a lot of dope members in that group. Haven't heard anything from them since idk.
Y’all niggas stuck in the past, Joey still legendary & do legendary shit
Honestly Joey is just living I feel like he’s like a less hungry J Cole losing Steez then finding someone like X and losing him possibly made him lose some love within his craft. I can’t speak for the man only my POV
What killed Joey was 3 things:
1 Wasting time trying to make his crew rather than focus on establishing himself
2 Giving up entirely on boombap rather than giving it a modern flare like kendrick J.Cole or even Drake.
3 Trying to make himself into a conscious rapper rather than focusing on his strenght: bars
are you saying kendrick, jcole, and drake gave boom bap a modern flare. Plus conscious rapper and bars are not mutually exclusive but I get what you mean but disagree ALL-AMERIKKKAN was an amazing album and very underrated. No opinion really on your first point.
@@Funfun6000 many of the flows those 3 rappers use could flow on old school flows. I dont like all-amerikkkan. It feels like Joey punching above his weight. He’s better at dropping bars.
@@emmanuelmondesir1314 but they don't normally rap on boom-bap beats so would them having many flows really matter. till this day joey got a voice for boom bap although he doesn't use that beat anymore. How did you feel about summer knight and B4DASS
He’s killing it playing unique on raising kanan
Joey Bad is good he's still one of the dopest Mc's plus he's killing it on the acting scene.
Joey bada$$ is in my top 5 fav emcees of all time. His career is so interesting because his mixtape discography is legendary, like flawless.. especially 1999. And his first 2 albums were received well too (I personally loved the first, not so much the 2nd though) yet people want so much more. I miss the pro era days but hey he’s a actor now I guess 🤷🏾♂️
A man with vision always win.
Steez had more star power than joey did
No one gave a fuck about steez til he killed himself. That's a literal fact.
Nah. But STEEZ was deffinetly a better spitter than Joey and tbh I could see STEEZ more than Joey working on a mainstream rap record. He got the better voice for it too
That was awesome and on point! You should do a video on DAS EFX.
Joey's downfall was not playing to his strengths and staying in his own lane. He didn't wanna get "boxed in" so he completely abandoned his original sound and went into more modern beats n he just can't compete there. 1999 was so PURE and so LEGIT!
He could’ve GROWN inside of HIS sound. Not stray away completely. Word up. The “BoomBap” sound was and is the best for his voice and rap patterns. SMH. Most people don’t get that about music.

I'm glad Joey didn't sign to any of those labels because look at the producers and where are a lot of those artists now? Most aren't on good terms with their previous mates and or executives, some are dead and or in jail. Joey would've been railroaded if he stuck around Jay Z and his label.
I don't remember which interview it was, but Joey stated that he wanted to be an actor. So I'm not surprised that he's been taking different directions. I remember the first time I heard Waves and Save The Children - I fell in love with him lol and he's been the last celebrity boo that I've had.
