A tip from my is to not be wedded to certain functions in certain rooms. I have a random bathroom with a lot of space, it’s the only spare space in the house. So it now houses vacuum, steam cleaner, slow cooker, jam pot, all the cleaning supplies, washing machine etc. Freezer had to go in the shed. Toaster and kettle and all baking equipment under the stairs. Kitchen is the only room with any day light so it is vital it is a nice space and not cluttered.

In one of my past apartments, there was a small closet in the hallway that was supposed to be a utility closet, but i used it as a pantry. It didnt have a light i side so i found a motion sensor light bar for the corner and it came on when i opened the door. It worked perfectly!

My apartment has a little utility closet and a reasonably sized coat closet. I use the coat closet with a motion sensor light and some shelves inside as my pantry. We don't have that many coats so we get by without a coat closet.

Purchasing things that stack well is a key to saving space. If it can stack well both when full and when empty, then it saves twice as much space.

In our condo, we purchased a wooden shelf that was made by this lady's father and husband. She had a moving sale so we got a shelf for $25 dollars. The shelf holds all my dried goods in jars, my bread box, and a few baskets with vegetables in them. I love it. In the tiny kitchen of ours, the cabinet that once held our jars now holds my cookbooks. I have made some room in the kitchen. It's hard because I have to hand wash dishes so I am constantly putting stuff away to keep the counters free. I also got rid of a lot of stuff in the kitchen too. Even when I still cleared out my space, I still just don't have the room. It's okay! I have made do with it all and I can't complain because we at least own our condo. I am super lucky to even have a place to live.

I prefer to wash my dishes by hand, it's therapeutic for me and the only time it's daunting is during the holidays when I'm baking a lot. I use my dishwasher for storage. I put my wok, a giant metal bowl, and another awkward bowl in the bottom rack, in the top rack I have my reusable water bottles. You could store cutting boards, or other awkwardly sized items in there too.

An over-the-door shoe organizer can provide a lot of storage in a kitchen or bathroom. I currently live in an apartment w/a galley kitchen, so I decided to give myself more room in the kitchen by storing most of my food in the "dining area" adjacent to it. Basically, it's an open pantry. You can find really durable shelves that you can take apart and take with you when you move, and the shelves take up only a small amount of floor space. Well worth it not to have an overcrowded kitchen--even after decluttering.

Clover is the cutest dog ever! I love your ideas for storage. I recently moved into a townhouse with an eat-in kitchen. In order to provide separation from dining and cooking area, I use a bar cart with open shelves as a make-shift island. I put canvas bins on both shelves for storage and put a large cutting board on top, and the handles are used for hanging dish towels and oven mits.

I store bulky kitchen items in a storage bin to help keep my kitchen from getting over stocked and cluttered. When I am ready to use the bulky cookware, then I know where to look and always put them back after they are cleaned. Storage containers can be stacked and stored in a corner or closset. Out of the way, but in a clear bin so I know what is inside.

As a European, I always chuckle when Americans talk about 'small kitchens' :D Re: the storage tips 1) I use the inside of my oven as storage as well. When I bake I just take everything out (except for pizza stones maybe) and set it on my kitchen table or sth, once the oven cools down everything goes back in 2) shelf dividers are LIFE (unless some furniture designer one day realises that super tall shelves are silly, but I doubt that's going to happen any time soon :D)

In my current home I literally had one teeny tiny drawer (didn't even fit standard sized utensil tray holders) in the whole kitchen and where the past owners put the fridge it was blocked from even being opened. I have relocated the fridge to the extra closet that was beside the kitchen and then bought a microwave cabinet that has a drawer and put that in the empty space the fridge left. Kitchen works much better now. Still don't understand why this kitchen has virtually no drawers in it, lol.

I use my oven less than twice a week, so it comes in handy as an extra storage unit 😉 I just pile everything I keep in it on the floor while baking and put it back when the oven is cold enough when I'm done.

This is something I've been meaning to work on for quite a few weeks! I'm kind of at a loss though because we have a lot of stuff we use all the time and the counters are just a cluttered mess! But we have a small pantry (with an accordion door so I have one of those plastic shoe organizers hanging on it for shaker bottles and stuff) and very few cabinets that are full to bursting! We've got a metal rack as extra pantry space and there isn't really any room for adding an island (we want to have one though) a bunch of our small appliances are in the linen closet and forgotten about because there's no room in the kitchen. We plan to get a house with a bigger kitchen in the future, but that's not at least for a few years. I KNOW there has to be something we can do with what we have, but I'm struggling a lot for what to do! Maybe I'll record video footage for your next viewer submission (whenever you're looking for that). I'm not sure. Maybe I'll take video/pictures and ask the facebook group so I don't take up an entire video submission video's time!

    • @craftygirl7

It looks like you have a youtube channel. Make a video of your space so we can all see it and give you ideas on what to do. I have one linen closet in my condo. When we got a washer and dryer combo I lost my second linen closet, I had to get creative with the one I had left. My brother-in-law, installed wooden shelves for us in that closet. I used baskets to store all my stuff in... a lot of my hair products and other toiletries are stored in this closet. I even have one large basket for my towels. I don't keep lots of sets of them either. I don't have room for it. I also store my blankets on the very top shelf. I also organize by type as well. I also make sure that everything in my basket is related to each other. I like to take things and condense them as well. If I have two bottles of the same shampoo and one bottle is half empty, then I put it in another bottle with shampoo that might also be half empty. I apply that to my kitchen as well. If I have two of the same spices and their both half empty, I put them in one jar. Then I also get rid of stuff in packages and put all my dried goods in jars. I get jars at Goodwill, target or HomeGoods. Ikea has jars too. Having my dried goods all in jars has saved me so much room. All of my jars on a bookshelf that I got second-hand. In my kitchen, I only keep things I know I will use. I don't own huge set of pots. I mostly use my cast iron pans on my stove. The key to keep stuff that you know you love and use all the time. If you own five of one item, maybe only keep two things instead. If you have different five sets of dishes, maybe only keep two sets. I also only own glass storage containers. Those ones I own can be stored inside of each other. Good space saver tip. You have to rethink all the things you have in your kitchen. Find your favorites to keep. I took a three-tiered wooden cake stand I had found on Amazon and I actually store all my dried herbs in jars on this cakestand. I had an overflow of jars and had no more room on my spice racks. You have to think outside the box. I watch this channel but I also watch other people on youtube organize. I get ideas from everywhere. Good luck! Hopefully you figure out your organization problem.

In order to reorganize my kitchen, I remodeled. My kitchen was old, and I wanted to open it up. We went down to bare walls, redesigned, and are updating it dramatically.
For my "old stuff," that I no longer wanted, I sent it to the beach houses my family has. Older pots/pans/dishes/glasses, stuff still in good shape, I just didn't want any longer, off to the beach.
Got rid of my L-shape kitchen, made my triangle work, no upper cabinets, and 4 pantries. Yes 4. I'll have 4 open shelves to display, but I want NOTHING on my countertops. Microwave and appliances will go in one pantry, pans/pots will go in my Lazy Susan, food will go into another pantry.
Now, I don't recommend decluttering like I did, but it's efficient and was necessary for my space. Oh, I also knocked down a wall, gained a dishwasher (which I haven't had in 15 years), and gained a garbage disposal. We're now in the 20th century, at least. Lol.

I feel your pain! My largest storage spaces are in a dead corner top and bottom,, so up top things just go to die in the back where no one can reach, and down below is a lazy Susan that sticks because something fell off the back in the 1970s I'm sure.. ugh.. None of my shelves move. And the half shelf is in a lower cupboard that's supposed to hold my pots and pans.and I don't squat.
I've been looking at how these shelves are attached. Mine appear to be resting on 0.5 x 0.5 slices of wood. I will likely just use a Costco shelf unit for my pots and pans. And after watching this I might pull that half shelf out and put in a drawer unit. The shelf can just be stored against the back or side until I move. The eat-in kitchen is a large room, but they cut the "working wall" in half to put a laundry room in. I like having a laundry, but the kitchen flow is just blown to heck.

I have used the command hooks to hang my measuring tools (table and tea spoons and a plastic set of measuring cups). I just made sure that the items in that cupboard wouldn't need right to the door for space. It has been so helpful as I don't need to sort through a drawer and they are nicely ordered from largest to smallest. I can grab what I need without really looking now.
Quick question - I have one of those rolling islands that has a long drawer. I find it difficult to organize it. This is where I store the longer kitchen items (rolling pin, large tongs, wax paper rolls, etc.) but it also holds smaller items too. I have been trying to figure out a way to section the drawer to keep things from sliding underneath each other, but I don't want the organizer itself to take up too much space. Is there a product or DIY I can use for this drawer?
